Not a baseball watcher, but your videos are awesome. I didn't realise there was this much depth tbh, always thought it was just "man with stick hit ball if can" but baseball is far more tactical than i gave it credit for.
I see a lot of parallels between this and poker now. Knowing your "tell" can be used to your advantage. I assume some pitchers do this, maybe showing the base runners their grip before changing it as they hide it behind the glove for example.
Also, and i may be way off, but doing a break down of right/left handed pitcher advantges and disadvantages could be interesting for laypeople like me.

I was going to say it looks like he must be starting with a fastball grip. And if it's a fastball, you don't see him manipulate the ball in his glove to get a different grip. If it's offspeed, he does. I didn't notice the head thing until you said it.
These are exactly the kind of breakdowns that bring inside baseball to the masses in an easily comprehensible way.

So help me out- what is it about there being a baserunner that forces (or encourages) the pitcher to change his movements in a way that makes his pitches easier to read? I heard the word "stretch" but I don't really know that that's about.

This must've felt awful in real time. It's not easy figuring out subconscious behavior, and it's even harder to figure out how you're being exploited.
Pretty amazing for the Yankees to figure this out. Obviously they have a whole big team and they’re very invested in winning the game, but still. Maybe I’m just a casual but I can’t imagine how they would ever notice this.

@Robert Reital it's not that he hit a HR with a fastball in the middle of the plate. It's the fact that the rookie didn't understand how the Yankees were sitting on his fastball EVERYTIME he was throwing it.

I think he knew he was tipping his pitches out of the stretch but didn't know exactly how.

They definitely did know something was up, the catcher was trying, but all the pitch call deception just shows how far they were from figuring out what it actually was.

The people who know a sport watch it on another level. I know people who love Nascar and they point out things I'd never notice. To me it's just cars doing circles.
@@johnjames5405 I was on an airport shuttle in Vegas and some guys were talking about the Nascar race they were going to and complaining about some other raceway that wouldn't let fans bring scanners in. They were saying they wouldn't go to a race without a scanner. Light bulb! So watching racing is more interesting if you can listen to the drivers and pit crew. OK, got it.
If you're watching on TV, there's too much going on, and only one camera angle. Jomboy Breakdowns give us everything we miss the first time around. Screw first responders, the Jomboy Crew are the real heroes.
@@jimponton693 the reason some tracks don't allow scanners is because teams have been caught using them to cheat before. They listen to other driver's and their crews, and use their strategies against them. Think Astros and trash cans.
It breaks the game down, and shows people that dont know, or really watch baseball, what's going on. Theres more than spitting, and crotch scratching going on during the game.
This is such a huge failure on the coach, the pitcher and the catcher knew they figured something out and were fighting them off for a good while. Coach left them on an island to die.

@@ethanthompson9569 the thing is you don’t necessarily know how you’re tipping pitches especially as a pitcher in the moment. But it’s on the coaches to figure that out if the Yanks can the Tigers coaches and players should be able to see it too

@@staywhatyouare they really didn't think this would ever work again in today's era. They would have figured out what the pitcher was doing wrong on the plane flight home. Some coach's ass might be on the line if this guy was tipping pitches before this game on video. The Yankees picked up on it real time, every team in the league probably had it figured out by 9 am this morning. Just looking at the detailed stats would tip an amateur off. This rookie will bounce back from this quick. It's an easy fix.
Reminds me a lot of a breakdown he did a few years ago, where he showed how the Astros we're figuring out if a fast ball or breaking ball was coming based on how the pitcher was holding his glove before throwing the pitch.

If anyone wants to argue that knowing the pitches didn’t give the Astros an advantage, they need to watch this. The Yankees put 10 runs on this guy because he was tipping out of the the stretch only! Imagine if he tipped on everything or if there were noises coming out of the Dugout…

For me slugfest usually includes the other team hitting the ball
idk what this is tbh, if you like mental games watch Maddux or Greinke on the mound, this just seemed kind of like letting the batters know what pitch is coming so now that we know they know what's coming we know how to take advantage of the fact that they know what's coming, but at the end of the day you're still letting them know what you're about to pitch so is it really that helpful? and even better, we'll have our centerfielder fake like he's coming in to catch the ball then surprise the batting team by actually letting the ball fly over the fielder's head? ... idk just seems like they're trying too hard to emulate people they watched back in the good days of baseball when players played good hard baseball and cunning players used trickery to deke an opposing player . it's sad what the sport has become tbh especially if this nonsense is the peak of mental games within baseball
@@jhanks2012 I disagree. He was subconsciously tipping pitches, the opposing team was cunning enough to pick up on something so small as his head movements. Ever consider why that was? I bet you haven’t.
Nonetheless, the Yanks capitalized on it, and the Tigers had no idea what they knew, but they figured they had what pitches he was about to throw. The trickery probably would have worked if that was the case - it was pretty smart - but it was a solution to the wrong problem.
@@user-vr5zk9ox8d idk man it just doesn't seem that subconscious to me. his head movements were not that small and unnoticeable. he clearly eventually found out that they were picking up on it so at least by that point he knew they knew the pitch before it came but he still continues doing his tell before each pitch. like when he does the tell for offspeed pitch then lobs one easy one in right down the plate because he knows they won't swing. clearly he knew they knew. maybe it started out as a subconscious thing that the hitters picked up on but that doesn't seem to be the whole story here imo

@@Phyrre56 This. 100% this. Most pitchers need their catcher and pitching coach to give them guidance. Not every pitcher is going to be as clever as, say, Greg Maddux. All a pitcher really is needs good stuff and the willingness to let his catcher and pitching coach guide him.
Quarterbacks in football and point guards in basketball, on the other hand, need to be very observant and analytical to excel. There's a reason most baseball players aren't very intelligent: being very intelligent doesn't help a baseball player much.

Intelligence in baseball is like height, neither matter much. Many baseball players in MLB are around 5'10" tall, but very few basketball players in the NBA are around 5'10". Height is a crucial factor in basketball.

If you are really out here saying that if anything it negatively impacts most players to be super intelligent, then logically the opposite must be true that players would benefit from being less intelligent than they currently are. So again, who among current or former players would perform better by being less intelligent?

I met a guy in the minor leagues who said he worked for an MLB team doing that exact job. The story he told us was that he watched hours and hours of R.A. Dickey looking for anything, and found that a very high amount of the time when Dickey gave up a homerun he threw a fastball first pitch to the next batter. He relayed it to the team, they happened to hit a bomb off him the next time they faced him, and the next guy sat fastball first pitch and hit another one. Pretty crazy how many habits you have to avoid falling into as a player in order to be elite

Great work. And you may have helped this kid solve this telegraphing issue much sooner than his coach might have. Because, if his pitching coach has not already noted this and started trying to break him of what is likely a career-long habit, then your video is being watched by him right now, and practice and his game footage all the way back to Little League will get obsessively pored over.

Jomboy didn't know what was happening live though. He was intrigued and looked through the replays to see what happened.

The kid looked good when they didn't know what was coming,. Gosh, that has to be a horrid feeling when you feel you have good stuff and they put a 10 on the board.
Bad news is he may have to miss a few starts and come on in relief for a few weeks to make sure his changes are working...otherwise he is a liability from the stretch, you would be better off with a HS Fastpitch softball hurler at that point. At least no one would have a clue how to put a bat on it for a few innings.
Lol all this channel did is watch tape. Just like his coaching staff will, I’ve seen yu darvish tip pitches and he’s an elite pitcher.

This breakdown simply shows how brilliant this game is and how deep it can be. It's one of the many things that makes baseball so amazing.
I'm not a baseball fan, never have been and never will be. this video was entertaining however. It does further solidify to me that I will never enjoy baseball because it's so boring unless you are 'in the know'. and the cost of entry to be 'in the know' enough to enjoy the game is far, far too high.

Although it really does help when you follow a good team with a good broadcasting crew, like the Yankees. I feel bad for people who are a fan of repeatedly bad teams. But if you can’t get into it at least try to enjoy good plays from a far

The problem is that A. they're difficult to spot and B. it's rare something to this degree happens, jomboy doesn't decide what plays actually occur.
For the past year I spend more time watching Jomboy breakdowns than actual baseball.
Jomboy - MLB, And especially Rob Manfred owe you guys big time. MLB is, and has been so out of touch with the fans for seemingly decades, thank god you guys came along. Knowing what pitch is coming is a massive advantage. It happened one time in Highschool where the opposing catcher was leaking signs. We knew what was coming every pitch. Made the game so much easier.
Watching players intently watch the pitchers to find small cues, and then getting excited when their theories play out, is awesome! Reminds me so much of high school/college ball, where players and coaches don't have access to 50 camera angles and have to rely on what they see. Awesome breakdown Jomboy!

The fact that both Koufax and Randy Johnson tipped their pitches and guys still couldn't hit them makes them even more incredible.
Johan Santana tipped his changeup most of the time too- still nobody could hit it. Blyleven also stuck his tongue out on breaking balls for years and was still an effective pitcher.
Doesn't matter if you know what's coming when it's a 101mph fastball with movement.
I don't remember who it was, but a player once said something kind of about this when talking about Mariano Rivera and his cutter. They said "you know what's coming, but you know what's coming in scary movies too. It still gets you."

The art of figuring out if a pitcher is tipping is incredible. Batters have been able to pick up tiny twitches within a pitchers arm muscles based on the grip on the ball

Jomboy that was an excellent breakdown. There's a difference between a talented thrower who knows how to throw the ball.
And a seasoned veteran who's honed his craft and is difficult to read. He reminds me of a double AA pitcher who still working on the finer parts of his game. The Yankees read him like the Sunday paper Thank you.

Because he IS a double A pitcher. Keep in mind for non Tigers fans here, all but one of their pitchers (not to mention many of their key players in the lineup) are injured and most of these poor fellas in the rotation are double A pitchers who have to fill in for awhile until further notice. They’re basically getting fed to the wolves which is the Tigers season in a nutshell. But it will be great experience for them and will hopefully help them develop more when they get sent back down.

In high school I remember playing against a left handed pitcher who thought he was clever. When he was looking towards the batter, he’d throw to first base to try to pick off the runner. When he was looking towards first, he’d throw the pitch. I figured it out from the dugout and got on base with a single, then I stole second on his very first pitch as he watched me take off. He saw me go, but he had no chance at getting me out because he was already committed to the plate.
I’m so glad that these kinds of mental games are happening even at the major league level. It makes watching the game that much more interesting!

Seriously though, dude has the potential to be among the greatest players ever if his career is anywhere near his potential. It is so far, but he needs to do it for a long time to be in that conversation with people like Ruth. I'm rooting for him... except when he plays the Yankees. So that's working out so far.

It’s the same thing that happened with ichiro, who also very much so has a claim at goat but had to waste time over in Japan. The way the rules prevent Japanese players from getting a full mlb career also prevents them from getting any big all time records to put them in contention with the goats.

From his Japanese career, his rookie season, last year as maybe the greatest single season anyone has ever achieved, so far this year, and the limited playing time during his injury seasons, that is plenty for him to be great. As for Ichiro, I put him easily in the conversation with people like Ty Cobb. Among the top dozen or so. And I do count his Japanese numbers there. But true GOAT? You need to START with some area where you individually outshine other teams and have a great full career, which narrows it down to very few players. Guys like Babe Ruth, Ricky Henderson, Satahara Oh, and Josh Gobson (2 of whom never played in MLB). There might be a few more, but very few. Ichiro's hit totals aren't at that level, they aren't enough orders of magnitude outside the norm. Then after that, you need to look at other factors. Ruth was also a borderline HOF caliber pitcher, so I see no comparison to him...

There is so much trickery and gaming going on back and forth in a baseball game that not fans have no idea about. And these breakdowns will bring fans into the game. Especially the younger crowd that baseball needs for the fan base of the future! Fuzzy, baseball doesn't exist, foul territory, and all those are great but Jomboy on a whole nother level!

It was really interesting to watch the catcher troubleshoot the situation to figure out how the batters knew what was coming.
After he ran through the fake shake-off pagentry, he likely realized it was his pitcher tipping but couldn't figure out quite how it was happening in situ (or had no hope it could be corrected during a live game).
Barnhart admitted he didn't know what was going on until the 8th, when Rizzo told him at first base.
Love it.. This kind of breakdown is absolute money. Everything from the fake shakes, to the giveaway. This may seem easy to pickup but these things are much harder to pick up than you think. I love this. I rode the bench on varsity so I would spend the entire game dissecting the pitcher to figure out how he tips his pitches. Some guys with offers were good but then some kids would be obvious. Like two completely different set positions and stuff like that. I’d then relay this info to the batter by cheering. If I said something along the lines of “here we go 22” or anything involving their jersey number it meant breaking ball. I had this shit in depth. I’d have the other team sweating about me. Your third base coach signs aren’t safe either.
Honestly reading pitchers and stealing signs was some of my favorite parts of baseball. I played first base for the most part and always had eyes on the third base coach. I remember one game where I actually had to start figuring out different ways to signal to my team steals and bunts because they caught on to me tipping off the infield after switching their signs up for the third time. By the end of the game you had runners on base standing flat foot on a hit and run because their signals were so different than when the game started. Baseball is such a fun game man I love this channel!

What’s crazy is the tigers knew the Yankees had him figured out but didn’t talk to him about changing anything in his routine. The catcher knew he was tipping his fastball so I find it hard to believe the tigers couldn’t figure out it was the look at third base. If they honestly couldn’t figure out how he was tipping then the entire tigers coaching staff and players need to be fired! Yankees had it in the second inning and the tigers knew immediately and did nothing to fix the kids problem they just left him out there to get hammered for three more innings! Kudos to the catcher for trying to help him!

Yo, I had this exact tell in high school. I was paranoid about base runners stealing when I would throw a breaking ball so I'd make sure to keep a close eye on them the whole time in the stretch (might even pick off every so often). With fastballs, I had little concern they'd be successful with my slide step so I wouldn't pay much attention to them.
That explains everything. Seems so logical reason why you did it, and must be very common. I blame Detroit coaching staff for not catching it. The only downside is once Jomboy reveals it, everyone is going to catch on.

You could tell during the first at bat against Ohtani that they knew something they shouldn't know. 11 pitches to Carpenter ending in a lead off homer. Then they went 53 pitches without a swing and miss. Annoying as hell

It was one of his first times pitching for real so nobody knew what his mannerisms would be in that higher pressure situation. When he was training with his coaches he probably never did it but now they know and cam correct it.

In football, some RBs give away the play to the LBers based on their first stutter step. Some quarterbacks do it via what mannerism they call an audible with. In UFC some fighters pull their back shoulder before throwing a jab.. all of those are far more subtle than this. Furthermore, I wouldn’t be surprised to know that some teams have “intel” staff that find tells like these amongst pitchers given the advancement of technology.

I was thinking the same thing. They were insanely "disciplined" at the plate against Ohtani. Angels pitching is awful this year, but not usually Ohtani.
That could have just been a case of the heebee jeebees. Shohei had a bad outing the last time he was in Yankee Stadium. After that first Home Run he gave up he probably lost against himself overthinking about that last bad start and couldn't play at 100% going forward. After the second home run forget about it. Also the whole Angels team is suffering a slump. Maybe the bad vibes got to him.
All that is probably true but cannot explain the fact that the Yankees were crazy disciplined when he was on the mound and started chasing once the bullpen took over.
