From the Bench -- AMA Expo West Scale Weathering How-To Clinic

- The AMA Expo West was last November and I had a full booth at the show. Through the course of the weekend, I was showing weathering techniques on an FMS Yak-130 and an E-Flite P-51 both of which were donated by Horizon Hobby. For one of the clinics, I was able to do a weathering session on the main stage for the purposes of recording video with the end result being this video.
The techniques mentioned in the video kind of run through the gamut of what I like to employ when I'm weathering up an airplane and are applicable to any medium of aircraft foam, glass or otherwise not to mention any size. Additionally, combinations of the techniques can be used to achieve a myriad of different effects including metal hot sections and such as well. The key is to experiment and to see what works best for the effect you're going for, but generally speaking the approach I take is washes first followed then by airbrush shading (of which should be done with very thin paint). Less is more, so as the shading is applied, if more is desired, simply spray another pass. It's far easier to add more color to get the effect than to take color away. Lastly, it's worth pointing out that the paint mediums can be swapped too. I was using acrylics for washes to avoid reactions to the stock paint of the foam airplanes, but oils could be used as well so long as there aren't any reactions to the base paint. Ultimately, it's all about experimentation and finding what techniques and mediums work best for what you're looking for. I'm thinking that I will most likely write an article in the future specifically on different weathering techniques to expand further what is discussed here to this video, so be on the look out for that at some point. One of my favorite channels.
Tks for all the awesome vids Chris!
Thank you so much!
I love the fact I just purchased a fms yak 130 and was looking to weather it . The first video that popped up after searching weathering techniques had the exact same bird. Time to get out my airbrush. Many thanks
Thanks for watching!
You are the master of the weathering. Most of the weathering on my PLANES comes from the Grass I Fly from. It ends up every where from the prop mowing the grass. 😎
Haha, there's always plenty of that weathering too. ;) Thanks for the kind words!
Very Nice Chris. Thanks for the instructional video. BTW the afterburner looks awesome on my F-22 90mm Freewing. Thanks, Skip
Thanks so much! Glad you're stoked with the centerburner! :)
Hi Chris, thank you for your effort ... it was instructive.
Great job! I love your weathering videos. Keep em' coming.
Thanks man, thanks for watching them! :)
Killer techniques brother!
Always an inspiration to watch you work and listen to you share your Years of experience.
Big fan !
Thanks so much man, I really appreciate you watching! :)
@@Thercgeek Frontline skills, as always! Thanks for sharing your expertise with all of us!
@@alphamrc309 Thanks man!!
You still make things look easy! Thanks
Thanks man! I've been doing this stuff for a long time.
Booth 359? As in The Battle of Wolf 359? Nice!
Nice presentation Chris. I will definitely try some of your techniques.
Cool deal! Let me know if you have questions on any of it.
Awesome mate 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
Thanks for watching! :)
Dude! Awesome video!!
Thanks man!
Very cool, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
I'm going to rebuild an old Starmax He162. Going to use Mod Podge stiffener for the sealer. I'm using Dap Pink spackling. Sands great, not like the crap you used. Prime with flat Rustoeleum. Sands like Butter. Takes a day to dry. Top coat Tamiya of course. Adding a Mercury 8 blade. Thinking 60 amp esc with 32004s. Whatcha thing on the power. I'm a airplane painter in real life. I've got that down its the power system I worry about. Thanks for another great video!!!!
Thanks for watching! Good idea with the mod podge. I'll look into the DAP pink, though I found a spackle from Sherwinn-Williams that works pretty well too. I'm not familiar with that mercury fan unfortunately, so can't really say. Do you have a link?
@@Thercgeek Its 8 blade 4700kv. All machined Aluminum. Not plastic
Thanks for sharing. Did I spot an Engineer's Ring?
Yes indeed you did. :)
Thanks so much for your great videos Chris. I always learn so much from you. I’m weathering my 1600mm spit right now. Check out my video on my channel if you have a second and you’ll see just a snipit of what I’ve done, will be posting a full video soon on her. Also with FAA regulations, we’ve designed plastic templates that can be customized any way you like it and then you can airbrush stencil with any color on any aircraft for a custom look and use many times over. Let me know if you’d like one. Thanks again for all you do for this great hobby!! 👊🏼
Thanks man, I appreciate you watching! I saw the spitfire wing in the powerlab vid, looks real good man! I've been pondering the FAA solution now that they're mandating it be external on the airplane. Been thinking about just simply printing them small and inconspicuously and placing them on inner gear doors since they're technically outside the airplane when down.
@@Thercgeek I like that idea. 😎
