Once again, Reg is right. Future, is not a storyteller / battle rapper/ word smith but he is rapping. He is rhyming words together. It’s simple, easy to digest but that doesn’t make it any less Rap.
I first heard Future at parties and clubs in 2011 (the Dirty Sprite and True Story era 😮💨), so lyricism simply wasn’t something I had a reason to judge him by. I relegated him to the “party/kickback” part of my music brain. The ‘We Don’t Trust You’ album was the first Future project I Iistened to all the way through and it COMPLETELY changed my view of his lyrical ability. There’s so many bars in that album that are overlooked and under-appreciated. It’s kinda frustrating, tbh, but I understand the reasons for it though. Partially, it’s because a lot of the audience is hearing the lyrics but not actually considering what he’s saying or the context behind it. For them, the words are just nice sounds. On top of that, Kendrick’s verse on ‘Like Dat’ overshadowed everything else on the album in the moment, and then the subsequent battle pretty much ensured the album wouldn’t get the focus it deserved. 🤷🏾♂️ that’s how shit goes tho.
Future is rapping. The conversation they’re having is MC’ing versus rapping. MC’ing is the pure art of rapping i.e. being a lyricist, wordsmith, storyteller. Rapping is just the element of hip-hop where you rhyme words over a beat. Rap is a hustle, MC’ing is an art. Future is one of the best rappers of all time but has never been an MC. I hope this makes sense.
Future is 100% a lyricist. We can close this argument easily with the fact that he ghostwrites for multiple genres. How could you ghost write and R&B song without having lyrics.
Y’all About To Piss Me Off.. Future A Fuxkin Poet He’s Rappin He’s Lyrical He’s Spittin It’s Non Traditional & That’s Ok.. Cause Dave East Raps Traditional & Y’all Don’t Even Acknowledge His Career.. So With That Being Said Reg Is Right For ONCE.. Pop Sit This One Out B Trust Me We Know You A Big Busta Buss Fan & RZA & All That But You Hatin On The South.
Music is Art..Art is subjective..art is opinionated..i may not like a certain form/type of art. Im entitled to that. The person nxt to me may feel the complete opposite…he is entitled to that. Its our opinions on said piece of art..the only fact about art is that it was influenced by an idea within a persons heart/mind that was bought into the physical world to be shared with us. Whether we like it or not as individuals. Music has genres & sub-genres..i maybe love one form of hip hop..but dislike another form..thats my opinion..the subjective portion of art.
First off I’m from Atlanta and Future is not lyrical at all. Compared to names like Pop said, 38 Spesh, Big L, and Ransom, how can you say that Future is lyrical after hearing that? Future is more melodic as are other rappers where I’m from and some that are popular from other cities. Meaning you sing or harmonize more than you rap. Future has no qoutables that people see as profound like they have with rappers who actually have bars. Future is a melodic rapper but not an actual traditional rapper if that makes sense. Same with others like Young Thug, Gunna, and whoever else sings through their entire 16.
