It’s not every-day that a musician creates a hit single so popular that it racks up over a billion views - and it’s even rarer when that artist then drops off of the face of the planet - but somehow, that’s exactly what happened to the man behind “Somebody That I Used To Know”, the enigmatic singer/songwriter known as Gotye. That single was a pop-culture staple of the early 2010’s and took home a whole slew of awards including three Grammys for Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Alternative Music Album. And yet - soon after returning home from a World Tour, Gotye decided to move on from his world-famous persona to concentrate on a side-project, his alt-rock band The Basics. He’s also worked hard to ensure that a pioneer of the electronic music genre will never be forgotten by preserving the musical legacy of his friend and mentor, Jean-Jacques Perrey. So, no, Gotye isn’t passed away -- though you can bet that rumor sure made the rounds - instead, after achieving the very heights of success, he’s decided to pursue his true passions even if that means shrinking away from the mainstream spotlight.

Now, he's just somebody that we used to know
I knew someone was gonna say that.
Like i was just about to say that
😂👌🏽
Dry
That’s the top comment on his song
He actually apologised for making everyone listen to his song over and over again because of how many times radio stations were playing it
No need, it was a banger
why did he apologize that song is a legend its so good
Well does anyone say Star Wars is an anime?...
@@EkardRimidalv no
It was indeed annoying back then, but now it's a banger.
This is one impressive guy. Much respect for his choice to stay sane rather than turn into another manufactured Hollywood weirdo who is self obsessed and shallow.
@Muhamad Ikhwan not specifically but sure she fits into that category.
What happened to him
Called SELF CONTROL
Wally is doing other stuff, and being a father. You’re confusing him with being from the USA. Wally is very modest and never really wanted fame. Glad to have been friends with him, he’s a legend!
@@brbCycling how am I confusing him as being someone from the U.S.? I'm just glad he didn't sell out and instead decided to remain authentic. Glad you got to know him on a personal level
A true artist indeed, driven by his own passion of the art rather then the demand of the global music industry
Wow
The Real Meaning of "respect"
Exactly, I wish there was more musicians like him but sadly the industry is filled with fame seeking egomaniacs

@@Settiis not underground artists tho
This man is a living art piece that just murkes the music industry. Brilliant. I always felt this song was so real. Most other top songs are just not so genuine like this
This! This has been my main critique of most music today. It sounds like a lot of the songs today are put out with the intent to go “viral” become a “Tik Tok” hit etc. But there’s no passion in the music. I really miss that from today’s music
@@ashleyholmes28 You aren't looking in the right place for music then. There are plenty of wonderful artists

Facts. Beautiful song. Over played at first but still good.
hes not an artist. he is a narcissist. artists understand the thing they create is not theirs once released unto the world. He didnt have control of his music after he made it. He could force you to listen or to not listen. So like the man child he is, he stopped making music for the public because he could not control them.
He's been proficient at cruising under the radar, however no one will ever forget that song. The singularity of a one-hit-legend alone emphasizes the unanticipated mystique with this dude. We'll all be scratching our heads for a long time.
So much respect for this guy. Weird title for the video though. I think he did everything possible to make sure it didn’t ruin his life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Wally earlier this year. He took the to chat with me about his music and what he was working on. I swear, he is one of the nicest, most humble, down-to-earth people I've ever met. It seems crazy that he could have had it all yet he still chose to step out of the spotlight.
One of the biggest what if’s bro
HE NEEDS A PEDICURE AND DENTSAL WORK .
Wouldn't it be nice if everyone lived like him. What a peaceful world we would live in. He has my utmost respect!
Not mad at him. I would have done the same thing: Got my money and bounced.
He left millions on the table tho
@@dancarthen3634 dude is smart 🤓 he left millions and be free, don't forget he rich enough after that one song

@José José you must really wish you were as famous and trashy as Jersey Shore.
@José José • That's not nice. Probably not true. Have a nice life.

It didn’t. The title is clickbait
Clickbait title.
This guy is what all musicians should strive to be like
Yeah - he is a musician, not a “pop star”… 👍
Ruined his life? WTF? So he had one huge hit. So what? He's living a comfortable life doing what he wants largely due to that song. More power to him. Why the assumption that everyone who has a global hit wants to have another? On the contrary, he was smart enough to not even attempt to top the nearly two billion views (and climbing) for this song, #1 in 23 countries and tens of millions in sales with his next effort. How do you top that? I enjoy his passion and his music even if it doesn't satisfy the sad people who think you're a failure if you don't top yourself every time or do the same thing over and over.
I respect Gotye for almost all his decisions (even avoiding new music under his name alone). He is without doubt one of the few well-known musicians perpetually preserving his roots and keeping it about the music.
I don't really like "Somebody that I Used to Know" all that much, but I'll always be grateful for it leading to one of my favorite modern artists. I really hope Wally continues to find fulfillment in his endeavors, no matter what the future holds.
That's how I found Kimbra. She's so fricking awesome too, and luckily still made a bunch of music
I have spoken with him on Facebook and he is a nice guy. I have loved his music for years and The Basics though not every song from the group. I still remember listening to the album Board face on a private beach on an island in Vanuatu while watching the sunset. ❤️

Wally de Backer, aka Gotye, was NEVER a one hit wonder. Just because he only had one hit in your country, and reached number one all around the world, he has been an award winning musician in his home country of Australia. With many hit singles and albums since the early 2000's. It always annoys me when people call an artist a one hit wonder when they're from another country and just haven't released anything overseas. Believe me I've heard the term used here in Australia for the same reason. Mainly because their song was SO HUGE that it's virtually impossible to top it.
Tbh I never knew he was award winning but someone who makes a masterpiece like somebody that I used to know just cant be a one hit wonder that's pure talent that songs art
what...? do you realise that you are contradicting yourself. He is worldwide known for Somebody I Used to Know. That is what is called being a one hit wonder. He was not known worldwide for his other songs. Yea maybe famous in Australia, but that is like one fucking single country. I would consider a singer hit when he is known in several countries atleast.
Australia is not his home country nor is his name Wally, idiot. Does WOUTER De Backer sound like an Australian name to you? The guy is Belgian by heart
He has at least a half dozen really fantastic songs, and probably more that I just haven't had the pleasure of hearing yet. Definitely not a one hit wonder, he just tends to make melancholy or self-reflective music, which most people don't like since it forces us to recognize our own flaws by extension.

Please listen to his album Making Mirrors!!!He has so many good songs other than Somebody I used to know.
Yes!! State of the art, Bronte, save me, in your light, and easy way out are my favorites on that LP
Yep!
That album is exceptionally good.
Don't know what album hearts a mess is on, but I love that song!
@@beansmacarter932 Hearts A Mess is also on Making Mirrors! You totally should give it a try
All I can say, is somebody bought me a CD copy of Like Drawing Blood for my 16th birthday back in 06' and I've been writing music ever since. He's literally the reason I started writing and producing my own music. And it took me almost AN ENTIRE year to realize he sang "Somebody I Used To Know." He's a true artist...one of the few.
Edit: Also The Basics are fucking fantastic
Like drawing blood is a very awesome album that almost nobody know ironically
That s how I d like to succeed as an artist.
You d be a one time massive success to be financially safe for the rest of your life.
And then you can do whatever you want without fear of rejection or having to be a sell out.
I love that this song continues to live on, still underrated
He's brilliant - Hearts a mess and state of the art are some of the best songs ever.
Hearts a mess is one of my favorite songs ever
Almost prefer Heart's a Mess
Also what do u want song is nice too
Hearts a mess is my fav song, I like it more than used to know
state of the art blew my mind.
He has such natural musical talent. And he is a beautiful man. That song is so special and I treasure it. I think its special for alot of people.
This feels like blues clues all over again. I’m happy for him, and his passions.
“In the black community, that’s a bad name.” “Our white AND Black fans will LOVE that line.”
I didnt get It at all. Maybe couse i'm not from USA
*It’s a very rare thing these days… that someone has deep rooted morals and won’t sellout for money… 💵 💰 💷 Every credit to him..!*
Turns out he's actually a songwriter now and wrote a couple of big hits under his own name, Wouter De Backer
Wasn’t really feeling him when gotye made somebody that I used to know, but I instantly became addicted to his music when I heard eyes wide open, truly an underrated song
One of the greatest songs ive ever heard
Ew.
Lmao good one
Ehh
your standard must be fucking low
I agreed one of the most unique wibe its just so rare
I always wondered what happened to this dude, Somebody that I used to know was a banger, and the dubstep version was even better, but fame isn't for everyone, he made a hit record, saved enough money to retire and now he's living his life, can't get mad at that, at least he can go out in public without cameras in his face and people asking for pictures and autographs 24/7
I’m going to head out and listen2 - Somebody I use to know -after this.
He didn't care about the fame. Now that's real
If get that bread, get that head, and leave was a person.
Now Gotye IS just somebody that i used to Know
I just love his voice so so much. It moves me. I just want more of him to listen to! It's like when the movie is over, but you wanted to keep following the story and would've sat through 4 more hours. Also, he's gorgeous. Is he single?? :P
omg i was just thinking about him yesterday!!! He used to go to my primary school!

This song was a pivotal moment in my freshman year of Highschool. It’s a work of art. You got me through a really tough time of my life, thank you 💕.
Like many others I lived this song. Now there is something else to admire about Gotye, the take on his music and his accidental fame not being squeezed for its commercial juice. This must leave the Americans scratching their heads. So to his obvious contentment with his choices.
I fell in love with "Someone that I used to know".. so much I would play it too often.
Normally one hit wonders are pretty crappy tunes this is a exception it was a cracking song
He turn his song to real literally and really become "somebody we used to know"
So he is a wise, valued centered person that does not pursue the shallowness of approval and fame. Awesome! I have even more respect for Gotye.
I wouldn’t consider 2 billion views as a “ruined life”
He stayed real🔥
"Is that Jacob Collins?" "Julian, he's rockin your look hArd."😂
Can you do a before they were famous on gordan Ramsey.(and if you do can u say the famous line wheres the lamb sauce)

He born in Bruges (Belgium).
@@MOFFELetPIERRE but he's also spent effectively all his life in aus and has an aus accent, I think that's enough to qualify him as Australian

Am from YEMEN AND a lot of my friends love the song just like i do ❤
personally, I think "eyes wide open" is even better than "somebody that I used to know"
That still has to be one of the coolest things to be known by, just: "somebody that I used to know"

Gotye... when life imitates art.
I think its criminal that only somebody that I used to know blew up. Hearts a mess, bronte and eyes wide open were all songs far more meaningful and beautiful. The man was putting put sleeper hits for years and they still dont get the recognition they deserve
I’ve never seen someone I thought was more deserving of the wealth from his fame
You know there was another band that had a song called “Get Back” and there was another band who said “You know what, we’re not touring anymore”. It was The Beatles.

a true artist and a true genius, genius like him never choosed to become a popstar mainstream slave he knew that but he wanted to give it a try of experience his life how is like to be a superstar for one moment of his life, he instead take it as a lesson rather than a full road of misery

That song is such a mood. Love it

He seems very wise and kind
My respect for Gotye 📈📈📈
Still listening to this song in 2022 and just thought to myself..where is this guy?
I was today years old when I discovered that Gauthier is supposed to be the same name ass Walter/Wouter.
Why roman languages decided they would add a "g" is still a mystery to this day.
So the video is praising him for his achievements and not selling out, but the tittle says that One song ruined his life?!
How do figure that?
That Chinese boy joke was fire lol
WoW... You're Damned right he lives by his own set of rules &convictions! Like Kurt Cobain, SOME ppl just aren't Built like that, where they desire $, &Fame over all else. They truly don't want that life. They just do it all for the Love of the Beautiful new sounds they create.✌🏾️
He was good musician and singer. Hope he is good now..
crazy how i can relate to how he looks at fame; im a writer , rapper , audio engineer producer and shoot videos , but when it balls down to it, id prefer to be behind the scenes working than being on the spotlight and having my life being controlled by others , but obviously if the opportunity rises with a record deal , id do it to open up the door to what i really want
Lmfao all the black references are funny asf I like this guy lol
Never knew him before this song, but everyone is talking like he was so famous before this. 🤷
Gotye is a modern folk hero.
You gotta do more “Where Are They Now’s” on other one hit wonders. You should do Daniel Powter next. “Bad Day” is one of the best songs of all time.
OMG THAT WAS AN AMAZINGGGGG SONGGGGG
Hes not a one hit wonder hes an award winning artist and is well known in Australia. Literally went platinum.
I love how American say Melbourne 😂❤️
makes me like him more
dude dropped one song and dipped
The window green screen makes the production look cheap
If Eric Foreman was a musician, he'd be Gotye
Lol 😂
Much great respect to that musical artist. 🎶🎵
I guess u could say hes someone we use to know 😂
Marlin can you do a before they were famous on John Mayer and Green Day
I mean John was pretty much just out of high school when he got famous so there’s not a lot of story to tell. I saw him and got to hang out with him on tour back in 1998 when he was opening up for Glen Phillips from toad the wet sprocket. he was a super nice kid, endlessly talented as we all know but at that point he already had a major label record deal and was in the process of writing the songs that would become “Room For Squares”
Hmm.. this year is the first time I've ever heard that song. Didn't realize it was that old.
Soooo….yes he has more money that most now, to not monetize his RUclips channel seems absolutely silly to me. It’s the click of a button and RUclips sends you checks. If he didn’t want the money he could have donated it to struggling musicians or started a college fund for musicians.
At the end of the day it's his choice, you don't know what his position is, he must have his reasons
Before Goyte Was Famous in the US he was famous in Australia. Gotye's US so termed ...one hit wonder... was lifted from one of his many albums and took off on the US charts and around the world. He was already established, selfsufficient and selfmanaged, so the US music industry machine could not suck him in to produce specifically for the sharks within IT. Since then people with an interest in following new artists have discovered his other albums which have amassed miillions of views by avid fans, a couple having up to 3OM views just for individual songs among many.
There are also a couple of much viewed documentaries about how he uniquely works on ceating his music.
More admirers (even US ones) for his other music productioms on the YT React To........ Music channel.
He actually appeals to lovers of the non ' run of the mill, ' non flavour of the moment, made for the industry contrived trending market..... genuinely, individual crafted music and insightful lyrics. Live performance of his highly much viewed and positively commented about Heart's A Mess song is also available on YT.
I think he wanted to be known more his original type of music and not for “somebody that I use to know”. Even to the point of not accepting millions of dollars in return for that specific song cause some artist don’t like that. In some ways I think it’s a bit selfish because he wasn’t the only artist in that song so what about the rest of the people behind the song that was involve.
I know Gotye is still alive. He’s 43 Years Old.
he dropped one song and dipped now he's just somebody that we used to know
Would have been SO much better to monetize his video and donate 100% of those profits than let RUclips take that money for Google’s Evil Corp. However, I respect his life philosophy and more specifically, his follow through, immensely.
he isnt a one hit wonder, He is a one song...
He made one song and left 😢😢 he wouldve made more hits
We need to protect what he created and hoping TikTok doesn’t steal it because that’ll make me so mad
