Tennessee as well. But dated a Texan in late 70s who wanted us to alternate paying for our dates.....he bought 1 dollar hot dogs on base n that was the date he paid for after I had just taken him to a nice restaurant and a movie. He was a jerk.
I would think the "old fashioned" is related to the idea that American men are more likely to formally ask a woman on a date. If we are officially "on a date" then I'm more likely to pay. If we're not "on a date" then we're just friends hanging out together, and she can pay for herself just like my guy friends can pay for themselves.
When I was in the American Navy never thought of myself as having an accent, until I went to Edinburgh Scotland and made the mistake of saying "Howdy"to two Scottish girls in a pub. They got a big kick out of my greeting and told me they loved my accent. Me, an accent? 😆 One of the girls turned to the other and said, this will probably be the closest I'll ever get to John Wayne. 🤔 Any way, your right, Irish men are more easy going than American men, who are overly opinionated. Of course that is just my opinion. 😁😜
It's funny to me how many Americans think they don't have accents. Of course you do! Every person who speaks has an accent! Apparently even deaf and mute people sign with accents!
I was born and raised in the South and we were taught to respect our elders, open the door for women and at a restaurant, we would pull the seat out for a woman to make it easier for them to sit. While walking down a sidewalk, the man would walk closest to the curb (to shield her from any water a horse drawn carriage might splash up. This is quite traditional now for man to walk closest to the curb. I still do it), When opening a car door for your date , the man stands in a way to block her from sight until she stands up. That's not usually done now except by fathers or a male relative. The man also gives up his seat to a woman or the elderly and especially on public transportation. Times have changed.

@@ronniebaker4549 lol they’re not intimidated a lot of women who consider themselves intelligent are disrespectful as hell which is what men don’t like
I think men are more obsessed with food as my mother and father both taught me that cooking a meal for the one you love or in the case of dating you fancy, shows how much you care for them. You cared enough to find out what your partner likes and dislikes, may be allergic to in order to feed them. To provide them with food to empower them. Help them live longer. In a way preparing and serving the person whom you find special is a love language in and of itself.
When I was a teenager my mother taught my brothers and me how to do laundry, to cook and other domestic activities. Her logic was that we could not count on a woman to do it for us. And for the most part she was right. My late wife would ask "Where do you want to go for dinner?".
Good for her! I had two roommates a few years ago: one was a single child raised by a single mom who did everything for him, the other had a step dad and siblings and step siblings and with five kids and you are the oldest you learn to do things. The one from the big family would get so mad when the other failed at basic household tasks and shout, "it's not my job to raise you, you're an adult".
I’m not typical, but I believe it would be considered a weak date to go to a bar for a drink even as a first date. Bars from my experience, are where you go with your friends and pick up girls to skip the dating rituals. Maybe you start dating after. Or maybe you’re going to the bar with friends and you ask someone along you like, but that’s not a date imo. If I went up to a girl in America and asked her to a bar on a date, she’s thinking, I think she’s a cheap date and that I just want to get her drunk. And then there are some American girls that are in to that though.
My wife and I went on a lunch date for our first date. It seemed like a great way to keep things casual and take the pressure off. I guess it worked well because we've been married for 17 years 😁
Agreed. I typically don't think of going to a bar as a first date with someone. It sends off an...adolescent? message. The exception is if the date is going well and we both agree to go to a bar later in the evening after dinner or whatever activity, but it isn't usually a starting point. If a lady suggests it, though, and it's just a generic dive bar, it kind of puts me off at the start but that's just me.
Joseph Reneer I would never go to a bar with a woman I love or are interested in, too many variables. If she wants to do "Girls night out" thats perfectly fine!😎

I don't actually know any Irish people personally (I mean, I'm American, so I know a lot of people who call themselves Irish, but they're not, really). But as an American man, I honestly don't find anything to disagree with here. I think this all sounds pretty fair. I will add that America used to have more of a drinking culture (we were founded by the British, after all), but a temperance movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries headed by evangelicals, and thirteen years of Prohibition being written into the Constitution itself, has left us with a bit of a stigma around drinking. You don't want to admit to drinking all that often over here, or people will assume you have an addiction. Also, I'm amused you stated outright that you've never been in a relationship with an American man. I predict you're going to get a lot of offers in the comments. XD
That auto identifying as "alcoholic" is very unfortunate for Americans. Due to this automatic labeling factor, people, who are guilty of crimes, are often cleared of guilt just because someone else, involved with the crime or not, is found to have had alcohol in their system, or simply known to consume alcohol on a regular basis, despite this fact having no contributing element to the crime committed.
As someone who's been a _lifetime_ teetotaler, I can tell you the opposite is often true. When you tell someone you _don't_ drink, often the first words out of their mouth is "Oh, so you're an alcoholic?" No! You dolt! The second question I get is "So you're Mormon?" ...and I'm forced to murder them and hide their body in a dumpster.
Also I believe Americans drive more often than other people in other parts of the world. Other countries are smaller and people can get around by bus, train, or by walking. America is huge. So drunk driving is another part of the conversation in modern times. Personally, I don't see the harm in a little booze. But it's so ingrained.
Loved the video. Editor Diane is always hilarious. I wish I had someone looking out for me like that in my daily life. “Heather didn’t mean to say that and was actually trying to pay you a compliment, but ruined” Yes I’d love someone to do that for me. 🤣

As an American girl, I've actually never been sure whether or not to expect the guy to pay. I don't like going into a date with that expectation because it's awkward if the guy didn't intend to pay, and I'm always super grateful when he does, I think it's really sweet. But sometimes when the waiter comes and asks about the bill, the guy hesitates, so I go ahead and just tell the waiter to split the bill, but the guy then sometimes seems disappointed or unsure. I just hate the idea of making a guy pay if he didn't mean to, but often guys seem to look to me to cue them in on what they're supposed to do and it's super uncomfortable. I think it might be because I strike them as a "modern woman" and they aren't sure if it'll offend me if they pay (a guy did once ask if I'd be offended if he paid for me).
So happy to see Editor Diane again!!! I do actually take pride in my appearance so I'm not going to apologize for it. Plus I might not compare everything to how my mom does it but she did teach me to cook so I use the recipes and techniques she taught me

I was an unwitting 3rd party to an Irish man trying to pick up a Canadian bartender once. He alternated between trying to be charming towards her and threatening to beat the shit out of me. It was like he didn't realize she could hear what he was saying to me. It was a surreal experience.
I’m American. A first date is usually dinner or dinner and a movie, etc. If you want to get to know someone in a much more casual way you could ask them if they’d like to meet for drinks, but that isn’t the best way to do it imo. I always make it clear I’m asking her on a date, I always pay (but appreciate it if she offers), and I always hold doors. Most women put a lot of time and money into getting ready for a date so I feel like it evens out.
I always feel funny about splitting the check, even among friends. Trying to tally up what each of us ate and how much it costs makes me feel like I'm watching what you eat and evaluating it. I loved the idea of buying rounds! It was a new concept to me when I first heard about it on here and other Irish channels. That seems grand fun to me, and in at least one of my groups we have adopted this (Irish?) style of going out drinking. But I'm a little bit of a weirdo about stuff like this. I would totally think if a date wanted to pay for their meal then they were not having a good time.
I do everything myself ( laundry, cleaning house, and etc.. ), I was always taught to have manners, open doors for women and pay for the fist couple dates then after that it’s a flip of a coin. Chewie is really chilling out. Great video from you 👍👍👍.
You always make me smile! I’m a 68 year old American expat living in Italy.....talk about mama’s boys!!! I’m 1/3 Irish, but I identify mostly with the Irish, since thats what I grew up around. The Irish guys I knew were always a lot of fun...I think because they were from big families . They were a bit too clannish ...obviously a trait fostered in the home. American guys on the other hand, could’ve used some lessons from the Irish dudes on manners and class! Just my opinion...and that is how I perceived it way back when there were still dinasours.
This is good. I've watched a few of your videos. Just subscribed. I'm a old school American with Irish blood. No matter what we want to be John Wayne and Frank Sinatra mix. A real man anyway.

Hi Diane. Interesting bunch of videos you’re posting. I like your observation regarding the size of a country influences how quickly it can change (or modernize), overall education level probably has something to do with that as well. One small request; can you start referencing it as the United States of America or US of A. The Americas is the entire Western Hemisphere - of which there are many countries and cultures (very different from what you’re experiencing in the United States). Thanks ☮️❤️
New sub! In college to get dates I offered the girls in my dorm to wash their laundry, at parties if i asked a girl/women on a date I always would cook dinner and have multiple bottles of wine and stocked bar available.
On being quick witted, You seemed to interpret this as a statement of general intelligence. Typically in america "quick witted" is referring to your agility in conversation. Basically banter. On the subject of debate, I don't think this is an issue in relationships because it would be solved early on. If you get in a debate on the second date, you will either solve any potential problems at that time, or you will stop dating.
Debate in Europe is done among close friends and family, from my understanding, not just anyone who happens to disagree with you. It’s just different, and can be seen as rude in public.
I think in America, ideas around dating/courtship are derived from many different cultural backgrounds. Even if your family is Irish descent, you may live in an area where italian & German values come as s way of life. Everything kind of mixed together to get their ideas. I hope this makes sense!
*Irish Accent* My favorite accent to hear. I could listen to someone narrating a grocery list and it would be the best thing I've ever heard. ASMR at its finest. Doesn't matter age/gender, Irish accents are just the best imo.
I hung out and had the best time with two Irish guys in Las Vegas. I was astonished to discover neither of them had ever done a load of laundry, although they owned a washer!. Their mothers had done it every time.
The first date activity depends on how sure I am that I will enjoy the woman's company. The less I know about the woman, the less 'involved' the date (get drink). If it's someone I've know for years but this is a first date, I'll go spend a day at Six Flags amusement park or something like that. Something fun so that even if the date is a failure, I'll still have fun.
I tend to keep my opinions to myself unless I know them. Although if a person asks me directly I’ll tell them. When it comes to the relationship with one’s mom; it’s the eldest child’s responsibility to take care of one’s mother. My mom was a three-time cancer survivor, a certified doctor with a Ph.D, and I was the one who helped her travel and research. When it comes to debates; I don’t mind discussing things, but I tend to be more laid back and don’t go out for formal debates.

Tears..... laughing too...... hard....... can't...... breathe. Loved the list! Love your nails. Please give Chewie a pet.
I was an unwitting 3rd party to an Irish man trying to pick up a Canadian bartender once. He alternated between trying to be charming towards her and threatening to beat the shit out of me. It was like he didn't realize she could hear what he was saying to me. It was a surreal experience.
Dinner then drinks lol Spaghetti....you have never seen Disney's Lady and the Tramp? 😂 oh this s part where I don't leave comment on your hair 😂😂😂
Well done Diane! Funny AND beautiful, hava great weekend!! 🎉🌹💐
I think when you say "bye" Chewie hears "park" 😂
Daphne Marrable me too!
As far as American men you have an absolute smorgasbord to chose from so you’ll never get bored!!
I do everything myself ( laundry, cleaning house, and etc.. ), I was always taught to have manners, open doors for women and pay for the fist couple dates then after that it’s a flip of a coin. Chewie is really chilling out. Great video from you 👍👍👍.
And the winner for best performance in a you tube video.... "Again! for the next year in a row....Editor Diane!" (loud applause.......)
Chewie looks thrilled. Editor Diane nailed it.
Ambitious and adventurous. Sounds like me. Love the content Diane. Hugs 😘💕😎💕
Editor Diane is for me. That cold, distant, bloodless attitude is amazing.
Another great episode Diane. Luv luv your show.. have a great weekend.
Love the dog just chillin' in the background.
Thank you Diane for helping me through.
Chewy is so cute just chillin' while you work. Definitely a laid back Irish bloke.
At the 09:45 mark chewie just high-tails it out of there. He’s like ‘yay it’s over’ apparently he had another engagement to attend. Great vid though 😎
The debating one is fair. It wears me out but I enjoy it. I'm not good socially so I rarely date but I do debate a lot on the Internet.
and Chewy was just napping throught the video, lol right till the end.
Wonderful scientific study Diane, but once again, the adorable Chewie on the couch back is a distraction.😁
Yep 😜
Hi Diane !!!!!!!🙂I'm an Irish American. Love you friend 😁Love your videos
This is good. I've watched a few of your videos. Just subscribed. I'm a old school American with Irish blood. No matter what we want to be John Wayne and Frank Sinatra mix. A real man anyway.
Diane, I think your hair looks great when it's down. ;)
Lol
Ryan Dyer 🤔
@@DianeJennings But I like how you wove the ends. I commented up above, but I wasn't sure if you would see it. I wish I could do that with mine, but my hair is so frizzy there is no way it would ever look like that. It's almost like a fishtail braid undone
I certainly am a foodie, but I'm also "fond of a drink" so....also, I haven't had a drink in 72 days :) yay me. :P
Good on ya
Good for you! Not easy.
All I heard was, "blah, blah, blah..." while looking at the pup loving life. Except when Editor Diane spoke. She is amazing!
Notice that D is sticking her tongue out more. I guess Chewy is rubbing off on her 😂
Diana, you are always a ray of sunshine. 😍
I think Editor Diane should make a whole video about what it's like to work with you.
I am definitely old fashioned. I open doors, pick up the check. And I expect nothing in return
You make it all seem so much fun!
As for paying for the date, feel thatwhoever asked the other person out should be the one to pay.
I advise you to give Editor Diane a raise.
Thanks ☮️❤️
I can’t help but tell you your hair looks exceptionally nice.
1st date in American is going to a fancy restaurant, and 2nd date is going to a movie.
Hi Diane. I'm and American man and I find your youtube about about American men hilarious
Your videos help fulfill the TGIF mantra! Old fashion= Chivalrous? (BTW - that is the most ‘chill’ I have seen Chewy 😊). Cheers (and stay safe)! ✌️
Butch Montoya right till the end
New sub! In college to get dates I offered the girls in my dorm to wash their laundry, at parties if i asked a girl/women on a date I always would cook dinner and have multiple bottles of wine and stocked bar available.
Over in Southern California it was pretty warm / hot yesterday. It's the same today.
A lively debate must not be confused with an arguement!
I love your dog but it's so funny how he looks like "I'm so done with this shit"
1st dates vary, but generally it revolves around a meal of some variety.
On being quick witted,
You seemed to interpret this as a statement of general intelligence. Typically in america "quick witted" is referring to your agility in conversation. Basically banter.
On the subject of debate,
I don't think this is an issue in relationships because it would be solved early on. If you get in a debate on the second date, you will either solve any potential problems at that time, or you will stop dating.
Alexis Jones, I agree, quick witted and banter are very similar from an American perspective.
I live in an area that is rural and old fashioned. It is not backwards. I just like looking out my front door across the cow pasture to the mountains.
❤ I love your channel!
(Edit: I love Scottish Lass as well!)
Great video, keep up the good work Diane.
I like sing silly lil' made up songs to my dog as well. And, I appreciate your nails. ;-)
Another excellent video!
Editor Diane = Sunglasses Goals. And we need some bloopers of her!
chicken2jail she doesn’t bloop
I tend to keep my opinions to myself unless I know them. Although if a person asks me directly I’ll tell them.
When it comes to the relationship with one’s mom; it’s the eldest child’s responsibility to take care of one’s mother. My mom was a three-time cancer survivor, a certified doctor with a Ph.D, and I was the one who helped her travel and research.
When it comes to debates; I don’t mind discussing things, but I tend to be more laid back and don’t go out for formal debates.
awe love chewie's new hair cut
I don’t have an accent, you have an accent!
😂🤣😂
Hello Diane Jennings, I as a American i do not like confrontation so much in order to get away from a ex girlfriend complaining about bills I once jumped out of a second floor apartment complex in order to keep away from conflict (I don't need the drama)
Hey Diane looking over the comments I was disappointed that there were so few offers to let you find out what dating American men was like. Wish I was younger, well a lot younger because you are definitely what we call the Total Package.
On a first date, it’s usually something casual but involves food. In my experience, we would go out for a drink but also grab some food.
Little known fact: Norman Bates was Irish...
/The More You Know 💫
Mother does not like people speaking ill of her on social media.
Happy Friday to you Diane! You look lovely as always. This was a great companion piece to your last video. I really enjoy your insights and opinions and not to mention that your vids are very entertaining. Your editing is first rate, and top notch. Do you do your own editing, or does Lenny help out? Whatever the case, job well done my lovely friend! Really enjoy your vids and are looking forward to more! They're a big help in these very trying times, and they get me out of my depression, especially with this stupid virus pandemic. Have a great weekend my lovely friend and be well and safe. All the best to you always.
Ed Keaton absolutely not! He produces the travel videos. Editor Diane does all the editing. Thanks
@@DianeJennings Oh, my apologies! I didn't think that Editor Diane had gotten that title simply for want of having a title! Thanks for the clarification my dear! Be well and safe!
In the States we pretty much grow up being taught directly as well as subliminally that the man pays on a first date, and that no "Favors" from the woman are expected........that's for the second date :)
