"Lieutenant Junior Grade and I drive submarines for a living"......awesome responsibility. Well done, Mister Andrews!
Those who wrote petty comments about ribbons and submarines should be ashamed of themselves for they not what it takes to be a submariner.

No one needs be ashamed. Attention to detail is not unreasonable to expect in an officer in charge of a nuclear reactor that moves. Still, he probably never wears ribbons and had to run to the NEX to get them when they told him he had to wear the khakis for this shoot. I served in a CSG with a SubO and he was an ultra nerd. Very, very smart guy though.

I believe the Navy to be very unique. SWO's have a very intense discipline about them. I was a SWO. I had more SWO's raise their voice at me than Marines did when I was training with marines. Marines are very intense but they just try to toughen you up and then you earn their respect. The strategic and deterring nature of the Navy keeps our nation alive. You can have 1 million soldiers on the ground but without the firepower and presence of the subs and ships everything is useless. Naval staff is not in harms way ever like ground troops are and sometimes they get flack for it but the ships and subs have their back nonetheless.

@@andresflores6296 Thanks for asking-- I did a five year enlistment and I've been out of the Navy for four years now. I got academically dropped from the Nuke ET pipeline but re-rated as a Submarine communications electronics technician (aka "radioman"). Did a couple of years in Washington state on a Seawolf-class SSN, made 2nd class petty officer (ETR2) before I got out, and I have since gone to college and graduate school on the GI Bill. I miss some of the people I met along the way, but definitely not the lifestyle. Overall, I'm glad I did it.

talking of finances and usefulness: There is a series, called "Carrier". a documentary, about the USS Nimitz. that ship was deployed to Iraq for several months and it's airplanes didn't drop a single bomb. now THAT was waste of money. Even the pilots were frustrated, because they had nothing to do there. now here we go, the whole country is one big target for an air strike, and U R saying: that armed forces consider it useless and expensive? how about almost daily attacks on the cargo vessels?

I will then be heading off for RTC training, then start my path.

When things get hot, a foe would be more nervous about having a nuclear-armed sub lingering in its backyard than he would with a jet. Nevertheless, the aviation community (alas the carrier) carries with it a significant influence in the projection of power from the sea.

There is no engagement, because there would have to be 1:1 protection of every large vessel traversing near the Somali coast to and from the Suez Gulf; too expensive and labor-intensive.
The US Navy is not sinking pirate vessels because they are small, the ocean is vast and again, you'd have to track them from the time they put in to sea. They are small enough to remain with the "noise" on most radar.
Somali pirates are a third-world problem on the backside of the world's only Hyperpower.
