My corpsman (Boat Doctor) saved my life after we went underway my appendices burst, I was the ICLPO, he kept me alive while the Uss John C. Calhoun turned around and dropped me off a Cape Canaveral Hospital. Actually, the most expensive Ambulance ride ever. and My Boat Doctor kept me alive.
I also served on a fast boat out of Hawaii, the uss684 Cavalla. I met her in dry dock in hawaii. a 23 year old E-3, we all landed in hawaii Honalula, Pearl Harbor. I had my wife a 2 year old son and a 9 month old Baby,

For those mindboggled by the Type III's (green cammies), they're the general working uniform for all Navy personnel on shore. No, they didn't phase it out for the blend-in-the-ocean issue; more so because the Type IIIs were lighter and more fire resistant than the Type IIs (blue cammies). Rather than remaking the blues with the more fire resistant material, the Navy just made everyone get the greens that were already stockpiled.
Furthermore, they wear fire resistant coveralls underway (out at sea). That sub is most likely at port doing maintenance.

When I was on a ship they handed out Ibuprofen, Sudafed, and Robotussin like it was candy. Some of my buddies would drink a whole bottle of Robotussin then go listen to Pink Floyd with the lights off in the shop.
Respect and appreciation to our current submarine sailors from a nuc attack submarine sailor (1970-1976).
One can tell from how these men talk they are very knowledgeable and professional in what they do.

A friend of mine served on board the Nimitz as a Nuc ET, but he wanted sub duty. He tried to get in, but the review board for crew selection failed him. Turned out he had one bad habit they didn't like.
He liked to sleep with the windows open.

The sailors really blend into the submarine with their camos on. It's so hard to see them.

My last boat was the West By God Virginia (SSBN 736 Gold). Three fast boats and one boomer. It was so dang big! Never did get used to it.
Served with then FT1 Skramstad on the Henry M Jackson back in the day. Good to see him still holding down the fort...
I was stationed at Bangor Washington in 1982, when the 1st Trident boat arrived. I can remember the Coast Guard turning 2 1/2 inch fire hoses on little boats and sinking them because they wouldn’t get out of the way, then the Coast Guard would scoop the, out of the water and cuff them. There was a ship that came from Australia the wizard of something, a green peace ship. The Coast Guard arrested everyone onboard and hand cuffed them on the fantail. Every Wednesday was protest day at the front gate and we would have to use another gate to get on base. It was the best duty I had in 6 years of service.

I was on the SSBN610 THOMAS A EDISON from 77 to 80. I was going to re-enlist for 6 years to go to the trident program an backed out the last second. Regret it everyday. Great times
I had the opportunity to tour the ‘USS Florida’ about 30 years ago as a Scoutmaster with a scout troop, I’m not sure who was more fascinated the adults or the scouts. Very interesting for sure.

@@lukasyaney6446 First of all , thank you for your service. ‘ Kool’ boat, all the scouts had a ‘blast’ lightning up the lunch board, “missile ready “ pull the trigger “missile away”. 🚀🚀🚀 One of our scout joined the Navy right after that to try to get into subs but he ended up having to got out for a medical problem he didn’t know he had before he enlisted.
I served on the Florida from 84 to 87. Stationed at Bangor sub-base in Washinton St.

In 1970 our bird was shot down twice and In 11 months I was shot at many many many times and was lucky enough to bring it back home and I was with out any doubt one very tough guy.. But big as my balls were I wouldn't last 1 minute on this boat...I tip my hat to these tough SOB's stay safe guys.. & THANKS !

Heck, I was pulled off the pier. And it still took people, 5-8 minutes to realize, I wasn't on the pier....
And there were 100 people there. Lost my best hat that day.....

The NEW stuff is 50% nylon. It just creates "heat exhaustion". There is no protection in an "ARC FLASH" or "GAS FLASH" y'all still git cooked....ya I have been there...

That's why uniforms changed every 4-5 yrs. All kick backs to DEMS IN GOVT.
We actually don’t wear this uniform underway or on deployments, we wear “poopie suits” or coveralls. The camouflage uniforms is just the navy’s standard working uniform

I did 4 Strategic Deterrent Patrols as an STS2 (SS) on the USS Henry M. Jackson SSBN 730. The only Trident not named after a state. (Originally the USS Rhode Island) We never wore a uniform at all underway. We wore blue one piece jumpsuits affectionately called "poopy suits"

They're wearing Navy Working Uniforms, or NWUs, not Battle Dress Uniforms. Coveralls (poopie suits) are only worn at sea, and aren't authorized to be worn off the pier

I was a Trident Training Facility ships control instructor for 4 years, made instructor of the quarter. Master of CAMS, and the acquisition of better coding for Ships control trouble shooting a electrical problem or is it Mechanical? We almost sank me being an ICLPO and HE E8 leading A ganger when all electronics are removed from your Stren Planes Servo Valve, and it fails to the Dive position. Senior Chief can not even pump it up to level then it fails. He never said he was wrong and we sat there until the engineer told me to put a meter on the Amphenol's, there pins and I told him If you and senior chief depend on electricity to get us up and on our way. his valve needs replaced I give it a 400 milliamp rise signal and the solenoid just gets hot.
How do they cope with not being exposed to natural sun light when deployed for weeks at sea? True mental endurance challenge.
Weeks? Try months. Tuff when you first come up. Pulled into Hawaii a couple of times. Was like getting hit with a brick when the Sun hit you.

Normally underway you wear the blue coveralls, most likely the boat is in port, where the day to day working uniform is worn.

I was the 5th baby born to this Submarine and still have the cup that Officers wives gave my mom and dad. My dad was on the first crew that went out in it, as sailors had kids the officers wives would bring them a small metal cup with the babies name, what number he/she was. I've always been curious if they still do that or is only when the ship or Submarine is new?

Economy of scale. Why buy different uniforms than another service if they are suitable for your use? Saves on the testing/evaluation/ purchasing costs.

It's so weird that so many people who are far more knowledgeable than I am about nuclear power persist in saying "nucular". I understand the natural inclination, since it's two "u" sounds in a row, but not why people keep saying "nucular" after being informed.
There are boats that are armed with Trident, BUT these vessels are Ohio class subs.
I am still weirded out by these men not wearing dungarees or the blue jump suits (Poopy Suits). in my time, dungarees for the normal working outfit and poopy suits for underway. USS Georgia when she was a SSBN. later.
Looks like they’re in port, we normally wear the nwu in port and out poopie suits underway, although in refit environments we sometimes wear poopie suits in port
@@lukasyaney6446 Thanks Lukas, I am old old ex-salior from the 90's. It make since this was probably film while moored in port. I remember doing the same thing a nub my first year on the boat. I was in an old Discovery film called "Sharks of Steel". We filmed about 90% of that while next to the dock. Only the maneuvers were done underway and in the Puget sound area. Are the camo dress called NWU? Thanks later
@@grast5150 yup the camos are the NWU or the Navy Working Uniform. It’s the uniform we wear when doing dirty work or standing watch on the boat in port. We wear the service uniform when going into an office setting or a less formal even that our dress uniforms wouldn’t be needed

What if someone gets sick with the FLu while on board?
The guy is wrong when he says thay no one individual can be an expert on everything about the boat....if you don't then you will not qualify for your dolphins, and more often than not you will be transferred off the boat and the Navy will put you somewhere else.

No. Being an expert and knowing the basics about something are totally different. Compared to someone not on the sub, they might seem like experts but a nuke engineer isn't going to know a whole lot about torpedos.
I believe his statement is correct. Like a cook is going to be an expert on the nuclear reactor or the Corpsman is going to be an expert on firing torpedoes. Each member has to have a working knowledge of all systems onboard a Sub. Just like getting ESWS, have to have knowledge of the whole ship in order to qualify but you better be an expert at your specific job or others will suffer because of it.
@@okiesailor5417 ESWS doesn't make you an expert, though. You might know the types of missiles on board and their range but you wouldn't have any idea how they work or how to even fire one. There is no need to know that unless you work in that department. Lived it so I know the deal.
I also lived it for 20 years, so yes I also know the deal. I didn't say ESWS made you an expert, I said you better be an expert at your specific job. When I was in, our ESWS quals required some knowledge of all aspects of a ships operations from way down in engineering all the way to the signal bridge, not just your specific job.
@@okiesailor5417 I think we are saying the same thing. I didn't qualify ESWS but I did 99% of my qual card before I got out. I was a nuke engineer and had to qualify on every system in the engine room. The qual process for ESWS was a bit of a joke in comparison. The reason I didn't finish it was because I was uninspired by the symbol. I got 99% of my card signed just by walking around and talking to people. I wasn't an expert on any of that stuff but I could easily pass the board based on what others had reported. I only did the 99% because the XO required some percentage per week... then I got out. Anyway, if you were in 20 yrs you know that NO ONE on a sub is going to be an expert on everything. The sub is huge and no human can possibly know enough about everything on it to be considered an expert. Maybe an expert compared to some average Joe on the street. But, if you take 100 guys that work in the nuke engine room (who are probably the smartest on the ship) and ask them to drive the sub out of port and dive to 100ft I guarantee you they douldn't do it without crashing into something.
I don't think I would make it on a sub. No 55 inch TV, Home theater, cramped sleeping quarters, no Tim Hortons for my coffee. lol.

I liked the utilities better than the dungarees, they were the uniform before the dungarees. The pants had pockets you could actually used and they didn’t fade after a few months. More comfortable to wear.
If we towed behind the sub a mini shopping mall and farm and living quarter then we is scare of 5 star war

Why is everyone caught up with the BDUs? I am retired AF, but I have to acknowledge the Navy has the best training of all the services. After all what else are you going to on a ship for 6 months.
Not BDUSs, as these are not the "battle dress" uniforms, but these are NWUs, Navy Working Uniforms. Theyre designed to be able to hide dirt or grime or grease.
And yeah, the training never stops, even on mission >.>

That's some balls. 1 month after 9/11 in Miami going out. Gave a thumbs up to a trooper/national guard. He came over and tried to accost me. Told him to call his sergeant. No Sergeants. And no orders.

Very impressive! And, I mean that in a good way. I will also say that it is VERY expensive!! Which is why, I believe, Austria does not want to join NATO. They are landlocked and as a neutral country they do not have, need, or even want a navy. They have no problems with not having a Navy and not having to spend anything on such an institution. If they joined NATO then some of their annual dues would go to a navy.
That's why France quit NATO and kicked US Troops out of France.....1952-4???

You have to wear a uniform while on shift. The camouflage uniform is comfortable, has lots of pockets, is hard to stain, and. Does not need ironing. The tan shirt and slacks are made of polyester, stains easily, and is hot and not breathable, and requires ironing and starching. Now, what uniform would you choose to wear?
I noticed that HM1(SS) Romero isn't wearing his dolphins. When I was in, and as soon as I qualified in submarines, I made sure that my dolphins that I worked hard for were always on me. I would rather wear a uniform without my name on it then wear one without my dolphins. Hopefully, he fixed his uniform after the interview.
