I'm surprised that he didn't mention Superman's heat vision repairing The Great Wall of China
I feel like that's a part of number 7.
We don’t wanna talk about that.
The glasses thing has a reason. I've seen a scientific explanation for it, and some people even lost a look a like contest for themselves, and an actor stood next to his movie poster and nobody noticed. It has to do with the Brain's processing.
The glasses thing was just one part of Superman's disguise. It's actually one piece of a larger puzzle.
1) Clark Kent slouches while Clark but stands up straight while Superman in order to make it seem that there's a height difference between them.
2) Clark Kent wears clothes that are at least one size too large to hide the fact that his body is so we'll developed and muscular.
3) As Clark Kent he speaks with a Kansas accent, while changing his accent when speaking as Superman.
4) He acts as a clumsy doofus while Clark Kent so people won't associate him with being the paragon of perfection that Superman is.
5) He wears glasses. But not just any glasses. He wears glasses with thick lenses and thick black frames which distort his face, making the difference between him with them on and without them to be very jarring.
Putting ALL of those elements together and it's at least somewhat feasable that people wouldn't recognize that Clark Kent and Superman are one and the same. They even touched on some of these things in the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2, which had Lois using her skills as an investigative reporter to deduce Superman's true identity rather than finding out by accident.
Yeah, the thing is people are that stupid. The glasses are a valid disguise.
Hiding in plain sight. Basic psychology.
Funny thing is, Henry Cavill walked around the premiere of BvS wearing a Superman t-shirt and no one recognized him.
Lmfao
I like Superman from the Animated Series and Justice League Animated Series. He wasn't terribly overpowered, he was a nice guy. In fact he was tied in forms of strength with Martian Manhunter. In fact him and Batman were best friends, like Supergirl and Flash in the live action Crossover in the T.V. show. As it should be. Superman fills Batman with hope and compassion. Batman grounds Superman down in reality and humanizes him even more than Lois or his adoptive Kent parents. They compliment each other. The perfect Superhero friendship. To me that's THE Superman. The only Superman. The original creators of Superman never wanted Superman to be this ridiculously overpowered, feel free to blame that on some of the crappy D.C. writers. He's more like a hero from an alien world trying to fit in and be a good person, and learn what it means to be human. Also the very early comics show him training to get better and humbling himself to learn under several alien teachers, kinda like Goku right? I agree that Kryptonite weakness is dumb, but the Film Theory about Ionized and Unionized Radiation makes sense and kinda explains it, but I dunno.
So in short, ridiculous comic book Superman I don't care for. Animated Series and Justice League Series I love. Also the Lois and Clark and new Rebirth Superman I really love. In fact it's the only time I've ever been excited to read a Superman Comic and I'm glad I read them.
What about the new tv show Lois & Superman.
And is Superman who humanizes Batman. Bruce became an unbearable jerk in the last few seasons. Clark is human by heart.
What I love is that they do imply animated Superman is overpowered but then there’s moments like the legendary “world of cardboard” speech. He’s constantly holding back trying not to break something or someone on accident.
About the “Glasses As A Disguise” issue.
1) Clark’s glasses are supposed to be pretty thick, with thick black frames which act almost like a domino mask (the type of mask worn by Robin, Green Arrow, Speedy, etc). In reality they don’t really do much to hide your identity, but in superhero comics and movies people just can’t recognize you if you have one on.
2) The glasses are just one part of a much more elaborate disguise. Unfortunately this doesn’t come off very well in the movies. But in addition to the glasses, Clark also wears suits that are one size too big in order to hide his physique. He also wears a fedora very regularly, which also helps to obscure his identity. He slouches in order to give the impression that he is actually shorter than he really is. And on top of it all, he acts like a clumsy buffoon as Clark Kent in order to avert suspicion (much like how Don Diego acted like an intellectual pansy while secretly working as Zorro).
3) Removing your glasses actually can alter your appearance enough that people might not recognize you. Here in Canada there’s a show called “Trailer Park Boys” with a character named Bubbles played by actor Mike Smith. The character of Bubbles wears thick Coke bottle glasses which totally obscure his face. The actor Mike Smith doesn’t wear glasses at all. So when Mike is walking down the street just as himself, nobody recognizes him as Bubbles because he isn’t wearing the damn glasses. (Seriously, look up photos of Mike Smith and Bubbles and compare them side by side, the difference is night and day)
11:45 i love how he (michah?) played that off in the background.
*Theotian Yarttar* - *Micah
To be fair, in the comics they do try to explain how the glasses work; he does more. Not only does he wear glasses, but he changes his posture, disguises his voice, and pretty much does everything he can to not look like Superman. Now it's up to the fans of this makes sense or not, but honestly, that feels more like an explanation than just saying he puts on a pair of glasses.
oh it does, there's a LOT of real-world precedent, go to tvtropes chek out the real-life section under clark kenting. Among other things he changes every apect of his face, then his height, makes his muscles look like loose chub and loses his grace, there's nothing LEFT to recognise him by.
Say what you will about the flying around the Earth and turning back time scene, but the scene before that with Superman finding Lois dead and the scream he lets out is my favorite part of the movie. You can hear the rage and grief and guilt that he is feeling in that moment.
Red Son, Last Son Of Krypton, World Without a Superman, Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow? and Birthright.
All AMAZING stories. The way you just dismiss Superman as "OP" tells me you haven't read very many Superman books. I can see that from the others but you too, Ben? I thought you would actually enjoy the internal struggle of Superman but I guess you're just as "HULK SMASH" as the others. At least Micah brought up a decent point. Superman needs his own stories. You can't throw him into the world of a Batman or an Aquaman without REALLY writing the story just for Superman. It hardly ever works.
Also, without Superman (and to a lesser extent, The Phantom and Dick Tracy) all those other comics you know and love probably wouldn't exist.
+chris koloski Superman's struggles aren't whether he can do something, they're whether he SHOULD do it.
Yes, some versions of Superman are like that, but many aren't, especially the better ones (look at Superman the Animated Series). The Superman from Earth-2 is the one that's basically unbeatable. Superman very often has definite limits, and there are a lot of villains/heroes that can challenge Superman, or even beat him. Darseid, Zod (and his crew), Metallo, Mongul, Doomsday, the Anti-Monitor, Brainiac, Parasite, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Power Girl, the Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Orion, the Flash (his infinite mass punch has been shown to be enough to knock Supes out), hell the Specter is literally divine vengeance given physical form. Plus Superman is *quite* vulnerable to magic, and there are a number of highly powerful magic users in the DCU.
ImInfinite MidWest
I have, he's still overrated.
I like his Rebirth version though.
Paul Dini also worked on Superman the animated series
Superman didn't spin the earth backwards - he went back in time. Besides, goofier stuff than that happens all the time in the comic books. Superman I was a masterpiece.
By the way has anyone else noticed during the "flying recap scene" that Superman and Lois somehow are flying through New York AND San Francisco at the same time??????
Thank you! Superman didn't turn back time by spinning the Earth backwards, the Earth was spinning backwards because time was turning back. Superman was flying around the Earth to build up enough speed to go back in time without having to go past Pluto. And Superman doesn't do it more often for the same reason the Flash doesn't, remember the Flash is (in most versions) faster than Superman. And the glasses are just one part of Superman's disguise, more things change than are shown: posture, voice, personality, physical presence. Most people in the comics don't even think Superman has a secret identity. *Lex Luthor* fired people for suggesting that Superman would pretend to be a normal human.
You guys need to react to Nostalgia Critic Man of Steel & then watch the one for Batman v Superman
even better idea
Yes please react to those PLEASE. Renegades React
yes man of steel and batman vs superman
Lol I love the Nostalgia Critic. I'm glad you guys did this video.
Superman DOES have limits. Some writers don't understand that and just make him do the most ridiculous stuff they can imagine.
well...superman took acting lessons , and as clark kent , he acts nerdy ,clumsy ,he has a whiny voice, etc. combined with the suit and the glasses is a nice disguise.(superman has a commanding , imponent voice , even the actitude is different)
also, superman is a GOD combined to humans, the people think someone as superman doesn't need a secret identity so , they don't bother looking for it...
One thing I'd add: Freaking Martha from Batman V Super Dawn of Letdown.
Uh...that movie established pretty well that Batman was just losing his mind.
Timed Revolver
Still a stupid scene.
***** Batman makes a lot of really bad decisions in pretty much every medium. He's insane, it happens.
Timed Revolver
I know, but in my opinion, a better way to solve that situation would have been for Superman to tell him his mother was in danger. It could have had the same effect, since Batman's mother was also murdered.
***** I'm not defending the decision, just saying it does make sense ofr a bonkers Batman to assume Superman meant Martha Wayne. Remember, someone had been playing mind games with him. He wasn't in a normal state of mind.
Superman is no where near limitless. He's not as overpowered as screw attack made everyone think and he's no where near the most powerful character in dc or marvel.
Here's a brain teaser:
Hum the jurassic park theme,
Then hum the Indiana jones theme,
Then try to hum the superman theme
Hearing about Kevin Spacey in 2017.
Awkward...
you guys should read superman all-stars,
Best,superman,ever
Don't forget Kingdom Come,Red Son,and Superman Earth 1?
Jackie Lee all stars is the most "supermany" of the top notch superman storys, thts why sugested
joao sturza It is.
Yes they should!! All-Star Superman is the ultimate Superman story, with the best representation of the character and his ideals...
John Byrne Superman series!
It's not actually the glasses themselves that disguise him. It's how he holds himself as Clark Kent. The meek, humble country boy. It's so different from how he holds himself as Superman that people disregard the possibility of them being the same. There's a comic where Lex Luthor builds a machine that tells him Superman's real identity and he refuses to believe it. It's actually something Batman does, make Bruce Wayne so different a person that people disregard all evidence that they are the same. Hell that's how most secret identities work. something to think about.
do a reaction to Nostalgia Critic - Alone In The Dark
in a daylight with a Flashlight
Superman is cool! I mean he's not my favorite superhero, but I think he's pretty awesome at times
please react to nostalgia critic batman v superman
yassss
+mew02003 :D please
sasuke270 13 good point
+Joshua Peters nah it's too long
yes pls
actually in the 1970s John Byrne man of steel run they explained it as not JUST the glasses that disguise him. he changes the pitch of his voice, changes his posture, and he changes his hair style. couple that with the effect surrounding celebrities when they're around normal people where people might go "hey he looks familiar" but never for an instant actually think " IT'S THAT CELEB!!"
"We understand superman" uses the same argument everyone else uses.
He forgot the laser vision that can fix walls
I feel like you guys don't know this
But superman does have limits. He's not even in the top 20 of his own universe.
He has been defeated, outsmarted, and out witted before.
Don't let that Screw attack death battle fool you.
superman isn't limitless
7:47 - No, his strength is actually Plot Convenience. Psionic powers make peoples' heads explode. And that's one power he hasn't shown that he has... yet. Give it a few years, and I'm sure they'll work that into his library-size list of powers.
Hey, if they can work in super basket-weaving (yes that really happened) they can work in anything!
@@ethanfairbanks867 Well, Superman didn't make somebody's head explode yet, but in Superman: Year One, he now has telepathy apparently. I know this has been around for awhile, but I just had the 'pleasure' of reading it for the first time a couple months back. Then Linkara did a video on it.
Guys, if you don't like Superman, that's fine. We get it. But keep in mind that there are people who watch you who are Superman fans, who are pretty sick of you constantly ripping on him. So if you don't like him, just don't talk about him!
What's even more funny is robot chicken did a skit for the kissing ability.
Ya beat me to it...
I'm sorry but what happened to the "Fix the Great Wall" vision in Superman 4? That was probably as stupid as the stupid kiss.
I heard somewhere that in a superman comic it was established that his face emitted some sort of low-level hypnosis where all it does is keep people oblivious of the fact that he looks similar to superman. I think this power was only used when he was Clark Kent though.
The whole flying around the Earth to reverse time is scientifically accurate.
Really?
@@chendror872 Yes.
The glasses always got me too. Even the TV show Lois and Clark. I remember a little of. A guy was mocking Lois by taking glasses on and off and saying Clark Kent-Superman-Clark Kent-Superman and Terri was super confused lol And don't get started with time rewind by spinning Earth backwards
Robot Chicken did bits for both the amnesia kiss and the turning back time ones.
That last scene can be actually explained. He isn't turning the earth he is time traveling so the earth is going back with the time. So that can explain why that scene exist. I don't have an explanation for the other events that followed. Think of that scene like a video clip if you go back in time then the video plays backwards. There are a couple of videos that explain this better.
That's what Ben was saying, but they didn't make it obvious enough for the majority of people to get it.
That makes sense...you still can do that though.
+maxdrags3 can't*
Maybe he's time travelling through speed like the Flash.
I'm surprised that fixing the Great Wall wasn't on this list.
Geoff Johns got hired on after the disaster that was the dramatic drop in revenue after consecutive weeks. DC took control, hired him on, swapped some of the directors, gave a guideline to the tone for the rest of the movies, and practically castrated Zach Snyder in terms of creative control. Not to mention the Affleck/Johns Batman movie coming in the future looks promising.
You guys should read all-star superman by Grant Morrison, superman red son by Mark Millar, superman: brainiac by Geoff Johns, and whatever happened to the man of tommorow by Allan Moore. Also react to atop the fourth wall Youngblood reviews, all-star batman and robin reviews, 2099 videos, ultimates 3 review, ultimatum review, holy terror review and ultimate power reviews. I would also like you to react to that long haired creepy guy Scooby doo on zombie island, Scooby doo and the witch's ghost and his x-men videos
The Great Wall of China-fixing ray.
well, main explanation for the glasses: more than just the looks, his behavior, the way he moves is completely different as Clark Kent, much more shy. THAT is his disguise, the glasses are just one part of it.
in brazil doomsday is called "apocalipse" so you aways have to say the owner of the caracter before the name like "marvel's apocalipse" or "DC's apocalipse" its quite a mess sometimes XD
Ok, someone's gotta make an opening for Superman in the style of Hannnah Montana right now!
You should react to some of the Jon & Al / legolambs musicals: "Neeson Season", or "The Room: The Musical"
They could do a character switch from lex jr to Riddler though i have no clue how that would come about whether he goes crazy or some other means
I've seen the first Superman when I was 8 years old.
Talk about a great taste of movies at such a young age. When i was 8 i saw movies like Predator and Terminator 2 on VHS.
NerdSync did a video on Why people can't figure out Superman's identity and a number of other people most likely did as well.
React to the Honest Trailer for Man of Steel, please. Also, if you want a good Wonder Woman movie, watch the 2009 animated Wonder Woman movie.
In the comics back during the silver age I think. Superman has hypnosis that makes everyone see Clark Kent as weak and superman as strong.
I like him...but I’m more of a Batman fan. You could make the argument that they both are Mary Sues but god damn it, I can’t imagine the world being better without superman. And Batman is awesome as shit not because he’s perfect cause he’s not. He’s a miserable man who was broken ever since he lost his parents. He knows he’s fighting a never ending battle but his perspective is much like him Gordon’s in the dark knight returns.
You can only hope that you didn’t leave things worse off then when you started
I always have to laugh when people hate Superman because he's overpowered and wins all the time but love Batman because he's overpowered and wins a lot. _
Garret Griffith here think it comic we know they will win but it hard to make a good story around superman because very few people can even hold there on when fighting him
Wait, he referenced the Korn: Follow the Leader album? I was also confused.
I saw an fan idea concept for a Superman, than rather than humanoids Kryptonians, they are more alien-esqe shapeshifters. Clark is a skinny nerdy form, while Supes is buff and muscular form.
"All parts aside, that theme is friggin' awesome."
"It's pretty good."
"It's. . . it's, you know, an epic theme --"
"It's a shame that it's wasted on Superman." HA!
*****
I read this comment from someone and . . .
"When a character has no limit, any victory feels hollow because it doesn't feel like they deserved it." Huh. Rey, from the sequel trilogy to Star Wars, and Superman. . . Even though Superman came first, they both embody this. It's like this:
The minute the writers for the two of them (Superman in 1986, Rey in The Last Jedi) made them overpowered, they gave up on making them interesting characters.
"A character struggles, overcoming their weaknesses to achieve something greater and has to hit their limit and push beyond it with blood, sweat and tears so that the audience can cheer all the more when they succeed." Unless I'm missing some other characters, Batman and Guts (from Berserk) embody this. The fact that they both CLEARLY embody this, is exactly why they're both icons AND characters.
BUT, FOR SOME FU**ING UNKNOWN REASON, EVERYONE ELSE LABELS THIS AS "PLOT ARMOR"! (sigh) At least they don't do this with Spider-Man.
Ranking the Superman Movies from Worst to Best:

Justice League

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Superman
1:41 unless he's Saitama
There’s a Gold Kryptonite that end Superman’s power forever (like Superman become Powerless 🚫)
You guys make Superman out to be like the ultimate character when there are dozens upon dozens of other characters in the DC Universe that make him out to actually be pretty weak.
One theory I heard about the glasses is that as superman he uses his super-speed at a minute level to vibrate and make himself look slightly blurred so that when he is caught on camera or seen from a certain distance, he always looks blurred and the glasses actually draw away from the more obvious features when not obscured at a closer distance. It is a weak theory and I personally find the whole disguise weak. At least Martian Manhunter can shape-shift.
React to the Batman Vs Superman Nostalgia Critic episode!
That always drove me nuts in any movie or cartoon. Like the sailor moon anime. They literally are just wearing a different outfit, yet no one recognizes them!? -_-
React to overwatch epic rap... 21 heroes! by Dan Bull
I just read about thew whole mental thing with lois lanes actress. Turns out she had the incident due to losing 3 years worth of work for her biography i believe
I know this is probably a bit much but could we get critic and angry joes man of steel review reaction? I understand if it's too long
A Question?
Would Nuclear Man be a good villain if Superman IV didn't suck.
who wants to go around being 'super' all the time ???? can you imagine superman going grocery shopping in that outfit ????
They're fooled because they don't think he is the kind of guy to be Superman, that's why no one can tell that he's Superman.
Could you guys react to Mr. Plinkett's "responses" to Nostalgia Critic over the Star Wars Prequels?
i think with the success of the DC live action series, they should of built on those. you introduce the characters in theyre shows and what not, then Make a justice league movie that connects.... the movie Universe dosent seem to be working for DC
that's why I prefer Lois and Clark: the New Adventures of Superman. they gave a nice balance between his dual identities, giving focus to both his "alieness" and human upbringing. at one point when Lois finds out during a time travel episode, he even says "Superman is what I can do. Clark is who I am." I respect the other versions for what they bring to the mythos (Smallville got a little too convoluted for my taste a few seasons in, but to each their own), but I still say LoC got the characterization and so on much more naturally than anything else I've seen.
28:18 hey ben how about bryan cranston as commisioner gordon in the new batman movie?
The whole "he's too perfect" argument is stupid. There are plenty of stories that show his flaws and his struggles to fit into society and the struggles of appearing to be a god to the very people he wants to protect.
NeutralGuyDoubleZero Ya just superman hater logic.
Funny enough Hannah Montana actually made a joke about he glasses thing.
React to A Clone Apart series from AlphaNova pls.
I second that suggestion.
React to Stephen King's It - Nostalgia Critic
If they need to restart just get Flash to screw up the timeline
1:39 - Literature would call Superman the definition of a Gary Stu.
2:00 - I prefer the Avatar from Ultima. He isn't a god like Superman. It's one thing to try and be the shining example when you have a power for everything, but it's another thing altogether when you don't have the ability to do a million things at once.
17:41 what about the 'healing coma'?
Well the "people are just letting him have a life" thing is a terrible excuse for the glasses.
Why Why erase Lois memory if that were the case?
And no way would no body spread that info. If just everyone at the planet knew then it'd get leaked so fast it'd make your head spin. Everyone would know and everyone would be harassing him 24/7 at the planet.
10:32-10: SOMEBODY NOTICE SEMPAI!?!?
please react to the Alvin and the Chipmunks nostalgia critic. It is the funniest ending I have ever seen from him.
God you guys are awesome
My mom loves Richard Prior.
Please react to Nostalgia Critic's Mad Max Fury Road review at some point?
I wish they had the Lex Luthor off of Smallville that was a good Lex Luthor. I forgot his name though
There's a hero with no limit.. Saitama. Yet.. he's interesting.
I think Superman is the most OP character we’ve ever created.
You got the beeeessst of both worlds~
Chill it out, take it slow~
Then you're a superhero~
You should really watch NC and Angry Joe's Batman v Superman review.
Can you do a reaction to Nostalgia Critic's Top 11 Nostalgic F*ck Ups, please?
where is the reaction to '' Overwatch shorts: Hero ''?
I know you guys are probably having alot to do, and I dont want to be mean or anything with this question.
But I just wondering, because this question have been burning in my mind for a long time... So I just had to ask.
But again, no disrespect or anything to you guys.. I love watching your guys reactions, but I had to ask.
ya'll should read Max Landis's American Alien
I can defend the glasses, nobody expects Clark to be superman. Also people can look like other people.
Please watch NC Lady in the Water
14:54 robot chicken already did it
4:56 - The current Superman movies make me appreciate Superman Returns a lot more, because at the time I had no idea it was going to get this bad.
lol even batman made fun of superman's secret identity
batman vs superman was alot better on the snyder cut and alot more of it made sense, the cuts the production company were ridiculous
