Sometimes I like a downer ending, sometimes I like a happy ending. Like the Nostalgia Critic said: As long as it matches the tone of the movie, I'm good.
The alternate ending makes no sense though. The mutated people were attacking and murdering innocent people so there is no way them suddenly being sympathetic at the end could work. They made the right decision changing it to be a happy ending for the actual good guys in the story which were the non mutated people. The only way they could have gotten the message they were originally going for across was if they had non mutated people start persecuting and hurting the mutated people until they start fighting back which leads to a war between them. That would show that they weren't basically mind controlled while still being their true self on the inside, into hurting innocent people because of the virus, and were still able to be their true self on the outside as well as on the inside, and that non mutated people attacked first and with no justified reason. Only if they did that could they make the original I Am Legend ending work because it would be the only way the main character actually could be realistically seen as being the monster. You can't have them do these horrible things to innocent people and then suddenly have them still be able to be themselves on the outside. Those two things can't work together and would have made the message a forced one with bad ideology. The true ending they went with is much better.
BigGator5 yeah the tone and the narrative Drive can easily determine what ending works best. A happy ending in a dark work can work if it's actually earned, giving us that sense that the hero achieved though it may have come at a Great cost. At the same time, a darker ending for a lighter work can work if the message is meant to show why you just can't be that lighthearted. Example A: Elysium Example B: Saturday Night Fever.
BigGator5 Same. Like with Little Shop of Horrors, the dark ending is awesome, but it doesn't match the tone of this version it. And with I Am Legend, the downer ending fits the tone better, which is why I always watch the movie with the original ending.
To explain the alternative ending for “Little Shop of Horrors” the one in the Director’s Cut where the plant wins was how the broadway show ends and the original ending for the film, but it didn’t do well with Test Audiences so they had to go make a new ending where not only does Audrey survive, but also Seymour defeats the plant, marries Audrey and the live happily ever after!
Yeah, sometimes I love and then hate test audiences. In that case, I love them that they made them change that ending. I think if it was someone other than Rick Moranis, it would've been fine... but God, you just loved him the moment you saw him. Now, test audiences have screwed up, like Major League when Rachel Phelps actually freaking Moneyballed everything to get the Indians to win! Nope, they wanted her to stay the villain!
another wtf ending you may know is to star wars return of the jedi. though this was not shot, it was originally pitched by lucas. the ending was basically during vader's funeral pyre, where luke feels depressed about how much loss that has happened, takes vader's helmet and says something along the lines of "i'll finish what you started". yeah, that really happened.
Honestly that acting from Andrew Garfield in the alternate Spider-man ending is fantastic. I would've loved to see that in an actual different script where the scene made sense. Also I'm in the camp of people who prefer the ending where it's revealed in I Am Legend that Will Smith's character is the bad guy vs the ending where humanity is saved. I find it has more nuance and a much more interesting twist on WHY he's a legend. He's their boogeyman, their monster. I like it better than "hooray humanity is saved now".
Good day, ladies and gentlemen. This is your Caleb speaking. If you look over to 3:18, you will find the start of your reaction. Thank you, and have a nice day.
There was the Clue alternate ending where basically everyone dies. Luckily the director didn't like it and it was scrapped, though published in a book once. But even the endings of Clue were kinda flawed.
I think that was kind of the whole joke with Clue. The endings are basically just every alternate "mystery solved" wrap-up scenario every detective movie has, since the endings are basically all anyone really wants to get to when watching detective movies just to see who the killer was, so the alternate endings are basically a big middle finger to that mindset.
So for the Little Shop of Horrors ending My high school actually did a play of Little Shop of Horrors and they used the alternate ending which was kinda weird seeing
Speaking of endings and Nostalgia Critic, he did another interesting editorial titled "Can an Ending Ruin a Film?", just suggesting this one in particular... no other reason at all.
Fun fact: in Germany the drama version of Little Shop of Horrors has the "downer ending", which has the plants take over the Earth but still keeps a cheery tone when the ending finally is delivered.
I know I'm new to the whole requesting thing, but I think you should do a reaction to the Nostalgia Critic's review of Cool World. That is one of my recent favorite review and I would love to see you guys reacting to it.
The theatrical ending to I Am Legend confused me because the trailer showed scenes that were not in the finished version, and there was a feeling that there was more to the movie than what we ended up getting. I was mixed on the film when it came out, just feeling unsatisfied but yet still interested. Then, years later, I watched the alternate ending and was blown away by how it made the film feel complete. To me, the alternate ending is canon.
The reason they changed the ending to i am legend was because will smith leaked the ending. So they released the movie with the ending he didn't leak. That if I remember correctly, it's been a while.
Dawn of the dead (1978) original ending (which ended up being scrapped) also was a wtf moment..well less of a wtf moment and more of a “god that’s depressing” moment
I hered thay change the Dr strangelove ending because during the pie scean the presedent was hit by a pie and someone said that he was "cut down in his prime" or somthing like that, and the premiered was january 29 1964, two mouth after Kenedy was shot.
Nate, and Ben I know you read the comments and I want you to know and acknowledge that I think the both of you are adorable. you make me laugh and in my opinion you guys are actually pretty good looking. Mica honestly just looks like a guy I went to high school with which I like him too but, I'm used to guys like him I prefer the bubbly energy that you guys bring. So next time you see me in a live stream asking for hugs, its because I want you to know that you guys are awesome too.
I think the cropduster ending COULD have worked in its own corny way. Thr alien fighters have no trouble tracking and blasting jets, but they get thwarted by lower tech, like parachutes. So, showing they can't track, or maybe even can't SEE the cropduster could have worked.
The alternative ending to “The Lion King” is an interesting one. Where Simba dies and Scar isn’t killed by the Hyenas, but the fire he caused on Pride Rock!!!

Sigh I will never forget the day the entire theater gave my friend and I the death stare of doom when we burst out laughing at WIll Smiths facial expression in the dog scene near the end, We honestly though we were going to get shived by the girls which were the majority of people there that day. And no we weren't laughing at him having to do the thing I would rather kill myself to do or at the poor dog but his face at that moment just got to us and we couldn't help it.
That scene is sad to animal lovers without context but man once you watch the film you realize the dogs not only his only freind which is sad but its like a daughter to him too which stings 3 times as much ...literally...he was reanacting basically killing his own child in his mind because the dog was the last gift she gave him before she died saying protect it and he treated it as a reminder of her as if he was raising her ...which he never got the chance to cause she was taken from him
While I was fine with the endings they went with for each movie, the alternate endings to Fatal Attraction and Final Destination would have been the better choices. They would have left the audience with deeper things to think about and been probably more fitting.
The alternate ending of Dodgeball is really weird, because it ends with the main characters losing. And after Vince Vaughn's character is hit, he just looks destroyed, and then it fades to the credits.
@@aidanrutter257 Oh, yeah, 3 was amazing until we got to the end. And as much as I hate the ending of Mass Effect 3, the trilogy (Andromeda can remain in the trash where it belongs) is still one of my favorite games. I just had to get myself a addon to change the ending XD

the I am legend ending went for this and it ruined a great movie in my opinion. KNowing the alternate ending was so good, made the one we got shit
The alternate ending makes no sense though. The mutated people were attacking and murdering innocent people so there is no way them suddenly being sympathetic at the end could work.
