    Hello Marcus, another enjoyable video. Your passion for your M-D is very clear, and the camera clearly works very well for you. I use an M9, M(240) and have recently added an SL. I personally think I would struggle without a back screen, even though I also occasionally use an M6, but you are a great advocate for a screen less camera. Really enjoying your channel 👍

    Hello Marcus,
    Yes, the M system is a unique experience. I think that learning on a manual system is a better route into photography. It is harder to nail down those skills, but worth it in the end.

    I'm strictly a film shooter. I have the M3, which Is pretty much my go-to camera, and I have several other types of cameras. If I were to ever decide to shoot digital, I would, out of all probably, purchase the M-D. It's the closest thing to shooting film since it doesn't have a viewing screen.
    When I'm out shooting with the Leica, someone will usually come up to me and inquire about the camera, asking if it's a Leica. Sometimes it's annoying because I'm into the shooting process, but it's all good. Nice video with lots of info - wasn't long enough. :)

    I sold my M262 for the M-D and was absolutely besotted with it. I ended up trading it in for an M10 and eventually traded that for the M10-D. It’s incredibly subjective and the M-D cameras divides opinions but I adore the simplicity and feel of shooting like what I do with my film cameras. Great content again 👍📸

    I was so pleased when Leica introduce the M60 concept and was praying inside to that Leica add this formula(a screenless M) in their line up. Then the M-D was introduced. Black paint, iso dial, and as a bonus, in the top side of the body, the step (à la M9 wich elevate the design imo) in place of the micro of the M240. I had at this time (and still) the M240 but the M-D was my wish/dream camera. Then the 10-D. Same formula as the M-D but perfected. A huge and bright viewfinder, film M body size with a "natural" thumbs'up perfectly iintegred, silent shutter etc. . My question is this, as an M-D concept fan : why or should I say how did you resist the M10-D upgrade ?

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  4 года назад +2

      Thanks a lot. I like the look of the original M-D more and even from a usability perspective I find the old one better. The ISO dial on the original is just in the perfect place and an Hommage to the film Leicas. The M10-D has the ISO dial where the M10 has it. I found that decision poor of Leica but understand it from a cost savings perspective. And then last but not least it’s price. But who knows, I might add one to my collection one day.

  • @KnutSandaker

    Very interesting! My first M was the M9Monochrom, and I really liked it, but b&w only was too limitating for me. My next was the M240, and I builded a kit around it, big mistake. I now am considering a M-D because I think it will be the sweet spot for me based on my previous Leica experiences. I will limit to 2 lenses, a 35mm (or 40mm) and a 90mm. A yes, I also have Nikon DSLR for all the other stuff and also a Fujifilm X100S :) To me the perfect camera would be a Nikon FM-2 with a digital sensor, but this is not likely to ever be prodused.. ( I know about the Nikon Zfc, but no thanks) Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with the camera, it makes my decisionmaking easier!

    Last summer I "touched" the M10-D at Leica Store in Wetzlar. Since then I keep on saving! Well, I would like to comment another thing on digital Leicas: I own both an M8 and M9. As everybody knows they have no wifi connection, but (and this is a big "but") I use a portable router that has a SD card reader (please google it for example as "ravpower sd card"). Is a rather small device that allows me to transfer the pictures from my Leica to my smartphone or iPad in a short time. I choose the RAW+jpg format and then the smaller jpg size. It works like a charm.

    Hi Marcus. This was a fun video. I have an M10 and have had other film (MP and M7) and digital (M240) cameras in the past. The M10D really appeals to me, not only for its simplicity of design and the resulting necessity to think about your exposure and focus more carefully, but also because it reminds me very much of my old film bodies, which I no longer have. My dilemma now is that I think the new Monochrom also looks like a fantastic camera, although it has that “surplusage” (screen) glued to the back. Now, if Leica would only make a Monochrom D. I’m sure they would sell two or three of them :)

    Hey Marcus, when you were talking about the police confrontation, did you know that you're able to view your pictures with the wifi feature via the Leica app on the phone... Isn't this one of the unique features of the MD!! Just found your channel, like your knowledge of the Leica system. I plan on getting the M10 but probably used. I currently shoot with the a Nikon D750 and D850, always shot with Nikon since 70s, but, did learn more about photography by self-teaching myself with other systems as well, ie Leica M6, Minolta CL, Sony, Olympus, Fuji (x100f) and most recently I returned to Leica via Vario-x and Q...i think with digital and automation, it was hard getting back around to Leica M system, but I was able to get that unique Leica image with the Vario-X and Q. I think in my retirement I will slow down and may consider getting the M10... But not for street photography because my Vario-x and Q are quick and silent. I know with the M system, I may find a new photography style, and re-join the M club...

      Hey Thomas. Thanks for watching and your comment. Glad you dropped by. As for looking at the photos via Wifi. That is a M10-D feature. The original M-D which I own doesn't have Wifi. Fingers crossed that you find a good offer for a M10 and can join the M club.

    The M10-D is the most appealing digital camera to me (as a film MP shooter), if I were to buy a digital camera. The only thing slightly holding me back is knowing that with a screen and Live View you can accomplish some really interesting angles which with the M10-D or M-D would be hard or impractical. Or is the M10 Monochrom the most tempting to me? Man, so many nice Leicas 🙂

      The M Monochrome is also amazing.

Is it possible with the MD?

    • @TheMPhotography

      The M-D has no timer. It is a camera that needs to be operated by the photographer. Technically if you as the photographer want to be in the picture your only hope would be a shutter release cable.

I dont like the thick shape of the 240 as I feel it is moving away from the design that is the M3, but leica could not help it as the electronics forced them to thicken it. although the M60 is as thick, it looks like its on the slimmer end as it has no thumb dial and the the top plate height is less. Well enjoy the M-D its a great body, something unique that makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd!

      Thanks a lot for your long reply. Since I also own two M6 I know what you mean by thick. I got used to it and it doesn't bother me a lot. Technical limitations at that time forced the thickness of the M240. Guess the M10-D would be slim. Enjoy your M60 kit. A keeper.

    I also began with Nikon and now I use a Leica M8 and M10, after a while I stopped using the screen. And the M8 has such a cover that I'm even not able to find the button for the screen. I enjoy shooting like that, my images are better than before because I think about the composition and the light

      Thanks. Absolutely valid reason to have a screen. Fully understand that. The M10-D can connect to the phone for reviewing photos and settings. It was brilliant of Leica to do so. If they would've done that on the original they might have sold more M-Ds.

    I've been using a camera for more than 60 years and most of it with film cameras. I started digital with M43 cameras and then Fuji, but I missed the simplicity of film cameras. So last year I sold everything and bought an M9. Then a few months later an M8. I never use the LCD to look at the photos I take and only use it for menu access. Not quite as simple as the M-D but very close. A major difference is, you only get DNGs out of the M-D, which require post processing, and I only shoot jpegs, mostly color. One of the reasons I love both of my Ms is the unique colors that the CCD sensors in the M8 and M9 produce.

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  4 года назад

      William, thanks for watching and your feedback. Yeah, the CCD has it's charm indeed. And you are right the M-D produces only DNGs. It's truly like with film that you need to do post processing (like in the darkroom). It's as raw and similar to film as you can get.

    I enjoy using my M10-D. The only time I found it a bit inconvenient is when I have to adjust exposure when shooting portrait under strong backlight with 28mm or 35 mm lens by switching to spot metering mode. Sometimes I would just make an educated guess by using the exposure compensation dial on its back and hope for the best.

    and again a great video, only one thing i don't really agree. I think it's a perfect beginners camera, because you are forced to think about what you're doing. when you shot on an iphone you're not learning anything. i started photographing with a M6 (never sell your M6) and later sold it for a M8 and later this one for a M240. The M240 was my least favorite one, maybe because of the thickness. I recently got a really great deal on a used M10-D. This camera is outstanding and pure shooting pleasure, like my film M6 but with the convenience of digital. The iso dial on the back would be perfect though. keep on, and check out some Leica shots on instagram @ronaldpiecek. Grüße aus München

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  4 года назад

      Yeah. The thickness of the digital Ms until the M10 is strange if you come from an analog M indeed. Fully agree that the M10 type body feels more natural. I also see your point with how it can be classified as the perfect beginners camera and I was struggling if I should go in that direction with this video. I have a followup planned talking about what you learn and how you learn photography when you shoot digital with a display where I will pick up on your point.

    Honestly, a camera for everybody doesn't exist. The M-D is not different on this point.
    As every old photographer I owned many cameras, of witch several Leica M and R. My way to photograph changed through the years, so did my gear. And I can say that, even if the most exciting camera I had was my first M6, I take better pictures currently with a much more simple, cheaper and versatile camera that I can use it in a manual, fully or semi-automatic way. But frankly speaking, this M-D is one of the most desirable camera to me, with the X100V.

    I've shot Leica for years, my main camera is a M240. What is the point of an M-D? Just switch the screen off when you don't want it! It would be crazy to spend hundreds of dollars setting up a shoot, working all day, and not being able to check your work. Congratulations to Leica for raiding their parts bin for a few month before releasing a new M and persuading people to pay for the old version, without a screen. They are marketing geniuses.
