  • Brennan shares his thoughts on probably the most unique digital camera ever made, the Leica M-D. Does not having a screen on a digital camera make sense? Is it worth the extra money over the M262? Watch to find out.

    I shoot film 98% of the time I shoot, which is nearly daily. THE main reason i shoot film over digital is to stay focused in the moment. No displays, no menus, no play backs, no nothing except focus, aperture, and shutter speed. The moment the photo is taken there is nothing more to do except be back in the moment. I LOVE taking a photo and having nothing more to do with the camera. Simplicity is where it's at for me. If I had the money I'd buy this camera. But for now I'll stick with My Pentax MX.

    Hi guys. I've been digging you channel. One thing about this video though, it feels more opinion piece than review. I always appreciate opinion in reviews but this seemed to lack some meat in terms of the actual product. I know Leica's (quality, heritage, M line) has been covered in many videos on and off RUclips but still. A more comprehensive product review would have been great.
    However, thanks for the time in making the video. Great to finally see something on the M-D on RUclips.

    This is a very interesting camera, I always tun off the back screen on my digital cameras, but sometimes I can't help but looking at the images after I capture them. I have one question though, how do you set the white balance on the Lica M D?

  • @AdamEronenPiper
    @AdamEronenPiper 8 лет назад +6

    This makes so much sense to me. I've shot film for a while now and this looks really appealing. You're not going to get the same characteristics as film but finding my own colour chemicals is getting more difficult. My M6 feels like it will last forever. Do you think this cameras digital performance still be relevant in 15-20 or more years? How long do you think the electronics will last in the M D by comparison to a mechanical film camera? I know only time will answer for sure but with no experience of the other digital leica cameras does the history of the other digital cameras provide any hints as to the expected life span of the M D?

    • @BrooklynShootersChannel
      @BrooklynShootersChannel  8 лет назад +2

      I think anything digital is going to degrade faster than anything that is mechanical or analog. That's why there are record players outlasting iPods haha. There are still more than M8s and M9s and they have been out for a very long time and aside from the M9 sensor issue they are going strong. I think this camera and other digital Ms from it's generation will still be around in 15 years. I'm sure their performance will be bested (it was already not the best when it was released) but just because a newer model comes out doesn't mean that the cameras that came before it are automatically bad.

    • @AdamEronenPiper

      Thanks for the reply. I worked at a University that had a lot of cameras exchanging hands and most of the broken cameras weren't anyones fault, electronics just failed sometimes. That being said, they can take a lot of punishment. Is there somewhere I can see your images from this camera?

    • @GearZenChannel

      Brooklyn Shooters Channel generally, electronics never "degrade". The mechanical parts wear, but not the circuits.

    @geraldlee7831 8 лет назад

    I like the idea of this camera, in fact this is Leica response to our requests. However, I am already shooting the MP240 the same way, without chimping, adjusting the settings. TBH, there's not much in the leica to adjust. It has always been just picking up the camera and roll.
    I used the screen only to format my card, and thats good.
    If it's priced similarly to the M240, I will it some thoughts. I want the camera, but I can spend less for an m262, and use it exactly the same way.
    There will be plenty folks who wants to buy this I am sure, as Leica users tends to be more romantic than practical.

    Welcome to the M-D owners and shooters club. I definitely concur this M is the closest to the film M7 experience available. One item you did not touch upon is how controllable and predictable the camera is. I've been achieving 98-99% correct exposures, and of course, all of my shots are in focus as well (wink). Because the camera seems to always get the shot, I could see a seasoned professional M shooter using it for a main-stream tool, not just for fun shooting. Perhaps we can start a survey, what does the "D" in M-D stand for? I would offer up "Deterministic". Enjoy.

    i think this camera has a market. I've never really been a fan of looking at unedited images on a tiny screen anyway, so the absence of one actually seems like it would be liberating. and since its digital, you can afford to shoot extra images to make sure you get something to work with. "leica's shouldn't be cheap, but they don't have to be that expensive either" i forgot who said that but they're absolutely right. id love to own one, but i cant afford the pride of ownership, and of course leica is going to charge that much because, well, they can.
    either way, looking forward to more.

  • @treacyphoto
    @treacyphoto 8 лет назад +1

    Think you're wrong on one point - there are many pros that will be all over this camera. This thing is all about simplicity and getting the image onto the card as quickly and unobtrusively as possible. So many pros, me included, don't chimp preferring instead to peruse the assignment take on a big studio screen with a good cup of coffee. Checking the camera screen simply slows the brain down and dulling picture making instincts. A good pro or accomplished enthusiast will instinctively know how to nail the exposure without having to check. Camera screens are surplus to requirements.

    You can put a tiny black tape on the Fuji X100T's eye sensor. That will turn the LCD display off until you remove the tape. You can also save thousands of dollars hehe.
    I'd love one of these, but can't afford one.

    • @bnf82
      @bnf82 8 лет назад +1

      You can also select "Only Viewfinder" in the view mode button... no tape needed :)

    • @OldCameras
      @OldCameras 8 лет назад +2

      ***** hehe. Yeah, but that's a digital solution. The tape is more, analog 😂

    • @bnf82
      @bnf82 8 лет назад

      True! :D
      Now, talking a bit more serious, I think all solutions are valid, but they're not the same as not having something like the LCD. It's definitely a game changer and something new to us.
      With all that said, it's still ridiculously expensive (imo) and definitely not an entry-level camera (or either an entry-level Leica, cause it's cheaper to buy a used one)

    i would love to buy this camera, if I had the money to do it. With that being said, I don't buy the argument "for the film shooter who just want to shoot with no hustle".
    The M-D records only raw files, so a photographer who wants to change his film M to this M-D because doesn't want to put up with the film annoyances anymore is just trading those with the annoyance to be in front of a screen for hours processing dng files.

    Hello, the M cameras have become really bulky and heavy compared to my M6 (which is already quite heavy). I can't stop dreaming about them though ;) The M262 is a bit lighter it seems but I don't want to risk a 10cm longer arm carrying it all day long. What about high ISO then?

    • @danieldittus5645
      @danieldittus5645 8 лет назад

      I have printed 8 megapixel files from a 350D relatively large back in 2009 .. that worked despite relatively shitty sigma lenses. So it should not be a problem with the Epson either, I understand. But honestly ... 6 Megapixel when working on a picture is an absolute pain ... The M8 is the lowest I would get ... now if they would do an affordable Epson RD2, with at least 16 megapixel FF, I sure would be tempted!

    • @BrennanMcKissick
      @BrennanMcKissick 8 лет назад

      I actually detest the M8 to be honest haha. That whole camera feels like they threw it together. The whole idea behind it when it actually came out with the whole "upgrade the internals down the line" but really didn't make sense and the sensor below 320 iso is pretty nice but after that it's really rough. Not to mention the special filters you had to have and that it's no longer repairable. You probably wouldn't like my take on it very much haha.

    I'm an M6 shooter and I have to say that the MD doesn't make sense. The "film experience" of not being able to see your results is missing the point. With negative film, you expose for the shadows and let the highlights fall where they may (or pull back your development). The rolloff on film is much smoother and acceptable than pure-white digital blow-out. In digital, it's the exact opposite, and to ensure that you don't blow your highlights, there is visual feedback on the screen. Not having that screen doesn't give you a "film experience", it cripples your ability to do digital properly.
    Anyway, patiently awaiting for your new material.

    I've owned two digital M's (M8 & M9P) both of which I've since sold with a vow never to own another. The quality and reliability just isn't there. I'll stick with my M7, which is at least built to last and considerably less chunky than the digital series. Plus I can't 'chimp'.

    • @BrooklynShootersChannel
      @BrooklynShootersChannel  8 лет назад

      Totally hear you on a few of those points. Digital isn't inherently made to last, so that's never going to match the film cameras. I've owned a m9 and can honestly say a lot of those quality issues you speak of were ironed out with the 240 series. It's a much more stable and better performing camera. M8/m9 just seem like they were made to fit the size sensors they had in a camera for the time. Everything else was secondary. Now that they got FF in there easily theyve really worked on the other stuff. The m240 made me all but abandon film for a while. It's great.

    Just don't chimp... but seriously, I get it. I think many of us do, but I think all this romantic idea of analogue in a digital age? I shoot film and enjoy it. Whilst I can see the benefits of this camera, digital photograph still involves a lot of sitting behind a computer to get your image to look like Tri-X. I say, just shoot Tri-X to begin with.

    "effectively you just shooting a film camera"
    This is so incorrect, from my point of view.
    Shooting film is way more that not having a screen...there is hundreds of reason why people use film cameras.
    "there is no difference between shooting this and a Leica M-A"
    There is hell lot of a differences between Digital M and Analog M's...the only thing they may have in common is the camera body and the M mount - and that's about it.
    I can see the attempt to do a casual review but we should be aware of the information we put out there....we growing a generation buying Leica just for the 'status' when is way more than that.

    • @danieldittus5645
      @danieldittus5645 8 лет назад

      well "there is no difference between shooting this and a Leica M-A" aside from not advancing the shutter manually, shooting really shouldn't be different. Now the backend is very different, that is true. It all depends on what you consider as part of shooting.
