  • In this video I talk about what is potentially my favorite camera of all time, the Leica M-D Typ 262. This is a camera that doesn't make an appearance on this channel all that often but is easily my most used camera when not making videos.
    There are a number of reasons I love this camera including the user experience, the limitations it forces me to work with, and its balance of size and image quality. I hope you enjoy the video and all of the sample photos I weaved in throughout!

    I agree with your comments. I am using a M10-D and I also enjoy the feel how I “created” the photos. Initially I wanted to purchase the MD, but Leica released the M10-D just 6 months later so I saved up more and bought the M10-D new.

      Yeah the M10-D is awesome. Someday I might make the upgrade to that too but I really don’t feel the need to at this point .. thanks for watching!

    I just recently sold my Leica m10 for an m10d. The best decision I’ve made. I absolutely love taking it everywhere I go and taking pictures of my family and our adventures.

    Love it. I just traded my used Leica M10d (no rear screen as well) to SL with summicron 35.

      @JasonWebberYT  4 года назад +1

      SL is a great camera. With Sigma now making L-Mount lenses it makes it much easier to get great lenses for that system (although you just can’t beat true Leica glass)

    #Always wear a camera# (Thorsten Overgaard) I do 90 % of my press photography with a Leica M240. The M262 is too slow for my workflow, but for photographers who are not in a hurry, the M262 is a great camera. Good look and keep on vloggin...

    I just saw your video about the Zeiss 50mm F2 that you use alongside this camera and I asked if you could explain the reasons that moved you to enter the Leica world. If only I would've waited to take a deeper look at your channel... :) Great video Jason! Keep sharing your process and your insights, take care!

    Jason, I like your style, man. Going off-road in your Toyota & 📸 with a Leica M-D. The joke from the Amazon jungle is: you like to take a Land Rover into the jungle, but take the Land Cruiser if you want to come out. 😂 ultimately, I chose the typ 262 over the M-D for the screen. I needed to see the shadings of my images before making my final image & being able to see the images makes it easier. Really, either version will provide a slower, tactile photographic experience for the sake of photography. Thank you for a enjoyable video. ✌🏼& 📸

    Can not afford the Leica, however just picked up the Fuji x100f to have a similar experience... when you were shooting with Fuji, any experience with Fuji x100?

    • @JasonWebberYT
      @JasonWebberYT  4 года назад +1

      Yes! The X100 was my go-to to get a similar feel to this. I personally much prefer the 50mm focal length, though. So that always bugged me about the X100. I’ve actually never had the X100F, though. I always shot on the original X100. I hope you’re enjoying it!

    great camera, I wanted that many times, and almost pulled the trigger to get a used one but its was kind of beaten up so cancelled the deal, decided on the silver M10-P than freaking 2 weeks later, the M10-D comes out :(, want that but already bought the M10-P from eBay, no returns! I later got the M edition 60 lightly used and very minty from a leica store for a good price and am loving it, the idea was to keep the beautiful 35mm lux and sell the body to recover half the cost but I reluctantly used it at a wedding reception party and I was loving how it felt with no screen, made me more free, fearful and bold at the same time, bring on the limitations and see how powerful the human mind is at cracking them all! We give too less of a credit to this machine that is the human body! I am keeping my M60 kit! Its just too beautiful and works just fine. It does not have exposer compensation like the M-D typ 262 but I am fine with it. I did pick up the M10-D at my local leica store to feel and man that thing with the thumb grip feels so natural and secure in the hands. Once I saw the M-D 262 or should I say the M60 as it was the pioneer, a lightbulb just went on over my head, a camera without a screen is so so beautiful looking! especially a rangefinder like a leica. I was loving the idea. How the hell the photographers back in the days did it with film and no preview?? please rediscover the pleasure of photography without the automation and aid of technology, it certainly takes that human touch and interaction with the art of photography and of course your equipment matters and you should love it! and love using it.
    GREAT VID JASON, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

      Ronit, we just did it cuz we had no choice. I shot weddings and portraits from 1990-2000 with medium format film systems. Manual focus, manual exposure, manual flash. When men were men! 😀 Bought a Nikon D1 in 2000 and switched to digital for the next 10 years.

    • @ronitsingh85
      @ronitsingh85 3 года назад +1

      @@jklphoto Indeed, that's all we had right? ha ha ha, yeah it was sink or swim for sure. My first camera was minolta 7 rangefinder, this was in 1998 or so, my uncle gave it to me to use and keep, Never used a manual camera before, let alone a RANGEFINDER! SLR would have been more friendly, but my dad took me and the camera to a local photo studio in Fiji and the photographer showed me how to focus and what speeds to shoot at, I can't believe how good an image the camera would take, I think it had a f1.8 40mm fixed lens on it. after that I got into SLRs and in 2010 switched to digital, love digital cause how easy it is and you get that instant review either on the camera or at home, no waiting, no wasting $$ and no clutter of pictures. Had the digital but no soul in the modern photography equipment, then I started using older lenses on my DSLR, adapted them, that forced me to drop the DSLR altogether and try finding a digital body that was mirrorless and that looked retro, I knew about leica but man it was like taboo because of the price. eventually I had no choice but to get one, LOVING IT! Mind you I only invested in a canon EOS-M first gen body and that's it before getting a leica T and an M later. For sure nothing gets the blood boiling like using an all out manual system that has your back when you need it because it is so well engineered.

    Awesome review man and fantastic photos. This camera has always intrigued me as being an owner of an M4 but having very little time or patience to develop film. I love my Fuji X100V & XPro-3 however if I had the money and could find one I would certainly pull the trigger on on of these. I subscribed and followed you on Instagram. Keep up the good work, 👍

    Are you still using the M-D. I have acquired one and find the DNG files from the M-D are not as universal as other more common digital Leica. I am looking for edit programs that work or can convert the files. I would love to use the Leica iOS program on my iPad Pro but it does not use the M-D files. Any tips?

      @@JasonWebberYT Man... idk... the plan was to sell the M-D after getting the M10-D, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I have had some of my favorite photo moments with the M-D. And it's definitely a lot more... raw when compared to the M10-D. I have the EVF with the M10-D, I can connect via wifi if needed... for some reason, it doesn't feel as "simple" as the M-D. Probably because the wifi and EVF, but it also has auto ISO. I do love how thin the M10-D is. And the built in thumbrest is awesome. If I put on the 28mm summaron reissue, I can literally put it all in the back pocket of some Levi's. It makes my Leica a pocket camera! But there's something about the M-D.... something that can't be listed off on a specs sheet. Something about coming home, seeing that all your photos are messed up because you used Exp. Comp. on 1 photo at the beginning of your shoot but forgot...So now all of them ended up over/under exposed.... but then learning a good lesson.... something about the extra time you put into "seeing" the photo before you push the shutter button.... Having to select the ISO while other photographers ask what ISO is.... I've had some of my most frustrating moments while shooting my M-D. But that's why it feels so amazing when you get a shot you love. And that's why you get soooo much anticipation as you're out and about shooting. The M10-D has that experience too, just not as much. Which is too bad. But if I could have only one... it'd probably be the M-D. It was my first Leica. I shot soooo many photos on that camera that it desperately needs a CLA... it has more of that manual experience I love. It's less than half the price of a new M10-D (although, you can find M9's with a bad sensor for around $700, then do the Leica "upgrade" for an M10-D which will cost you $6000, which means you're 'only' paying $6700 for an M10-D, that's what I did, plus I traded in some stuff I wasn't really using so I paid about $4k out of pocket). But idk... I've only had the M10-D a few months and it's been all COVID time. So I've only shot a couple thousand pics on it. Maybe I need to dust off the M-D and do a side by side.
