THE BR420 IS IN IMO THE BEST GAS BLOWER ON PLANET EARTH HOWEVER THEY WILL REQUIRE MINOR SERVICE FROM TIME TO TIME....WATCH AS THE MM1 TEARS THIS ONE DOWN TO THE LAST SCREW AND REASEALS HER AND GETS HER RUNNING FOR ONE MORE SEASON
I was looking for a lightweight blower for my deck. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxgioZQl3J5wPGAeDINzbieKbT5qomSEx3 There are some huge trees around my house and the leaves and pods drop all over my deck. Having to move furniture around to sweep has become too big a chore. This blower was the answer. It is light enough for this 70yr old lady and powerful enough to blow all the tree droppings off my rather large deck. Thank you B&D. Be aware the cord is not included. I use a 3 prong outdoor cord 25' cord for my 12' x 20' deck. The cord retainer works very well, but don't try to pass the plug through it. That is NOT how it works. You just have to loop the cord and it works great. One of my best purchases. Very happy.
Jeremy I can't thank you enough for that video. I have been a professional automotive mechanice for 45 years and first I have to praise you on your thoroughness of testing first. You diagnosed the problem and then resealed the entire crankcase for us. Nice job and again great skills. I'm retired from the automotive business now but have a fully equipted small engine shop and do this kind of repair. While I have done many kinds of repairs I haven't parted the case on one of these yet. But if need be with your instruction I would not hesitate to get the job done. Again thank you my friend for taking your time to deal with the camera and get this on film for everyone to see.
Best Regards,Lisa
Hey MowerMedic1, love you video. I have a BR340 that is just a few steps down from the 420 you worked on. Now I know how to disassemble the whole thing from your video. I prefer your videos in 1 part instead of two or three. It doesn't matter if it is an hour long. When I have a need to repair my equipment I am going to watch what I need to watch to get the job done. So don't worry that your video's may be to long in one part. Those that need to watch are going to watch. Thanks again. I wish you would have showed how you squeeze the ring and get the piston back in the cylinder. Thanks again for a great video.
Thank you so much!
I'm having the same problem with it.
We have the br 420 here. In Brazil Stihl didn't stop making them. They are really great machines.
I personally like the "Full Feature" videos over shorts. Thanks for your efforts.
I have to complement you on this video, I havnt got your range of equipment but came to the same conclusion with my BR420 and this video inspired me to give it a go. Stripped it down, installed new gaskets and new piston and rings (one was broken) and put it back together, new fuel and spark plug and gave the carb a complete overall. Crossed my fingers and nothing! Then remebered the start switch and hey presto it burst into life. The cost of the parts probably made this exercise too expensive in the U.K. but very satisfying none the less. Thx.
I got one for you. I own a STIHL BR380 blower. Even though it’s 11 years old the hours are low. I only use non ethanol gas and synthetic oil. Last week after full throttle use of about 30 minutes it lost power (rpm’s dropped). I took off the cruise control and it idles fine. Shut it off and it starts fine but will not rev up to high rpm. Once cold I start it up and it does the same thing. Only difference is it only takes 2 minutes to act up now. I have done the following. Cleaned the spark arrestor, replaced the spark plug, air filter, fuel filter, carburetor (OEM), ignition coil, and fuel lines. Compression is 127 (checked it right after it lost RPM). I also removed the filler cap thinking the vent was clogged. No change. I also removed the muffler to check the exhaust port for carbon buildup, none. Spark plug tip looks normal. I was leaning towards an air leak somewhere. Once RPM’s dropped I sprayed starter fluid into the intake and it still didn’t accelerate. It has me buffaloed. Any thoughts? I know I can buy a new one but the new ones like this are 2.5 lbs heavier and I’m like you, I want to find the problem. Sure would appreciate some help!
excellent video I feel the same way about my 420 Magnum one of the best blowers ever made and I'm getting ready to have to rebuild mine too.
Thank you for such a great in depth video! I helped me save my Br 340 blower. It was the crank shaft key that was sheared off. Thanks again!!
Very comprehensive job - you clearly know what you are doing. I had cleaned up my BR 420 because my son was complaining he could never get it started. Really nothing wrong with it but it did need the plug properly gapped (.5mm pg. 31 of the manual), but in removing the carburetor to clean it, the throttle cable became disconnected and I was finding it nearly impossible to get it reconnected - and here is where I was hoping you would show that when you were putting everything back together. Got some ideas of what I need to do so back to the drawing board for me. Would never try the tear down myself without your video - great job (except the abbreviated process of putting it back together. )
Great video. Thanks for being so patient! I really enjoy your videos that show all the work it takes to make machines come alive again!
Enjoyed watching you work, you have good hands and temperament. Great video, Thanks
Yes please keep making long step by step videos. New fan
Love this incredibly detailed video...thank you! After watching it I decided not to replace the crank seal (too much for me) and just did the rest of them while replacing the carb. It also gave me a chance to do a deep clean on everything (I used brake cleaner on the piston?). I could not have done it without this video, so thank you, very much.
I just bought one of these used at a pawn shop. Thanks for letting us know what you think about this tool, and how to tear it down. Fine camera work and great narrative. Keep it up. now I want to see a video on the carb.
Full feature contains a lot of excellent info on many different items in one video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for your explanation how to repair the leak I love to see it again
Simply EXCELLENT !!! Thank You !
Thank you greatly for this moolah saving 411 !
I have an older redmax blower i would like to do this to but they have the 2 piece crankshafts and I don't have the tool to get the crank shaft apart to replace the bearings in the case. Great job Buddy!!
Best fkn video Ive ever seen on Stihl blowers. Subscribed. Thanks!
I feel like a lot of ppl
Are scared of 2 strokes. Not many vids
About the br420 on the
Interwebs
Stellar...as usual. I like both long and short vids. I'm too clumsy to use a socket, so I use the seal drivers.
Great video, yep 5 years later even. I just picked up 2 of these blowers from a municipality auction. Nothing in this entire process looks out of reach from my mechanical abilities. (I think I'll pass through on the $$$$ pressure test tool. :)
Great video! Refreshing to have the full-length video instead of part 1 & part 2.
Muy bien muchas gracias este video me sirve mucho.
thank you sir for the information I learn so much from your videos I love to work on small engines thanks so much
.
Great vid man! Thanks for the post! I just got a used BR420 with a leak somewhere and fuel in the air filter. I will get it figured out shortly. Your vid will be a great help for teardown and testing.
wow what a great video fantastic thank you Jerermy great helped me out big time
Great video! Thanks for all the detailed info! This is really helpful.
Good job on disassembled and assembled , seals and gaskets etc,
Great Job ! ! ! Good work flow , easy to listen and follow along.
!
I own the same one, nice vid
Is from Sweden, my br500, 4 stroke, I've taken it down completely and cleaned of soot completely, everything is cleared, gaskets should all be replaced. What should I think more! Tanning, millimeters setting! Help and big thanks.
Your video was made all of us more!
Thanks Bengt
Man that was a great step by step instruction. I have one of these models that my neighbor gave to me. The only thing that I had to do was change the carburetor. Now I have noticed that my air filter has been soaking up the fuel. I have no idea how long this was going on. Normally when it doesn't start I will pull the plug and let the cylinder dry out. But now i have pressure remaining in the tank. I read online that the gas cap is not venting???? Since they stopped making this model, how can I get a replacement cap and a new air filter???
Check on eBay or amazon and you should be able to find a new cap
Many Thanks great detailed video!. I have a BR430 which is leaking air/oil in the cover. Starts, OK then warms up and starts dropping power. Suspect its possibly seal between block and crank. Not 100% sure But I don't have a compression tester - anyway to find leak without this ?
Got 2 br 400. One I think needs just the carb and crank assembly. The other needs a carb and crank case. Is it worth the time and part to repare. The first one just want to make sure I get good part the second would be a good donation after repare?
Bought a mess up 420 ,found the carburetor screw's trip ,engine block has to re tapped ,got an old engine, but piston stuck, can't get it open, still working on this project,,
Excellent video. I now know where my leaking is coming from on my 30 year old 420. It was made so well, but mine has been beat to heck but still runs great. Don't know if I want to go to the trouble of a complete tear down since the rest of the machine is pretty worn out but at least I know what to expect if I do.
Tack gubben du är bäst!
You rock, thanks for the kind words
Hi. How much do you think is a fair price for a job like this ? Mine is a same model (great work horse) and I live in Atlanta . Don't know where you are or else I take it to you.
2hrs labor plus parts so 180$ roughly
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 Allrigth. Not bad. Hey great video on that 420 I love you took everything apart no editing BS. Thanks .
Outstanding!! I have a BR 380 and I assume the process is the same. I like the full video format.
Great video 👍👍
*My br600 and br430 are both leaking oil around the bottom engine pan and niether will run properly. What do you charge for an engine reseal on these blowers or what should I expect to pay for this job? I've heard it consists of removing the engine from the blower to be able to remove the engine pan and re seal it with gasket maker and replace the crankshaft seals. Thanks in advance.*
120 plus parts
I can't thank you enough also.....I found a br 420c on the side of the road.......new air filter, new gas, plug, fired right up.. however I'm ordering a complete cylinder ,piston, carb kit, seals.....bad score in cylinder. It won't idle long, do you think it's bleeding down compression from the cylinder or seals and base gasket.? It looks all oily just like yours...however top speed it will run for hours. Where do you get your parts? Tons of hours on this unit, I'd like to do a full rebuild including crank, any good parts places online? Anyways I loved the video, now I know all the tools I need. Thanx again my friend
Feel free to click on that heart under the video! Thanks for watching!
Quality video! Thanks
Great Video. Thanks Jeremy
Full videos nice job
Would this be the same operation for the 420C?
Thank you for this video. Very helpful although I do need to replace my bearings.
Nice video jeremy. I like the long videos. I asked you before I think. But can you find the spacer part numbers you use for leakage testing. The ones you put on carb screws. I have everything else. Can't find echo part numbers for these.
Great video. The golf course I work at has one the same with no spark at the spark plug. What would be the probable causes? Thanks.
Brilliant video thank you very much, what was the total repair cost .
love the tool, parts links.i could have used that when you did seat replacement video on briggs carb.had to look all over to find that Suzuki seat driver you used.finnally found one and have used it half a dozen times already.wish I coiuld have bought through you, since you turned me on to it.have a nice weekend
Jeremy, have you heard about STIHL and others chainsaws used in Forestry Dept have been splashing fuel back into users faces due to build upon pressure in fuel tank, someone came up with a different cap and a refueling system similar to Indy Cars.
Interesting.
Loved the Break Down and Rebuild video... i own an old BR420 C Magnum.. I bought used.. i am having a problem with the throttle Cable assembly .. I can't get Full Power from Trigger.. I think the previous owners had either removed a piece or lost it/broke... that holds the cable to the carb.... the cable seems to float freely there... Nothing holding it in place... Would you happen to have and diagrams or parts catalogs for the carb/Cable connections??
Keep the Videos coming.. Loving and Learning a Whole Lot!! Thanks!!
What size socket do I need to use to remove the spark plug for a stilh br 340 backpack blower.?
I notice that crankcase half gasket was sticking above the cylinder base. Is that a possible leak spot because the bottom cylinder gasket has a hard time being flush with the crankcase base. What do you think?
you have to trim the excess off with a knife
Great video! I just picked one of these up. It runs great but I now have oil stains on the back of my shirt and pants. The wife is not happy! This looks like the solution to my problem. Where is the best place to get parts? Is there a kit with the seals and gaskets? Thanks again
My Stihl BR 430 blower has developed a engine knock. Very noticeable at low RPMs. Is the problem most likely a crank shaft bearing/seal?
I have a sthil 420 magnum blower and it stop working took it apart n found mix gas down in the crankcase does that mean the rings are bad or is it something else
I was wondering if you could do a video for repairing a stuck needle valve on a stihl blower. It is stuck open, and keeps my plug wet with fuel.
Hello I own a br600 mag blower wondering if you had a video for adjusting the valves on this bad boy ??? great videos btw
Good job
excellent !!!I have the br600, do you have any videos on valve adjustment. thank you asvance
I baught the BR600 magnum about 3 years back. Any problems you know of I should lookout for? I have about 100 hours on it so far, so it hasn't really been used too much but it's been a fantastic machine. I run nothing but 50:1 with 89 octane.
a 4 stroke that runs on mixed gas? wtf are you talking about...
I stated in the video twice to be sure and check the bearings
thank you i rather the long section step by step as a beginner trying to repair my own .only one thing when you are replacing the parts back keep it step by step though it was great
Would a Stihl BR320 teardown be the same procedure as this? Have a 320 that is very hard starting, thinking it's stuck rings, carb is new OEM. Thoughts? Great video & helpful!
Yup only difference is bore size
Great vid
I wanted to ask are there two intake manifold gaskets or one when I took apart my machine it had two manifold gaskets one on the cylinder between the heat shield and one on the opposite side of the heat shield my question is how many does it require and where does it go

What’s the truck to compressing the rings to get the jug over the piston?
Hi Jeremy,
Great video! I'm looking at doing a tear down and rebuild of an old Stihl BR420. When my dad gave it to me, he said the unit will run for a bit and they die a short time after being on full throttle. So far I have replaced the air and fuel filters, rebult the carb, new spark plug and cleaned the spark arrestor screen. I had my local small engnie mechanic run a pressure test and ensure the carb was properly adjusted. My last effort is to replace all seals and gaskets. I hope that will solve the issue.
Thanks again for video! Also, any advise or recommendations would be appreciated!
Did you end up adjusting the gap between the ignition coil and the flywheel? I have the same problem and I have heard that this should fix it. The gap is equivalent to a business card
What is the PSI
hello . Does the br400 have a fuel pickup/filter?If so how do u change it. Soon as I open the cap there is a plastic wall. I can't even see the fuel hose.
I really enjoyed that jeremy :-), anyone that wants to do there own engine has a hell of a better chance of success now :-)
I love full videos but its your time and trouble, you are the boss... well next to your wife ha ha :-) :-)
Yep i understand that absolute perfection isnt possible, so a very tiny leak over 10 mins is well within normal.
Im supprised the engine didnt overheat with the air leaks into the transfer ports.
Great video
i just bough a use one. today o wanted to try it out and couldn't get it to start. do you have any clue what can it be or what should I Do? I did empty the gas tank and will be adding new gas 50:1
I have a Sthil BR400 backpack blower, I removed the pull starter, what size nut holds the starter assembly on the piston point?
nice like the full length...
HELLO mowermedic i got a 420 sthill back pack blower how i can replace the ignition coil??
Great video! Thanks!!
I just did this job but I changed the crank and bearings and apparently I screwed up the front crank bearing housing and after about 4 uses it blew out the front seal and would not crank so if you change the bearings DON’T KNOCK THE FRONT BEARING into the block housing to far it bends the lock clip and runs the block from experience luckily I have a used one coming and redoing my mistake
my friend,i like your videos, and I like to ask if you can explain the functioning of a little valve incrusted on the fuel tank of the 600 magnum blower and also if you can explain the assembling of the intake and exaust valves on the same machine, specialy the balancing mechanism ,that looks like little fingers and moves with the push rods, I have one on wich I like to put my hands on it,tks a lot
Which fan blade use in this plz tell me....and also give me some information about best air flow cause fan blades
thankyou for the video that was realy help ful
hello my br430 is with the ignition cord tripid a lot what should be
really good job man. thank you. god bless
Enjoyed this video. Thoughts on the 450 (not electric start)?
very good video thanks
Jeremy I want to ask you a question. I purchased my in law's cottage and it came with a BR420 Magnum blower. The blower only has about 4 hours on it. The unit has sat in a dry exterior storage shed but the weather has been extreme for temperatures as it is in northern Ontario Canada (in the 90's in the summer and down to around -15 in winter). It was sitting in the shed for two years untouched. I took it out of the shed and the fuel tank was over half full. I went to pull it over and it just stopped/stuck. I figured it had seized. I pulled the plug and it was full to the brim of fuel so it had hydraliced. I found I broke the shear key on the crank. My question to you is would you think I bent the rod possibly as well? I really do not want to pull the bottom end apart. I did loosen the head bolts and drained out the fuel from the crank case as well. I have fiddled with engines for years but this is the first time I have had a motor draw fuel from temperature changes. You see that before too? Really interested to hear your thoughts on the rod. Thanks
Great video it's sad how so many pepole will toss it in the trash or give it away or sell it very cheap and all it needs is a little of your time and now how and it will be like new again am one of the guys like u fix it and ur good too go only if u new how many good things I get from pepole not noing how to fix it or I'll buy something cheap and I'll tear it down clean every part and new seals and your good too go sometime u will run into something that can't be fix but what I'll do is tear it down and save the good parts and toss the no good stuff and I'll say this more then a hand full of times I used a part that I saved from something that hand no use anymore . Evertime I save parts I write what it's for what it came off put it in a baggy with some tape on the bag and write on the tape and I'll put it with all the other parts pluss I always clean the parts but ya I love to fix something that would off gone in the trash pluss u save a lot of money and u make money if u sell it now this is what u call very GREEN something that not to many pepole will know !!
yes sir where do you buy your aviation gasket sealant at thanks for any information also great video
I have one and I love it! I have the exact same problem. Can you tell me the part number for the crank case gasket?? Great video by the way!!
The BR 420 Magnum, that is..
Thanks for taking the time for showing us this, just a question, where do u get the parts.
I just subscribed to your channel, thanks for the lengthy video, lol, just kidding...Very helpful, although Its my fuel that's leaking underneath the gas tank.. I guess I will need to pull it apart first and see where the leak is I will let you know how it turns out..
hey i like you video and i learn something diferent today and you work on the 600 if so please can you make a video on that thanks
well done.....solid job.
love the video mate but i think i would have changed the bearings would hate to have to pull it apart again
Just bought a Stihl Br450C backpack blower with electric start. I hope it last as well as yours.
Totally different machine. Be sure to make the dealer honor your 2 year warranty.
how do you like it?
kakarot i fix them on the daily its very easy IMHO
I have problem with my Br 420 I put New Carburator and it still geting Fold Of Gasoline
Hey dude great vid . I wanted to know on the br400 ignition coil do you need a filler gauge
Never did answer my question?!
hey great vid ..I have a br 400 ..hard to start and once I have it started it will run for a little bit then stop ..I did a rebuilt on the carb and new plug.? what do you think..thanks
First things first is to do a vacuum and pressure test
