    Kurtis Blow Info 📰:
Kurtis Walker aka Kurtis Blow was born on August 9, 1959 in Harlem, New York. Kurtis Blow is the first commercially successful rapper and the first to sign with a major record label- Mercury Records. Kurtis Blow's song: "The Breaks", a single from his 1980 debut album: Kurtis Blow, is the first certified gold record rap song. Kurtis Blow got his first practice as a DJ in grade school, mingling with guests at his mother's parties to take their music requests. By the time he was 13, he had a fake ID and was sneaking into New York City clubs to hear DJs spin their tracks.
In 1975, Kurtis Blow enrolled in Harlem's High School of Music and Art, but was kicked out for selling marijuana. He transferred to another high school, where he was soon caught selling the psychedelic drug PCP. Recognizing Kurtis Blow's intelligence, the dean gave Kurtis Blow the chance to test for his General Equivalency Degree as an alternative to expulsion. Kurtis Blow passed his GED exam, and went on to study at New York's City College (CCNY).
While still a high school student, Kurtis Blow had begun spinning his own tracks under the name Kool DJ Kurt. By the end of the 1970s, like many other New York DJs, he had become disenchanted with the boring sameness of the music coming out of the clubs. "Everything merged into one colorless sea of sound", he recalled. "We, the deejays, had to do something to make our shows a little bit different ... a little unique". That unique new thing was rap. Blow started mixing his own rhymes with the beats on his turntable. "Pretty soon rap became an accepted thing, almost expected in fact", Kurtis Blow said, "and those clubs who had rappin' deejays started to pick up".
In 1979, at the age of twenty, Kurtis Blow became the first rapper to be signed by a major record label, Mercury Records, which released his debut song: Christmas Rappin'. It sold over 400,000 copies, becoming one of the first commercially successful hip hop singles. Its follow-up single: "The Breaks", sold over half a million copies. He released ten albums over the next eleven years. His first album was: Kurtis Blow (1980), while his second was the top 40 pop album: Deuce (1981). Kurtis Blow's album: Party Time (1982), featured a fusion of rap and go-go. His 1984 album: Ego Trip, included the hits singles: "8 Million Stories", "AJ Scratch" and "Basketball". His 1985 album: America, garnered praise for its title track's music video. From this album his classic song: "If I Ruled The World", became a top 5 hit on Billboard's R&B chart as well as appearing on the movie soundtrack for the 1985 film: Krush Groove, in which he performed the song in a scene from the movie.
By 1983, he had moved into music production as well. Besides his own musical work, Kurtis Blow has been responsible for hits by artists including: The Fat Boys and Run DMC. Run, from Run-DMC, began his career as Kurtis Blow's DJ billed as: 'The Son Of Kurtis Blow. Lovebug Starski, Full Force, Rob Base, Kool And The Gang, Nia Peebles, Trouble Funk, Oran "Juice" Jones, Warren G, De La Soul, The Lost Boyz and Wyclef Jean all have been produced by and/or collaborated with Kurtis Blow. Former Mercury Records labelmates René & Angela had their R&B chart topping debut song: "Save Your Love (For #1)", gift rapped by Kurtis Blow. It was one of the very first songs from a R&B artist to feature a rapper on it.
Kurtis Blow produced, with Phillip Jones as co-producer and Dexter Scott King as executive producer, the 1986 song: "King Holiday", celebrating the first Martin Luther King Jr Day, as a US federal holiday inaugurated in January 1986. The song featured many artists including: Whitney Houston, New Edition, James "JT" Taylor, Stacy Lattisaw, Menudo, El DeBarge, Run-DMC, Whodini, The Fat Boys, Melle Mel, Stephanie Mills, Teena Marie, Lisa Lisa and Full Force.
Kurtis Blow performed as an actor and in music coordination in several feature films including Leon Kennedy’s 1986 movie: Knights Of The City, and the 1985 hip hop film: Krush Groove. He was host and co-producer for the movie: Das Leben Amerikanischer Gangs (1995), an international film production focusing on the West Coast gang scene. As host and associate producer for Miramax's 1997 Hip-Hop documentary: Rhyme And Reason, he gave an informative account of the status of Hip-Hop. He also participated in the three volume record release: The History Of Rap, for Rhino Records in 1998. As well as, Kurtis Blow co-produced the 2005 documentary: "Slippin, Ten Years With The Bloods", and won praises from Showtime for being the most viewed documentary in 2006. Kurtis Blow was recently a producer for the 2016 Netflix show: "The Get Down".
Kurtis Blow has spoken out emphatically against racism. He was an active participant in the 1984 Artists United Against Apartheid record: "Sun City". He worked with Reverend Jesse Jackson's "Operation Push and National Rainbow Coalition" in Chicago and with Reverend Al Sharpton's "Action Network" in New York City. In 1995, he started working on-air in radio at Power 106, the #1 CHR radio station in Southern California. He hosted "The Old School Show" on Sunday nights, featuring Hip-Hop hits from the past. He also worked for Sirius Satellite Radio on the "Classic Old School Hip-Hop" station Backspin (Channel 46) from 2000-2004.
Beginning in 1996, Kurtis Blow was featured in a Hip-Hop display at the "Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame". In the same year, rapper Nas debuted at #53 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his version of Blow's 1985 song: "If I Ruled The World". The song went on to double platinum. In 1998, the group Next released the song: "Too Close", in which the music of his song: "Christmas Rappin'", was sampled. ASCAP honored Kurtis Blow and Next at a gala affair on May 26, 1999 for having the number one song for 8 months. In 2002, he traveled to the Middle East to tour the Armed Forces bases performing seventeen shows for the troops.
In December 2014, Kurtis Blow was the Guest MC for the world premiere of "The Hip Hop Nutcracker" at New Jersey Performing Arts Center, a well received update of Tchaikovsky's holiday classic. A national tour of the show was scheduled to launch in November 2015 with Kurtis Blow reprising his role as Guest MC opening the show. The show has presently been up and running with 50-60 sold-out performances during the holidays.
In 2016, Kurtis Blow was unanimously elected as "Chairman of the Universal Hip Hop Museum". The museum is slated to open in 2023 in the Bronx point section of NYC.
In 2017, Kurtis Blow formed "The B-Boy Committee", a group of 1st generation BBoys/BGirls, who created the style of dance called B-boying, Rocking, and Break Dancing. The committee is dedicated to the facilitation of the B-Boy section of the Universal Hip Hop Museum.
Kurtis Blow became an ordained minister on August 16, 2009. As the founder of the Hip Hop Church in Harlem, Kurtis Blow serves as rapper, DJ, worship leader and minister.
In 2016, Kurtis Blow appeared in a documentary on the evolution of hip hop: Hip-Hop Evolution. The series was produced by Russell Peters, Scot McFadyen, Sam Dunn and Nelson George. It won the 2016 Peabody Award, and the 2017 International Emmy Award for Best Arts Programming.
