What these videos have taught me is that remembering to put love first is the best way to raise your children. I just had my first baby, and im so excited to be a mom! Its important for me to remember that my baby is exactly his own person, unique and individual with wants, needs, and desires, but no skills or experience on earth whatsoever. So its my job to love and show him how to handle his emotions and help him make his way through the world, but also without being a push over and letting him tell me what to do, i still need to be a bit bossy, just with lots of love and understanding that being bossed around isnt fun. Hard to find the right words for the point im trying to make, but this is a great video!
Keeping your kid close to you physically at all times unless they themselves choose to leave your side also helps. This is the natural way for people and still in our biology. We do that with our son and he doesn’t have proper tantrums.
My son is starting daycare. And has been with me for the last twenty months, with little separation. Now I'm not there for about eight hours a day. Plus, he got sick and had to stay out of school for the last two days. So, he's now all out of sorts and miserable. At one point he had become so upset we were worried his illness was getting worse so we rushed to the ER. Nope. Just over tired frustrated kid. The next day was more tantrums. And we were getting worn out. I'm so happy this video came up. It's helped me reframe what's going on and given me a check list to help him get back to the happy content kid he was before this week.

i appreciated this video. im a new grandma and needed a refresher. frankly this was exactly how i raised my kids and it was rewarding to see my method validated even after all these years. i was always considered rigid be because i was very consistent even until today i get poked at by those same family members. believe me i would rather have let my kids do what they wanted all the time and not be the mommy police but that is what parenting is …work.

In my experience the situation that is likely to create a tantrum is one you didn't mention. That is being in a store and they see something they must have. You may give in once, but you can't every time. This is what creates the public tantrum every parent dreads.

Can you do a video about how to help toddlers transition when they have a new younger sibling? Our little one has almost undergone a personality shift since the birth of the baby. Maybe personality shift is an extreme way to put it, but little activities like just reading a book with me doesn't interest my little one anymore like before and it's a bit sad to me. Also ... A LOT of tantrums happening. They are getting better gradually, but still ... A LOT!

This is wonderful! Thank you for reinforcing. As an early childhood music educator and mom, I have seen how important it is to have these resources at the fingertips to save the drama! Knowing and understanding how Toddlers can and can't communicate is so important. My 13m old had been screaming at a high sustained pitch for a while whenever he saw me in the kitchen preparing food. I would tell him I know he is hungry but you have to hold on food will be ready. Then I told him no screaming (I screamed like him) but you can do this instead (I cried in my chest voice) and believe it or not within days of being consistent, he started his chest voice crying instead of that piercing sound! I would also put him to do something like his musical toys that would be more distracting to him than looking at me until I am ready. I keep telling my husband stop telling him don't touch his glasses and allow him one day to explore it with him and explain what they are for and if he goes for it again keep doing the same and it would take some of the curiosity and excitement away. So much brain development is taking place by 18 months, we have to understand they will always want to discover new things and are learning to regulate their emotions by how we respond to them.

Likes to fall and bang the head? Or its not coordinated/its allways distracted/or other reason why they fall? If he really likes to fall i would suggest bring him to a place for him to fall for fun, like a trampoline park if they have an appropriate age section for him or some play area with cushions bouncing castle

I read a book that talks exactly about it. It is call simplicity parenting. You might want to have 6-10 at a time, build a toy library and rotate them very 2 weeks.
Emma I love your videos! My son is 22 months and he communicates so well! He tell me what he wants and I try to give him other options but he gets so mad if it isn’t what he is asking for. He will bang his head on the floor and bruise himself. I try to distract him but he has a really hard time switching from the reactive side of his brain to the other. HELP ME! I mean , he definitely has this amazing habit of throwing things in dustbins and not here and there, he just wants to keep throwing tissues, even food sometimes in it and then my “No” comes out ! It seems they get obsessed with somethings that they have learnt initially and keep doing that only! He loves dustbins 😂😂

Hi Emma, very helpful. What do you do when they choose the orange, you peel it, and then they 'change their minds' and want to have the apple and tantrum again? Do you then always have to give in or set boundaries and wear it out?

I feel validated! I figured out tips 1 and 2 early and can confirm this works. Keeping a routine is difficult. Hiding toys is a must, and not accidentally singing the paw patrol theme (or something similar)😂
My 11th month old arches her back bad and throws a fit at night when it's time for bed and she is super tired but fights it and screams herself back awake. Any advice for how to help that?
Your little one might be overtired and fighting sleep so you could try moving her bedtime forward. Using a bedtime routine (if you don’t already have one) might also help.
Wow thanks a lot! I let my little one do what she want, within a limit of course. I definitely forgot about number 2 but otherwise i did remember the other ones before i got my little one! Hehe its a whole psychological game all the time. Its very important to let them do what they want to do without saying no. They get bored easily if they see you not interested in them playing with the wrong things. Of course, keep them out sight in the first place hehe. I don’t have the big issues with my baby but she definitely let me know what she want and when she want it!!! I always offer alternative if she start crying when i take away something from her and she shut her crying fast. Again, especially tired babies just love making a big drama!

That's how it was with me.. Then at 20 months I started seeing how she would get angry so much and wanted to do what she wants... At 24 Months now I have lost her 😂🙈she screams at everything now 🙈🙄 whether shoes, or going home.. I can say whatever I want or prepare her but she is very stubborn 🙈

My baby is 9 months old and she's definitely starting to have tantrums. I find it really hard because she's so little, her language skills aren't developed. The other day she had a tantrum because she was struggling to pick up pomegranate seeds with her slippery hands, but she wouldn't let me clean her hands or help to put it in her mouth 😂 fun times 😅
It can be really hard! It is so difficult when their fine motor skills are still developing and they don’t yet have words to express their frustration.
These are all great tips however these days I have a difficult time with my 17 month old when i do diaper changes. He’ll often scream and cry as if he’s afraid. Not sure really how to avoid those.
My 19months old has figured out how to make himself vomit by putting both his hands in his mouth. He has been doing this for the last month. He does it mostly when he is upset, wants attention and not getting his way. It is so heartbreaking to watch specially when he vomits his entire milk bottle or lunch. He even does it in his car seat whilst am driving. When I Try to stop him by holding his hands down he tries to fight me and would only give up when he gets my full attention(picking him Up for example). How do I stop this behaviour?
I have a 22 month old with maybe 8 to 9 big tantrums a day . I try to give him choices yet it's not enough . We take him to the playroom , living room basement yet he always seems to get bored with things and moves on from one thing to the next maybe concentrates on one thing for 2 min but he always seems bored and fussy. I don't know if this is normal. When do tantrums start to get better as he's 22 and only talking a bit not as many words as I'd hope.
I wander what can i do if what i need to teach is "do not throw things to the floor" or "do not throw things outside playground/crib" he is now 12 months and 1st and 99% of everything he does with things on his hands is to throw it out of range, on the feeding chair he puts his hand outside the table looks at us and drops tous/food wtv is at hand, playground grabs toys from the floor and throws them outside, doesnt matter if i am there trying to play ball with him he grabs the ball and throws outside and i cant seem to teach him to throw the ball back at me

My 9 month old has decided it’s time to drop his second nap. I always try to get him to take a second nap around 3-4pm (which falls in line with his usual wake windows) but daylight savings has really thrown a wrench in that. Do you have any tips on convincing a baby to just submit to their drowsiness?
I assume you have blackout curtains? Our 9.5mo naps twice. 1030-12 or so then 4-5 and she doesn't have an issue with that second nap. If anything the first nap has more light coming in
I literally had this issue with my son but we just kept with it until he caved in it took 8 days 💀 I feel like I aged 40years due to some missed sleep for me
I have a montessori style room for my toddler, which means in short there is nothing he can really do to seriously hirt himself in there unsupervised. He even sleeps on a mattress on the floor so if he fall out its only a few inches. This has allowed me to keep a regular nap schedule even through sleep regressions. At 1pm he has to stay in his room for 1 hr woth the lights off. He can choose to play for that hour or sleep and sometimes he has not napped for a week and sometimes he naps extra long. But this allows me to have a 1 hr dedicated time i can sleep and just set myself an alarm to let him out.

Why isn’t she allowed in the kitchen? It is the major activity center of most homes. I have had a learning tower for my now 3 year old for 2 years. She is always in my tiny kitchen with me. She has her own apron, wooden children’s knives and cutting board. She loves cutting up fruit and vegetables and getting her bowl of oatmeal ready in the morning. (I think she likes the preparing more than the eating.). As she said, children want to be independent, do things for themselves and learn everything possible. Lots of opportunities for those in the kitchen.
This is in the morning while her Mom is getting ready for work and feeding the dog. She’s in the den with me, but it’s a sunken den. She is allowed in the kitchen all other times.

My 13mo is just starting with tantrums, they are intense! The thing is that I don't know how to get through to him during those episodes... I think he doesn't understand much yet when I talk to him... He throws himself on the floor and cries loudly a lonng long time, I try talking calmly, caressing, hugging to let him know I'm there but he doesn't react or listen, obviously, in that moment of maximum frustration it's hard... But, is there any other way to deal with tantrums once they are happening?
Holy cow, yall are feeding your 15 month old toddlers FIVE times a day!? I don't even know how or where I would fit anyything else in? And my tot wouldnt even eat that much. Im a first time mom and learning these things sometimes makes me feel like I'm doing everyyy thing wrong. But at same time..5 times a day just sounds excessive, no? Just me? Ok well maybe I'm doing I am doing it all wrong..but I can only do my best and continue to try and learn and adjust to what myy baby personally likes and needs.

Magnetic blocks are what's up 😂 my 18 month old loves stacking stuff but hates when they fall so I got magnetic blocks...frustration free 😂

I read a book that talks exactly about it. It is call simplicity parenting. You might want to have 6-10 at a time, build a toy library and rotate them very 2 weeks.
Emma I love your videos! My son is 22 months and he communicates so well! He tell me what he wants and I try to give him other options but he gets so mad if it isn’t what he is asking for. He will bang his head on the floor and bruise himself. I try to distract him but he has a really hard time switching from the reactive side of his brain to the other. HELP ME! I need tips for what to do once we are in a tantrum!

Thank you so much Emma !! I have been making these mistakes very often despite of constantly reminding myself not do. I’ll definitely work on it. 😊 Also, my little one is obsessed with dustbins! I mean , he definitely has this amazing habit of throwing things in dustbins and not here and there, he just wants to keep throwing tissues, even food sometimes in it and then my “No” comes out ! It seems they get obsessed with somethings that they have learnt initially and keep doing that only! He loves dustbins 😂😂

Hi Emma, very helpful. What do you do when they choose the orange, you peel it, and then they 'change their minds' and want to have the apple and tantrum again? Do you then always have to give in or set boundaries and wear it out?

I feel validated! I figured out tips 1 and 2 early and can confirm this works. Keeping a routine is difficult. Hiding toys is a must, and not accidentally singing the paw patrol theme (or something similar)😂

My 11th month old arches her back bad and throws a fit at night when it's time for bed and she is super tired but fights it and screams herself back awake. Any advice for how to help that?
Your little one might be overtired and fighting sleep so you could try moving her bedtime forward. Using a bedtime routine (if you don’t already have one) might also help.

Wow thanks a lot! I let my little one do what she want, within a limit of course. I definitely forgot about number 2 but otherwise i did remember the other ones before i got my little one! Hehe its a whole psychological game all the time.
Its very important to let them do what they want to do without saying no. They get bored easily if they see you not interested in them playing with the wrong things. Of course, keep them out sight in the first place hehe.
I don’t have the big issues with my baby but she definitely let me know what she want and when she want it!!! I always offer alternative if she start crying when i take away something from her and she shut her crying fast.
Again, especially tired babies just love making a big drama!

That's how it was with me.. Then at 20 months I started seeing how she would get angry so much and wanted to do what she wants... At 24 Months now I have lost her 😂🙈she screams at everything now 🙈🙄 whether shoes, or going home.. I can say whatever I want or prepare her but she is very stubborn 🙈

My baby is 9 months old and she's definitely starting to have tantrums. I find it really hard because she's so little, her language skills aren't developed. The other day she had a tantrum because she was struggling to pick up pomegranate seeds with her slippery hands, but she wouldn't let me clean her hands or help to put it in her mouth 😂 fun times 😅
It can be really hard! It is so difficult when their fine motor skills are still developing and they don’t yet have words to express their frustration.
These are all great tips however these days I have a difficult time with my 17 month old when i do diaper changes. He’ll often scream and cry as if he’s afraid. Not sure really how to avoid those.

My 19months old has figured out how to make himself vomit by putting both his hands in his mouth. He has been doing this for the last month. He does it mostly when he is upset, wants attention and not getting his way. It is so heartbreaking to watch specially when he vomits his entire milk bottle or lunch. He even does it in his car seat whilst am driving. When I Try to stop him by holding his hands down he tries to fight me and would only give up when he gets my full attention(picking him

I have a 22 month old with maybe 8 to 9 big tantrums a day . I try to give him choices yet it's not enough . We take him to the playroom , living room basement yet he always seems to get bored with things and moves on from one thing to the next maybe concentrates on one thing for 2 min but he always seems bored and fussy. I don't know if this is normal.

My 9 month old has decided it’s time to drop his second nap. I always try to get him to take a second nap around 3-4pm (which falls in line with his usual wake windows) but daylight savings has really thrown a wrench in that. Do you have any tips on convincing a baby to just submit to their drowsiness?

I assume you have blackout curtains? Our 9.5mo naps twice. 1030-12 or so then 4-5 and she doesn't have an issue with that second nap. If anything the first nap has more light coming in
Keep trying and keep the routine the same. There’s usually a regression around this age but they’ll fall back into regular nap routine.
I literally had this issue with my son but we just kept with it until he caved in it took 8 days 💀 I feel like I aged 40years due to some missed sleep for me
I have a montessori style room for my toddler, which means in short there is nothing he can really do to seriously hirt himself in there unsupervised. He even sleeps on a mattress on the floor so if he fall out its only a few inches. This has allowed me to keep a regular nap schedule even through sleep regressions. At 1pm he has to stay in his room for 1 hr woth the lights off. He can choose to play for that hour or sleep and sometimes he has not napped for a week and sometimes he naps extra long. But this allows me to have a 1 hr dedicated time i can sleep and just set myself an alarm to let him out.

Why isn’t she allowed in the kitchen? It is the major activity center of most homes. I have had a learning tower for my now 3 year old for 2 years. She is always in my tiny kitchen with me. She has her own apron, wooden children’s knives and cutting board. She loves cutting up fruit and vegetables and getting her bowl of oatmeal ready in the morning. (I think she likes the preparing more than the eating.). As she said, children want to be independent, do things for themselves and learn everything possible. Lots of opportunities for those in the kitchen.
This is in the morning while her Mom is getting ready for work and feeding the dog. She’s in the den with me, but it’s a sunken den. She is allowed in the kitchen all other times.

My 13mo is just starting with tantrums, they are intense! The thing is that I don't know how to get through to him during those episodes... I think he doesn't understand much yet when I talk to him... He throws himself on the floor and cries loudly a lonng long time, I try talking calmly, caressing, hugging to let him know I'm there but he doesn't react or listen, obviously, in that moment of maximum frustration it's hard... But, is there any other way to deal with tantrums once they are happening?

Holy cow, yall are feeding your 15 month old toddlers FIVE times a day!? I don't even know how or where I would fit anyything else in? And my tot wouldnt even eat that much. Im a first time mom and learning these things sometimes makes me feel like I'm doing everyyy thing wrong. But at same time..5 times a day just sounds excessive, no? Just me? Ok well maybe I'm doing I am doing it all wrong..but I can only do my best and continue to try and learn and adjust to what myy baby personally likes and needs.
