@@tobyl.1703 This is a year too late but you've overtightened that string, you want to go the other direction, don't worry, most strings players make this mistake at least once.
This is the first two finger picking song from you I’ve fully learned it took a few days but after many attempts and rewatching your right hand I finally got it. I really love your style and I hope to someday be as good as a quarter of you ☺️
Update: I had originally given up because with the strings in Ukelele order it was hard to understand. But I switched the strings around and boy is it easy to do. Thank you Clifton for making your tutorials easy to follow. I will consider paying for your patreon
Ok so Ive been telling myself im gonna get a banjo for months now. Im going in to do some overtime today then heading to a shop to buy one after I get out. I cant stand not having one, Ive been playing my guitar like a banjo to make up for it..
As a guitarist I also had admired the Banjo from afar for years. I had listened to Earl Scruggs and Grandpa Jones , then got very excited by Bascom Lamar Lunsford, but it was Dock Boggs that made me really really want a Banjo! I'm ashamed to say I really didn't persevere with it until lockdown and now I'm really enjoying it ✌️😊🪕
I know this video is old, and you’ve probably already figured it out, but Lloyd Chandler is featured on the High Atmosphere album singing this very song. It’s devastatingly beautiful.
John Cohen went around western North Carolina and made some recordings that were released as an album called "High Atmosphere" in 1974. There are a couple of recordings of Lloyd Chandler on there, as well as his cousin, Dillard Chandler. Included is Conversation with Death with some interesting commentary. It is done as a vocal, but there are some beautiful banjo performances by others on that album. Love this song. Just got a banjo this Christmas. Definitely challenging for someone who has never played any kind of instrument but had always wanted to. Id assume the tabs or sheet music is on patreon?
Thanks for this. I bought my Goodtime open back about 4 years ago because I really got into Dock Boggs ,his late 20's recordings and the later early 60's recordings. I'm a guitarist and really didn't get on with the Banjo until this year ; plenty of spare time because of lockdown. The trouble I'm having is keeping it in tune at these lowered alternate tunings. It's fine in regular G tuning but as soon as I tune down ,it doesn't want to stay put. Any tips ?
Shaun, it's hard to say. The only thing I can think of that would do that is if your tuning pegs were loose. Depending on the type that are on your banjo, you can easily tighten them with a small screwdriver.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Great stuff thanks for all your advice. It was actually my fault following bad information on the tuning. I can see now ,you're only tuning down the fifth string to F# & the second to A ,whereas the various tunings I found elsewhere online are totally incorrect with all the strings being at least a whole tone too low. The Goodtime I own is made by Deering in the states with geared tuners and their standard frosted head, it's the lowest price model and doesn't have a truss rod , but it now seems to be tuning up very well and with good intonation. Thanks again 👍
lol ... all around the world it's called index/pointing finger but in US "trigger finger" 😁😁 .. nice tutorial! It'd be helpful if you named the chords, since it's a wird tuning not many noobs like me have played before. But I guess it's a good excercise to figure it out as well
Another great version is Jen Titus, from Supernatural. Great version. Think I may have to dust off my 5 string bass and do a version. And it's not a trigger finger! It's a booger hook!
Sam Amidon does my favorite iteration of this tune on his album All is Well. Follows it with Prodigal Son on the next track and the two sound so beautiful together
@@CliftonHicksbanjo I like cheap lol. Thank you! Also, are your tabs exactly the same as the way you play it here? It might just be me but they seem slightly different
Put a capo on the fifth fret, use the high E as the bottom string on the banjo, tune your guitar (with the capo on) to the tuning in the description and follow along! Best advice I've got.
Got my first banjo about an hour ago and this is the first song I learned. Thx man ✌️
Yeah
Hell yeah im very new to banjo and learning this song I got it down just need to get the right timing for it, could you post a video of your progress
How did you get it tuned. I tried and popped the first string

Same here! Reminds me of playing Until Dawn for the first time 🥲
Morning Clifton, thank you for this great lesson. Dock Boggs would be proud!

As I'm still in the learning stage on my banjo I appreciate the clear images of your left hand.
Absolutely love listening to you play the banjo love old leatherstocking
Something I like about you is that you play the song we are going to learn. I have never heard this song before, so that helped me!
I love this one so much... we need more albums from you also. The one I have isn't cutting it Clifton.
Man I can only dream of playing like that. Just starting to learn because of your style. Keep up the good videos.
..done this since the '60's thx for tunin me in to nimrod..
You sir are one of the best banjo player I have ever heard 😊
I love this two finger style. Thanks for posting. It amazes me all the tunes that can be done via this method and sounds so good.
Love history of music
Brilliant
You seem like a standup guy Clifton. Thanks for the lesson man
I really appreciate you sharing this.
Thank you.
really like the way the overhand sounds!
Yeah, boy!! Thanks, Clifton!!
BANJO FOREVER
This is everything I hoped for when I first got a banjo 🪕🤩
I have tuned my concert ukulele to your banjo, and boy am I trying to get this

Great stuff, thank you!
This is AWESOME.
Thanks!
Thanks a bunch for that my friend I appreciate you! !!
Bravo Much Respect
Ever since I saw your friend Old Leatherstocking play this, I’ve been dying to learn it!
Also this tuning is bizarre! But I dig it for sure
Love what your doing here, friend. Looking forward to more.....Subscribed. :)
Dude you’re awesome.
Lovely stuff!
Woo!
As someone who often plays out in the woods, I know your pain as far as the bugs are concerned lol

My guitar store is owned by Ralph's banjo player
You have a real good voice I like you

And assuming you're using a plastic head, that plastic head should be good and tight to where your bridge isn't sunk down below the plane of the rim.

Got a bluegrass tab?
Such a great song and great lesson! Do you have any tips for getting into this tuning from g standard without a tuner?
Drop the 4th string so 4th string 7th fret matches with 3th string open. 3th string 2nd fret matches 2nd string open. 2nd string 3th fret matches open 1th. 1th string 4th fret matches open 5th
Oops I goofed it, 2nd string 5th fret matches 1th string open
What kind of banjo is this one it's beautiful
Mike, that's a 1920s Slingerland. Not quite their "Maybell" model, but similar.
Did you ever take voice lessons? Or did you develope it on your own?
Never had a lesson. I've always tried to sound like Hank Williams and Lead Belly.
I can't figure out how to tune to this... can anyone help me out?
Anyone has any idea what others songs one could play in this tuning?
I play "Naomi Wise" in gCGAD, and "Little Birdie" in eCGAD.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Alright Clifton, those will be the next two songs to dive into on my banjo journey! Thanks a lot!
I see in the beginning you’re playing the 5th string, as well but in your tutorial you didn’t mention it
Any tips on how to tune? I cant seem to get it right and tuner apps are no help? What kind of tuner should I get?
I recommend the cheapest electric tuner you can find that clips onto the peghead of the instrument.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo I like cheap lol. Thank you! Also, are your tabs exactly the same as the way you play it here? It might just be me but they seem slightly different
🙂👍👍👍👍
D'ya think Lloyd Chandler's request was granted?
Can somebody give me the guitar chords to this song
Put a capo on the fifth fret, use the high E as the bottom string on the banjo, tune your guitar (with the capo on) to the tuning in the description and follow along! Best advice I've got.
(Ignore the low E string)
I have a feel like if I played this at a church I would be sprayed with holy water and have a cross shoved in my face

Hey, where is your Instagram account?
We deleted that about a year ago.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo oh no, why? Do you have an easy to banjo tab for white Christmas 2 finger style? What do you think about election? peacee
😎
seems like you only showed how to do the first half of the b section.

I thought banjos were tuned to G, D, G, B,D or open G- I play at guitar
they usually are, but some some songs have different tunings
kinda wish you went into more detail with the right hand
Definitely doesn't break it down the best and the tabs doesn't even match. Definitely canceling my subscription
