    Laptop battery reconditioning, Battery repairing of Laptop.
    This video shows how to re-use your exhausted laptop battery with the help of old battery of laptop. I have shown replacement of dead cells (Li-ion batteries) of the exhausted battery with the proper Li-ion cells (3.7 V rechargeable batteries). I have successfully replaced the old batteries and now it is working fine and giving me the backup of 2 hrs approximately..
    Thanks for watching my video.

    Even after full charged ( auto cutoff green light turned on) as shown in video, why it is showing 73% when checked in laptop. It means one of the 4 batteries u did not change is gone. U checked 2 batteries in parallel at a time, obviously it won't show if one in 2 parallel connected batteries is bad. Best is to test each battery seperately.

    I believe some laptop battery packs will self-destruct if you remove a pair of cells or cut off the voltage to the controller board in the pack. Thus when the cells are replaced, the pack will refuse to work, and laptop will not recognize it. This is done to stop tampering of the sort you see in the video. I believe if you maintain the voltage when replacing, by using an external power source, this barrier can be circumvented
    .

    • @arshadpc7691
      @arshadpc7691 5 лет назад +1

      You are correct. You have to do this very carefully because once tampered, it will even refuse to detect same battery packs.

    • @geoffrey5239
      @geoffrey5239 5 лет назад +1

      You are correct - mine self-destructed (by burning out a PCB track) when I replaced two middle cells. I had separated all the cells to test them separatedly and I did not realise that the pack memory chip (a BQ20Z75) has the ability to destroy the circuit if its senses that the battery pack has been interfered with !

      @@newyork9453 I would also recommend buying cells with solder tabs already installed. You aren't supposed to solder directly to the battery terminals (heat can cause cell to explode + they don't make for good solder joints. Solder won't want to stick to them). The solder tabs are tack welded usually which requires special equipment.
      So look for ones with solder tabs when you go to buy the cells. It will save you a lot of trouble. ;)

    Hello, just came back from the workshop after following the steps in you video and hey presto nice fully charged battery. In my case there was a badly soldered wire which was loose on opening which had the effect of reducing the top voltage to 8v also although all the cells were ok one was adrift from its welded tie reducing the capacity. Fixed both and now a nice big smile. Thanks for the inspiration to give it a try.

Getting it wrong can also be a fire risk when plugged into the mains for recharging, That's your home at risk then too. All in all, it's just not worth the hassle.

It was much harder to open since the plastic was apparently melt-welded at the seams, so had to cut & break the plastic to get it apart. The batteries were also glued inside the case. Otherwise the six 18650 batteries were welded together the same and the 2 center ones were also reading no charge. Perhaps the middle ones die because they get hotter.

      No, a new battery pack should be better if the cells are from a quality manufacturer (ex. Panasonic). Been a while, but I recall my repair worked, but the case got a bit mangled from the effort. I ran across a new battery pack on ebay or Amazon for ~$20 USD so bought one. Previously, a new pack cost $150 which wasn't justified for an older laptop PC. I recovered the good 18650 batteries and use them in flashlights now (plus some from other packs). Many people say they are still good-as-new if they charge to 4.2 VDC, but seems some of them do so but don't last long in the flashlight before needing recharge though haven't done new vs old comparisons. People use used 18650 batteries for many things, including rigging up backs for e-bikes and e-scooters (many youtubes). A Tesla Model S uses ~7000 of them (not easily recovered or swapped).

    Is there a laptop brand that got software inside the battery, that will prevent people from replacing the batteries?
    E.g. if the PCB got no power at all, it will set a counter and the battery refused to charge? ( I remember to have read that people advice to put a power supply on the board with the same voltage of the batteries, so the pcb will not notice the temporary removal of the batteries) Is this true?
    Are there other tricks that manufacturers use, to prevent replacing batteries and how to overcome this? Are there other reasons why this could not work?

    This video while okay as a basic procedure is okay, there are several issues it does not.cover that will popup depending on the charge controller. i wont get into those, but wanted to share a trick I've learned to open the pack.
    A trick you can try to open the battery pack's plastic case; with the connector side facing up and towards you, firmly hold one end in each hand, the gently twist the pack back and forth about its central horizontal axis (e.g. Turn your left hand back and right hand forward while keeping the pack horizontal) DO NOT twist it excessively as you can damage the charge controller board and possibly harm some wire connections. If you don't care about the charge controller you can be rougher.
    Use at your own risk. I've had great sucess with most packs and the plastic case spilts perfectly on the seam with no or minimal breakage making is easy to glue back together once you have RE CELLED the pack.

    Nice video!!!
    I tried this to my laptop's battery and I would like to ask you if the new cells must have the same capacity with the older because after I did that with higher capacity cells(I replaced them all
    ),battery doesn't charge even though it recognizes it normally.

    • @samijamal6954
      @samijamal6954 5 лет назад +3

      Yes. Must be exactly the same with everything because the circuit will never recognize
      Or the circuit must be restarted before connect them with batteries

    I don't recommend replacing few cells with totally different brand . As different cells made by different manufacturers react differently when plugged to recharge . You will overheat or potentially blast

      I have hp dv4 laptop. In my case, the white led beside the dc jack indicates that you have dc power and not to indicate 100% charged. There is another set of white leds located below the keyboard for hardisk activities, and charging condition.

      I think it was a calibration issue, when the laptop battery was not good, it had let's say 85% of theoretical capacity in power available, so computer remap 85% of power to be 100% full. But when he turned the laptop on current was able to go into the battery so the computer understood it os not full, and will calibrate it again

  • @adamj537

    I'm surprised you decided to solder the tabs back onto the battery cells. Isn't that dangerous, as the heat might cause the battery to catch fire? Typically I think those tabs are welded instead, which a normal consumer doesn't have equipment to do,

    • @AliOpridai
      @AliOpridai 2 года назад

      Normally it is spot welded. Spot welder can be made from a Microwave transformer.
      And yes you are right, Soldering 18650 can heat up and inturn blast/Catch fire. At times it can melt the covering and shorten a battery which can results in blast or fire.

    That’s interesting! Even though the good-condition cells’ voltage are not same , you combine them. Aren’t they supposed to be the same voltage?

    • @jpsalis
      @jpsalis 2 года назад +1

      In parallel yes, in series no, as long as the voltage is in a safe range and you put it on a charge. The BMS deals with balancing all the cells, but it doesn't hurt to make them similar in voltage.

      @@dragonballthings688 When I was a young lad, my dad would drive his car to the garage for a battery test. I was fascinated to watch the mechanic put a heavy gauge prong with a big gauge resistor across its cells, with a meter. It sparked spectacularly, then the mechanic would take the reading. The same principle works on lithium batteries (without the fireworks), but scaled down. Modern meters take hardly any current compared to the old swing-needle analogue ones, unless they are designed to test batteries.

    It's better not to solder the cells, as not everyone is professional. Better to give it to highly experienced person.

    • @Infinite_War

      People are far more capable than you give them credit for. Professional is just a paywall for people who prey on others ignorance. Don't be part of the fear mongering culture that likes to keep people uninformed and incapable. For example: Did you know that barbers used to do dentistry? Imagine paying 20$ instead 4000$ for the same procedure.
