    Thanks for the remark that if the battery does not charge at all, the controller is gone. My battery went from pretty normal to zero charge. This tells me I shouldn't try to replace the batteries because it is the controller that is out. I appreciate that one remark that has saved me from aggravation.

    Thank you for the video. You're awesome. It only took me about a minute to open an old dead laptop battery. I got 4 working batteries out of it (charging now) and 2 dead ones. I figure it saved me about 36 bucks. This is actually better for the environment, the laptop battery would have ended up in a landfill. Now the plastic case is recycled and there is 60% less waste in the near future. Haters are idiots, - it's next to impossible to short out a battery or cause "explosion" by doing this, the batteries are connected in series, even if you wedged screwdriver between their contacts somehow, (which is impossible because of how they are lined up) - nothing would happen. You just have to be careful and apply minimal pressure. And always wear safety goggles and electrician gloves when you do this if you want to be absolutely safe. Also - use a voltmeter and intelligent charger.

      Depends on the charge controller. In most cases it will charge higher capacity cells properly but the battery controller will send to your laptop incorrect remain level of battery. So you have to make modification to firmware too.

  • @alxbalmus
    @alxbalmus 8 лет назад +2

    Thanks mate, I'm having some issues with a laptop battery and I think the controller is the culprit.
    I'm no adept of conspiracy theories but do you think they have some kind of cycle limiting software in the charging controller just like the limited page counter on printer cartridges?

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  8 лет назад +1

      +Alexandru Balmus You're absolutely right. There's limit of charge/discharge cycles. And it's not matter of some theories, manufacturers "cares" about consumers and they think like, why this old battery should work 40 minutes it's better to disable it and you will buy a new one which will work for 2 hours. If you have some devices for that type of Li-ion 18650 cells you can still use them for a long time.

    • @BenjaminEsposti
      @BenjaminEsposti 8 лет назад +1

      Also, do keep in mind that the controller can (and likely will) disable the pack if one or more of the cells go bad. Otherwise, that cell can be overcharged or reverse-charged, and that poses a fire hazard, obviously. XP

    • @prawny12009
      @prawny12009 7 лет назад +1

      on older laptop batteries had reset buttons or could be reset by shorting certain pins, this was often enough to restore much of the lost life by reseting the stats.
      newer batteries often need propriatory software and cables to reset the battery stats, so even after replacing cells inside you may not get the full capacity from them.
      they will either not charge fully or show empty while still holding a good charge shutting the laptop down, after all the battery is controlled by itself not the pc so low battery calls made by the battery are taken as true by the operating system.
      you can try setting the computer to do nothing at low and critical battery warnings and hope it stays on past 0% (sometimes this allows the controller to re calibrate) but a lot of the time it does not.

    A question please. I long thought that my laptop battery is dead for good. After all, it has been there for 11 years and for the last 4 year it didn't show any signs of life, just dead weight. Even the indicator on the task bar would always show a red cross. Curious of replacing the Li-ion 18650 and reviving the laptop battery, I have opened it and removed all the batteries. BTW, the soldering was very hard and I kind of ruined the scheme... BUT! What I found really intrigued me. I have taken out all 6 batteries and tested them. All of them show solid 4V charge! Could you please kindly explain to me what is going on?!

    • @MagnumForce51
      @MagnumForce51 Год назад +1

      From what I found old worn out 18650s may charge to full voltage but their current capacity goes into the toilet so that's why the battery can't power the device anymore. The capacity and current capacity have degraded and that is why the battery will either fail to power the laptop/device at all or for a very short time. It's not always voltage being the indicator of a bad cell. ;)

    I'm currently having some trouble with my laptop. I don't know exactly why the situation started (maybe overcharging or something), but it used to just shut off completely with no warning at around 50%, although more recently it'll just shut off after a few minutes, so if the charger happens to slide out and I don't notice in time, it dies.
    Regarding the Hewlett Packard batteries, should I purchase a specific one, or would any of them work? I feel like they'd be a bit different, but I'm not very experienced, unfortunately.

    • @ElectronicsComputers

      I watched that video. My battery pack must be even later since it glues the batteries to the bottom of the case with thick black goo. I recall the circuit board was even longer. The case was much harder to split open. After replacing the 2 inner batteries which showed 0 V (w/ correct polarity), the PC didn't recognize the battery. I don't recall if it was showing that before my attempt. I might have damaged the circuit board from all the prying. A new pack is $150, which is hard to justify for an older Win Vista PC, so it might be a plug-in only one going forward, like the All-In-One type. BTW, I was wrong about the connector being centered, it is slightly offset.

If a producer makes a laptop with a battery where I can renew the batteries, Ill buy it at once.Consumers (us) should put pressure on the companies.

      You'll need to reflash the chip. Otherwise the charge controller still will think that the batteries are dead.

      In most cases yes you can. If your old battery is still OK and charge controller in it not in a protection mode and finally you have to properly disconnect charge controller otherwise it will switch into protection mode.

    • @prawny12009
      @prawny12009 7 лет назад +1

      you can but why not add higher capacity cells for longer service life?
      laptop batteries are often wired series-parallel, series add voltage parallel adds capacity.
      Ideally you need to test the true capacity of each cell and build your pack from matched cells, then balance charge the individual cells before building your new pack (either with a balance charger or just charge all your matched cells fully).
      this ensures that all the cells will charge and discharge at a similar rate , no point having a low capacity cell mixed with a high capacity cell.

    Hi,
    I hope you would be fine
    just one question asking for a long time with many people but no one give satisfactory reply. I hope you can come up to the best to solve my concern and share the info with others as well.
    My question: i have a laptop battery of 6 cells of 18650 series, can i increase my cells by soldering three or six cells more because of this reason to increase the backup time.
    I have no issue if cells are coming out of battery jacket, Can the 6 battery cells chip board found in the battery can control the 9 or more cells at the same time without infected to laptop.
    waiting for reply.....
    Qaisi Kulkar

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  7 лет назад

      NO! It's not gonna work. The charge controller inside of the battery has a chip with firmware. That chip contents some parameters of lithium batteries and it can control charge current, temperature of batteries, time of charging, cicle counter which will disable your battery some day etc. So it's not gonna charge your battery the proper way. The only option to use some sort of external charger for 18650 cells and then make some battery pack for powering your laptop.
