If you're really aggravated trying to follow this guide, there is one crucial detail: The 110 degree transfer window happens many many times in Eeloos orbit around the sun. There could be 30+ times when this happens and most of those times, although you may INDEED be 110 degrees behind it, it may take 8,000+ delta V to get an encounter. If you look top-down and wait for Eeloo to almost touch Jool's orbit as it travels counter-clockwise, THEN be 110 degrees behind Eeloo ( as seen in this video) THAT"S where you want to launch.
I went back to this video today, as I’ve been picking KSP1 back up! Figured I remind myself what to not forget about when going to ‘the Outermost Planet’! That comment at around 08:40 kind of tugged at my heart-strings though. How nice it was back then, be excited for something we didn’t yet know would fail so miserably!..
Eve surface return would be more epic, I think you yourself once described it as 'the final boss of KSP', because it's hard. At least, a sea-level return would be.
I failed at that. Tried several aerobrake maneuvers. Almost made it but at 45km or so my vehicle lost stability and started rotating around. Not to mention no chance of landing with parachutes. My ~8k delta v don't suffice. You can shave off another 3k or so for landing...
"Instead of fooling around with gravity assists or fuel-saving maneuvers, I've decided to just bring along more fuel." THAT, sir, is the proper way to proceed as a member of the Kerbal Space Programme.
My only wish is for a method more systematic than "play around with it until you get an encounter, it's pretty easy". The discussion of orbital rendezvous here was really helpful and specific, so thanks for that!

I just did a quite problematic trip to eeloo on my own, but made it back safely! For the last maneuver, which was very hard to do, I managed to get a gravity assist on Jool to get a Kerbin encounter, but I was 40 m/s of dV short. So I transfered all remaining fuel to a single tank and used Bill to disconnect all that excess weight from my ship. That left me with 406 m/s for a 405 m/s burn, which I managed to pull off. But now space is all polluted with a bunch of empty tanks :P Oh, and the trip took only 24 years 🙃
Awesome, I just set up my first space station in science mode and have almost completed the tech tree, your series has helped me a lot and with 105 hours of gameplay, I’ve become more confident and learned a lot from this game. Soon enough I’ll be using your other videos for inspiration to colonise the solar system, thanks for the help mate
What I like on returns from Eeloo and Jool, you can always get a direct encounter with Kerbin by playing with radial component on your Eeloo escape trajectory.
I got an interesting way to re-enter kerbin with multiple kerbals. Using that command pod at the beginning of the video, slap parachutes on it, and place decouplers and inflatable heat shields on the top and bottom of it. When you re-enter, inflate the shields, slow down, then decouple the shields, then deploy the chutes. I call it "the dumpling".
I managed to unlock the entire tech tree after this mission, which I’ve been playing ksp for 12 months now and this is first time I’ve done it after watching these videos
Last Video: a Layth SSTO (you'll unlock the RAPIER after Dres) but the SSTO should carry some probes which will visit all the moons of Jool. Sounds good? That way you can show beginners how to get encounters within the whole Jool system which can be a bit tricky... Thanks for the great videos Matt!
Hello Matt, great video as always, could i suggest making more misssions with ISRU? That could be a nice difference to see a mission with transfer ship, ISRU lander and Survey satelite launched at once (complicates but I think you can do it ;) ). Have a nice Sunday matt.
I didn't follow your guide exactly but i used your ship with a pretty overkill booster stage. I finally got the ps4 trophies for Eeloo because of you. Thank you very much. It's taken me a very very verrrryyyy long time to get good at this game. You have motivated me to be even better. AND WITHOUT MODS TOO.
I feel like you should finish landing on all the planets after you finish the tech tree. This new series will help new players with the game as it currently is vs an older version.
If you need to have two Kerbals in a lander, then bear in mind that, IIRC, the two-man lander-can masses two tons, but the one-man lander-can only masses half-a-ton. This means that if you use two one-man cans rather than a two-manner, you save literally ONE TON of mass. Stack them on top of each other, with a Science Jnr as well, and you can put columns of 0.5m tanks down six of the eight sides.
Yea, the improved mk2 can has those nice doors that you can put batteries in or w/e. Doesn't save on the weight really, but it's a nice feature that I wish more crew parts had.
New here, so I don't know if you ever look at the comments, but I have a question. Following the confirmation of KSP 2, how would you feel if the devs used one of your designs (one of the cooler ones that come to mind being a single launch base) as a default design in the new installment? Just kinda curious, because a lot of these designs seem like they took a lot of effort to think up and put into practice.
It's hard to teach. It really comes down to just trial and error of messing with the maneuver nodes. Or at least that's how I do them. If you can get to Eve though, it's possible(with enough patience) to get to any other planet in the game(multiple encounters may be required though). Experiment with a probe, and you'll probably get it figured out yourself.
Just saying, I wouldn’t mind a Life on Laythe reboot called Life on Laythe 2 : The Second One. You can also do one for Duna Attacks, Expedition Eve, and Green Harvest.
Hey engineers, I’m going to make a science mode logbook, typing and drawing a book on every day logs on my Kerbals and time around the universe, visiting jool, smashing into duna, Jebediah getting glitches on a ladder on the moon and more, should I do it? And create book copies? Just for us people who play Kerbal?
For a sec I though you were going to say: "but one thing for sure, Dres does not exist!" (At the end of the video). Give Dres some love, a return mission from Eve is not for a beginner's series
I'm pretty new to KSP and in my rush for science I had sent jeb to the mun and I couldn't get him back. Well about 10 hours later I finally got a rescue ship for him on the mun. On the way to the ship he was going too fast with the RCS and blew up. And me being new I forgot to quick save lol.
You should try to create a small quad copter type drone that is capable of flying around on duna similar to the Dragon fly project that is being researched for mars.
Just did this trip there and back. Took me 18 years :( :( And even then, I didn't have enough fuel to intercept Kerbin on final reentry at a safe speed, so needed to turn down heating to 80% :(
Hey Matt if you still don't have enough science after eve or even instead of it please do a pol tutorial because there are hardly any guides to get there and you could get science from Jool and pol. I don't know how to get there and what to do so it would help me a lot
So if you attach a side fuel tank to another fuel tank directly (using no decouplers) then you do not need fuel lines? I am a noob and want to take every science experiment with me and i am not good at docking so my lander are always tall. I also have to bring lots of fuel cause the lander has to get from the surface back to kerbin. So if no fuel line is needed i can stack tanks on the side to shorten the lander and widen its bade.
That feeling when you burn too much Delta V and extend the mission by literal years and call it a trick. Jeb over there has been wanting a steak since year 2.
I know you do alot of stock science tech tree. but it does make for short series. May I suggest doing a mods science campaign to pice up your channel a bit. Id go with a Planet pack like other planets mod and EventHorrizon like I'm doing in Career mode. I like the challange but getting $$ together for the missions is epicly hard. As for mods Id start with USI mod suite including the life support mod. adds another level of challenging. Then Id Say get the Community Tech Tree mod and all its applicable supported mods so you can work your way up the science tree from standard LF/O2 rockets to the various warp and hyperdrive engines.
Matt, do you think ksp2 is ready in 2020 spring? They said so, but i dont know it is maybe a bit too fast hope it is finished by then. As always great video👌
