Let’s talk baby names! Baby Firefly’s arrival is getting closer and closer so James have been on my mind. I made a list of ten Jewish baby names for girls and ten Jewish baby names for boys that I live and might actually use. In this video I will share the names, their meanings, and backstories. Thank you for being here and listening to the Jewish baby name ideas!
Hello and welcome! My name is Chana, I’m married to my best friend, and we have three wonderful children together. We also happen to be Orthodox Jews and we homeschool our kids. This video is a sneak peek into our daily lives :) You can see how this particular Jewish homeschool mom sets up her days, rolls with the punches, and gets it all done. Thanks for watching!

Having lived with an Anglosized version of Devora for almost 66 years now, I’ve thought about what being a bee means. They are hard workers for the good of the community. They will give their lives to save their home and family. They spend their lives making honey and honeycomb; lots of scriptures about that. And without these pollinators we wouldn’t have most of the fruits and vegetables that not only sustain us, but enrich our lives. They fly, drink from flowers, and are beautiful! I think it’s a wonderful name!

Yonasan is "HaShem gives" and Hillel means "praise ". We chose these names also because my husband is a Kohein and so is Yonasan (I always preferred the Ashkenazi pronunciation). I immediately picked another name and my husband agreed. (He really wasn’t going to get a say since he named our daughter and we had agreed that I could choose our son’s name. My sons have 2 middle names each. One of my oldest son’s middle names is Keegan, it means “little fiery one”. He’s a red head who kicked all the time & put me into early labor at 26 weeks! Thankfully I had him at 35 weeks after LOTS of bed rest & medical intervention. He ended up having a roommate when he moved to Chicago with his job that’s named Eitan. He’s the most observant “non observant” Jew that I have ever met! He was my son’s roommate because he said that his Mom was trying to find him a wife & he didn’t want to marry someone who hadn’t had their own life first. He dating (going out to dinner mainly) an observant woman now & he’s discussing marriage.

I love Gideon! It cracks me up that the angel called him “mighty warrior” while he was hiding from the enemy.
I also love it that Gideon was told to “go forth in the strength you have.”

I love that you wait to meet your baby before choosing a name. I always tell my daughter that she told me her name. Lots of boy and girl names had been written down, but hers came to me as I held her. I've never regretted it. In our family we never use nick names either. I don't understand why so many Americans do that. I hope you have a safe delivery.

As someone with a super-common American name, I appreciate your looking for less-common names for your kids. (It's one thing to know another kid in your neighborhood; it's an entirely different matter when there are three of you in one class!) Wishing for an easy birth and recovery and for this little one to be the perfect addition to your sweet family!

My daughter's high school class had four Sarahs. They called one another by their last names to avoid confusion.

Chana, I love your channel! Your list of names is beautiful, just a couple of comments:
Etai is still commonly given in Israel. We have a grandson named Yedidya who just turned 18 yesterday! I guess it depends on what circles your family and friends are in. Ayala appears in sefer Breishit, chapter 49, in Yakov's blessing to Naftali (but not as a name...). Our second daughter is named Ayala, but that's also a translation of my husband's grandmother's Yiddish name Hinde which means gazelle, as you mentioned. Our Ayala is an amazing young woman, and anyone would be blessed to have such a daughter!
May your baby be born be'sha'a tova umutzlachat and may you have much joy and nachat from all of your children!

I love Jael. She has a great story, and I love telling it when someone needs to know women have always been powerful. I've heard of the name Emre, but from a RUclips wedding. He was quite a handsome groom. Thank you for sharing your lists with us, these were very interesting, and I'll keep the one I guessed to myself. Mazel tov!

Hi Chana! I used to work with a girl whose name was 'Rua', which I thought was lovely; she told me that it meant 'Breath of life', or 'breath of God', in Hebrew. I thought that was lovely, too. LOL- My name means "fierce woman warrior', which my family always teases is amazingly appropriate! I kind of like it. Praying for you and your family as you wait for your new little Firefly! Love from CT. And Happy Fourth to all!!

I love names, we were very careful in selecting because we didn’t want nicknames either and the meaning was so important because we felt like you speak those characteristics over your child each time you say their name. I loved the names but I’m also a fan of the Martha names 🤭

  • @ginnyburley9552

I never have loved nicknames either, although I grew up with a nickname. I always called my children by their names although one daughter with a longer name got a nickname in high school. You’re smart to wait to choose a name until you see the child. A baby is born with a personality that comes through pretty quickly. And a name bestows a blessing and hope for a person’s whole life.

Hi Chana: I love giving Jewish children (traditional) Hebrew names! I like all those on your list; I'm sure whichever one you choose will be wonderful. Great names. I'm in the UK and the name Martha has become very popular along with what my husband calls over granny names like Ada, Ivy and Edith. We are neither religious or Jewish but nearly called our youngest son Oren after a wonderful Israeli friend xxx

עדה/ Adah here 🙋🏻‍♀️ so you mean my name is becoming popular again? 😂 In Israel many Jews from Yemen have my name and other Sephardim but usually the joke amongst my Israeli friends was “oh I have an older aunt named Adah” 🤦🏻‍♀️But it is a name from the Torah meaning “adornment” and the modern version is Adi and there is also Adiya.
