Everybody Is Lying: The Truth About Hades And Persephone

- No one in Greek Mythology is more misunderstood and misinterpreted than Hades, and, subsequently, also his wife Persephone. From wrong depictions of their marriage, to just flat out outrageously wrong depictions of Hades himself... let's set the record straight: Hades was not evil. In fact, if anyone was the bad guy in Greek Mythology it was Hades' brothers Zeus and Poseidon. The Greek God of the Underworld was actually a stand-up guy, who was simply tasked with a job that many deemed evil due to its nature: Taking care of the dead. But really... there is nothing evil about Hades, and also his marriage (or rather the start of it) with Persephone is getting dragged to the mud for no reason, so I truly deem Hades the most misunderstood god in all of Greek Mythology, which is why he is the topic of this week's episode:

Notes
Mythology is a very tough puzzle to piece together, because, let's face it, these stories are thousands of years old. Now, with Greek Mythology, we are lucky because the Athenians were very keen on documenting everything, but because of their thirst for knowledge and education, they also produced many great storytellers, and with a lot of storytelling comes a lot of embellishing and regional differences, so, over time, we ended up with a bit of variety when it comes to Hades, but a whole lot of variety when it comes to Hades and Persephone. For the sake of this video - and all my videos - I try to streamline these tales as much as possible and leave out some details that might make the videos less fun.
So... is this accurate and well researched? Absolutely. Is this the only interpretation or way of telling you about Hades and Persephone? No, this is my way to tell the story.
Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 6 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

Sources:
A lot of people ask me about my sources, and… to be honest, they are a mixed bag. One major source is my lifelong interest in storytelling and mythology. Another is the beautiful endless library that is the internet, and, third, I read the occasional book from time to time, which I’m happy to recommend to you, but also… I’m planning to write my own book on mythology, so, in due time it will be…:

wait so “ can only return to the world of the living for 3 months of every year “ but next line is “ mommy is happy whenever her persephone is back for 9months” and this is what gets me confused “goes back to the underworld for 3 months” like which is it?
damn that I mess up? didn't even notice haha also, you're the first comment to notice.
To clarify: Persephone spends 9 months in the world of the living and 3 months in the underworld. but some myths also say she spends 4 months in the underworld, others say its 6 months.
Eh, depends on the year. Sometimes Persephone only stays in the realm of the living for 3 months, sometimes it's for 9 months, and sometimes its somewhere in between.
Like the seasons, it depends on her mood at the time.
I think it has to do with being awake in another realm while sleeping in a different one.
To be fair...some versions say she ate 3 and some 6 and some 9. It depends on version.
I think it depends on the retelling, in the version I know best she stays in the Underworld 6 months or half the year, but I've heard versions where it's different. I've also heard 4 months (or 1/3 of the year).
Anubis, Hades and Hel has been wronged by Hollywood and Disney.
yes, facts. but I have a feeling one day we're gonna get the proper depictions
@@Briefed_Mythology I hope so
Thank you for mentioning Hel. She is my tertiary goddess and She doesn't get nearly the respect She deserves m
Not just them but ALL underworld gods because in polytheistic religions usually they DON'T want evil underworld gods because since polytheism usually only believes in one underworld why would they believe they will be ruled over an evil monster for all of eternity?
@@suchendelokidottir5673what
In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus exclaimed that he feared coming before Persephone more than her husband. Because while Hades is a very reasonable and just ruler, his wife, while she is not a bad person is still a slave to her emotions. This was why Sisyphus was able to escape the underworld the first time he died, because he was able to play on Persephone's sympathies, who then urged Hades to send him back to the world of the living. Basically if you ever have to stand before the thrones of the underworld, make sure its when Persephone is having a good day and maybe, just maybe Hades will go easy on you.
I love that. thanks for adding that
But if you mess around with her…. Ask pirithous about how well that went
unfortunately i dont think persephone has very many good days
Persephone's name means bringer of death, so i kinda get it. tho i know some refer to her as ''Kore'' , but most of the time i think she was refered to as' 'persephone'' which is funny either because either Zeus and demeter/Styx (probably Demeter) gave her that name or Hades did, but persephone is apparantly a older deity that came
Demeter: What a cute baby, hmm i shall call her *BRINGER OF DEATH*
Listening to his wife is another point in Hades' favor.
Hades really took the oldest son responsibility to heart. It’s one of the funniest things to tell people.
As the quiet kid from kinder garden to college, I can deeply relate to how hades feels.
They call me bad when I feel like him 10/10
Omg fr
It should also be noted that unlike his brothers, Hades was by all accounts very faithful to Persephone and wasn't a serial philanderer, unlike his brothers. There were stories where the nymphs Minthe and Leuce tried to seduce Hades, although the sources are dubious on whether Hades actually gave in to their advances. In fact Persephone turned them into trees when they tried putting the moves on her hubby.
true - Hades was the brother with the greatest sense of responsibility -- looking after the dead, and keeping the defeated titans in tarterus,
If you kidnap your (double) niece from everything that she knows and forcibly marry her, being a faithful husband is the bare minimum of what you should do.
@@graceneilitz7661 In Hades 's defense, it was Zeus that sugested kidnapping Persephone 😅
Hades should have talked with Demeter instead of Zeus...
@@tatianaoliveira2191
That is not a defense.
Hades is the King of the Underworld, and he is perfectly able to think for himself.
Hades and Persephone one of the worst marriages in Greek Mythology. It is even worse that some people try to romanticize it and demonize a caring and loving mother (Demeter).
The only thing “evil” about Hades is his obsession of seeing Zeus suffer in Tartarus for all the evil Zeus committed.
If he wanted that why does he always help his brother aka the guy who gave him permission to kidnap Persephone, plus there is no mention of Hades being envious of Zeus or Poseidon
@@Greeceiscoolpeople who deny Zeus often end up raped or brutally tortured forever so, I can see why
Hades is one of most just god in Greek mythology.
So is Hestia/Vesta.
No 😂
@@user-tp9uw1pr6m He is. But it's a low bae
In other words you remake Hercules Disney you better make Hades an Ally There’s plenty of other entities you can use as an antagonist
@@mitchellneuhoff9946 Hera IS the antagonist.
The fact you mentioned Persephone was known as 'Dread Persephone' made me so happy!!! I love that she got that title. She even got her own throne next to Hades. Made of iron. Persephone had the actual iron throne.
The Greek God I associate with evil has been Zeus for a long time, lol. I got told the story of Prometheus as a kid... Seeing Hercules in the theater was wild for me.
yeah I forgot that a lot of people watching this would already have a good grasp on mythology and now that zeus is the worst of the worst haha I can imagine that seeing hercules knowing everything about zeus was like... what... the hell
@@Briefed_Mythology it was wild for sure. Them being a happy family was crazy.
Zeus wasn't evil, but he wasn't very gentle either.
@@greekwarrior5373 if zeus isnt evil, evil does not exist.
@@aidenchmura Then evil doesn't exist. Imbecile. Zeus was NOT evil!
i love how overly sarcastic productions are really recognised, I love them so much and your channel
omg, I'm obsessed with them haha
Hades was the Greek satan but he wasn't evil. Absolutely not even. He was one of the most moral of all the Greek gods plus he had a much higher role than being the ruler of the underworld only. He also decided where the Greek souls would go eventually.
He wasn't greek satan, the only similarities between them is them punishing evil doers by sending them to Tartarus aka ancient greek hell , and even then he had dominion over most if not all the underworld include.
Greek Satan would be the children of Nyx. She birthed many evils.
Not to mention Hades was originally supposed to be the king of the Olympians considering he was the older brother
If anybody is the greek mythological equivalent of Satan, it's Eris the goddess of chaos and discord. She's the one who goes out of her way to cause trouble and do terrible things.
@@raptormage2209Satan isn't even the dude punishing people, he's the dude being punished the most
King of Sparkles and Aquaman I love that.
I gotta say, Disney didnt "get stuff wrong" in the 1997 hercules movie, they just were not telling the myths of heracles.
Disney has always taken inspiration from myths and fables and fairy tails and turned them into movies with very different storylines.
It was never their intention to re-tell the trials of Heracles
Hades should think about giving his bros a trip to Tartarus
Love these videos it’s so interesting to see the real side of Greek mythology
thanks ben, glad you're enjoying them 😊
Its true, hades isnt evil… he is just tasked to guide souls in the underworld … Zeus is the villain
Hades has always been one of my favorite Gods. Thanks for making him even better ❤
Demeter must really hate Canadians then, because winter here in Canada last more than 3 months😂😂😂
hahaha that made me laugh. also, being from Germany, I can relate. that's why I moved actually haha
Actually the whole everyone thinking Persephone was the orginal ruler of the underworld was because she was mixed with the mesopotamian goddess Erishkagaal of the underworld Kur
And she is cold-hearted AF
yup, to be fair a lot of greek mythology comes from Mesopotamian beliefs. looking forward to doing some videos on ereshkigal and others
@@Briefed_Mythology yes please I would love that
Persephone’s name shows up in archeological sources long before Hades
@@Briefed_Mythology PLEASE make a series on Mesopotamian myths
Hades was the most misunderstood Olympian of them all he was tricked to be the underworlds Ruler, Warden, and its first prisoner. But he always kept his word, and he even created the Elysian fields so his wife could enjoy her time in the underworld with the greatest of humans. And even had 1 mortal.woman actually love hades until persephone turned her into a mint plant
Of course Persephone was the original ruler of the Underworld. In Sumer she was called 'Ereshkigal', and was queen of the Underworld. Her husband, Nergal, was king of the Underworld, just like Hades, but was the secondary ruler to Ereshkigal, just like in early renditions of Greek Persephone/Underworld stories. 👍
I never knew that Persephone was historically mentioned as the ruler of the underworld before Hades, but Greek mythology isn't something I'm sure educated on. However, lots of feminine entities seem to get the role in some way across a lot of different cultures.
Norse mythology has Hel as the ruler of the underworld. Like Hades, she's not evil. If anything, she is often considered motherly as dutiful in watching over the dead. There are some that trace her nomenclature back to an Indo European Psychopomp like Thanatos. Then you start getting into entities like the Valkyries and the way the goddess/goddesses The Morrigan/Badb is/are portrayed in Irish mythology.
In short, Ladies overseeing the dead and picking whose ticket gets punched isn't new. We should all respect these boss babes:)
Excellent content as always!
haha I loved that comment. I agree, and it was a fun read. thanks
Well no, she is not mentioned as the ruler before him in any surviving primary source. It’s conjecture based on the tiny bits of info we have, such as Persephone being named in a list of gods but Hades was not, and the similar myth narratives with Ereshkigal. She may well have been, but we have no actual proof in the form or writing or art.
Your videos are so well made and very entertaining. I love Greek mythology, but I feel like there is very few (accurate) media to learn about it despite how popular it is. You are the blessing I’ve been searching for
thank you, thank you. I really appreciate that. I try to stay as accurate as possible, while also keeping the entertaining factor and not getting lost in details that take away from the bigger picture. thank you for being a part of the journey
For the question you opened with, Zeus.
I USED to buy Hades being evil, but the more I read about the source material, he comes off as lawful neutral at worst.
I wait for video about another misunderstanding person. Ares. I heard, he was not so cruel and also loyal to his lover + protector of Amazonian women
It also would be nice if you will tell more about different version of stories. For example there are two versions of story about Zagreus
my ares video will drop in a couple of weeks, but only focusing on ares, not much on Mars. Also, zagreus will eventually get a video too
As a Greek person who studies greek mythology I love your videos ! Keep going ! And also whoever is curious hades never cheated on Persephone leave was before Persephone and minthe also was before Persephone but minthe was turned into a plant because she kept saying that she would be a better queen ! We love hades x Persephone < 333
always means a little bit extra when it comes from a greek person. thanks a ton 🥹 makes me happy haha
I knew it was kinda complicated when Percy confused Cerebus with a mere ball, wait, I think you need to do an entire piece explaining this tartarus situation. It's still confusing my brain 😂
It was Annabeth
Thanks for giving Hades his due with another great video. But as much as I hate Disney, I have to say that the lie of Hades being evil started long before "Hercules". One example is a 1961 musical called "The Happiest Girl in the World", in which Hades--here in his Roman version of Pluto--has a song about himself entitled "Never Be-Devil the Devil".
thanks for adding that - I didn't know about that
@@Briefed_Mythology I truly would not have expected you to. That was over 60 years ago and wasn't even a particularly well-known musical at the time. But it was based on part on the ancient Greek comedy "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes.
Also, thanks for including the info about Persephone actually being "older" than Hades and more the "true" ruler of the underworld.
Hades always been my favorite Greek diety.

Ironically, death is much better than having the attention of any of the Olympian deities especially when it come to Zeus. Considering how creative the Olympian deities are when it comes to punishing mortals.
Hercules sound track slaps though

Salute brother. This is becoming one of my favorite channels. Keep it up.
thank you brother 🫡
Finally, A video that has the same point of view
A few days ago my sis and I were talking about how we preferred Hades over Zeus and how he's not actually as bad as media portrays him to be. Like just imagine barely doing anything and still getting blamed for stuff, and being the oldest and bro still got the short end of the stick, I'll be pissed to.
the oldest brother is expected to be most responsible. i think its possible that the drawing of sticks never happened.

Thanatos was the inspiration for thanos' name, but thanos is just a copy of DC's Darkseid.
At least his name isn't as tryhard as "Darkside"

omg I love learning deeper into greek mythology, i’ve always thought hades was evil but have unconsciously been realizing that he’s js seen as terrible bc he was the ruler of the Underworld. I’m not sure if there’s a word for it, but I have started to go into goddesses i relate to(i took a quiz on like buzzfeed but i realize more as I research that I am in fact very similar) and have started praying to Nyx, Hera and Hades, Nyx to take away the pain from the day, hera for good marriage in the future(i’m a teenager) and Hades to die a peaceful way and to live a good life after I pass. this helped understand Hades background so much better! Thank you🙏🏽
if you like stories about misunderstood underworld rulers, then you'll like the hel/baldur video I just dropped
Briefed. Hades is truly a tragic god. I watched CLASH OF THE GODS way back in 2009. Hades would've been the ruler for Olympus. But He literally got the shortest straw, or lot. Misunderstood, the worst thing a victim can ever be. I think this is one reason Christians and the world at large compare Hades to Lucifer/Helel. There is a goddess of death in Norse and Japanese mythology/religion.
This may sound strange but a game called Hades got me into the mythology of him. That's when I ran into your channel and man, I love your work and your education of him. Along with the Greek mythos , which I'm now a bigger fan of.
Thank you ! 🙏🏾
not strange at all - hades is an amazing game

@@Briefed_Mythology I have! Been binging them!
Pronouncing it as "Heracles" isn't entirely wrong. In modern Greek yeah, it is (it is pronounced as "Eraclis"), but in ancient Greek it had a special symbol above the first letter which gave it a small "h" sound. Same thing happened with the Greek "o" at the start of a word. That is why Greek words that start with a Heta "η" (Heracles, Hephaestus) or Omicron "o" (Horoscope) and sometimes Epsilon "ε" (Helen) have that "h" in front. That is also the reason the word "hour" starts with an "h" despite it being pronounced as "Ora" in modern Greek.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk

As a Greek yeah we say it like Irakles with an emphasis on the e it's hard to explain without saying the word
