The Sad Truth No One Talks About: Caligula

- Let's talk about Caligula. You know... the guy that is kind of the personification of evil. I'm not gonna sit here and write that his guy wasn't absolutely and horrifically evil, I'm just going to argue that... there are circumstances that turned Caligula into what he eventually became.
Have many people all over the world suffered through worse and not turned into evil monsters? Yes, of course.
There is no real justification to Caligula's actions, yet, it is still worth to look at him in a more humane way - to look at the boy that was before the emperor. I guess... in order to avoid a repeat of evil, we need to understand its origins, so let's try that in this episode.
Episode 3 of Rome's Greatest Emperors: Caligula
Notes:
This is becoming a theme with all my Roman emperor videos, but it is especially true for Caligula (and Tiberius): Most of the existing writing we have - by Suetonius and his peers - is very, very biased and anti-emperor. It's very gossipy and unreliable, and other sources are outdated in the sense that they are 100 years late to the party, which is like me giving you an account of the First World War, without access to all the documentation we have on the war. You get me?
I could have gone more in detail on some of atrocities Caligula committed, but I think the small selection I went with already highlights his ability for cruelty well enough, and it gave me more time to focus on other parts of Caligula's life.
To everyone that already watched my Tiberius video: Sorry for the repetition on Tiberius in this one, but for first time viewers, it was necessary to paint a picture of Tiberius before I can start with Caligula.
Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 10 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

Footage:
As always, some Game of Thrones clips in there, a little bit of Nolan's third Batman (Dark Night Rises), and clips from Netflix' Roman Empire series - the season with Commodus, who was my Caligula stand in for the sake of this video. Oh, and the blonde guy in the beginning, that's Octavian from HBO's Rome.

You know, a lot of History is like that. Take Akhenaten. They tried like crazy to erase him and his family from history and we managed to have three of the most famous Pharaohs from his line: Akhenaten, Nefertiti and of course, Tutankhamen.
Imagine Brutus wrote the history of Julius Caesar.
Happens throughout history. Very sad cuz we will never know how some of these emperors and pharoahs really were as leaders. All cause of jealousy from the elite class.
This is, and always will be an interesting line to take. Just about every civilization has them. Including all of ours. Cool thought
just like Qin Xi Huang burying scholars, historians, and books to ensure that he is remembered as the first ever emperor
Akhenaten was more brazen than Caligula the guy rewrote the entire Egyptian religion and tried to make himself the one and only true god.
You always do such a great job painting the humanity of these almost legendary people. You’re absolutely right to say he wasn’t born a monster, but certainly had everything needed in his upbringing to make him one.
A lot of people are born monsters. 1 - 5 people out of every 100 are psychopaths from birth
Excellent job. I love history and this is very entertaining And informative! New Sub here😊!! Superb delivery ...humor is Good and needed about now,ty!
Nice post,this comment👍👍👍👍👍
We never make ourselves
Briefed stories always aim to tell us the part history doesn't want us to know, for those deemed good, he shows us their evil side and for those deemed evil he showed us their good side, at the end of the day, life is really yin and yang.

I love that clip of Idriss Elba chocking at 1:40, it never fails to kill me lol, please keep using it in your videos! I also love the fact that you put a lot of Game of Thrones clips in the video, especially the ones of Jon saying “I don’t want it” lol! Great video as always!
Awesome, thank you! Just finished watching I, Claudius (1976) and John Hurt as Caligula is outstanding, just like your videos! Such and incredible time in human history. Love your work!
Loved the series so much from watching it during my childhood that I bought the complete series on DVD and watch it every summer, one episode every weekend throughout the summer. Some of the best acting ever!
@@calvinsparrow9829Poor Claudius would surely have been killed by Caligula's German guardsmen if it wasn't for that centurion! "Just a minute, Hermann..."
Such a good fucking show
Its a scene in which Caligula took with Caligula and say,, I think i go mad,, this few seconds saw a tragic destin on a sick person.
omg I Claudius! ❤That's the book that made me fall in love with Roman History!
(I've seen the series as well, quite good!)🌷
I can't overstate how much I enjoy your narration and humor. Keep the videos coming! :)
There’s a book called Blood of the Caesars that talks about Germanicus’ death. It’s worth a read and it theorizes a shocking statement regarding the identity of Germanicus’ true assassin.
The way you tell this story of Caligula, its like poetry bro. Great job, Now I want to do a movie

Great video. I love your style of narrating. So easy to listen to.
Thank you for making history interesting.
thanks gina 😊 and thanks for watching
the way you ended it was so good. with your quote about how he was not born a monster
Thats my introduction to your work. What an interesting approach. It manage to dig really deep between all the humor.
thank you Gabriel. glad you enjoyed it, and welcome to the channel 😊
Thank you for this. I love the way you weave the story. This story is usually told with Rome being the victim of a mad man. In this case we learn what could happen if society turns a boys life upside down then gives that boy ultimate power. He wasn't crazy, he was pissed off. He wanted to see other people's lives ruined as his was. He didn't deserve it and maybe they don't either, which is the point. Well done.
Spot on
Correction he was "crazily pissed off".
Yoo, watching your videos over a cup of coffee is truly a luxury. Great quality broo
thank you Kevin 🫡
Love your story telling style 👍 and the history that goes with it. 👍. Thumbs up..... to die for the Emperor. ✌️
I have been watching your videos for a few days.
You clearly pronounce things the way laymen know them, so you don't confuse any of your audience.
But every now and then you pronounce stuff correctly, and you just keep rollin' with it.
I only studied latin for 2 years, but I am a stickler about the Latin alphabet and pronunciation.
I have an aneurysm every time I hear a movie, TV show, or music album use it incorrectly.
But I love the way you cover history and tell these old stories. Your laid back tone is easy to listen to, and you don't sound pretentious as hell like a lot of other folk do.
And I can tell you love both the history and the language with how careful you are in using words and names. Your little "slip-ups" if they aren't intentional have been a joy to catch.
I know it isn't that important, but I just wanted you to know I appreciate what you do. You've made my work week easier to handle, and i've enjoyed your retelling of stories I haven't heard in a while.
thank you for this beautiful comment - and it makes me very happy to hear that I am contributing to your week. thanks 😊
as for the pronunciation, yes it definitely is me trying to find a middle ground between trying to do the actual name justice but also not alienating everybody - though I am sure there are also slip ups every now and then haha
I go to your channel not only to learn but to relax and go to sleep and learn while asleep ✨
For the algorithm! Keep up the good videos! Love em!
You are a fantastic story teller, i thoroughly enjoyed this.

And a twist of comedy. "He said she said he had her killed" lol
Excuse me brudda but I'm loving this video format
Dope presentation dude !!!
Another great video!
I have listened to countless documentaries and blogs about classical Greek and Roman history but they were so boring I forgot everything I'd learned within weeks however when ever I listen to BRIEFED every detail is remembered and catalogued and never forgot. Ps I'm an honours graduate in sociology and I love this channel. If only my lecturers at UNI were as interesting and insightful .
damn what a beautiful comment 🥹 thank you for those very kind words. motivates me a lot to keep going 🫡
Ive been waiting on this 🔥🔥🔥🔥
That was absolutely chilling bro. Like woah. Idk how you researched and made a script for this. I gotta watch some cartoons now to clear my mind
Your knowledge of the matter is very impressive. I salute you.
Always entertaining and educational. thank you
thank you for watching 😊
Wonderful wonderful video. I had an idea about how perverted Tiberius and Caligula were, but I feel like this is the inside story. Great narration and storytelling, hats down.
Ww2 history buff here gotta say u make this crazy stuff sound cool didnt know any of that just thought about kaligula as the crazy guy from rome, thx good work
This is a fantastic video mate, I love the classical paintings, the music and I've always been fascinated by Ancient Rome. Some of my favourite shows are I Claudius and HBO Rome. I also like listening to Ancient Roman music. I look forward to seeing more of your videos, and greetings from Australia mate.
greetings back to Australia 🫡 thanks for the kind words 😊 and I absolutely love HBO Rome also
@@Briefed_Mythology Your welcome mate and I've also been watching your videos about Greek Mythology. And as someone that loves Greek Mythology I salute you. My dad would tell me stories as a kid and those stories of Gods, monsters, heroes and so many other things. It's always filled me with a sense of wonder, awe and mystery. One of my favourite books is The Iliad, also if your interested Stephen Fry has published an excellent trilogy of books retelling the greek myths. They are called "Mythos" "Heroes" and "Troy" anyway have a good day mate. And I look forward to seeing your channel grow.
You’ve got a great voice for storytelling. Well done.
thank you Elias 😊🥹
This…is….amazing…keep it up fr man.
Love the graphic illustrations too
This is becoming one of my favorite channels, Also an Assassins creed rome inspired game would be pretty nice.
Assassins Creed Origins
Actually, there have been people born that were sociopathic from day one. They tortured small animals and other children from very early on childhood. Can horrible events in youth harm some children forever, I think so, but our actions are always a matter of choice in the end.
Day one I disagree but if allowed it can develop early, some humans are just born with more violent tendancies
The order you are looking for is Psychopath. Sociopath is mostly defined by nature, psychopath is nature.
Yes people with genetic mutations who are also born into families that have no idea how to parent them - who leave lonely tortured children to raise themselves without guidance or correction for wrong actions.
Sociopaths are made psychopaths are born
Great writing, editing, topic, as well as an orator of great skill and wisdom presenting it, and to think--I almost didn't click on the eye-catching thumbnail. Glad my better judgment won, found an awesome channel because of it 😂
you have a pleasant voice. kept trying to figure out if there was an accent or if you were just enunciating the names correctly and it just seemed like there was.
thanks for the content🤙🏻
A wise and witty author once said something about history not repeating, but tending to rhyme.
If this vid is any indication, going to really enjoy this new (to me) history channel. Excellent narration and graphics 😎👍😎
what a perfect and very interesting video !!
thank you thank you
Well, what can we say if not, Bravo! Counting down the days to the story of Nerone.
Another great vid
