    One thing I like about Profoto, Is you can own one or two lights, and if you need another light or two you can rent them, including modifiers. And I think in just about every major city in the world? I've rented Profoto lights, and they are really easy to use, too.

    The drawback? Less than a month ago I invested in two B1X and two used B1's. Had I waited another month I may well have gone with two of these guys instead of the two used B1's. My end price would have been the same. Plus or minus 80 or 90 bucks. Not as much power but I rarely run full power and for when I do need it I still have the B1X's

    Profoto is excellent gear, but the Godox 400 Pro is a better deal at $900 less with all the features, a little heavier but more power.It doesn't have the AC, but you get a ton of pops before it needs recharging, so at the end of the day, just recharge and you're good to go Just my .02 worth. Indeed. And something Daniel keeps preaching about is quality of light. There are indeed less expensive alternatives but the thing about Profoto is they put a ton of research and experience when they bring something out. When you buy Profoto, you know it will work and work well. And work with existing gear.

      Daniel Norton Photographer Yes you ar right, but the Godox Ad 400Pro is still more power full on the output, and more colour stable, if the B10 has similar spec as the B2
      The Godox will be slightly over the B10 but not so much that people think looking at the Ws alone.
      Ws is the power used, not what it is putting out, that’s a different story!
      Godox AD600Pro compared to the Broncolor Siros800L is a whole stop, so you ned 2 Godox 600Pro for the same output as for one Siros800L
      Some thing to think about 😊

    Hi Daniel,
    Can you please recommend a way to solidly mount a heavy umbrella such as a deep XL facing top-down/overhead? Looking to pick up some B10's but concerned about the lack of proper umbrella mount like the B1/X's or D2. Suspect I will have the same problem I already have with most umbrella brackets not having enough friction on the shaft, leading to the umbrella slipping down and hitting the light.
    Many thanks!

    About showing the power on the Air Remote, I have asked a Profoto employee about that, the answer was, when do you ned to se the power?
    I don’t see the necessary in that? And i, OK... don’t need to start anything her...!
    An then we started shooting whit a model, and they wanted to use a B2 whit magnum for rim light.
    (This shoot was an Profoto event for the B1 and B2...)
    So this same employee i was asking earlier, was taping te Air Remote several times, way will not the power go up?
    Now the fun part... it was already on full power🤣😂!!
    Then I smiled and said, that’s why you need to see the power on the remote!!
    And also if you ned to use a faster flash duration, then you ned to se the power, if you now your gear, then you now if you are going over a specific power, the flash duration will be to long, for that you are photographing..
    So ther you have it Profoto, do Some software modifications!!
    Godox from Kina has it?!?!
    It’s all about making photo more fun and easy right?
    And when Profoto talk about how versatile the A1 B1 B2 and B10 is, that you can have it high in the air, and remotely sett the power, it had bin nice to se de power yes!

    • @JamesRudd

      Profoto do a USB dongle, you can see every head in every group, which could be 4 in group A for example and adjust them. The reason they do not show the power in the groups is that many users will have more than one strobe in each group.

  • @andyvan5692

    interesting discussion, but most likely the phone use is more towards say a flash meter, or an exposure meter, like the LF shooters use, in an APP, and you use the phone to run the app, and to "fire" the lights, to get a measurement of exposure / lighting, as another tool, NOT to take the "money" shot, just as a set-up tool, this is probably the end goal, just haven't got there yet; this is just the first steps. ( a more economic solution than a sekonic light & flash meter).

    Hey Daniel! Thanks so much for your overview. I just took delivery of my B1X kit (two lights with backpack). Love it. Just did a model agency test today with it, and loved everything. I am a power user (my style), and HSS power is important. It appears that this is a full stop less power (value 9.0 on B1X) and trying to wrap my head around if that's really enough. I just upgraded to Profoto from Elimchrom Quadra (with HS heads) and also Ranger RX packs. So, the B1X with no wires is nice! But, now LOL.. this is so much smaller and more travel friendly. Question for you.. in HSS is there still only a one stop difference vs. B1X? Or.. is this a different story? Nice work!

      Hey Daniel! I want to ask you.. (and let me first say, I very limited experience reading a light meter.. and am learning from you). Hopefully you can explain this so it makes sense... Because I needed help understanding, I googled f-stop, and calculators etc.. to learn more about the different values. I found this calculator online: www.scantips.com/lights/fstop.html and when I used the second option to compute two different f-stops I got a confusing result. So, for example.. the B10 put out a flash reading of f/11.3. Then, the B1X put out f/11.8. The difference being .5 or.. as you said half a stop. I get confused when I look at the f/stop charts.. it looks like if I were at say f/11...one third more would be f/13...and a third more f/14... and a full stop would be f/16? In this case, the difference from the two flashes, looks like it's almost zero? or.. at best less then 1/3 of a stop? If the meter had read say... f/12.3 (from 11.3) would this have been a full stop on the meter (10 points difference). In a piratical sense, if you had lowered the value of the B1X power to 9.5 this would have said to be the same as the B10 (half a stop). What I am trying to do, is at home I want to create a scene where I get everything dialed in as needed, and then I want to lower the power of the B1X, to simulate the power drop if I were using the B10 to see, and get an idea of what I would expect etc. Based on your test, I was thinking this was 5 "clicks" on the B1X (half stop), but then when I look at the info online about the difference in the values, I got all confused. LOL. You have way WAY more experience then I do with this and wanted to check in to see if you can explain it better in simple terms. Thanks Daniel!!

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer  6 лет назад +1

      B10 is smaller / more versatile package in many ways. B2 is a bit less powerful. Profoto has a better remote system. Really all 3 are good though. You’d be doing ok with any of these.

    • @kenbot77
      @kenbot77 6 лет назад

      Cheers for the reply! Great to get input from someone who's used all. Yeah, there's a few things in there for consideration.
      As far as remotes go, by "better" are you saying that the Profoto remote system is more "reliable", like less misfires? Another note on the remotes... I think (could be wrong) that the Elinchrom system is adding the ability to see what power you're at on with the HS/Pro remote (via firmware update) which is VERY helpful with lights up high and in weird places! Profoto really should get on to that being available through a firmware update on the Air TTL remote (has a screen).
      The Profoto B10/B2 lights seem like it might be able to attach to normal Profoto modifier fittings if the weight of the larger modifiers are supported, Elinchrom can but through an adapter, and the adapter has limits to the size (really, the weight) of the modifier too. I like the 'Pack and Head' style kits for their ability to keep the main weight away from where the subject/product is, and allow a bit more manoeuvrability of the head near/over things easily.
      Profoto has a bit too much of a jump between their B2 Pack and Head, and their B4 Pro Pack and Head I think. For people that want to stay in, or start in, the Profoto system, I think they should re-do the B2 style pack and head, which is also very similar to the Elinchrom ELB400/ELB500, but up at the Elinchrom power range, 500ws, like their B1/B1x.
      Profoto B4 Pro is just too big/heavy/expensive. Broncolor Move 1200L looks great, a bit smaller and easier to sling around, but still very expensive.
      I think Elinchrom have the power/size ratio right in the ELB400/500 packs. But it seems like I'd be using Profoto/Broncolor hire stuff at bigger studio shoots, and therefore half/most of the Elinchrom modifiers you have might not be of any use, and your Elinchrom (smaller Quadra) mount light won't adapt to the Profoto/Bron modifers very easily either.
      Conclusion? Profoto is innovating and trying new products, Broncolor is not (well, veeeeeeeery slowly). Profoto should make a 500ws Pack and Head battery kit, no?
      'til then... I might look at the newer Elinchroms. Hmmmmm.

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer  6 лет назад +1

      By better I mean more control, the ELB still can't (as of today) control each head separately on a pack. Yup, you can see the power on the Elinchroms, which is great! Yes the B10 and B2 can take full sized Profoto accessories, the ELB uses an adapter which works really well.. ELB also shows flash duration on the pack which is pretty sweet. All in all, I'd say you can't go wrong with any of them.

      While natural light can be good, being able to create your own light is the hallmark of a working professional. When a client want a certain shot to look a certain way in a certain location, you cannot use natural light.

      @@Molaleni Natural light is fine but apart from a few tricks that usually involve more gear than lighting it would, skrims, reflectors etc, you pretty much get what you are given. If it's amazing light you can get amazing results but if it's crap, we'll guess what 😉 Being able to light a scene and make it look natural or however you want it to look, now that's a skill 😀

      I tend to want as much power as possible with Macro so might go with the B1X if the budget is there.

      @@DanielNortonPhotographerI know you believe in the Profoto product but why don't you do a one on one comparison between the Godox products and the Profoto products. It would strengthen your position if you can prove the so called watt seconds and color temperature issues you have mentioned in your videos.

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer  6 лет назад

      I don't have time to "prove" that an established brand that commercai photographers have come to rely on is better than a cheap knockoff - every few years a new cheap brand makes all these claims and then slowly fades away - Also I have spoken positively about numerous other brands besides Profoto. Buy what works for you is all I can say.

      @@DanielNortonPhotographer I understand your position. Using a premium brand like Profoto, Broncolor, or Elinchrom makes sense for full time photographers. Personally I love the specs of the B10 but I cannot make the business case to drop $1595.00 for a 250 ws strobe. As you said choose what works for me. Right now Yongnuo, Godox, and Flashpoint works for me. P.S. isn't the B10 a knock off of the AD200 :).

  • @DamonBowe

    b10 versus b1x versus some godox. I can't understand why you wouldn't include godox stuff because at the very least you would get way more views on your videos. You can just trash godox, or not (and for the love of god don't even mention customer support because who cares), but putting it in the video is going to be the best thing you could ever do.

    Nice. But, Holy Cow expensive (holy cow = god ox). And SM, talk like a teacher outside a sjool and the facts must be right, including units. Ws or W.s is Watt.seconds - the micro sibling of kilo.Watt.hours or kWh. Don't say this puppy is 250 Watt as Watt is defined as W.s/s and constitutes a unit of potential power for comparisons and not energy consumption per se. Make the calculation: 250 W.s per 1/400 s gives 100,000 Watt. And that is why a flash gives so much more light than a continuous lamp. That 100,000 is only ~8.5 F-stops more than 250W, b.t.w.
    And whilst the W.s only indicates how much energy is used by the electronic circuit in the flash, we need a guide number at an angle without too much vignetting. Profoto says at ISO 100 this puppy does 72.5 > f/14.5 at 5ft or f/11 at 2m - not so powerful. A Nikon SB-910 has ft Gn of 111 at the flash angle for a 35mm focal length lens. But a beautiful pedigree puppy it is.
