Well I own both the Profoto B1, B2 and 2 AD200 (that I bought later) and for me, the price difference is justified. Out in the field, lightstands fall all the time, sandbags or not. The Profoto gear is built to last, my B1 has resisted the most horrible falls, and man that light falls hard. One AD200 already died because of this. Second, if you use TTL for convenience, you're going to love Profoto's TTL implementation for both Sony and Nikon gear. Godox doesn't get it right, and in the case of Sony, it underexposes a few stops if you shoot at an aperture wider that f/4. That's a known issue that's rarely mentioned. It is my idea that we are heading or if not already arrived at the time when gear become disposable, example I have B1, B2, A1, which are all great tools, but very expensive. Now with the new B10, my guess is that the B2 has suffered a considerable drop in value, but hey its still a great light. As a hard working full time photographer I find it harder to justify the cost of these units, recently purchased a couple of Ad200 which do an amazing job and coupled with the new ST-IV Trigger at £60 or $60 which is an amazing trigger, it feels just as good if not better built than the profoto airsync which is almost 6 x the cost. The ST-IV offers more information with regard to output vs the Profoto. So I will not be adding to my light collection with this new B10. Going to spend and enjoy the money saved, while still taking the same photograph.
The single light comes in the same case as my Godox 200 😂😂😂 saying that I realise these lights are aimed at professionals who can probably write off the cost through tax, as an amateur I’m happy with Godox, great video and loved your review 👍🏻
As a photographer I understand the ingenuity behind the design and engineering, out of most strobe brands out there profoto is definitely the most beautiful in its simplicity and ease of use as well as high quality. But literally most people can not justify the $1600 price for ONE. You don’t need a Rolex to tell the time but goddamn it looks beautiful on the wrist :/
"one of the most exciting advancements in lighting that I've seen in years" OH REALLY? PLEASE. TELL ME MORE. So basically you're holding a bulky AD250 in your hand and try so sell it as if there is no AD200 on the market. I might be wrong but you desperately need money, am I right?
This will be more color accurate than the AD200. A better comparison will be the AD 400 pro which have color stable mode and is still cheaper, similar in formfactor and weight while being more powerful
AD400 PRO weighs 4.6lbs (2.1 kg) vs the B10 at 3.3lbs (1.5 kg) . The AD400 is bigger, but not by that much and it costs $649 vs $1595 from Adorama. I am really surprised that none of the big manufacturers have lowered their prices yet. I guess that Godox really isnt impacting the professional market that much yet.
That price is steep to say the least. In my opinion, even if you are already vested in the Profoto system, that is still a crazy expensive light that is just slightly more powerful than a couple of speedlights.
To compare the Profoto light with a speedlight you have to put a modifier to both, otherwise you're going to be fooled by the spread of light. Bare speedlights focus the light a lot. For example, if you compare the AD200 + speedlight head vs the AD200 + lightbulb at the same power level, the first one is going to give you 1.5-2 more stops of light measured at the center. If you use a softbox both give almost the same measured output. At 9:56 in your video, you can see that the lightspread is almost twice as big. If the intensity at the center is the same, that's only possible with more power.
Luis Diego Salas we will do these tests when we get home. The falloff from the speedlight was still much greater than the Profoto in these quick tests to where it was obvious the B10 was a stop or two more powerful. My go to test is a beautydish though since it can eat a lot of light up.
Lee! You were in my back yard and didn't say "hi." :) On a side note from all the bickering about the light, this video was shot at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska. Stunning location a short drive south of Anchorage. One of the best keep secrets for skiing and a beautiful hotel. Come visit. You won't be disappointed as a photographer.
Hey +Fstoppers - Thanks for this review. I read a bunch of comments below while I was less than halfway through the video. Then I continued watching and saw that you guys gave an accurate and honest review. You stated that (although you didn't have a light meter with you) it didn't seem they were equivalent to the output of 5 speedlites. You stated that the Profoto Air remote system doesn't have two-way communication with the B10, and requires looking on the back of the B10 to see what the power level is. You acknowledge that these units are expensive and not for everyone. For all the people slamming the video, they're missing the point. This was a review, not a comparison between the B10 and (insert other brand here), it was a very fair review. Thank you!
This is as large as an AD400pro while being only a little bit more powerful than the AD200, while being 3-5 times more expensive. People will be buying this though, just as people will buy 1500$ new iPhones.
Patrick Hall it was much more quiet than D1 and a little bit more quiet than b1. I thank i will not diaturb during videoshooting. Fan was turning on after shooting with flash, not the continous light as I remember, but it was month ago.
THANK YOU for showing me how to get to the menu! I don't read user guides either -- jeesh!!! btw, the tiny knob is hard to tighten/loosen for tightening the head position, and the plug-in for the cord is hard to get at -- my thoughts. Thanks again!!
Profoto’s price is simple. Besides being reliable and ruggedly built, they are dead simple to use! They get out of the way of photography, all while being a flexible and intuitive extension of your camera. Brilliant!!! For some unfathomable reason, other flash companies haven’t discovered simple! Why, I do‘no, third base!
with 2 speed-lights you can cross light (which you can't with one light :-) and if one fails you still have the other. If you want two of these then you need to carry two gear-bags (speedlights can fit in your one bag). And if you have only one B10 and it fails no light whatsoever. Plus this costs is 5+ speed-lights/led lights as the presenter suggests. If you have modifiers/stands that's a third bag to carry around :-) So clearly this whole set up is for larger-scale pro work; where you have at least 3 people on a 'shoot'. This idea of filming and photographing at the same time is also oversold. In a wedding situation you have one person doing the video and they have their own light and one or two photographers each with their own light. It beats me how you can use the same light through-out for film and video if you are doing a wedding. Not even in film sets they do that. They prepare each set with its own light and then film photography has no light of its own but goes off the filming light. But a wedding is a fluid event (not a film set) you cannot stop the process between 'scenes' to set up/alter the lights. You set them once (and this may not always be possible) and you hope for the best :-) So it pays if you are a 3-person team (e.g. 1 video, 2 photo) to be able to alter the light at the individual level.
Great review, good product, terrible price. What I love about my Profoto lights is the protruding flashtube, it fills a beauty dish and strip light much better. I'm not sure I'm willing to give that up for this feature set, though I'm open to it, given that I bought Aputure 120s for video.
Thank you for the review. I bought the B10 but they don't have apps for Android devices users. Why? If they are planning to release one when? Why companies they always delayed apps for Android? Do they have special agreement with Apple. When you think they( profoto) will release A1 for Sony? Please help me with these questions Thank you
Profoto really aren’t getting it, the days of them being able to charge insane prices for their gear is long gone, Godox is killing them in terms of innovation and doing it at a price that normally users can afford. The AD200 is smaller, better shaped, only slightly less powerful and way more versatile
My point is that those competitors have now caught up and certainly in terms of innovation, overtaken Profoto, yet Profoto keep going on blindly as if nothing has changed. How can a company like this release a unit that cannot, at the time of release be controlled from the remote, you have to get your phone out and connect to the strobe via bluetooth. This is insane.
A light is a light, people usually pay for quality, reliability, and and convenience. Companies like profoto don't expect to sell to every one. You can control it from the remote. the phone gives you more options. its the only strobe with a decent power light and a way to change the white balance on the modeling light. They would have to make a new remote.
Pretty sure that the B10 is not much smaller than the Godox AD400PRO, which is almost a stop more powerful, it is way bigger the the AD200 which is barely less powerful and it lacks the flexibility of the AD200 and the AD200/400 are fully controllable from the remote.... Which leaves the fact that you can change the white balance of the modelling light as the major selling point. I get that you love Profoto, and that's cool, but you have to acknowledge that the B10 does not represent anything new or amazing, and price wise it is ridiculous.
Regarding the mains operating! According to the Profoto rep who I was talking to yesterday, I mentioned the mains operation feature. I was told that's its not recometed it more of a get you out of a hole feature. I hope he was wrong..
It is built from plastics, just like a tank :):) Quick question, is the output consistent at 11fps , power level 6.5 or 7? I have 1BX and it cannot do that. It fires all right, but the power output is all over the place. Thank you!
I see everyone dissing the B10 in favour of the Godox AD-200... so, can someone confirm whether the Godox does studio (constant) lighting or flash only? If the Godox doesn't do constant lighting, it is no good to videographers at all, regardless of its favourable pricing.
the Glossa channel: as a pro photographer/cinematographer i would 100% prefer an Ad200 and 2 Aputure 120d for professional video than spend that money on one flash light that comes with continuous light as an add on
I bought a couple of Godox AD200 with the AD-B2 and softbox for way less than the prices shown here with twice the power and full TTL & HSS controlled wirelessly from camera !! - How can they justify the pricing ??
Hi, two comments on the video: I would recommend recording the video without sunglasses. It looks cool but takes away from the communication between you and your audience. Also if you mention the iOS app let us know if there is one for android too! Furudal
Seems pretty versatile however I am sure I am not the only one saying this but that price could be a real deal breaker for alot of people. I can see it maybe and that's a big maybe if you already have invested in alot of there other products that can work with this light but even then you almost have to have a cooperate credit card to pick these up and like you said there are much more budget friendly options on the table. Thank you so much for sharing and cheers
Darc 1027 Do you go on a Ferrari or Porsche website and complain about price also or do you admire the engineering it takes? When they talk about the Zeus’s Otus lens do you marvel at the image quality or complain that your nifty 50 1.8 can take the same image. Profoto B10 is tool, nothing more or nothing less. If it is not for you, then so be it, but for a lot of people, it will be.
sixteenhunfreddollars/AND IT COMES IN A REALLY COOL SOFT CASE WITH A ZIPPER. Nice save?!? Great video! You guys are my go-to for all things photography!
the price is worth it for the workflow. no one is arguing godox doesn't work, but the ease of operation and a hassle free shoot helps you be professional. when you can rent other lights you could never afford to supplement these and its just plug and play, works with the modifiers you already have, is available world wide, its worth the price. if you don't think your business is worth investing a couple of thousand $$ you've got bigger problems than value for money
Yeah for sure, buy the 400$ trigger without two way communication so in the video he said he has to ask the assistant to show him the light's screen from time to time. Worth it for the workflow for sure.
I don’t know why people complain about the price ,, it’s main consumer would be a professional photographer who doesn’t have an issue with the price because they know what they are getting for it .. profoto clearly knows there are other alternatives but they don’t care because they know who they are marketing for ( for the people who don’t care about the price )
Its funny to watch the comments on youtube vs real life. I dont think youtube watchers make up a very high percentage of Profoto's customer base. Most people on youtube, myself included, are still at the Godox level.
I mean many pros watch these to see a product and learn about it. that's what i watched it. Not come here and make a bunch of comments and hate. I comment though but that's because I am a wild man and say what I gotta say. I am not trying to get all technical but I understand and agree with where you are coming from.
Lee, thank you for your review. Great stuff, as usual. I see that you used the TTL-S trigger, for Sony, which is the same one I use. For some reason I always have to ensure that the trigger is inserted all the way through in the hot shoe, or it will misfire. Other than that, it is rock solid. Looking forward to a review of the Profoto B10 vs. the Fiilex p360 for video.
Godox ad200 or ad400 on comparison tests more than match the output and quality of light of Profoto, only real difference is price and snobbery factor.
Light is light. Expensive and cheap lights = Same quality output. The only difference with lights are colors. Nothing more. $1600 is way overpriced and ripped off.
A Profoto maybe more expensive then those cheap lights from China but you have to consider the service life. I have a battery powered monolight that looks very much like a Profoto B1 and I also have two B1 location kits. The B1 look alike has already been replaced with less then a 5 months of service while the B1's just keep working. First day I had the B1 I used them to light action in a gym, fired off 1200 images in less then 2 hours, they never missed a beat.
Also to add, this video in one part didn't make sense. He says "I've been told that the remote and the flash do not actually communicate with each other, it's just sending signals to the flash". But to contradict this, he said previously that the remote DOES tell you when you have reached the highest or lowest output. So yeh - that didn't make any sense. This is an important subject, and it will put me off buying a set of two of these strobes as I've become very accustomed to my Canon wireless EX trigger showing me exposure (manual and TTL) on the camera for each flash group.
Finally - I found this review good because it actually showcases the product. I don't really think, as a professional photographer, these strobes are for me as the money seems to go towards bluetooth and other silly forms of connectivity over and above what I'd consider basic functionality, like not having to ask my assistant what the number on the side of the flash is. Even if the remote could show me the realtime setting on the flash, I don't want to pay a premium for technology like Bluetooth in a flash, no thanks. Not unless there really is nothing of a similar quality and spec on the market.
Lee.. Can you do some tests on power output vs. the B1X. Some of the other people that were at the Alaska event are saying that there is only 1/3 stop difference between the two at full power! That's insane! I just bought the B1X kit, and if this is true I would much rather give up 1/3 stop in exchange for this smaller light. A full stop is another story tho, especially here in Miami, sun with HSS. So.. I am gasping for someone to has access to both lights to make a quick, comparison video. On my knees begging LOL. Please! :-)
Travis Harris Photography look up “Profoto B10” on RUclips and you will find a video by Michael Anthony. He was on the trip and he does a test in his video. We will do a test tomorrow and see but we don’t own a light meter.
@@phaskellhall for sure! Yeah I saw his video, he's the one who told me. I'm wondering if you can tell me, with the same softbox on, what the real world difference is. Don't even bother with a meter. I don't own one either lol. I just wanna get an idea of power difference etc. Also to see how well it holds up in hss mode VS the b1x. I have about 4 days left till I can't send back my b1x kit. Hoping someone can help 😁
Woke up this am with a comment on another post I have going.. I'm told to rather then look at the bare blub power vs one another, to put the light in a modifier. So, if you can.. use that 2' beauty dish you have.. and see about power output vs the B1x. Also, if you can.. try in HSS (especially at the faster shutters) and see if one has an advantage over the other in that regard. I just can't believe that this is only 1/3 of a stop difference than the B1X.. yet all of the output specs on Profoto's site say its a full stop different when using the Magnum Reflector. A one stop difference is basically twice as powerful, and this would make more sense. Finger crossed you can do a test soon so I can decide either way, so I can send back the B1X kit if needed. Patrick, your a life saver man.. truly are.
So been reading a lot of comments on the crazy pricing for Profoto stuff! I agree......... BUT I have to sat that since I dropped the bank on my B2 unit which was a total upgrade from the other off camera units that I had especially with the reality of the air remote Then I dropped another truck load of cash for a $1000 A1 unit which I thought was WAY to much for just a speed light BUT I have to say that having these two Profoto units working together all controlled with the Air remote has again uped my game again and the lighting quality I'm creating every time I go out is so Friggen good! Yes I wish the cost of these units was less but There system although expensive is Really Friggen Good! I'm presently torn on getting a B1X with 500watts or a super light third light being a B10 Just saying that all this expense gives pretty amazing lighting!
It is definitely good product, that can replace my two 60GN speed lights and compact video light (250$ all together). But single unit is not suitable for professional work, so it is good as additional light to existing B1 or you will need to buy set of two B10.
Can anyone explain to me why Profoto always uses focused light? Why don't they use a normal ring-flash bulb that fires in all directions? No matter the diffusion or modifier you will always have a big hotspot in the middle where as a ring-bulb does not.
PbVeritas I don’t think this affects the quality of light at all when you use a soft modifier. Look up the video we did on the Profoto glass dome. You tech can see a difference if you expose for the softbox but not on your subject.
Interesting video! But to be fair: You tested in a way where it barely makes any difference. A beauty dish and a octa straight across will not have a huge impact on the light. A narrow strip light on the other hand will have a huge difference in lighting. I tried it out myself and had 3 stops of light loss from the center to the top and bottom with a recessed light where as the light dome only had 1 to 1.5 stops. It really depends on what kind of lighting you are using but pointing a recessed light straight at a object is not the way I want my photos lit. But you are right, it is by far not as a big of a deal as anyone makes it out to be.
Don't forget the additional $419 for the remote! That's $50 more than a Godox AD200 and Xpro remote.

The single light comes in the same case as my Godox 200 😂😂😂 saying that I realise these lights are aimed at professionals who can probably write off the cost through tax, as an amateur I’m happy with Godox, great video and loved your review 👍🏻
Do you know how writing off stuff works? Also you can do that as well with the Godox, no reason to choose profoto.
Its a free world choose whatever you want and pay what you want :-)
Simon Anderson in that case i would like to pay 20$ for the b10
zoel haha if you find one let me know and I’ll order a few 😂😂😂
sure thing! i'll let you know :)
I watched for fun,at 1600k I can buy Main, fill and hair lights for my studio and also buy two for my on-location shoots. All Godox Ad200.
😅😂🤣🤣🤣
Nice mosquitoes
Have been waiting since the profoto B10 released for fstoppers to cover it
Best review up till now 👌👌
No one has covered the things that Lee did 👏 😍
BTW Godox has a new round head for AD200 and you can combine two AD200 for a 400W light. hummmmm all for a price ~700 half of a B10.
"one of the most exciting advancements in lighting that I've seen in years"
OH REALLY?
Never used the AD400 pro. Does it come in continuous light and can be charged while in use?
Nice, I can't wait!
Superb video, thank you. Comparison to Flashpoint AD200? or the 400?
Welcome to Alaska!!! Hope your experience was amazing!!!
Martin Zhang agreed. Dummies everywhere.
Right, and most of those people will be very happy with their purchases. So what's the problem there?
Q: What does it cost to buy a RUclipsr's soul in 2018?
A: A trip to Hawaii or Alaska.
At this price point I can't believe that the air remote doesn't display the power of the flash heads!
Great review and I'm excited to add this to my B2's and B1X's.
When I was shooting in Dubai with B10, fan was turned on almost all time, but there was more than 40 Degrees Celsius.
Jakub Kaźmierczyk how loud was it? Could you film videos with it without ruining your sound?
Patrick Hall it was much more quiet than D1 and a little bit more quiet than b1. I thank i will not diaturb during videoshooting. Fan was turning on after shooting with flash, not the continous light as I remember, but it was month ago.
like how he brushes over the prices really quick with the "really cool soft case" laughable
For sure it is very handy & nice for those who has plenty dosh in their pockets !
Now that Lee finally shaved his head. I’m officially a fan.
Great sponsored video
Straight up ad, let's be real lol
I use profoto and their stuff is great.
Agree, he'd buy a godox or paul c buff instead
Great tutorial & review thanks
overpriced AD200?
Godox AD200 and their controller tells you the power output of each light. Not sure why people are still buying this stuff.
The best way to get an honest review of a piece of gear is to wait for the new one to come. Not everything was really "that great" in the last one.
with 2 speed-lights you can cross light (which you can't with one light :-) and if one fails you still have the other.
Please help me with these questions
Thank you
Way too expensive for a 250ws flash
Hi , based on your experience... is it recommended for interior/ architecture Photography? Specially during light paint with beauty dish ?
Profotos the apple of the lighting world.
Thanks for this review!
Plz what is the battery range with continuous light ?
Battery range? The battery last 1 hour with the continuous light.
$1600 but don't worry, it has a nice soft case
4:13 - It's made of really good plastic!
And if you buy two, well, you get no discount. But you do get a different really nice soft case.
I love that zipper.
These sounded great until the price. Was expecting 800 not double that.
Profoto really aren’t getting it, the days of them being able to charge insane prices for their gear is long gone, Godox is killing them in terms of innovation and doing it at a price that normally users can afford. The AD200 is smaller, better shaped, only slightly less powerful and way more versatile
Profoto always had cheaper competition from aliens bees to just a yongnuo flash on stand with an umbrella. What's your point
Like I said expensive reliable products isn't everyone's cup of tea.
Thank you!
I just chocked on my coffee when you said $1600 😆😆😆😆 I’ll stick with my rotolight neo 2 for $300
How much!!!!!!!! NO WAY
I see everyone dissing the B10 in favour of the Godox AD-200... so, can someone confirm whether the Godox does studio (constant) lighting or flash only? If the Godox doesn't do constant lighting, it is no good to videographers at all, regardless of its favourable pricing.
the Glossa channel: as a pro photographer/cinematographer i would 100% prefer an Ad200 and 2 Aputure 120d for professional video than spend that money on one flash light that comes with continuous light as an add on
You convince me, to buy the Godox AD200 for $300, thanks!!
Yeah, and the Profoto remote costs about $400.
Thanks for your Review. In flash! mode is there a constant modeling light available to help focus in dim lit environments?
I bought a couple of Godox AD200 with the AD-B2 and softbox for way less than the prices shown here with twice the power and full TTL & HSS controlled wirelessly from camera !! - How can they justify the pricing ??
Hi, two comments on the video:
I would recommend recording the video without sunglasses. It looks cool but takes away from the communication between you and your audience. Also if you mention the iOS app let us know if there is one for android too!
Furudal
5 years later and their price is still crazy 🤯
ProFoto lost me at $1,600
HSS available top to bottom or just at the top 3 stops ? thank you
Thanks, great review.
Haha: ruclips.net/video/qa1_i3Re63M/видео.html
I don’t know why people complain about the price ,, it’s main consumer would be a professional photographer who doesn’t have an issue with the price because they know what they are getting for it .. profoto clearly knows there are other alternatives but they don’t care because they know who they are marketing for ( for the people who don’t care about the price )
Hey Stevie. What's up with the shades?
kudos on keeping it together with all the bugs! 😂😂 I would have put this off for another time!
Its funny to watch the comments on youtube vs real life. I dont think youtube watchers make up a very high percentage of Profoto's customer base. Most people on youtube, myself included, are still at the Godox level.
The internet has a huge segment of people that disrespect anything popular or expensive compared to what they are used to.
From what I can tell most fulltime pro togs are busy making money instead of hanging out watching youtube photographers flog new products.
I have to disagree ERIK. We watch videos we just dont sit here and hate as much.
I said most, that doesnt mean every fulltime pro :) So even if you watch a lot of RUclips it doesnt invalidate my statement. I could be wrong though.
I mean many pros watch these to see a product and learn about it. that's what i watched it. Not come here and make a bunch of comments and hate. I comment though but that's because I am a wild man and say what I gotta say. I am not trying to get all technical but I understand and agree with where you are coming from.
I'd love to see a comparison to our beloved Godox AD200 lights.
Apparently the magnums reflector really helps with power output.
Profoto is the Apple of photography. Take a $200 light, slap a Profoto logo on it, and BAM!!! its now a $2000 light.
Last time I checked Apple is the highest valued company in the world. If Profoto is following behind them, I would say they’re on the right path :)
The Apple fanboi has arrived. LOL
Louis Ballz lol I call it how I see it. Overpriced or not, doesn’t make my last statement less true.
And a Fandroid is here as well. LOL :P
Nice Lee. It looks rad
How do the compare to the ROTOLIGHT series ?
Dude! great review what's up with the new chrome dome haircut, it's cool buddy! 😀👍
Can you please do a review of the Canon EL-1 speedlite? You do such a tremendous job with your reviews
Amazing design and way out of my league.
That’s a extreme price
What sunglasses do you have? I like them
Also to add, this video in one part didn't make sense.
Is there going to be a profoto a1 for Sony??????
Finally - I found this review good because it actually showcases the product. I don't really think, as a professional photographer, these strobes are for me as the money seems to go towards bluetooth and other silly forms of connectivity over and above what I'd consider basic functionality, like not having to ask my assistant what the number on the side of the flash is. Even if the remote could show me the realtime setting on the flash, I don't want to pay a premium for technology like Bluetooth in a flash, no thanks. Not unless there really is nothing of a similar quality and spec on the market.
This video really highlights the level of Mosquito's and bugs, wherever you are at.
Did he say $1600 each? Are they for real?
I’m in love!
Ok so, I'm hoping Aputure makes a counter to this ... similar size & features but cheaper.
Patrick, your a life saver man.. truly are.
Did you guys have a chance to do any tests today?
Great review.
So been reading a lot of comments on the crazy pricing for Profoto stuff! I agree......... BUT I have to sat that since I dropped the bank on my B2 unit which was a total upgrade from the other off camera units that I had especially with the reality of the air remote
Then I dropped another truck load of cash for a $1000 A1 unit which I thought was WAY to much for just a speed light
BUT
I have to say that having these two Profoto units working together all controlled with the Air remote has again uped my game again and the lighting quality I'm creating every time I go out is so Friggen good!
Yes I wish the cost of these units was less but There system although expensive is Really Friggen Good!
I'm presently torn on getting a B1X with 500watts or a super light third light being a B10
Just saying that all this expense gives pretty amazing lighting!
So expensive this Profoto B10 Light.
It is definitely good product, that can replace my two 60GN speed lights and compact video light (250$ all together).
But single unit is not suitable for professional work, so it is good as additional light to existing B1 or you will need to buy set of two B10.
log0log it is part of a set, you never just have one.
3200$ for 2x250W... probably not the best investment
