Whatever happened to Balcar? As a retired studiio photog we used Bron. If I may take up some valuable time and space, one of the reasons I decided on the Broncolor system was during a 4 year working stint in India my 404 power pack died on me. Whether it was the result of rough transportation or the killing humidity of the subcontinent is beyond the scope of this little diatribe. To cut a long story short (and remember that this was before email was a thing) I was in correspondence with Broncolor in Switzerland. The generator was out of warranty. Yet Broncolor shipped me a new circuit board plus the relative diagrams free of charge and I had a local electronics whiz friend of mine in Bombay do the necessary repairs and I was, once again in business. It speaks volumes for the company. P.S. Those post human malware photographs...stunning, Hugh. I spent a good 15 minutes pausing, rewinding and pausing again. 👍
I started my commercial career with Balcar. Great lights. I got sponsored by Dynalite and made a long career with those. Went through tons of lights from Norman (first ever) when I worked at the Getty Museum. I even bought some speedatron (brown). For rentals I always went to Profoto since all the assistants around the world knew the system. I also kept the dynalites as my primary system since I shot girls for a living and back 25 years ago using 20 lights was the way we shot. Pretty easy to guess where I worked.
I am with Broncolor for my photography. I have a small Studio here in Austria. With Broncolor flashes and some light shapers. One of the light shapers is a Broncolor Para 133. I highly reommend to try one out. I hat no idea how beautiful the light looks. Defocused its a soft light with very dark shadows. Textures almost jump out of the picture everything looks 3D. It is just amazing. This tools are expensive but they are worth the money!
Everybody ignores the Profoto B2, which didn't sell, and sells for dimes on the dollar used now. As a pack and head system, you can use the pack as the weight on the bottom of your stand while the head which weighs almost nothing, is up top. Or an assistant can carry the 2-3 pound pack on their shoulder while they carry the head with/without a modifier using their hands. It's the most practical battery system ever, which is probably why nobody bought it. I had some B1s which I sold as I felt they were too heavy for an assistant to haul all day, and too heavy at the top of a small stand. The only drawback is 250WS, but that actually works pretty well in the real world.
Thanks for mentioning (and thereby intoducing me to) Lois Greenfield: her work is amazing. A bit over a year ago, I decided to get a pair of Siros L's. They are perhaps slightly heavy when you put them on a boom stand, but totally reliable and easy to work with. Super tough as well: one blew over on a stand right onto the concrete once. Only had a small scratch :-). But your suggestion to get an assistant is better ;-)
For what it's worth, I've had my 800Ls blow over on 6' high stands no less than 3 times! Once in a Kale field (no assistant), once in a park onto hard sod (assistant was texting... :-/), once onto a picnic table (don't ask... and no assistant). I've also had one fall in the studio from a C-stand mounted boom arm. A few scuffs to the finish, but no damage to the lights from any of the falls. These incidents resulted in me adding a 1200L Move kit to my Broncolor system. The Move pack is ever so slightly more awkward, but the Mobiled flash heads are waaaaay more stable on tall stands. I still have the Siros 800L heads and I love them!
@@EdAb Hahaha, good to read I'm not alone ;-) Since then, I've managed to break off one of the flash tubes because I didn't double-check the 120x180 softbox was really secure. Still no assistant of course, lol. I think an assistant might actually have been cheaper..... Unless they text all the time of course ;-)
@@filibertkraxner305 I lost a tube too... while removing an octagon! My first thought was, "this wouldn't happen with ProPhoto". Now, after more than four years of use, I think the broken bulb has less to do with the Broncolor mount and more to do with my unfamiliarity with system at the time.
It's 1st about proportional modeling light, 2nd about the exposed flash tube on the head, 3rd about speed and consistency. 1- shows you what you're doing before a shot and prevents pupils from getting too dilated, 2- improves options of modifiers especially the focusing real parabolas, 3- first time right.
As an amateur, I really couldn't justify the use of Broncolor, et al, so I have been using the Godox system, particularly the AS600 BM. I think the brand represents great value and it has never let me down. I have recently moved to continuous lighting for studio work, but the monolights are still needed for outdoor work.
Very informative, relative to product benefits and alternative options. I’m not a pro photographer, but I watch your vids as entertainment. Each is reminiscent (in staging, lighting and your “acting”) of a one-person Broadway show. You’re onto something here: a professionally staged and presented video...can’t believe you’ve never acted professionally, however. Also can’t believe you’re headquartered in Paoli, PA!? of all places. Quite a CV (Wharton). Even your pledge segments are done with finesse. Sorry to say, you’ve turned me into a fan boy. Keep up the exceptional photography equipment series, quite watchable and entertaining.
I have been using portable strobes since about 2008, generally at the time, inspired by the work of Joe Mcnally. They can be great but also a huge pain because of the time it takes to set up and in windy conditions, can be a bit of a nightmare. Generally, now though I have a completely, portable studio setup, which allows me to do pretty much any shoot anywhere (last Tuesday, I was doing studio headshots in a wood). Unfortunately, I ran out of time to do the environmental portraits, which I was also going to do, which is a downside, because it takes so much time to set up when shooting without an assistant. As for cheap vs expensive portable strobes. This is a big issue, which has already had a dramatic effect on the industry. I bought the Bowens X-MT500, just months before they went bust at substantially more expense than the Godox equivalent model (Apparently the Bowens XMT500 was actually made by Godox). So many photographers are moving to the cheaper models and whilst I am not sure it will have a huge effect on Broncolor, I do think that it will have an effect on Profoto and Elinchrom over the next few years.
I loved this but I have a question i shoot with the Q2 and the CL I use Godox but I want smaller more precise lights for product and portrait work. Do these play well with Leica? I currently use a Nikon trigger now. Love your work!
Thank you for the great video! I’m hoping Leica and Profoto will get on the same page so the Leica SL2 (& Q2) can get HSS with the profoto system. I would imagine Leica hadn’t paid attention to studio lights because of their street photography history, but the SL2 (and I’d imagine S3) really should change that thought process. I use my SL2 with two B10 heads, but on sunny days need to use a ND filter or stop down, which isn’t always ideal. Hopefully this gets resolved and profoto announces a Leica trigger 🤞🏻!
Many thanks!! And many thanks for your videos; they were very helpful and enjoyable to watch while contemplating what camera to pursue so my trusted 5d mark ii could enjoy a well deserved retirement. Flash options somehow remained in my blind spot during this entire process, so now I'm weighing my options for the sl2, besides leica's apparently rebranded nissin speedlights. Any suggestions you think are worth considering - other than the profoto ones would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!
Hugh, this is visual and aural poetry. I love the perspective and context you've always imbued your work with, yet even more now with your longing for the bustling NYC reflecting my own feelings on missing the central part of my home city, London.
Enjoyed this very much; Broncolor, ProPhoto, and Elinchrome ARE great choices. Due to budget constraints (amateur, limited opportunity to use the gear, needs at this time) another brand is what I bought. But everything you mentioned applies and should be used with strobe or speedight photography. Well worth the time to view-- Thanks.
I work pretty much exclusively with Godox flashes. I've used the V1 in many different situations and love the output and consistency I get. I've got a pair of GS400 in my studio. And I've got an AD200 Pro for everything in between. And the whole system sync up wirelessly. Also, for the price of one Profoto light and mod, you can get completely kitted out and then some with Godox. But that's my $0.02 YMMV
I use the Elinchrom Ranger RX for outdoor work all of the time. Its a battery operated system and they call it portable (its heavy), but it does a fantastic job...
I bought my 550EX I think one year after you did and I still have it, it's patiently sitting a few feet beside me waiting for its next shots, it is always and I mean always ready. Thirty seconds or less to green baby, just you wait. In contrast I bought a Godox, the V1 maybe and it is endlessly and I do mean endlessly disappointing. I could only get about 20 full power flashes, maybe 30 to 35 half power flashes before it suddenly wouldn't refresh and would stick in not ready. Not to mention the trigger may well have been designed by intentional sadists as its hyroglyphy rivals the Marquis de Shut yer Mouth for absurdity and just overall head scratching cruelty. Meanwhile the 550EX and its five year old rechargeable Eneloops is green ready to fire. But it won't flash sync boooooo whyyyyyyy. So I bought a Profoto B2 and a couple modifiers and basically every photo I take is like Michaelangelo himself blessed me with God's Sistine finger every shot is amazing. I took a picture of my thumb once just to check, poof yes it was a lovely thumb, the falloff and that accurate crisp color oof lemme do it again dammit perfect again hmmm how much do I wanna print of my thumb on the wall this is just gorgeous. It's really annoying that Profoto is so nice. I bet the Broncolor paras are even nicer than people say they are because I swear Profoto is one of those brands that you just don't complain about the price after you pay it. Don't get me wrong I complain plenty before hand. I mean four hundred bucks for a trigger? But wait it has like three buttons and it can do second curtain sync and it's not at all made by sadists like I don't feel gross or exploited even a little....hmm......
That godox V1. You can hammer the Profoto A1 and it will keep firing full-power flashes at the same fast recycle until you've exhausted all of your batteries. The V1 has thermal protection (as does Canon and Nikon) and you'll get about 10 full-power flashes before it starts slowing down, and does it ever slow down. The cure for your disappointment is to find a nearby river and pitch that V1 right into it. Good choice on the B2. The best battery system ever IMO.
Like this review, here I have something to say about technical flash output if is regarding HSS both unit are capable they are not so different. But you are adding the Hasselblad X1D 2 with this 2 unit you may have a problem this unit are created to properly function with a very slow flash burst so the T1 maybe at full power is at 1/250 sec or maybe just a bit higher not very well suited for leaf shutter I was able to sync X1D to 1/2000 sec using a Digibee ( Paul C Buff ) with their own transmitter and receiver with out any problems. I doubt this can be achieve with this unit properly. On the old profoto compact 600 the t1 1/900 sec full power much better then newer unit. For the Godox the T1 is only 1/200 sec not very helpful for leaf shutter. I’m not trying to teach anything but I have been very annoyed about this issue personally. I still prefer the full power of the flash, but HSS when doing a closeup or headshots on location is great for that out focus look. But as soon you try a full length that become a really issue. For the rest I agree with you that profoto as an edge with portability and mounting any devices. But both are overpriced if it is about reliability I will go with Profoto I used to own pro 5 pro 6 pro 7 compact 300 and 600 I still own them the other one sold them at a really good price.
