My cover of the live acoustic version of Neon by John Mayer from the album Where The Light is (Live in L.A). **This video isn't shot live in L.A :-D
#johnmayer #neon #wherethelightis
My god. This is flawless.
You should cover this too!
Oh youre here God
it's actually missing QUITE a few of the notes and progression on the scale mayer uses for this song. It's a very loosely but WELL captured rendition. It's a youtube video, not anything good.
Not really flawless, listen at 2:32
@@skaywalker20 yeah, he missed 3 notes at 2:34. I'm still correct and you prove you can't hear well enough to be a real musician.
This is how John Mayer learned this song.
*Bold comment*
Bold as love
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
Haven’t laughed so hard at a comment in a long time 😂. Honestly might be best laugh. 10/10 👍🏽. Keep up the good work and originality.
John did this while singing
The legend tells that one day a man would do an almost perfect neon cover, here it is
when does he say that?
I would like your comment, but you're at 420 likes :p
The only thing missing...john...
Well...I’d agree, but every cover I see always lacks one thing, the singing.
The sad thing it still lacks the lyrics.
I will never understand so long as I live how he can play this and sing it simultaneously and never skip a beat. Mayer is an absolute machine and it’s incredible.
Its easy to sing, once you've practised this song enough to play it this well, the fingers do the job by themselves singing over it is a breeze
@@Ash-fm6ym then you do it
@@AnxiousSoul he is saying that learning the songs itself on the guitar is hard but not the singing part, not that its easy.
His true genius is time. John Mayer is a master of time. For him singing over this is nothing.
@@Ash-fm6ym no it isnt. Doesn't matter how well you know it, singing over it makes it even more difficult. Don't pretend like you have any idea.
What's even more insane than how good this cover is, is the fact John Mayer plays this while singing... insanity.
Yup
Mayer also plays it in one take, live, without editing after the intro. It really is insane.
People confuse difficult guitar parts as also being hard to sing over. Thre are way "simpler" guitar parts that are absolute nightmares to sing over because of the counter rhythms needing to be juggled.
Not a guitar song (although I've made an arrangement myself), but brick by Ben folds five sounds simple to sing over but it's insanely hard.
This is perfect. Just perfect!!
Yes

haha
I don't think anyone can ever truly replicate another guitarist's lick, because that artist puts so much of themselves into it and no one can ever truly emulate another that well. This is as close as anyone will ever get to John's Live In LA rendition of Neon. I tip my hat off to this brother that not only played it well, but played it as himself.
Fully agreed
ivan hunter would love to know what you think of my 16 year old grandsons live version of this at open mic last night. Would really appreciate your opinion ruclips.net/video/W2dmLkOjrJE/видео.html

Thank you all so much for your amazing comments! :) So glad you've been enjoying the video! :) For anyone who wants to learn this song I uploaded the lesson to my website here:bit.ly/3qZPYCs I will warn you though, this song is not for beginners... and just so you know... your patience is gonna feel like it's squatting a 200kg barbell on a tightrope the day after leg day... with one leg... while crying... and someone is tickling you... Brace yourself :-D
This comment made my day, and I think your lessons will be on my wish list for Xmas.
Lol
Hands down the most accurate replication. Period. Thanks for showing us where the light is Jamie!
zaykayree seriously. This guy is so crazy legit. Mimic’s Mayer’s crazy right hand slap/picking too
Paul Davids' is up there too
Jano Mendoza I’m a big fan of Paul David’s and I’ve learned a lot from him but I always felt like for this song his right hand was too... loose... the finger picking was more like regular finger picking... it doesn’t have the same kind of pulsating drive as it should in my opinion, which Jamie has nailed here...
Thanks for the references guys! I’ll be sure to check them out!
Yeah Paul David’s is good coz it mentions the grace notes which I don’t think JM always plays live, but this is soooo crispy and delicious 👌Jamie ftw
This guy's got a pretty solid jacket game
Innit!
Ladies and gentlemen this is, indeed, the wet dream of every guitar player
I've listened to hundreds of different attempts at this song, and I've never once seen a cover of this that got the TRUE 'feel' of the song. Until now!!

Paul David's is also very goodd

This man is amazing. So far, I've purchased Little Wing, Bold as Love and Slow Dancing lessons and I must say it was worth my money. The quality and the attention to detail was exceptional in every lesson. I think these lessons are the fastest way to learn Mayer/Hendrix's style. These tracks can be challenging but Jamie make it as easy as it can be. If you really want to step up in your guitar playing, his video courses are probably the best way to go, so do not hesitate.
Thanks so much for posting that comment Alex! :) Really appreciate the kind words brother, and really glad to hear you loved the lessons ;)
Can confirm. You'll learn to play sweet songs and learn all the dynamics and "little tweaks" that makes them sound and feel AMAZING. And the man is irish, so you get to hear that crisp accent while learning - Surely that alone is worth the money
Looks easy 😏

I actually bought this lesson and it literally changed my life
You mean cause you had to study so hard that your life basically became Neon?
@@Stoffendous That’s me right now lol. I bought his lesson for neon and all I do all day is practice
Most youtube guitar teachers just learn songs so they can teach them. Jamie learned this so he could play it, and then graciously decided to teach it. There is a significant difference. This is perfect
that little intro groove is literally one of my favorite things ever
This is the only cover I could find that is as accurate and authentic as the original!! I decided to buy the lesson a few days ago and I am blown away by it!! I am having an absolute blast learning this song.
Cleanest Neon cover I've seen. Took many years for it to finally come. John Mayer, what a beast. And Jamie too, well played.

I just bought the lesson for this song from Jamie's site and I must truly say it is completely worth every penny. I'm not a beginner in playing guitar, but neighter a pro. I wasn't familiar with the picking technique john uses for this song, but Jamie explains it just perfectly, step by step. If you realy want to learn this song, Jamies lessons are by far the best thing you can find on the internet. It will take some time till i get used to this technique and maybe someday master it, but I got the best requirements
I never thought I'd be able to play this song until I purchased Jamie's course on Neon. Best cover and tutorial of this song on the internet; I highly recommend it.

Absolutely flawless!
There is so much joy in just watching someone play the guitar so beautifully.
That bassline is GROOVY.
Yeah, that rocks quite a bit ;) and even more delightful with good headphones Gosh!
You are the best when it comes to John Mayer tutorials
Aside from the fact that this cover is mind-blowing, I can't take my eyes off the guitar
The tempo change from the grove section to the main rift was insane, slap technique is incredible, well done
I just bought this lesson 4 days ago and my thumb on my left hand now stretches an inch farther than my right hand. I'm still struggling to play it, but I've never gotten this far in playing this song ever before. I've unsuccessfully attempted just playing the main riff a few different times over the last 5 years, but now I can actually get by playing the whole song with non-guitarists. I have the parts down, now I just have to get it all to flow together more smoothly. I got the everything pack, and if the rest of the lessons are like this, it was well worth the money.
Just learned it by ear by slowing it down to .75 and watching those beautiful fingers do their thing. Thanks for the impeccable playing!
Not saying that I've watched this 30 times or anything, but...
I've watched this 50 times and added it to my playlist.
Many other versions are good but this is by far the best and cleanest version. You wouldn’t be able to tell that it wasn’t John Mayer if you didn’t know.
Well,I might be able to tell if its John Mayer or someone else based on the guitar tone.John always goes for Martin guitars whenever it comes to playing acoustic music : )

Jesus, you nailed the riff without dislocating your thumb!
I don't get what's so hard about the thumb thing.... just practice for like a couple days and it's more than flexible enough. I barely use my index finger to bar anything, always my thumb so it was pretty natural for me...
@@SatanClaus69 i think its not even an issue of the thumb its an issue of whether your fingers aare long enough or if your palm is big enough to wrap around the neck easier.
@@mdub2000 yeah, because I have no trouble with that lick, because I have very big hands, where as I know other guitar players who really struggle and change the finger placement up on some of the chords
@@trey_a yeah i have to do exactly that ......i mean i manage to do it but i can see how much easier it would be to play and sing if my thumb was wrapped around the whole time.
This was the most accurate version as far as I can tell. What makes me respect John Mayer even more is that he can do this AND sing at the same time. That guy is an alien

Hey Kevin!! Thanks so much for the review brother, I really appreciate you taking the time to do that and I am so glad to hear the courses helped you :-) I wondered if you might be able to copy and paste the review to trust pilot because it will get buried in the comments here and I’d love for other people to know your experience :-) only if you have a minute to do it, but it only takes a minute - you don’t have to set up an account or anything like that. Either way, thank you so much again and I hopefully will catch you soon 👊🏻👊🏻
Hey Kevin, thanks a lot for posting over on Trustpilot! :) Really appreciate that - However, I noticed it was only a 4 star review, and I just wondered is there anything we can do and improve so you would consider changing that to 5 stars? Unfortunately this drags down my average from a perfect 5 haha, so I like to keep as much of a 'clean sheet' as I can :) Let me know if I can do anything to make you feel like you received a 5 star service, not only 4 :)
@@JamieHarrisonGuitar There's been research that people tend to trust/actually read 4 starts over 5 stars due to fake reviews. Didn't mean to bring you down there - I fixed it to 5.
@@kevincorvallis Haha, wow, you're very well researched, fair play! I've actually read that before too and well done to you for thinking about that, but I know that Trustpilot has such a strong 'fake review' filter that I try and go with as high as possible (which is a clean 5.0*). That's kind of the point of the platform is that it's got the best filters for fake reviews, so I'm not sure if it applies in this case :) But I'm so thankful for all the time you've given to share your experience with others dude, and also for changing the stars! :) I didn't want to be annoying, but I also want to make sure that every student is fully satisfied or I'l return their money, so just was making sure that you were 100% happy :) Thank you so much! :)

Jamie plays this very well, it is impressive. But every time I watch one of these videos (this one made in 2019), I think of John Mayer creating this song when he was younger, over 10 years ago, then playing it perfectly, live, while singing, as his first song. And here we are, admiring Jamie because he can play it (with all due reason, he does an amazing job)... do you think JM even thinks about this performance anymore?
Wow. Crushed it as usual. Your lessons are basically guitar heaven. Stoked to try this one!
How Jamie Harrison makes a video:

Step 2.) Play some John Mayer
Step 3.) Upload and win all the women (and men)

The only thing missing from the original version is a Martin...other than that, this is spot on! Great work!
well that Martin Stagecoach is 11 grand. This Taylor is probably like a 600 or 800 series. Considerably less and affordable at a mere 4 grand haha
Well, John uses the Stagecoach for the Born and Raised and Paradise Valley songs. He plays Neon on the OMJM. The original goes for like 10-12K and the regulars go for like 3-4K. The Stagecoach goes for like 7K and is impossible to play neon on that one since it has a huuuuuuge neck.

this is absolutely fucking incredibel. John Mayer sings this, with that voice, coming out of his face, whilst also doing this. complete alien

Love the way you play and how you teach the song we love to play. I already enrolled this Neon, Gravity, my next is the slow dancing. Great player best teacher! Now I can play like Mr. Mayer! 5 star for this man!
So I've spent about 20 hours learning the main melody and here is what I have learned: YOU NEED to play the strings with only your thumb and index finger, as Jamie does here. I tried to cheat and do finger picking, but it just doesn't have that same percussive effect. Also try to play the chords as shown in the video, using your thumb, you get used to the stretch after a while, ultimately using your thumb increases the speed.
