What was the most useful tip you got from this video? What are you planning on doing with this tip?
The match maker seems like it forces 50/50 i have seen numerous pros say the match maker forces 50/50 necros, flats, chipsa etc. I have played overwatch for 6yrs and have noticed the same thing so much so that i can watch almost any stream and know when the player is going to lose and win bases off of their games. I also won $500 in a bet because someone told me it wasn't rigged and i predicted 40 games back to back. 9 times out of 10 if you win 1 game it will be followed by a loss. Win 2 loss 2 win 3 lose 3 etc etc and it should not be like that because if i play well in one game then the next game i also play well but i get a dps main who refuses to switch of genji or gets 3 elims all game that is just not right. The games are never balanced its always a complete stomp one way or another. If you look at any other games and their match makers they are almost always balanced matches where as overwatchs match maker is so predictable it becomes frustrating and it creates this toxicity in the community that is not good. i feel like blizzard made their match maker with the bare bones basics in programming. Overwatch is a great game but unfortunatly its basic trashcan match maker lets it down big time.
Idk a lot of this is stuff I already knew and yet here I am lmao
Gotta apply the knowledge!

Sleep, move & eat better
I am going to first and foremost work on my sleep habits! Then diet next
Spilo: "They will then eat nothing but salad and water for two or three days, and then wonder why they don't feel very good." Coluge during last Overwatch World Cup reference 😂
I don't comment on videos much...I see what spilo is doing. He's one of the good guys in gaming trying to change the culture and future of gaming for the younger generation. Focusing on things outside of games to improve one's life and still enjoy their competitive experience even possibly being professional. I hope this reaches more people.

Thank you Spilo. You've not only helped me improve at Overwatch one step at a time, but also improve by life bit by bit so that I can be the best version of myself. Your work for the Overwatch community is much appreciated.
So did you hit grand master and got a six pack cause of his vids or is it just me?
@@-MinMaxer im actually in the process of getting a six pack but I don't play overwatch as much anymore
You deserve wayyyy more subs bro, I’m not even grinding overwatch or nun I still watch these 😂
I like to think of habits as an addiction, I treat it as a drug addiction. If you just go cold turkey and go to another extreme, you will burn out or even possibly feel sick in the case of food. It’s all about little changes and keeping up those changes, one at a time. Eventually it will build up, just like it did as a child, it’s just easier then because you don’t have set habits yet when you’re still so young. It’s also similar to learning a new language, you condition your brain everyday without even realizing it, however being conscious about it truly gives some much needed clarity in all of us. If you keep chipping away slowly, you will be able to sustain yourself much more efficiently. If you just take a big swing at it with your hardest effort, you will feel a heavy amount of backlash from the hit. It’s good to put in effort, but work smart not hard.
Other than comparing it to an addiction (typically something frowned upon) you are exactly right. If cold turkey or New Years resolutions never work, it is really important to almost talk to/monitor yourself but to also be forgiving but aware that you both want to stop and continue and its a dichotomy.
People who want but struggle to diet, start and remember that you will stumble because it isn't your comfortable normal/habit.
For me I quit a couple physical addictions like smoking cold turkey. For diet I knew I couldn't do it like that because unlike smoking, drugs/drinking, gambling (not saying I was addicted to all these) food, unhealthy/apathetic comforts, and other daily routines can't just be hidden from like a cigarette.
If you mess up your diet try to mess up within 20% of calorie count, try to at least get back on the diet after eating that comforting food. Exercise for 5 minutes a day. If you can't break your habit to do that just do 2 mins a day, it feels silly but it isn't and like you said we are creatures of habits and most people/parents were never taught how to raise kids to build long term successful habits since they weren't taught it either.
Sorry for ramble I'm very interested in psychology and the broader socioeconomic effects on society as a whole.
This conversation is fantastic for just bettering oneself, doesn't even just apply to video games.
I really needed to hear this, thanks Spilo!
no offense, i think you should think of a different title for this video. this video should reach a lot more people than the niche of people who want to rank up in overwatch

I thank both of you so much! Knowing that "timeblocking" solves most issues in practice really motivates me to use that. I doubted myself.
Today is my first day with dedicated food time and it's so good. Eating healthier comes more natural with it.
This is crazy good timing, I'm working towards being a licensed clinical psychologist and was planning to ask you on stream about whether coaching in esports uses any theories or models from coaching/sports psychology when training players. Thanks for already answering
you should really collab with DR.K ("healthy gamer gg") yt channel. honestly it would be so interresting seeing a psychiatrist who knows a lot about people and gaming have a talk with a coach like you.

This is high quality content! Thank you, coach Short King and coach Martina!
I remember a specific lyric to a song that really got me.
"Toughest prison to break out is in your mind."
Is that from "you are stronger" from persona 5: scramble, or another song?

not to be over dramatic but this youtube channel has an immense positive influence in my life. thanks for doing what you do never stop
This video is really good! The title seems like an understatement somehow in my mind. I feel like I came expecting one thing and got something much better, and I think this could get more views if the title reflected the quality!

such a good and underrated video with so many good take aways thank you for uploading martina is clearly very knowledgeable
ah yes new spilo video, new ways to see what others lack after i learn about them
"Trash in, trash out." Got it!
such an interresting video. especially about the diet. i have started eating more before playing cus i feel like its better then being hungry before playing. but what i eat should be taken into consideration
Much love spilo, thank you for your work in the community. Any chance of a Venture guide? I love their kit, favourite hero release.
working on it!
@@StormcrowProductionsAwesome, she's my favorite hero so far (other than ball). The design and development team did an amazing job with them
I love that you are talking about this there aren't many that do. I just saw a karq reddit questions video where a dude was using hard drugs to get better at the game 😮 I will say that for me eating low carb helped my game improve immensely but I would again play horribly when I would break diet. Now that I am working out I can actually eat a burger or something every now and then and still play well.
I just love your content
Great video coach spilo! You should look up positive intelligence, it's a self helping psychological framework I've been studying recently that really resonates with the mindset stuff that she was speaking on in the second half of the video
Super informative chat, thank you both ❤
i thank you spilo
I have found i play almost 2x better if I went to the gym that day it just makes me feel better about everything.
^
This is does not explain the 2 ez wins, then unwinnable. Thanks for the great video and your time.
the new camera is good
Been reading The Art of Learning and man I swear spilos dad read it too
The thing is for people who are already doing these things, the chances of them needing to improve and prove themselves in Overwatch is low in the first place since they usually have things to do in real life and doing pretty well already
No time to go to the gym but time to play overwatch lol
Disclaimer, I only listened to the mental, because I have the other bases covered.
I feel like she spoke a lot, but didn't really say anything. For example, when she spoke about how you talk to yourself, you can boil everything she said for 10-15 minutes down into "yeah it happens". She gives no guidance on how to change the habit if you self depreciate or why it happens in the first place. Only explains that it exists and the different kinds of self talk that there is. She doesn't explain why it's negative besides two sentences "It determines your outlook on life". But goes on to immediately drop that line of thought entirely and continue to elaborate on the different kinds of self talk there are. "yeah negative self talk is bad and you shouldn't do it. Moving on"
Thanks. I really needed a certified sports psychologist to tell me that.
exactly why i didnt watch the video, ive noticed all they say is "it happens" and never how to fix it..
but what i learned when hitting rock bottom aka my rank. ive realized playing to learn my mistakes, instead of playing to win made me less toxic on myself and team.
im not saying im throwing but realizing why im dying, and what positions to take. instead of flamming my team is very beneficial to the mental state always being in a an angry state will leave you with a negative mental. which is why you should focus on simple things in game like your positioning instead of winning. people win and lose you cant always win so wouldnt try and force it. if you do a good play and think you played well dont be negative on yourself thinking you lost because you couldnt carry. losing and winning just happens weather you play good or bad
@@350oven4 you should've watched the video man, this is literally the first thing she talks about; growth mindset. don't know what this other guy is on about, she talks about so many different tools and ways of managing things and she's super quick and to the point about all of them, no waffling or repeating at all. it's still a youtube video, so generalized advice and not hyper specific to any specific person or style but if you listen there's a lot in there that's all really good.
@@cogginsnuff if i already explained what she talked about, i may not even need to watch it then lol
@@350oven4 I mean suit yourself, you clearly don't wanna watch it and no one is making you but she talks about more than that, it's pretty solid stuff
(29:30) when talking about mindset I realized I have a pretty negative one whenever I play. I play doomfist, I think he’s cool and I like the skill expression, and out of the 20 games I’ve played this season there hasn’t been a single game that I haven’t been countered by at least two people. After seeing that not only do I feel worse at the game because I’ll get hooked when I block then hacked and insta die half the time and just not know how I’m supposed to play around that, but my team tells me to swap and says I should uninstall. But I don’t want to swap, I just want to play the hero I like and work to improve, but it feels like I’m not allowed to do that without having a negative experience. I’ve always been a competitive person, and I really just can’t have fun playing quick play to the point where it feels like a chore to do, there’s no rank for me to work for and I can’t see a goal in it, but comp has gotten to the point that I get on and just feel like getting off before even playing a game. And honestly that just…sucks
same bro and im a genji 1 trick, im usually pretty chill i never say nun back
I wish someone explained this to me when I was 6 years old
@Spilo I do wonder how would you approach something like depression? I have taken a lot of action to improve my ability to combat my depression but when I get depressed I still play but it’s hard for me to identify that I’m actually depressed. I have had it so bad I went from top 150 to plat in 2 days and of course I went back up when the wave of depression is over but I find it hard to realize in the moment that I’m actually depressed.
The bird nest is looking pretty good today Spilo 👍
10/10 !
Well, the game won't get better with time, that's a hard truth.
Spilo, you should look up the Daniel diet. You should have heard of this, what with your bible verse on screen. Talk about it to your followers.
Also, anger is a secondary emotion, it comes from pain and fear. Whether that be pain of embarrassment, or fear of the teammates flaming you, etc.
isnt that the weird cult thing from donnie darko lol
@komossr uh I can't say as I haven't seen that movie. The Daniel diet is based upon a story in Daniel chapter 1, where a group of men were captured by the king of Babylon and forced into service, while being given food from the kings own table such as meats and alcohols. Daniel and his friends asked to be left out from these dietary choices, and the overseer was unwilling to allow that as he was worried about the king seeing them malnourished and killing him, so they asked to be given 10 days eating vegetables and drinking water for 10 days and compare whether they were healthy or not. After 10 days, the overseer saw they were more healthy than all the other kids eating the kings food, and so they were given permission to conduct their own diet.
@@BrambleJam i mean the weird two emotion thing
@komossr oh 😅 Well I heard this from a psych class in college and life skills classes over the years, so I'm not sure if it's in that movie, sorry.

Her gym advice is just purely wrong. If you're new to the gym, the first few weeks you may be tired, hungry, and underperforming. But after you adjust to the workload, you'll have a jump in performance. Most other things sound great though
it's not wrong, there are just different paths for different goals, if you wanna get jacked or lift big weights sure, but if you just wanna be healthier so you can play better overwatch she's right, there's no point pushing that hard. just because you will adjust doesn't mean you should or that it's worth the time and energy etc.
@cogginsnuff wrong. Being fit is far better for your mental health, rage and confidence. Hitting the gym 45min-1hr 3-5 times a week will have phenomenal benefits regardless. Being fit shouldn't be a path, it's part of your lifestyle. This lie has created the fat positivity movement and the ultra sedentary lives people are living now a days.
Being fit doesn't mean being a jacked body builder, but it maximizing your body and how it works together. That's why it's the best all natural cure to depression
@@metaslave5566 eh that sounds overly prescriptive and misses the point of this video. yes being fit has a ton of benefits and is a lifestyle no one said otherwise, but there is no one way to be fit and there are different levels for different lifestyles and none of that has anything to do with her point. this video is about a path to improvement aimed at people who likely aren't moving at all, what you're recommending isn't mentally sustainable for those people and could potentially physically injure them. you're not appropriately factoring in where other people are at and where they want to be, glad you've got it sorted for you though that's awesome. at the end of the day she's a professional and for the context she is talking about she's absolutely on point and you're way off track. I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong, just off track.
worth pointing out specifically that no one said anything about depression, and 'the best all natural cure' is one hell of a claim. it's one tool of many. your comment sounds like every clickbait health and fitness article that deliberately misinterprets and exaggerates studies all mashed into a paragraph. there's a fair bit of truth and a whole lot of overly prescriptive superlatives.
@cogginsnuff nah. She said a straight lie that you'll work out too hard and be too tired to concentrate and game, that's simply wrong. There's edge cases where they can't, but the absolute majority absolutely can and should, it's ridiculous to think otherwise.
You should look into the studies how working out helps with serotonin production and dopamine triggers, let alone the pure confidence you have in yourself knowing you're putting your best self forward. 97% of SSRI users would do 100x better with a healthy lifestyle over SSRI'S
@@metaslave5566 if you work out too hard you will be in pain you will be tired and that will impact your ability to concentrate. that's how being tired and in pain works. we're obviously not factoring in time here which is super relevant, but everyone's recovery period for what they consider hard will be different so how could she reasonably speak to that. she's talking generally to make her point clear which is simply; don't hurt yourself or push to the point of pain if in the early days of changing your habits because it will inhibit your ability to go about the rest of the majority of your immediate life. that's plain and simple true. we could debate the merits of short term and long term gains and/or completely and holistically changing lifestyle etc. but what she says is strictly about people getting into moving and she's right.
Get your BRAIN out of your HEAD

do you know what an interview is? he asked for her to be here because she's more qualified than he is on these things, this comment is hard to read
@@cogginsnuff Doesn’t matter, he tried to interject multiple times (literally how healthy discussion works) and she shut him down every single time and talked so long that the topic changed. Not good
@@organicallyhannah why is it 'interjecting' when Spilo does it but 'shutting down' when she does it? have you considered you might have some bias?
