I as a village kid had never dealt with trans people or met anyone and was very surprised but was honest with him that unfortunately he was right and if I could still keep him company and ask a few questions if it wasn't inappropriate and he had no problem with that, we chatted and had a good time at the bar and it was indeed a very exciting evening.

I just know a couple of very passable trans women (you wouldn't know they were trans if they didn't tell you, or you didn't know them before hand). And the number of times I've seen people unwittingly put their foot in their mouth because they didn't know is astounding. If this was a meeting between professional collogues or just general acquaintances, I don't think it would be appropriate to "warn" anyone in advance, as it *should* be a matter of no consequence. But when meeting your significant other's family, a little transparency might prevent a simple faux pas from escalating into something more. An exercise in diplomacy. But yeah, OP and her Husband handled it great.
