The main lyrics in this song ("let me stand next to your fire") came from a time when the band had just finished a gig in the cold around Christmas, 1966. They went to bass player Noel Redding's mother's house in Folkestone, England, and when they got there, Jimi asked Redding's mother Margaret if he could "stand next to her fire" to warm up. The family dog, a German Shepherd, lay by the fire, which inspired the line, "Move over Rover, and let Jimi take over." This lyrical lightning bolt was a breakthrough for Hendrix, who had just started writing songs at the request of his manager Chas Chandler. Writing riffs was easy for him, and it turned out he had a talent for crafting lyrics as well, as he was able to turn a simple line into a fiery tale of lustful passion. (This story is verified in Mat Snow's Mojo story on Hendrix that ran in the October 2006 issue.)
That's hilarious, considering the double-entendre. I had the opportunity to stay with a family in Folkestone over Christmas of 1970. It was a very quaint and charming town then, but is now the English end of the Channel Tunnel and probably very commercialized.
When I saw you were doing this one, I immediately thought... Lee is going to freak out over Mitch's drumming on this one. The almighty snare work! Rock on Lee!
In the Uk there was a hit song called Fire by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown which is why they enhanced the title of this song. Mitch Mitchell's drumming is astonishing. "Movr over Rover and let Jimi take over" is my favourite as my name is Jimmy and was a lin e I used occasionally on stage when i was singing.
I'm a power trio fan. It takes serious musical chops from all three. Recently people seem to recognize Mitchell and Redding more than they used to. There was no Experience if those two guys weren't so great.
Fire could be my favorite from Hendrix. The drumming is nasty 🔥 Also, I agree he's the best guitarist of all time. His creativity is the difference maker.
Mitch is always on "Fire". This is when we all knew Jimi was a superhero. Mitch could do everything except play "Gut Bucket" which you'll get with Band of Gypsies, and Machine Gun. I'm 66, and still have to listen to that 3 or 4 times per year just to renew my soul. It's that good.
I could never save enough money to get this album and I wanted it. It was hard for a 14-year-old to get money back then in my family. And now it's on all my playlists.
The drums in this song are so prominent and so outstanding. Which is saying a lot from any song by Jimi Hendrix, just solely based on his guitar playing being the overwhelming force. But the drums herr are awesome, just really great. It shows that The Jimi Hendrix Experience was more than just him and "a couple of guys."
As a teen drummer during this era, Mitch Mitchell was who I emulated more than any of the other good rock drummers. His style was jazzy (influenced apparently by Elvin Jones) & ultimately led me to that style of jamming. Still my favorite to listen to, but for rock I probably would've been better advised copying Charlie Watts or Al Jackson.
I was a sixteen year old kid with only a couple bucks to spare in a used record shop. I saw this cover, and I knew I wanted to hear what they were about. As an artist, this album and the artwork from Yellow Submarine had a huge impact on me. Also that snare is from the gods, brother ! Hope everyone is well ,! ☮️
No one could drive a song like Mitch, not even Keith. This was fire, the only album where he burned all the way through. I'm formally requesting Machine Gun, one of the great guitar solos in music history. I'll have my attorney submit the appropriate documents to your staff
Machine Gun! Arguably the most developed piece Jimi played live. Real conceptual artistry. ✌️ I’d like to ask… What would it take to get you to play a somewhat lengthy Cream song? Yes, I have one in mind. Thanks for spending time with us.
I know others have pointed this out before but it's worth repeatin' for anyone who may not be aware. Noel came to the audition expectin' to try out as lead guitarist...he was not a bassist. But when it became quite evident that the group already had their lead guitarist 'n he was offered the available spot as a bassist he jumped at the opportunity 'n quickly mastered the bass. The rest as they say is history...
Great track and great reaction ! And also Great production! You can , well I can almost feel the Acid kicking in, even after all these decades!! Yeah , I am Experienced!!...
Jimi really had no equal. Sure, there are shredders who can play more notes...but absolutely no one had the tasteful leads of Jimi...leads which fit like a puzzle piece. Yes, Page and Clapton came close, but none matched Jimi's fire! I saw him play a number of times and he was amazing...as if from another planet!
He is the perfect blend of poet, guitarist and singer. The perfect hybrid. He could do it all, too. Such a damn Shame what happened. I’ve seen a lot of life end earlier then it’s supposed to and it is always the worst feeling :(
My older borther bought this when I was in 6th grade. "Axis Bold as Love" was my second album purchase after "Star" by Steppenwolf (Magic Carpet Ride or Rubber Soul by then). I also bought "Axis: Bold as Love" around this time. This sculpted my musical appreciation and interpretations from that point on. I'm the "fortunate son" of a loving jazz musician/K-12 music teacher. Miss you mom!
Great song, iconic guitarist, impeccable drumming! Next, check out “Remember.” Recorded in February 1967, it was never played live or again in the studio. Also, check out “We Gotta Live Together,” from his live Band of Gypsys album with Buddy Miles. ✌️
It was a terrible tragedy 😢 imagine the things he would have done and the happiness he might have found. So sad. I bet this was an absolute mind fuck back in the day
My entire generation dreams of what glorious music Hendrix would've played if he'd lived longer life. Such talent, as Janis and Morrison, too, was never to be😪😪😪😪😥😥😥😥😥🎸❤🎸❤🎤🎤🎤
That is such a cool song. Probably viewed as a minor track compared to some of his other works, but godamn it's just a great little song. Great riff, awesome drumming, cool bass line, and a really great vocal from Jimi who sounds like he's having a lot of fun playing this one. So happy to hear you're getting into "Machine Gun" next, Lee. If you go down the audio only route, it's the version from the Band Of Gypsys live album. Otherwise, there is a colour clip of the same performance floating around youtube. It was recorded at the Fillmore East in New York on January 1st 1970. It will blow your mind.
Still a few more stand-out tracks from this album: I Don't Live Today is another unique Jimi song. Great drumming. Another psychedelic freakout original. Red House is straight 12-bar blues. Very concise, with Jimi in his element. Great guitar, singing and a lyrical sting in the tail. )And i just discovered, after all these years, that the version on the US album is a different take from that on the (familiar to me) UK album. Worth searching out the UK one as it is much better - tighter, more assured, with stunning blues guitar licks) Manic depression is a psychedelic waltz! No need to say any more 😀 And I always loved "Remember", probably reflects his time spent paying in his dues on the R&B/ Soul circuits. Very funky with his best soulful singing. Not related, but just want to say how much I enjoy this channel. I'm discovering new music that passed me by somehow - top of the list being Rory Gallagher. I'm from Ireland and had heard stories from the generation above me who saw him and spoke in reverence and awe of his gigs. Now i get it after seeing his performances here. SRV too, and many others. Great work Lee!
If you like Mitch Mitchell on drums, check out the one of group...The Dirty Mac doing the Beatles song Yer Blues...John Lennon vocals and guitar, Eric Clapton on guitar, Keith Richards on bass (he's good) and Mitch Mitchell on drums......great tune.
Favorite song on this album. The whole album deserves to be listened to. Unlike his later album this had the short play, single radio friendly, yet each of these had the potential for extended jam performance which he chise a lot if these songs live. Chas Chandler producing this debut. and what a debut! Possibly the best debut ever.
Yeah so far this and the doors are my favorite debuts of all time and I haven’t even finished them 😂😂 it’s almost like they weren’t their actual debut albums… felt like 4 deep in a strong a catalog (like Jethro Tull or something)

The song's name was always "FIRE". But some vinyl releases may have had the tag on ("Let me stand next to"...) to distinguish the Hendrix single from "FIRE" by Arthur Brown, the single title of a completely different song, released around the same time.
I have 2 Are You Experienced albums , from what I can tell , the music is the same , but the album covers are slightly different , even though they have the same numbers on them ! Besides those , I have about 30 Jimi Hendrix albums , and I know , I have barely touched the collection !
Hi there. You should try to listen to RED House. A Muddy Waters style blues taken to the next level. There's a less known version of the song, Jimmy sitting alone on chair, playing acoustic guitar. Red house 😊
Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell don't really get the credit they deserve. With Jimi's eclectic style and constant improvisation I imagine it was pretty difficult accompanying him.
The issues you having from Jimi Hendrix is because of his fake sister Janie who has treated Jimi like a cash cow.Check out the Slayer/Jimi mashup Let me stand next to your Fire. Its seemless
Jimi and Noel did not always get along. People forget Jimi only made 3 studio albums in his lifetime. Jimi wanted the core to stay around but by Electric Lady Land Noel felt pushed out. Mitch went with it. He was doing stuff with the Rolling Stones and Beatles so let it slide. That core on Jimi, Mitch and Noel was amazing. People forget Jimi went to England and Mitch and Noel were just part of the band Chas put together. Jimi for the 3rd album wanted to pick his own band based on each song.

I can't remember when I heard this but it was verrry long ago! LOL! I thought it was a helluva song at any rate!
That's hilarious, considering the double-entendre. I had the opportunity to stay with a family in Folkestone over Christmas of 1970. It was a very quaint and charming town then, but is now the English end of the Channel Tunnel and probably very commercialized.
Well I heard they went to Mitches Aunties house in North Wales.
People always focus just on Jimi Hendrix which I can understand but his backup, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding are exceptionally excellent musicians
When I saw you were doing this one, I immediately thought... Lee is going to freak out over Mitch's drumming on this one. The almighty snare work!
Rock on Lee!
Mitch’s snare is a sacred object to me at this point haha
I knew the snares were gonna blow your mind too lol❤🎉@@L33Reacts
This song packs everything into it - Jimi’s guitar, Mitchell’s drums Reddings bass and power.
The rest of the album is just as good. That's why he EXPLODED onto the scene. Mitch is KILLIN' it!!

"This Is Jimi Talking to Ya".... and the first time I heard that I was hooked for life....The G.O.A.T.

Fire could be my favorite from Hendrix. The drumming is nasty 🔥 Also, I agree he's the best guitarist of all time. His creativity is the difference maker.
Any day that you can listen to Jimi is a good day.
Definitely react to Machine Gun off of Jimi's Band Of Gypsys album. Also, Manic Depression is another great song from Are You Experienced.

Yes sir!! Play it again! Well done. As a fellow drummer, I appreciate your recognition and appreciation of Mitch. Dude was a badass 🥁
Possibly the first Hendrix song I ever heard, back in 1967. Still outstanding!
Manic Depression..!!!!
Let me stand next to your fire!
Next up: Machine Gun from Band of Gypsies.
Make sure it’s the 1970 Filmore version
This song is Pure 🔥🔥🔥!!!

Used to put this on the record player and jam along on the drums. Probably my favorite Hendrix tune.
I was an early teen when this came out. We were awestruck. Loved it from the start.
It’s always an experience to listen to a Jimi Hendrix song for the first time. (I’d never heard this one)
2x 🙂
Thank you, Scott and Lee!
RED HOUSE next… please!!!!
The most amazing thing about this song is the KEY CHANGES. They're all over other place. Outstanding!
The Key is G, which has the Em as it's relative minor. I'm fairly certain it doesn't deviate from these.
I'm so happy to hear this one. All 3 are absolutely killing it!
They sure are!! I love to hear it 😀😀
This reaction by you is double fire Lee holy s*** bro I'm loving it❤💯🎶🔥
You can’t find it on RUclips anymore, but the Woodstock performance of this is amaze balls.
