Noel Redding was a bit of a weak link in the early Jimi stuff, as he was a guitarist converted to bass by Jimi’s first manager, who put the original Experience together. Things got a lot better when Billy Cox joined on bass, a real bassist who had played with Jimi before he got famous. THIS track was an after hours in studio jam session, with Steve Winwood (Traffic) on organ, and Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane) on bass. It shows how Jimi could burn with equal musicians. It’s always a mystery, how certain musicians just ignite each other. Buddy Miles was a fine singer and musician, but Band Of Gypsies didn’t last because he wasn’t the right drummer for Jimi. If only he had lived, what a career he would’ve had!
This is essentially a freewheeling recorded jam session. Jimi saw Stevie Winwood at a club one night and he brought him back to the studio to play organ and they recorded this song on the spot in the wee hours of the morning. I think Stevie picks up the song well. There are some friends and randos from the club to make up a small audience to watch it going down. Everyone loved Voodoo Child (Slight Return), but this was my fave of the two.
bought this album at a drug store from their 'record rack' for $1.98, took it home and put it on a portable stereo record player, put the speakers on the floor and laid my head between them... still reverberating...
Spanish Ned here. Mitch was a total wizard of transforming rudiments like 5 and 6 stroke rolls, paradiddles and others into blazing fills and solos. As a drummer he will always inspire me so thank you Mitch Mitchell ( RIP). This was such a great time where all the genres were crossing and mixing with one another. Literally miraculous. Thanks Lee.

A 19 year old Steve Winwood on organ. The one S.R.V. often played was "Voodoo Child (Slight Return), with the wah wah, which ended the original vinyl album. The guitar intro to "Little Wing" is pretty challenging, which is why people like Steve Vai and S.R.V. would play it live.
After finishing this great album and perhaps thinking that it can't get any better, the Electric Ladyland album will show some more musical wonders and the guest list is remarkable, Steve Winwood plays organ, bassist Jack Casady and many more ! Happy weekend to everyone here😊

Indeed, Jimi was very shy and a very scarred person as well. Born to an alcoholic mother who would die early in his life and a stoic yet possibly abusive father, he spent a lot of time with his Cherokee Native American grandmother, got a lot of his art and fashion sense from his grandma too. He had a hard time expressing himself in conversation (so he felt) but learned to express all those feelings with his guitar to an astonishing degree.
Oh I'm sure somebody mentioned it but this is Jimi's feature super group. He had Steve Winwood of Traffic here on keys, and Jack Cassidy (sp?) of Jefferson Starship on bass. Plus other hangers on from the club Jimi pulled them out of one night. They did a few takes live in the studio, this was the 4th or so take iirc? When it comes to mitch I think this is his best showing. Jimi showed out as he always does but didn't overpower the other players. Everybody had their equally impressive solo moment. Pure magic.
"Electric Ladyland" was entirely studio-recorded. The keyboards are Stevie Winwood ("Spencer Davis Group," "Eric Clapton & The Powerhouse," "Traffic").
The few "Eric Clapton & The Powerhouse" recordings can be found on the Elektra Records "sampler" "What's Shakin'". ("What's Shakin'" includes several "Lovin' Spoonful" recordings made for Elektra as audition; I bought it at the same time as "The Lovin' Spoonful's" "Daydream" on Kama Sutra.) Winwood sings the leads. And as I recall the bass player came from "Manfred Mann" and moved on (with Clapton) to "Cream". Winwood moved on to found "Traffic". "What's Shakin, was a grab-bag of various recordings by different musicians on Elektra (including several "Lovin' Spoonful" audition recordings made for Elektra) and actually became something of best seller; usually such things ended up in the cut-out bin.
As a drummer, you need to react to Axis as Bold as Love . At the end, they mike Mitch's drums so that it sounds like a jet taking off. On Electric Ladyland , you should react to side D as one piece. I'm 69 years old, and we used to listen to entire albums because they were designed that way. However, while the entire album is great, side D is insane .(PS - if you do get high, get f--ked up, turn up the headphones, and just let the music take you away. The engineering was as far out as the music) Finally, you are not going to hear a greater live performance than Machine Gun From Band of Gypsies live from the Filmore East.
When I first heard Little Wing, I was Baptized into the World of Jimi. My intro the world of real music. Too short it was but 56 years later I still listen to Jimi every day.
Yes, more Jimi! He sought out Steve Winwood to play organ on this song. Jimi also told his bandmate that he'd love to be in a band with Steve. Winwood loved working with Jimi and has nothing but great things to say about him. Two musical icons.

No disrespect to any of the artists mentioned here, but Hendrix was the man, the visionary with the chops and self confidence to go where no one had gone before. I am 73 years old and lived during that era and bought all the LPs the day they were issued, and no one I knew back then would have put LZ on the same plane as Hendrix. And Mitch was one of the top three drum pioneers, along with Ginger and Moonie.

I still remember hearing Voodoo Chile that night and being astonished by the playing. Thanks for playing it. Check out the Rainy Day Dream Away > 1983 (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) > Still Raining Still Dreaming suite on the same album--it's like nothing else. He did seem like a being from another planet that had suddenly appeared.
This was a put together group. Live studio cut. Unrehearsed Steve Winwood Jack Cassidy bass The people in the studio clapped and you can hear them responding. Larry Coryell (soon to be a guitar phenomenon) was there and invited to play and seeing the people in the room he said no chance!) A watershed work.
Voodoo Chile was recorded at The Record Plant in NYC. There is no version live at Electric Ladyland Studios but they did release a version on the 'Blues' album (1994) which was two of the takes from the Record Plant session edited together at Electric Ladyland. It's called 'Voodoo Chile Blues' on the Blues album. The original Voodoo Chile is on Electric Ladyland.
For me, this is my favorite Hendrix record. It really represents his main influences like Albert King and Big Mama Thornton. You’re right Jimmy was shy, soft-spoken, and very laid-back. 🕊❤️🎼

Electric Ladyland from which both versions of Voodoo Chile/Child came is still my favourite album of all time. The addition of Steve Winwood and Jack Cassidy really made a great addition to the Experience in my mind. There are guests throughout the album.
Two amazing compositions. Guitarists still study Little Wing today attempting to unlock its simplicity and magic. Voodoo Chile is a free form blues/rock jam. Jimi in full sci-fi psychedelic mode. My favorite from the album, and oh my there is much to love in Electric Ladyland. Jimi followed up Voodoo Chile with Voodoo Child (Slight return) which is shorter and wilder. It was a favorite piece for him to perform live and several excellent video recordings exist (Berkely, Maui and Woodstock). Stevie channeled Jimi in his own performances of Voodoo Child (Slight Return). A deeper dive into Electric Ladyland: Rainy Day, Dream Away/Still Raining, Still Dreamin (master wah wah work) and the ultimate TRIP: 1983 - A Merman I Turn to Be. Castles Made of Sand (Axis) also highly recommended as it is in the same vein as Little Wing. Beautiful and poignant.

I'm an American, but I grew up in England, and I knew the date that this album was to be released. I was waiting at the door when Axis was released, and bought it before the shop girl could even take her coat off! Ha! I took it home and listened to it about 20 times, before I called my friends and played it for them over the phone! Soon they were all at my parents home, and we listened another 20 times. Jimi has been my hero ever since! He's the GOAT! I'm now 71 years old, and still play guitar and sing at gigs! Hell, I have a gig this coming weekend! Thank you Jimi!
voodoo child is easily the best live electric blues track ever recorded. jimi was truly inspired that day.Heard this in68 with my mouth wide open in amazement itn is so good.If you think im exagerating,, wait til you hear it . That version of Voodoo Chile is one of the greatest musical jams ever recorded. It would have been incredible if Jimi and Steve Winwood had been able to hook up to make more music. It would have been spectacular, but wasn't meant to be. 54 years after Jimi's death, people are still discovering his music and being blown away. What a musical legacy.
Hi from the UK . I saw Jimi in 1967 . on UK tour , just after " Hey Joe " was released . The whole audience could just stare with mouths open . Great reaction .
I can't think of a live in the studio recording - especially in the rock field - that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even after countless listens. The album this comes from is a stone cold masterpiece and was beyond what every other artist was capable of in 1968. Hendrix was simply on another level entirety. The most important musician in rock history. Period. And arguably the most important musician of the 20th century. I'm loving your journey into the music of this incredible artist. From the same album, there's another epic called "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)" which goes down another path entirely to what you've just listened to. And it's near namesake on the album "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" takes the song down a different trajectory, which is almost a proto-metal sound. Probably even more than that intro to "Purple Haze". Keep it going with Jimi man. Great stuff, Lee.
Winwood on organ. There was a lot of good bands back then. Jimi came around when i was 16 and i was an instant life long fan. It wasnt as if he was an out of the box alien, a lot of people i tried to introduce him to didnt like his music they preferred vocal harmonies and pop. The doors were putting out good music and canned heat and a million others, really an astounding revolutionary time. I mean the beatles were the leaders in invention and gods of the universe but jimi was known as the worlds best guitarist. He improved into his painting with sound project so fast, what would we be listening to now if he had of lived?

Steve Winwood is playing the keys here. Incredible. Also, the version you heard SRV is a different track called Voodoo Child (Slight Return). So Jimi’s version of that. Trust me. Guitar playing like it’s in a different dimension.
VooDoo Chile was an in studio jam with Hendrix, Mitch Mitchel on Drums, Steve Winwood on Organ & Jack Cassidy on Bass. Noel Redding was angry that Hendrix had so many people in the studio that night and left before this.
Nothing at all wrong with Noel, he is a very competent bassist, but he is no John Entwistle or Jack Bruce or John Paul Jones. Mitch is a pinnacle drummer, clearly among the best of the best. Jimi, however, stands alone at the top. GOAT. Unique. Stupendous. Channels the Cosmos into music.

He had his own band called 'Fat Mattress' I think that's slang for a big joint but not sure as I don't really know anything about that sort of stuff honest. He also had a track on the Electric Ladyland album that he wrote and sang vocals on, called 'Little miss Strange'. Probably the worst track on the whole double album. Ended up running a pub in Ireland.

Jack Casady played bass on Voodoo Chile. Eddie Kramer says this recorded one night with a bunch of people Jimi showed up with at Electric lady land studios. Stevie Winwood on keys. On the same album, there is a song called Voodoo Child (slight return) which Stevie Ray (and everyone else) covers. YOu can't cover this ... it's just one of those things that happen when amazing guys are all inspiring each other.
@@davescurry69 The FACT is that "The Beatles" kicked the door down, making everything that followed possible. They showed that things could be done that no one had thought possible. "The Beatles'" breakthrough in the US resulted in the so-called "British Invasion". "The Animals" were part of the "British Invasion". Chas Chandler was the bass player in "The Animals". Chas Chandler "discovered" Hendrix, became his manager, brought him to England, put a band around him.

Mike Finnigan (RIP) was organist (Hammond B3) on this track. My harmonica-playing uncle jammed with him onstage at a club in Liberal, Kansas in the 1970. It was an unforgettable "experience."
Little Wing is a classic example of that 'clean but dirty' Stratocaster tones (probably through Marshall stack or half-stack, but I haven't looked into that) which still makes people want to play a Strat. And that half-stop heavy style is one that was endlessly emulated. It's that rhythm-as-lead style that works very well in a trio. And all of the suspensions that grind so nicely when played in that slightly broken up Strat style.
You usually look up the lineups. This is Jack Cassidy on bass from the Jefferson Airplane and Steve Winwood on organ. It’s the band he would have chosen for himself. ❤
It was a legit party scene at the newly constructed Ladyland Studios in NYC. It drove Noel nuts. Jimi played bass on some tracks and it shows. He had Buddy Miles on a track or two. Got this album in 1967, I was 12 yo. I sat in my room listening to this album and I've truly never been the same since. Music became more than AM radio. The memories and feelings that music invokes never goes away no matter how old you are. I'm 12yo in my room again and I'm now 68 yo. Music can be milestones in you life like hearing Elecric Ladyland for the first time. Time goes by in the blink of an eye, savior everything.
The joke about that Johnny B. I was 13 years old in '68 loving Jimi Hendrix. My friends and I would go to Spencer's Gifts at the mall. They had a special black light room with Jimi Hendrix posters glowing all over the walls, along with Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc. They played Jimi in that room and we'd just hang out in there as long as they let us. This was just an incredible reaction! Thank you.
Led Zeppelin didn't get going until late 1968 and released their first album in 1969 so I doubt their poster would have been in such illustrious company in 1968 when they were barely known in England let alone the US where i presume you were based on your use of the word mall. I don't think we had malls or shopping centres yet in the uk at that time
The first time I saw him live was a few weeks after Monterrey Pop. I had friends who went to that show and after what they told me, I knew I had to see him as well. It was a life changing experience. I saw him at the UCSB campus gymnasium in Santa Barbara CA. It was guitar virtuosity with the volume set at "11." He didn't have any effects pedals other than a Wah Wah. His special effects were done with sheer volume and feedback which he could control like no other performer, then or now. Over 50 years have passed yet he still remains the "best."

SRV has only covered "Voodoo Child, Slight Return" which is much shorter, and is also on Electric Ladyland. On "Voodoo Chile", Steve Winwood on organ (At 12:31 Jimi says "Play on little Stevie") and Jack Casady on bass (Mitch on drums) add more greatness to this song. Whadya mean, L33? This Voodoo Chile IS the ORIGINAL!! Late one night, Hendrix ran into Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane, and Steve Winwood of Spencer Davis Group in a NYC club. Hendrix invited them to a late night studio jam, in a NYC recording studio (before a small audience of hangers on). They performed live two warm up takes (on one Hendrix had broken a string). The third live take was the keeper. Jimi Hendrix - guitar, Jack Casady - bass, Steve Winwood - organ, & Mitch Mitchell - drums. There have been tribute versions recorded by other artists!

On Electric Ladyland , you should react to side D as one piece. I'm 69 years old, and we used to listen to entire albums because they were designed that way. However, while the entire album is great, side D is insane .(PS - if you do get high, get f--ked up, turn up the headphones, and just let the music take you away. The engineering was as far out as the music)
Finally, you are not going to hear a greater live performance than Machine Gun From Band of Gypsies live from the Filmore East.

When I first heard Little Wing, I was Baptized into the World of Jimi. My intro the world of real music. Too short it was but 56 years later I still listen to Jimi every day.
Yes, more Jimi! He sought out Steve Winwood to play organ on this song. Jimi also told his bandmate that he'd love to be in a band with Steve. Winwood loved working with Jimi and has nothing but great things to say about him. Two musical icons.

No disrespect to any of the artists mentioned here, but Hendrix was the man, the visionary with the chops and self confidence to go where no one had gone before. I am 73 years old and lived during that era and bought all the LPs the day they were issued, and no one I knew back then would have put LZ on the same plane as Hendrix. And Mitch was one of the top three drum pioneers, along with Ginger and Moonie.

I still remember hearing Voodoo Chile that night and being astonished by the playing. Thanks for playing it. Check out the Rainy Day Dream Away > 1983 (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) > Still Raining Still Dreaming suite on the same album--it's like nothing else. He did seem like a being from another planet that had suddenly appeared.

Voodoo Chile was recorded at The Record Plant in NYC. There is no version live at Electric Ladyland Studios but they did release a version on the 'Blues' album (1994) which was two of the takes from the Record Plant session edited together at Electric Ladyland. It's called 'Voodoo Chile Blues' on the Blues album. The original Voodoo Chile is on Electric Ladyland.

Electric Ladyland from which both versions of Voodoo Chile/Child came is still my favourite album of all time. The addition of Steve Winwood and Jack Cassidy really made a great addition to the Experience in my mind. There are guests throughout the album.

Two amazing compositions. Guitarists still study Little Wing today attempting to unlock its simplicity and magic.
Voodoo Chile is a free form blues/rock jam. Jimi in full sci-fi psychedelic mode. My favorite from the album, and oh my there is much to love in Electric Ladyland.
Jimi followed up Voodoo Chile with Voodoo Child (Slight return) which is shorter and wilder. It was a favorite piece for him to perform live and several excellent video recordings exist (Berkely, Maui and Woodstock). Stevie channeled Jimi in his own performances of Voodoo Child (Slight Return).

Castles Made of Sand (Axis) also highly recommended as it is in the same vein as Little Wing. Beautiful and poignant.

I'm an American, but I grew up in England, and I knew the date that this album was to be released. I was waiting at the door when Axis was released, and bought it before the shop girl could even take her coat off! Ha! I took it home and listened to it about 20 times, before I called my friends and played it for them over the phone! Soon they were all at my parents home, and we listened another 20 times. Jimi has been my hero ever since! He's the GOAT! I'm now 71 years old, and still play guitar and sing at gigs! Hell, I have a gig this coming weekend! Thank you Jimi!

That version of Voodoo Chile is one of the greatest musical jams ever recorded. It would have been incredible if Jimi and Steve Winwood had been able to hook up to make more music. It would have been spectacular, but wasn't meant to be. 54 years after Jimi's death, people are still discovering his music and being blown away. What a musical legacy.

I can't think of a live in the studio recording - especially in the rock field - that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even after countless listens. The album this comes from is a stone cold masterpiece and was beyond what every other artist was capable of in 1968. Hendrix was simply on another level entirety. The most important musician in rock history. Period. And arguably the most important musician of the 20th century.
I'm loving your journey into the music of this incredible artist. From the same album, there's another epic called "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)" which goes down another path entirely to what you've just listened to.
And it's near namesake on the album "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" takes the song down a different trajectory, which is almost a proto-metal sound. Probably even more than that intro to "Purple Haze". Keep it going with Jimi man. Great stuff, Lee.
So NOW…. You are Experienced. Now you know what Jimi and the Experience is capable of. Voodoo Chile is incredible!

Winwood on organ. There was a lot of good bands back then. Jimi came around when i was 16 and i was an instant life long fan. It wasnt as if he was an out of the box alien, a lot of people i tried to introduce him to didnt like his music they preferred vocal harmonies and pop. The doors were putting out good music and canned heat and a million others, really an astounding revolutionary time. I mean the beatles were the leaders in invention and gods of the universe but jimi was known as the worlds best guitarist. He improved into his painting with sound project so fast, what would we be listening to now if he had of lived?
Dang. Forgot how cool this dude and his music were. What a year to be a freshman in college! We loved it. I never would have listened to this heavy music otherwise. What a force Hendrix was.

VooDoo Chile was an in studio jam with Hendrix, Mitch Mitchel on Drums, Steve Winwood on Organ & Jack Cassidy on Bass. Noel Redding was angry that Hendrix had so many people in the studio that night and left before this.
"Up From the Skies" is probably my favorite on the Axis album.

Nothing at all wrong with Noel, he is a very competent bassist, but he is no John Entwistle or Jack Bruce or John Paul Jones. Mitch is a pinnacle drummer, clearly among the best of the best. Jimi, however, stands alone at the top. GOAT. Unique. Stupendous. Channels the Cosmos into music.

Noel originally auditioned for the Experience on guitar and Jimi asked if he could shift to Bass.
Jimi erased many of Noel's bass parts and played them himself. This naturally annoyed the hell out of Noel.

He had his own band called 'Fat Mattress' I think that's slang for a big joint but not sure as I don't really know anything about that sort of stuff honest. He also had a track on the Electric Ladyland album that he wrote and sang vocals on, called 'Little miss Strange'. Probably the worst track on the whole double album. Ended up running a pub in Ireland.

Jack Casady played bass on Voodoo Chile. Eddie Kramer says this recorded one night with a bunch of people Jimi showed up with at Electric lady land studios. Stevie Winwood on keys. On the same album, there is a song called Voodoo Child (slight return) which Stevie Ray (and everyone else) covers. YOu can't cover this ... it's just one of those things that happen when amazing guys are all inspiring each other.

"The Beatles'" breakthrough in the US resulted in the so-called "British Invasion". "The Animals" were part of the "British Invasion". Chas Chandler was the bass player in "The Animals". Chas Chandler "discovered" Hendrix, became his manager, brought him to England, put a band around him.
@jnagarya519 still doesn't put a direct line from The Beatles to Hendrix. Of course they were more influential than any other band, but Hendrix forged his own path. Are you afraid that someone might appreciate another musician without mentioning The Beatles?

Mike Finnigan (RIP) was organist (Hammond B3) on this track. My harmonica-playing uncle jammed with him onstage at a club in Liberal, Kansas in the 1970. It was an unforgettable "experience."
My mistake -- Stevie Winwood was keyboardist here, Finnigan played on "Rainy Day" and it was just as amazing of an effort I think all would agree.
Best Hendrix" Jam Track!' Hands Down! He honed it down for("Slight Return!" which is near a new creation of itself!and an added Power dynamic!
Little Wing is a classic example of that 'clean but dirty' Stratocaster tones (probably through Marshall stack or half-stack, but I haven't looked into that) which still makes people want to play a Strat.
And that half-stop heavy style is one that was endlessly emulated. It's that rhythm-as-lead style that works very well in a trio. And all of the suspensions that grind so nicely when played in that slightly broken up Strat style.
Check out Voodoo Child: Slight Return. It is the song Stevie Ray covered, and my favoite.
SRV used Jimi’s wah wah pedal. Jimi’s father knew how much SRV idolised Jimi and gave him it in both their honours.
You usually look up the lineups. This is Jack Cassidy on bass from the Jefferson Airplane and Steve Winwood on organ. It’s the band he would have chosen for himself. ❤
It was a legit party scene at the newly constructed Ladyland Studios in NYC. It drove Noel nuts. Jimi played bass on some tracks and it shows. He had Buddy Miles on a track or two. His best performance for me is with Band of Gypsys.

Got this album in 1967, I was 12 yo. I sat in my room listening to this album and I've truly never been the same since. Music became more than AM radio.
The memories and feelings that music invokes never goes away no matter how old you are. I'm 12yo in my room again and I'm now 68 yo. Music can be milestones in you life like hearing Elecric Ladyland for the first time. Time goes by in the blink of an eye, savior everything.

Haven't listened through yet, but, if the recording of Voodoo Chile is live it's not from electric ladyland album. Just listened, this is a totally different song...not meant to be another version...the original is called, Voodoo Chile (slight return). Just Jimi having fun, and why not? A straight blues tune from a straight blue man!!!

I was 13 years old in '68 loving Jimi Hendrix. My friends and I would go to Spencer's Gifts at the mall. They had a special black light room with Jimi Hendrix posters glowing all over the walls, along with Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc. They played Jimi in that room and we'd just hang out in there as long as they let us.

Led Zeppelin didn't get going until late 1968 and released their first album in 1969 so I doubt their poster would have been in such illustrious company in 1968 when they were barely known in England let alone the US where i presume you were based on your use of the word mall. I don't think we had malls or shopping centres yet in the uk at that time
The first time I saw him live was a few weeks after Monterrey Pop. I had friends who went to that show and after what they told me, I knew I had to see him as well. It was a life changing experience. I saw him at the UCSB campus gymnasium in Santa Barbara CA. It was guitar virtuosity with the volume set at "11." He didn't have any effects pedals other than a Wah Wah. His special effects were done with sheer volume and feedback which he could control like no other performer, then or now. Over 50 years have passed yet he still remains the "best."

Whadya mean, L33? This Voodoo Chile IS the ORIGINAL!! Late one night, Hendrix ran into Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane, and Steve Winwood of Spencer Davis Group in a NYC club. Hendrix invited them to a late night studio jam, in a NYC recording studio (before a small audience of hangers on). They performed live two warm up takes (on one Hendrix had broken a string). The third live take was the keeper. Jimi Hendrix - guitar, Jack Casady - bass, Steve Winwood - organ, & Mitch Mitchell - drums. There have been tribute versions recorded by other artists!
