One the best soulful saxophones of all time! Great Lou!

Try and remember that Lonnie is playing that opening, fast walking bass line on the pedals of the Hammond with his feet, whilst playing the melody on the keys. I reckon if you stuck a broom up his arse he could sweep the floor at the same time LOL. Man's a genius

Great concert. I remember very well. Burghausen is a small Bavarian border town very close to Austria. After the concert Lou & Lonnie invited us for dinner at Wienerwald Burghausen. When the waitress came with the bill Lou pointed to Lonnie and said "The Arabs pay" :-)

Listening, to this version of 'Whee', makes me want to chase it w/ Miles' version of 'Oleo' from the live '58 Sessions', where him, Bill Evans, and especially 'Trane and Cannonball play some freakin' burnin' solos.

Lou looks incredibly good for 64 here, and still looks younger than his years today. I guess that's what staying away from the drugs and the booze will do for you!

Donaldson sounds just like Red Rodney, WHEN HE TALKS!

Denzil Best also wrote "Move." What tune and chords was "Wee" taken from? Who knows this?

He can sound a lot like Bird at times.

      EgyptianMinor :
      That's correct; pre-late '60s.
Listen him live at the Blue Note with Art Blakey and Horace Silver featuring Clifford Brown, the new trumpet Sensation.
      A Night In Tunisia etc.

I'll make sure to check it out, thanks for the tip. I gotta get more into original Hard Bop.

Funny, yet not cool him knocking Fusion and players of that style as 'Fusion and confusion musicians'. Many Fusion players can blow great over rhythm changes in swing time/feel at this tempo. But many likely can't. However, thanks to Fusion, here I am a huge Straight Ahead fan today.

Good point. I went from Earl Bostic and R and B, and Bill Haley and the Comets, to Coltrane and Bird. In retrospect, Bostic was phenomenal! Lots of Lou's work is also basically R and B, not that interesting to me.
