      Unfortunately I have to agree that “playing a fish” is somewhat a “lost art” nowadays.
      Back in the day, anglers had to rely more on their skill than on their equipment, today it’s the opposite.

    Well done , nice fish . A good size for the table , I would have kept it as well . Rob from Cornish kayak & shore fishing , advocates returning them over about 6lb as the amount of eggs a female produces is huge compared to smaller fish .
    I haven't had much luck with plugs in Cornwall , most of mine are on soft plastics or SG seekers. But I do think it is more a matter of confidence in the lure you are using. Have you tried filleting them , skinning then cut into goujons , coat in breadcrumbs and frying ? Enjoy with a mayo dip.

    • @compactangler
      @compactangler  4 года назад +1

      bernard smith Thank you, I fully agree as well. I must try the fillet strips, it sounds delicious..thanks for the tip.
      Interesting thing with the plugs and soft plastics...I have the opposite experience😆. Seems like soft plastics do better in deep water and lures do better in shallow🤔. I never had much luck with the softies, unless I was fishing for pike.

      This lure was about 8-10gr ( I’ve changed the treble hooks, so they’re lighter now) and 9cm long. I usually have 8lb or 10lb braid on as main line and 6lb fluoro carbon as a leader.
      The main thing is to balance your equipment. If you go light, go light with everything.
      Regardless of the weight, you want between 6 to 10cm lures if you want to catch medium to large sized bass.

    • @compactangler
      @compactangler  3 года назад +2

      Hi,
      this rod (length: 8’6) is rated medium-light (5-20gr). A good quality Japanese tele rod is usually in the price range of approx £100-150 (plus import tax). It also has Fuji seat and rings. It can handle small to larger fish up to 5-6lb without any problem.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @black5f
      @black5f 3 года назад +1

      Take a look at the Nash dwarf range. I bought a 6ft and an abu max baitcaster, use it all the time when travelling from Tenerife to Scotland. Don't be put off by its stiffness and "feels like a stick" nature, can lob a 18g toby 50 meters + easy and the baitcaster takes nearly 200m of 20lb. Really small and light setup for £100 all in. It saved me in the summer .. fish pulled over my 10ft shimano catanna on to rocks and 3 of the ring linings fell out. Fixed now .. that's a cracking rod as well but two piece so 5ft.

    • @black5f
      @black5f 3 года назад

      You know, I re read this and it sounded a bit like I don't like the Catanna. That's not the case, just to say I'm about to get a 2nd Catanna and a 2nd black max as an identical back up for my favourite spinning / light bait rig. The damage occurred when a 2 ft doggie slammed the unattended rod hard onto some large stones. Landed the doggie.

    • @atakd

      Bass (/bæs/; pl.: bass) is a generic common name shared by many species of ray-finned fish from the large clade Percomorpha, mainly belonging to the orders Perciformes and Moroniformes, encompassing both freshwater and marine species.

      There are a ton of bass species. To most of the angling community globally “Bass” is a reference to the largemouth and small mouth freshwater species. It’s really not a big deal to distinguish.
      Theres even different bass in the ocean so what’s your problem it makes absolutely no sense for that to trigger you 😂

      Thanks

    • @compactangler
      @compactangler  2 года назад +1

      @@1pikeybob It depends on the setup. With a good balance of the rod’s casting weight and your line’s weight plus the lure’s weight you can achieve distances between 30-70 metres.
      In a nutshell, longer and heavier rods can cast much further than lighter (and shorter) rods, but they will lack the sensitivity and versatility of the latter.
