I'd like to be transparent here and say that I told Hidizs I would consider recommending this on the conditions that the new adapter they're sending me does *not* break down, and the unit itself holds up well over time. The reason is that I really do like it because it's a much better value than both the Cobalt and Red at this point - both of which are a waste of money. I do like the Red and I recommended it a lot over the years, but it's now kind of outdated. I never recommended the Cobalt and always thought it was a complete waste of money. Nowadays that whole situation is even more of a joke, but I digress.
Also, just to make anyone who's watching/reading this aware; respectfully, I don't really care all that much about newer DACS such as the ones mentioned in the comments - notably the FiiO KA3 and Qudelix 5K. I may consider reviewing them in the future, but probably not. The reason is that as mentioned to a couple of other commenters, people will yammer on and on about those DACS (plus probably others) for a while until they are no longer the flavor of the week and yet another DAC comes out. The cycle then repeats. I have talked about this ad nausea.
Now you may be wondering; well why'd you review the S9 Pro then? Simple, Hidizs was willing to pay me for my honest opinion which is something that I outlined to them *beforehand* + it *is* a much better value than the Red and Cobalt.
In other words, every paid review comes with a disclaimer that I don't guarantee positive reviews or recommendations. So that is to say that I would have probably never reviewed the S9 had Hidizs not reached out to me.
@@HomeStudioBasics is this was your first paid review bro?
Wanted to congratulate 🥳
Dear people ,
When you want a S9pro to connect to a samsung galaxy phone ,
you need to have the usbc to usbc connect only in one way.
otherwise it will not work
Took me long to figure that out because there are many ways you can connect
i think it should be made very clear with some neon sticker or something
i love this product just the same by the way, very good sound!
Best regards
Do you mean the cable must be a specific position?
@@MPriu Yes, connector in your phone (samsung in my case) only works with one side up, same for the dongle .
i marked the sides that go up and wich to phone and wich to dongle.
Man the vids are getting better and better
Thanks man! 👊🙂
For this task I use the Qudelix-5K. Great app, kicks hard, full DSP, EQ, and balanced. Works as a desktop and mobile DAC / Amp and has a sweet clip. $109. Crazy.
Absolut agree. The Qudelix is great! But I decided to get an additional solution: Fiio KA3, because it has not battery and can work as a minimal setup when wired. Both are great, the Qudelix clearly outstanding in terms of app.
It seems to me that your main driver to not recommending this DAC is related to issues with the adapter and cable which makes doubt about your review. After researching a bit, this might not be a common issue after all and therefore, your review is heavily biased toward that particular issue, missing what the DAC has to really offer in terms of sound quality.. you even confirmed that your would recommend it if those issues were not there. An excellent analysis was actually made to this same DAC by Audio Science Review with very analytical data and it proved to be vastly superior to the dragonfly cobalt, which is supposed to be the best from audioquest. Hopefully you could center your focus on audio quality and overall performance.
Nice video, thanks for the reviews! Always appreciate the humor.
Thank you and my pleasure man!
How are your grandchildren? Hope they're doing well, my good man. Thanks for this review.
My Avantone planar are 32oym 250mw. U think this can hold up?
What do you think of the Fiio KA3?
Does it work well with dt770 pro "80ohm" headphones
This can most certainly drive anything 80 ohms, 80 ohms isnt very high.
Yup.
What is your dac recommendation for iem only ? What is your top 3 iems recommendation ? Thanks
Go Link is good. S9 Pro also.
The fact that Dragonfly is heavier does not mean it does not have built issues. Lot of reports on various forums about issue with jack socket coming off the main circuit baord. Also my own experience. I have red and cobalt and both are curently broken. I am waiting for solder iron to be delivered so I can fix them. If I cannot I will never buy anything from Audioquest.
I actually emailed Audioquest about the issue 2 weeks ago and they have never replied.
Works on the note 10+... I like the sound, crisper than my hipdac... I haven't broken mine in a year or so.. The only thing I don't like is that it overheats with long sessions
Great to hear! So it holds up well, then? Have you dropped it or anything? And any issues with the adapter or Type-C cable?
@@HomeStudioBasics dropped it a few times but it's pretty light as you said so that's in its favour I'm thinking. Now that you mention it, when it was new I had to swap the cable around as it didn't work one way(don't understand why as both sides are usb-c). The cable has been pretty solid for me so far as well, no fraying or loose connections
@@kawaida21 Nice! Yeah, the Logo side has to be in your PC AFAIK. Kinda weird, yeah? Also just got the new adapter from Hidizs. Fingers crossed it holds up! Perhaps the lightweight will be a benefit long-term. We'll see. I guess I still would have liked it to be 23g (like my DF Red) instead of 11, but I digress.
great review thank you. I have an Iphone an a macbook pro all i need is a good portable dac that make the sound quality of my music better. I will the BTR5 sound as good as the Hidizs S9 Pro. I have never try a Dac and I was wondering if they make a difference in sound quality on macbooks and iphones with good headphones. I also have the apple lighting adapter to 3.5 mm and some people said it will sound as good as the Hidizs S9 Pro which makes me question everything :(
Another great review - Thanks! Check out Fiio KA3 as wired solutions without any bells and whistles… and the Qudelix 5K as the absolute overkill solution in terms of app settings. Have both and love them!
Thanks man! Those 2 seem to be the ones I need to take a look at but as mentioned in another comment, people are going to yammer on about these until the next one comes out and then the cycle repeats LOL. I'm good with my BTR5 rec for the foreseeable future. DACS are so unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
@@HomeStudioBasics Well, right. But what about non inear earbuds? I’m so in love with the Fiio FF3… maybe a review of some earbuds would be nice.
@@HomeStudioBasics great review thank you. I have an Iphone an a macbook pro all i need is a good portable dac that make the sound quality of my music better. Does the fiio ka3 sound good? Is it as good as the qudelix
@@days_syruptalk The KA3 is fine, but the Qudelix is amazing …. Get the Q.
Got an S9Pro several months ago (maybe more?) and can't get the balanced output to work on my IPhone. Went back and forth with customer service and ended up spending another $40.00+ on cables and it still doesn't work with my Iphone. It's fine with my laptop but I have other options for that, besides I use my phone a lot for listening to music. Any suggestions would be appreciated?
Granted I'm old and am no wiz at this stuff but after a while it just wasn't worth my time so went back to my Dragonfly Red...
Oh well!!
By the way, how are your grandchildren??
Has anyone had issues with crackling sounds? It sounds like here’s a loose connection and that’s what’s causing it but it happens when the s9’s & iPhones not moving on the table. Really annoying. Also had the same issue with the usb adaptor coming apart but this only happened this week, I’ve had the DAC since it was released and the crackling sounds been there for ages, probably 2-3 months into buying it.
I'll test again but I haven't had any issues.
I had this DAC and while it sounded good, I run into an issue with beyer770, the bass was way out of control.. I tried different DACs (lg V30, Meizu pro dongle, hidizs dh80s) and the issue was only with s9pro. Maybe the gain was too much? Just guessing.
With other headphones I had it sounded fine..
Dude turn you source volume down
32 ohm or 80 ohm ?
Given the relative prices of the two products, you can buy an off the shelf adaptor/cable and still save oodles. This review focused too much on the adaptor and cable and not the sound quality of the device
you should make a video about the apple dongle
😂😂
Great video.
I would like to see a review of the Lotoo paw s2 vs the dragonfly red
Personally i use the Red with a set of HD650 and enjoy it a lot.
I would just hope studios would master the music to a higher level then the norm these days.
I bought the s9 pro in silver dont know if the colour change something like the dragonfly but I had before the dragonfly red and WAW!!! Such an upgrade for less money? I think it does amp a bit! It’s my new companion ❤
Edit: I listen to my music with Ath m50x (the mid and high becomes muted) and seinheiser hd660s2 (chefs kiss)
Try Fiio KA3.
See my response to the pinned comment.
Any particular reason why you never review schiit products?
Schiit decided early on that they weren't going to send me stuff even after asking for my shipping address in an email exchange. They were supposed to send I think the Fulla and a couple others but that was back in 2018. Very weird but honestly I don't really care all that much.
Sadly, a lot of DACs do not work with Samsung phones.
But it might be tied to Android 12 in some way, as Pixel phones had the same issue when Android 12 rolled out (it is fixed now).
Samsung is shite. Wasn't Android 12 released like a year ago? Shouldn't they have resolved all the issues with it by now?
I've got a hidizs and a note 10+ and it works great... Mileage may vary
@@kawaida21 Not just mileage might vary, but updates as well :)
If I am not mistaken, it was broken on FE for a long time, but it should be fixed or semi-fixed right now.
Some solutions required to connect the DAC, reboot the phone and only after reboot it worked.
works great with samsung
Just picked one up for $80. I'll take my chances with build quality.
You would be taking the same chances with Dragonfly if not more. My two Dragonfly-s broke in the same way, jack socket has disconnected from ain board. Aparently very common issue with them.
@pistopit7142 I had the s9 for bout 4 months. No issues with build quality of dac but the cables were garbage. All the plastics came off cables due to bad glue. Sold the s9 a few days ago. Bought a modi 3 for home and on the go Bluetooth is good enough for me.
People are buying amp/DAC with the 2,5mm because of that 2,5mm, so it is likely that they will utilize that 2,5mm connection (2,5 vs 3,5 mm connection on the same unit always sounds better). You are saving a lot of many so you can buy also a balanced cable. For unbalanced 3,5mm amp/DAC the centrance dacport HD is still the best. Frankly it is better than the s9pro, DFR, DFC, quite a bit. Especially used with the supra or AQ usb cable, as in the case of every DAC :) (and I kid you not). Btw the s9pro is actually better built than the DFR. Yes the s9pro is light but sturdy, dragonfly red will disintegrate after some time (that back part where the 3,5mm jack is will unglue and fall out) the s9pro will last longer. The s9pro also doesnt work properly on my LG (LGg7) so LG users should also reconsider.
It is light but I don't feel it is flimsy. I didn't hear a big difference with my M570s but I did with the Fearless Freedom S8s.
Hey stu ,i want a dac which gives bass slam and extension on both ends while being transparent , which one of these dac chips that you talk about will help me get that sound , burr brown , akm or ess , if there is some other alternative please enlighten me.
Doesn't really have much to do with the dac imo. DACS don't provide slam, really, unless you have a bass boost or something. The most transparent though is the ESS for me.
Buy this iem Opera OM1 extra bass
I just bought this and did back to back testing with my Chord Mojo. This DAC came highly rated from ASR. I used Focal Clear and LCDi4. I will just say that the sound from the S9 is disappointing. I'm shocked how much better the Mojo sounds.
Just acquired the S9 pro plus for $70 delivered. Also have a Truthear Shio on the way, but have owned a V30 and a V50 now for several years. I think the world is unnecessarily sh1tting itself over a myriad of cheapo dongles that largely sound the same, especially given they're driven by phones on the go. Any subjective review of a sub £100 device is meaningless, given how closely they all measure. All you need to do is check how much power it will deliver at a reference THD, suggest 0.2% is arguably an audiophile threshold. There are measurement curves all over the Internet, so it's easy to make an informed objective decision.
I personally would not buy any audioquest product, however regardless of my bias I think they need a full revision. The design is old and not properly executed. Even though the chinese product has poor QC they did what I am suggesting what AQ needs to do if they can
Agreed, but I actually prefer just plugging it in like a USB stick without the need for a cable. I think that's a way better design than the S9 tbh. They could easily update it to compete with the ones that have 2.5mm or whatever and add 768/DSD compatibility as well while also making them easier to use with phones.
The problem with AudioQuest is that after doing all that they'll charge $500 for it lmao. They really piss me off in a lot of ways.
Dragonfly red heard
Just seen this review. My black version seems tough and durable, nice clip case. I like that it's tiny. Excellent sound compared to most of my DAP's and dongles. Most C to C cables are a bit rubbishy, but the Hidizs cable is way better than the very poor Cayin RU6 "interference" compromised cable. I would Rec it compared to many sources. Not perfect but better than most.
Sounds like this thing wouldn't last when your grandchildren got their hands on it.
NOPE! 😂
It's a mobile dac... Being lighter is an advantage
Regardless, it still feels very cheap. We'll see how it holds up.
😂 bro it eat lots of juice from battery, this one probably good for laptop or desktop
@@HomeStudioBasics You should have looked at the black one, then! My black S9 Pro, which I got late last week (October 6th 2023) feels robust enough, and besides, I inserted it into the supplied plastic clip. I use it hooked up to my Mac Mini, and it sounds great. I'm learning about music formats and how to download them. I will need to get an OTG USB-C to lightning cable soon for my iPhone to Grado 325i's. They sound great from the Mac Mini at my desk just now. Shame you never really got past the weight and cable issues. A reviewer should maybe have spare cables on hand and perhaps should give Hidisz a gentle reminder to improve them.

DSD is super limited, but at least the Grateful dead (&company) have a direct live recording. The rest is esoteric/niche classical and jazz tape digitized and direct recording (contemporary artists performing classical/chamber). There's nothing native over 192 24 bit from streaming services... I don't even think FLAC files are recorded up to 300 nevermind 700khz sample rates that flagship PCM DAC's can handle.
Software and hardware PCM upscaling is A)practically a way to overcome poor filters for ultrasonic B) useless; basically the equivalent of watching 480p on a 4k TV 🤣
Another entertaining review!
LOL 480p on 4K TV. *Me in a homer simpson voice and eyes wide* "Wwwwooaaahhh. It's so lifelike!!!" 😂🤣
You're exactly right about DSD. A lot of those recordings are classical (and I love Classical) but I honestly don't care enough to pay for that. I've tested a lot of DSD in the past and it simply wouldn't be worth it to blow a bunch of money. You'd just end up broke because you have to pay PER track. It's like WWE lmao. Pay Per View, B**CH!
The bottom line is that 99% of people will never use these high PCM/DSD DACS for those files *even* if they bought them for exactly that purpose because of what you mention. They're just so rare and a lot of it is upscaling which isn't actually higher quality lol.
Looking at this while I'm considering a schiit jotunhiem 2 with the multibit dac lol
Qudelix 5k. No competion at its price range
Ive never asked this🤭…but how are yo grandchildren ? AIGHT?!
After last week's in-home debacle (mostly due to lots of rain), I'm now teaching them the value of a good work ethic. We've been in the garden pruning, repotting, and generally caring after our plants which I showed them can be grown from saved seeds! We are currently looking after Basil, Oregano, Onion, Tomato, Lemon, Pepper (Orange, Red, Yellow), Potatoes, Parsley, and even Cantaloupe!
As you can imagine, they are beyond ecstatic by these new developments and agree that gardening is perhaps one of the most rewarding God-given endeavors on earth. :) I will keep you posted as our garden continues to bloom and blossom.
@@HomeStudioBasics Sounds cool. Maybe you are wasted on Audio reviewing lol.
I must disagree with you.
Not talking about the look,
which is the very last priority
to me,
as far as I can say,
the BTR5 is a stone-axe
compared to the Qudelix-5K.
I didn't see any better than that.
I am a qudelix 5K guy myself. The buttons and build quality is not great but that parametric equalizer is just really unique and has a ton of utility.
Haven't tried it.
@@michaelcorcoran8768 Rest assured there will be another dac soon that everyone yammers on and on about for a few weeks until the next one comes out and then the cycle continues lol.
Why don't you put it in and let it stay there and it might feel really nice... 😆😆😆🤣😂
Oh behave!!! I was thinking of making an only fans page so I can do pron.
