I bought my Snap On box in 1968- it is still full of tools and special items many of which haven't been used in decades. All my drawers still work like new and I still have the pair of spring release tools to remove them. Watching this video got me thinking about emptying the drawers and cleaning out the box and re-organizing things, but I thought naah I know exactly which drawer to open for whatever I need, so just leave well enough alone.
Well I bought my KRA680 in about 1988 and I had a 1” thick black granite top made for it and it too is full of tools some that I also have not used in years however I’ve been through many sets of drawer slides(that you can’t get any longer!) and they do not open like new! The good thing is I don’t have to or want to buy Snap On tools anymore!
Tool salesmen are terrible. If you don't owe them money, they push very hard to sell you something. If you do owe the money, they push very hard to collect the money. After many years I figured out if I owe the guy a dollar or two it would be too small of amount for him to bother me about paying him and enough on the books that he didn't try to sell me anymore . 😊😊😊
I restored mine and put a 3-4” finished poly plywood top with half routered down 1/4” and used a piece of 1/4” cold rolled steel plate there under the vise. I can literally beat the heck out of it and no damage whatsoever. That is a sweet find and you did a bang up job of bringing it back! My current project is a modified 5 drawer cart from harbor freight adding two additional 5 drawer pods AND a side box totaling a 21 drawer rolling box! Good luck with yours, I’m sure you’ll get good use out of it!
I've seen others restore Snap on boxes, but mustie approach is " I will make this work with 0 to minimal cash and I will like it!",😂 that's why I love your channel

I have 2 of these KR-562A boxes. I looked for one for 2 years, and then suddenly found 2 at the same time-bought them both. I use them in a very large pole barn to bring the tools to the work. I used a salvaged piced of bowling alley for the top and bolted a nice vice to it. Many of these came with a foot brake and a 'hitch' in front- they were designed to be pulled with a tug around the airport. I only wish they came with ball bearing drawer slides...
An old boss of mine back in the 90’s worked for when I was turning wrenches had a box like yours with big brakes and hitch. His drawers were worn too and he wanted to upgrade to the roller slides but snap on didn’t make since they weren’t standard size drawers like there regular boxes. He ended up buying a new Mac tool box and gave his old box to his son he had it a short time later traded in for a new Mac toolbox.

I picked up a KR562B tool box a few weeks back, I had intentions of just cleaning it up so I could get it to working condition, well I found your video on your restoration, it motivated me to do a restoration of the box. My luck was that the owner I purchased the box from had brand new slides in the box which he ordered back in 2018 so I was able to replace the damaged slides, the drawers open and move like they're new. Thanks for the video, you explained in great detail the locking mechanism and how to replace them. I learned a lot from your video. My Snap On KR562B has new life and is back in the game.
When I started watching this channel it got me inspired to restore/revive old stuff and I started with a small, old aircompressor and I was delighted how much better it looked with some paint and new hardware on it. Five years later its still serves a purpose and working great. Really nice to see this drawer getting the treatment it deserves. The strips on the drawers make all the difference and I really like it a lot.
My boss’s old work bench was actually covered with thin carpet. We cleaned it with a dust buster. However , rarely did a screw or nut bounce to the ground. Nice surface to work on.
It looks amazing. What a unique box. Note the holder on the inside door for all the paperwork. Would make a great kitchen island with a butcher block top.

Great job on the resto! That was a good buy too. I would put an one foot square piece of 3/8" thick aluminum plate under that vise. The 16 gage sheet metal top is not nearly strong enough for when you put something in the vise and crank down on it. Also I'd put the biggest fender washers you can fit on the underside behind the nuts, to spread the load.

My brother is a licensed mechanic. He bought snap on, Mac tools. He doesn't work in a business anymore but we now work out of my garage. The quality of those tools, in my opinion, is second to none. I have plenty of tools I bought for me, the average back yard mechanic. Nothing wrong with them. But, if you're wrenching on cars everyday snap on/ Mac tools is the way to go. If you're just starting out, get the icon and master craft tools.
Not only do I use that blue painters tape when I paint, I also use it to label my containers of food/leftovers, etc.... that I'm putting in the freezer. A black sharpie works great for marking them and the tape comes off easily!
30 year aircraft mechanic here. I've never seen that type of box at the airport. Also never seen a Snap On box without roller slides. You've found that Snap On tools aren't really lifetime warranty anymore. Not worth the excessively high price buying brand new in my opinion. Rolling a medium size box full of tools out to the airplane can suck. A bigger box can be almost impossible even with good wheels. I've seen a tow bar attached to a couple of the massive boxes owned by old school mechanics. Going out on the ramp from the hangar where the boxes are stored can create problems because some hangars have tracks for the hangar doors. I've seen boxes tip over while crossing the tracks. Most of us older guys with a ton (literally) of tools have a main box and smaller work cart. Put the tools needed for the particular job in the work cart and roll it to the aircraft. You generally don't need all your tools at once- just a few. Great channel.
Current A&P mechanic 20 years military experience and 10 years McDonald Douglas and another 12 plus years current Lockheed Nevada employee experience tells me for tool accountability take only what you need to the aircraft.
Only been wrenching on airplanes 18 years but I’ve seen this box a number of times. One time was when I bought one. Still have it at the airport. Mostly use it as a work surface and hope to restore it one day if I had the time.
Looks great! I did a similar rehab a few years back but left the original paint on a WWII-era factory gray Snap On roller cab I got for $20. Works like new!
Mate, the fact that Snap On were not able to live up to their "Lifetime Warranty" has got me thinking they should spot you $2,000 bucks for restoring something they were not able to help you with. Great to see you resurrecting old quality, fixable stuff. Wish there was more "fixable" stuff still being made and in the US, UK, Australia and more. We need to start making quality stuff again rather than bringing in crap from far away places that I will not name.

If you're just starting out, get the icon and master craft tools.
Hope things are ok ..
I had one of those years ago, traded it in about 25 years ago. They are a good toolbox.
AKA - Taco Cart. Nice find.
A rubber mat with a hemorrhoid, laughing my ass off! Mustie, you're my Sunday morning with coffee go to, for years now. Rock on, brother!
Hope everything is ok Mustie1 I’m worried about you.
Gotta be honest. I don't recall seeing one @ the airport. Usually a little smaller size. Waterloo's; Vidmars; Mac ; Ted (Kennedy's)just kidding.
Current A&P mechanic 20 years military experience and 10 years McDonald Douglas and another 12 plus years current Lockheed Nevada employee experience tells me for tool accountability take only what you need to the aircraft.
12 years MDAC, Long Beach. One of the best jobs on on the planet! Tools: gota be fit and trim... @@robertbailey8444
A couple of pieces of narrow metal flat strapping are helpful for removing drawers....
You're so right about time we start manufacturing again in the homeland bring back employment and pride!
