I almost feel like this turned into a tire test proving that the RTR tires on the $300 truck are *almost* as good as the tires you put on an $1100 build. I'd love to see how the Ascent handles all those lines with the same tires and wheels the Pro has.
The pro is a sweet rig, but that Accent is really pretty good out of the box with the right set of wheels and tires and a little bit of extra weight, that is going to be heavy hitter!
By doing a shock rework (I outlined what i did in a previous video), either a Fusion SE 1800 combo or a Holmes Crawlmaster Sport 550 15T and a HW 1080 G2, Gen 8 brass outer portal covers and lastly wheels and tires, the Redcat will do everything the Pro will do at less than 1/2 the cost. I think considering the Ascent is straight out of the box stock and it kept up with the Pro at 95% of the obstacles...with ZERO added weight, I'd tend to favor the Ascent. Put the same level of stuff on the Ascent and it'll be no contest.
So happy I didn't build a pro, and thankful that I got to see the Ascent Fusion rtr running in person. I now have 3 Ascent Fusion rtr rigs. Well 2 now, because my son wanted a second one.
Thank you so much for making this video. I’m trying to build a comp crawler for 2024 and I feel like there’s too many good platforms to start with. I almost want to just do a ground up build from scratch and source a chassis and go from there. Either way I’m really impressed with the Ascent for such a bargain
That was Rocky part 1, now do a couple minor upgrades to the redcat (Rocky) and have Rocky 2. Great video, that Redcat is very capable for only $300. Add some sticky tires and some brass weighted parts to keep the tires on the ground and it will be very very competitive.
Great video as always. I’ve just had 24th scale crawlers until now as I knew I would spend way too much money on a 10th scale. I bought the Ascent a few weeks ago based on price/performance. It’s very responsive to cheap mods like washers in the front rims and 3S. I’ve seen a huge improvement with just these cheap mods. I have a HW Fusion on the bench waiting to go in. Will still have under $400 into it and will have a nice brushless system.
PRO they are jusy soo stable and refined , they always react the exact same every time out so if you had a issues with a line the next time you know to pick a better line. The Pro makes you a better driver. Just my 2 cents . Great video man.
I ordered the Ascent which will be here whenever Horizon Hobby thinks I'm worthy...their "In Stock" items are not in stock. I assembled Treal 1.9 bead lock wheels on Proline 4.75 Krawler tires with Proline 2 stage foam inserts. My first RC truck.
Some tires, aluminum wheels, and a little brass and some suspension tuning 12:18 and the Ascent will be an amazing rig. For the price you can't beat it. Redcat has definitely done an amazing job for rtr vehicle
I’ve have owned almost every crawler platform except redcat stuff. I haven’t purchased an ascent yet but I’m definitely going to. After watching quite a few videos it’s pretty damn impressive right out of the box. I will say that the quality you’re getting from the pro vs the quality of the ascent is really something you’d just have to ask yourself “do I care enough about quality to send the extra money on the axial”. I feel like when it comes down to it pretty much all 1/10 crawlers are going to do a lot of the same stuff. There are only so many chassis variations you can do. Tires will make or break a crawler though. I ran my pro in a comp with a brand new set of voodoo klr’s and struggled the entire time. Went back and ran the course after the comp but I ran my proline swampers and pulled everything line like it was nothing.
I got my girlfriend an Ascent, and we love it. I also have a K10 high trail, and the lines she can do even as a novice is pretty impressive. Love the videos. Keep it up.
I have the 7th gen redcat and did all free mods I found on YT. The only non free thing I did was take the wheels and tires apart and take the foams out plug the vent hole with a screw then I put 25 gram airsoft bbs in the front tires and 20 gram bbs in the back. The tires act like air filled tires and grab terrain better and the bbs give it awesome low center of gravity. It is pretty impressive for completely stock.
Nice. I’m the type that would take the $300 crawler that just fine over most terrain than spend $1k over a for something that’s just a little better over most obstacles. I get it though. Some want and need the best there is to work with. Just not me.
I'm going to get the ascent for my 10-year-old daughter who wants her own truck. I think that for the price it can't be beat. I already have a set of hyrax predators to go on it with dual stage foams. I will also put the hobbywing 1080 and a Holmes hobby motor in it. Might switch out the springs on the shocks to drop it down more. Other than that I believe it can out crawl 90% of the trucks I see.
I took a gen 7 sport threw some aftermarket capra axles under it. Some trenchers a servo a an upgraded brushed holmes esc and motor in it. Things ridiculous, a few tweaks left but for what I spent I'd take it over an rtr Basecamp or Traxxas anyday.
I give. The decision to you Adam. For giving us a great head to head with an honest upfront review at the end thanks for continuing to move the hobby forward in multiple scales. Happy holidays. Let me know if you wanna get rid of the red cat. 😊
I've had 3 different ideas on my first comp build. the pro, the vrd carbon, and the ascent and my bank account keeps leaning more towards the ascent. Every video I see helps just that little bit more
Nothing against Cape Crawlers here... But if you have time, go look at Crawler Canyons teardown and rework of the Ascent before you make a decision. I personally think a lot these reviews on the Ascent are entirely to nice to it. Friend of mine bought one.. and absolutely hates that my Phoenix can kick it off the rocks.
I’ve seen a couple pros run and my ascent (which is built now) destroys anything that isn’t a 100% custom build. I mean obviously if it’s a gshot or Poizd type build it don’t have the same clearance to run with those trucks but it’s an absolute beast. I have about a $1k gspeed I’m probably going to sell because the ascent is just more fun lol. There’s something awesome that I just love about killing lines with a Redcat while people struggle on it with their custom builds 😆
@@CapeCrawlers I just did the soa mod on mine. Had some issues with the panhard mounts and decided to just ditch it all lol. Thats really the only issue I’ve had though.
As always, GREAT content! Love the analogy! (cue Rocky theme song during driving footage) I was very impressed with both! Thank you for your content. I got a few friends to also follow you. Do you have a video tutorial about driving tips?
@CapeCrawlers like always amazing video I must say! I have to give credit to the Redcat it hung with the big dogs pretty well! Pretty interested in the Redcat now .
Thanks for the battle between these two trucks. I love you bringing yor son along on these vid's. Now back to the pro vs Accent battle. The pro has the uppre hand with all the tweaks you can do to it. Where as the Accent has to be upgraded. Like a few here I will be getting the Accent in the near future thanks to your vid. Keep up the good work!
Personally I think a lot of its functionality would be lost as a trail truck. It’s not super quick and you would want more wheel speed on the trail. Lack of a two speed transmission means you would have to upgrade motors to get there, which isn’t terrible. For a trail truck you would be better off with the Everest in my opinion
That location is so cool! Also wow, i wouldnt expect such huge performance from a „cheap“ 300 dollar car. Very cool Edit also i just noticed the sticker on the pro build haha
A low cg rig on straight axles vs a higher cg on portals? Ain't gonna side hill which was the problem at the end. I will say my ascent has weighted wheels, rupture tires and fusion se motor with a carbon frame i built but still wont hang with my home built version of the scx10 pro.
Not to take away anything from either truck or your capable handling, I have personally took 2 different trx4 trucks, stripped down all stock with only tire and wheel upgrades and a few electronic relocation and had an exceptional crawler. I've went up against the VS10, wraith which was all built strong and made them go home with their tail between their legs 🤣
a true comp build with good/great parts should always outdo any rtr. Its designed with the right geometry (which the ascent does not have), designed to keep sprung weight down (which the ascent does not have), designed to distribute weight on sidehill/up/down hill (which the ascent is poorly designed to do). When will you see an ascent in a comp for money? its been made clear the ascent has some real problems - steel frame rails, over engineered with additional oz of sprung weight unnecessarily, just look at the front links that need to be bent, the panhard bars are not parallel nor even on the same plane. How can a CMS build with so much sprung weight outdue a comp build with an lcg and sprung weight so low? if so, then I point at the driver whom can't really put it thru its paces and find its line and its limits. Its like taking a sports car and a '67 VW and seeing which one is faster, but only driving it in the city. This is not about adam or any of you, just the sayers whom don't believe you get what you pay for.

Add some decent shocks and I bet it will out crawl it
@@joegrady2975 yeah right...and pigs can fly 😂
@@themountain59 actually, a had a pig that could fly, and out crawl pretty much everything, VS10, wraith
The fact your little boy is 9/10 times with you on these crawls makes it even cooler. Huge fan
Nice video. I think with some brass upgrades and better tires, the Ascent would give the pro build a good run its money.

Kinda hard to put up the stock ascent with a scx pro that has brass and everything
Not really considering it did the same lines

Jim with you Mitchell The ascent was doing very well id love to see it with just some wheels and tires. And take off the bed i think it would crush
No shame in that $300 game! 🤣
Just get rid of the crappy spectrum internals on your SCX pro

An excellent review. Rocky.
On price The Redcat great comparison 👍

It’s an old sand pit off of W great western road on Yarmouth. Across the street from Deb’s way
