this is by far the best tutorial i have seen.i know there are some things have been changed with the vba link but nobody mentioned the renaming the save files and converting them back for normal vba.thank you so much now i can finally evolve my kadabra and continue my nuzlocke.
Thank you for this tutorial Roahm, it really helped out! idk if you know of me but I've been watching your channel since 2011 and am a huge Battle Network fan. You have some serious commitment and dedication to the production value of your LP videos and I admire that. Awesome stuff, keep it up!
Very nice demo vid, Roahm. I think you covered pretty much everything anyone would be curious to know about VBA Link, plus the whole alternate dimension Roahm thing was a nice gimmick for the vid. ^^
It's also worth noting, make ABSOLUTELY sure you go to Link, turn the Wireless off, Set Link Timeout to 10000, and Safer speed, on both VBA Link Emulators. If any of that is different, linking Emerald with Ruby/Sapphire is not going to happen when it comes to Record Mixing.
While you can't use VBA Link to link GB\GBC games, there's a GB emulator called TGB Dual that you can use in pretty much the same way. (The latest version is kind of crash-happy though, so I'd suggest looking up Version 5 if you want to use it.)
I'd say a flash game, but depending on its length, reloading might be an issue given the bandwidth limit HughesNet gives Roahm. Would Doom be too obvious?
Ib is a horror adventure game where you must explore a world within what appears to be a haunted painting and find your way out. Lots of Silent Hill-type puzzle solving involved.
Haha, nice selection of games on your desktop: Also, if you need help finding the file extension in Windows 7, look for the Folder Option icon in the Control Panel, click the view tab, and uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types" I believe the Folder Option is in the Control Panels across XP and vista as well, iirc. It's been a while since I last used them.
Official Nintendo GBA link cables have a wide clipping end that locks it overtop the cart slot, making it impossible to use it while you have GBC or GB games in the cart slot. I would never use a third party cable because of their tendency to BREAK the cable port. Did you not notice the two seemingly meaningless grooves next to the cart slot on GBA originals?
If I recall some cables did have problems with different type gameboys on ether end. I believe that is why the GBA cable had a slightly different shaped port. One cable I have has a GBC plug on one end and a GBA on the other with a switch in the middle that... didn't do anything...but was labeled GBC and GBA.
thank you for that wonderful explanation roahm. It was really fun. CPRoam was the opposite of you it seemed. really gave me an idea too. As for the video, I love how you named your pokemon. It's very cute. Alas, your video was a bit confusing to me even when I watched it each time. This is the main reason I don't mess with computer stuff. Thank you though
This was helpful because, although I was able to figure out how VBA Link works, I didn't know how to make the normal VBA files work on Link. I may try this in the future.
You could actually link GB and GBC games on the GBA, but you had to use a GBC link cable for that (and not a GBA link cable, as that one functions differently). I used to do that myself. In fact, I even linked up a GBA and a GBC. The GBC link cable fits perfectly into the GBA's link cable port (but not vice versa), that's why it works.
I think it's just the hardware of the cable that limits the gbc to gbc transfer as i have a specific gbc cable that has a port for a game boy advance which works perfectly fine with gold/silver/yellow/red.
Hey, I actually kind of having a problem with the GBA Link Cable feature. So here is the following. I opened up four players at once, I set the player one to host the server and allow all other three to connect. So basically at the part where “Please enter”, the player that host the server will suddenly have the connection disabled. I retried it like multiple times, hoping to get better results but it just keep giving the same outcome. Any way to fix this?
Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure on that. I've never tried running it with more than 2 players, which theoretically it SHOULD be able to do, but I don't have any official connection to the program itself, so I don't know what might be going wrong there.
Well, this is a treat... now we know how you get those chips from one version of MMBN to the other! And I heartily laughed when you pulled the Mxyzptlk trick on your inter-dimensional counterpart there... ...please tell me you got the idea from various Superman comics and the "Superfriends" show, and not from that one episode of "Family Guy" that put Adam West on "Jeopardy".
DarkKnightDroid How far are you in Fire Red? I know in FR / LG, you had to complete a post-game side quest at the Sevii Islands to allow it to link with RSE, maybe that's the issue?
works great, but i dont think my computer can handle two games running at once. i keep getting communication errors because one freezes up while the other is still going. still, if i can get the connection to last until after a trade i think it'll work just fine for that (currently i'm testing it in a battle because i dont have anything worth trading over from firered to leafgreen, or vice versa)
I'm trying to play MMBN3 with my friend, but when he connects to me, game becomes incredibly slow, and then, after a few seconds, his emulator shuts down with an error.
VezonZone Oh, I guess you're trying to do netplay then? That, I have no experience with, my connection isn't good enough to do netplay stuff generally, so it's not something I've particularly looked into. The VBA Link stuff I was demoing is purely for purposes like this, playing two games at the same time on one computer to do things like trades or linked features. I don't know how to use it over the internet, or if it even really can be used for that.
Liked one minute in because I knew by then that this would be an amusing tutorial video. I got a bit impatient with the controls thing though and ended up hooking up two laptops to a Hamachi, just to skip that step.. Now nobody ask for any Opposite!Roahm videos. I can't see the real Roahm putting up with that kind of setting, especially if it's Mega Man Blecks. (Might make for an interesting cameo if MMBN4-6 aren't out of the question, though...)
Weird... when I used the VBA Link it was already set to run two windows and have sepparate save files. Wonder if this depends of where you find your VBA?
@ShadowdaHedgie11 : You might need to mess with the save type settings, I use Flash 128k I believe. I also have the "real time clock" setting enabled, I think that might be part of it too.
Hey Roahm I'm not sure if you've been asked this before or if you have already done one and I'm sorry if you have but are you ever going to make a pokemon let's play? It can be any gen and I'll be happy to watch it
You might have to forward some ports for that unless the laptops are hooked up to the same Wireless Network Connection. Unfortunately, I can't really help you there since I don't port-forward stuff myself.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure what could be the issue there. I didn't make VBA Link, so I'm not sure of all the ins and outs as to what could be causing your problem.
Lindos Ladio It sounds like your system just isn't displaying extentions then. You'll need to right click in the folder view, go into folder options, and see if there's anything there that says "display extentions."
How do i get VBA Link 1.8 to open the old save file in the first place (can't open .sav .sa1 .sa2 .sg1 .sg2 .sgm extensions)? Extensions sg1 .sg2 .sgm cause VBA Link to crash, while .sav .sa1 .sa2 do not appear.
Alasdair Duncan VBA needs to still open the .GBA file, not the .sa1 file. The .sa1 file is just automatically read by the emulator as the save file of the game you're loading up.
RoahmMythril when I load up he game in vbalink it doesn't read my old vba saves. even after I place the sa1 and 2 files in the games folder.....do i need to make to make a new game under this emulator instead?
@NexebNoXV : I plan to do a No Evoultions run of Emerald. It will give me an excuse to train a lot of 3rd gen unevolved Pokemon I haven't worked with before.
I take it he chained Nuzlockes at some point? I specifically remember Roahm saying he didn't like the randomness factor of the "First catch per route" rule.
@10001vader : In his dimension, he's already played it and is hounded to do Perfect Runs of the Classic series, which he hates because it's too bright and lively.
I have a question I didn't see covered in your video. If you're using the same game with vba link, like you did to get the secret chips at the end of your Mega Man Battle Network 2 project, do you have to create a second file and then rename that one as .sa2? I am playing directly from vba link.
That would definitely be Route 102, then. Basically, Surskit have an extremely low chance of appearing in the grass on that route. Specifically, a 1% chance, and that isn't passed over to Emerald, either. So that was a pretty lucky encounter there, Roahm. :)
@MartenFerret : To each their own. The original 151 are great, but lets be honest, there were a lot of "pink or purple blobs" in there that weren't particularly creative. I love seeing every new generation that comes out and training all the new breeds.
I used this to get a Alakazam. If you want to do what i did you can simply load your save file twice (basically clones), and just trade kadabra for kadabra, and whichever you save last will be the end result. (same for Machamp, and whatever)
@DarkDyllon : Huh, that's strange. I seem to remember having a problem linking between a Game Boy Color and my original GBA, linking Silver and Crystal...
I can't open 2 at once and my save files are named differently. I've opened 2 at once without even changing anything before, but I can't do it at all now.
It is physically impossible to link a GBA original and a GBC due to the link port being next to the game cart slot in GBA originals, however SP which was the flip top with the backlight had the cart slot below the buttons and the link slot between the shoulder buttons making it possible to link GBA SP and GBC.
You, uh, might want to go back and delete or edit these since as you later discovered you were getting the GBA-to-GBA cable mixed up with the GBA-to-GameCube cable.
@@ZeldaTheSwordsman Which would invalidate the exchange this is part of and make the responses that follow make no sense. I'm not afraid of a mistake I made that is later addressed being seen. The only reason I ever delete a comment would be to remove the response chain attached as it was adding nothing useful and was filled with toxic language. I've done this once, on one of my own videos in which a viewer sent a rudely worded criticism which I addressed and explained could not be fixed due to how I make my videos, they grew increasingly insistent on their point and increasingly rude and aggressive, after being warned a single further rude, insulting or aggressive response would see the entire exchanged removed they openly insulted my intelligence. I deleted the original comment which took down every response in the chain attached to it, but these old comments don't work like that so all deleting or editing would do is make the others look weird and confuse anyone who reads them.
I really don't think the length of the cart has anything to do with the cable though. I don't understand how you are able to hook a GBC cable when using a GBC game, but the cart is "too long" for another cable. Unless where you come from the cable isn't just a cable but has some sort of latching mechanism, or the plugs are extremely fat.. I know for a fact as a kid, I traded using a Pelican GBA cable. (it has a switch to turn to GBC mode) from GBA to GBA using GBC games.
Uh...Let's see. He also used Bug style all through his MMBN3 LP, he did a minimalist run of Metroid and is planning a 100% run of Legend of Zelda, and his favorite Pokemon is Machoke.
I'm sure You've heard this enough before, but the GBA can link 2 Gameboy/Gameboy color games. The problem, was that you needed to use a Gameboy Color game link with 2 GBA systems for it to work. The Link Cable itself is the problem when trading with Color games. But, thanks. I've always been curious about the VBA Link.
I think it also depended on the games in question. Like, I'm fairly certain the Oracle Zeldas can use either cable. But then, the Oracle Zeldas came late enough in the GBC lifespan to be able to tell if they were running on a GBA.
Hey Roahm, not sure if you're gonna answer, but anyways, my .sav files are automatically setting their default program to hl2, so when I try to rename them, the file is called "Pokemon Fire Red.sa1.sav" How do I fix this? ;-;
maybe its game dependent? cause there were 2 versions of dbz legendary super warriors 1 with more or less the japanese names and 1 with more the english names but they were the same game anyways so they actualy linked quite nicely but maybe pokemon has more problems with linking compared to others... to bad its near impossible to do linked(not wireless) lag free netbattles with people over hamachi:(

KingMingee Not that I know of right off.
Do you need two roms or share one?
Hey Roahm, not sure if you're gonna answer, but anyways, my .sav files are automatically setting their default program to hl2, so when I try to rename them, the file is called "Pokemon Fire Red.sa1.sav" How do I fix this? ;-;
i knew how to help you replay if you can
maybe its game dependent?
cause there were 2 versions of dbz legendary super warriors
1 with more or less the japanese names and 1 with more the english names
but they were the same game anyways so they actualy linked quite nicely
but maybe pokemon has more problems with linking compared to others...
to bad its near impossible to do linked(not wireless) lag free netbattles with people over hamachi:(
