- An upscaled VHS tape rip of Famimaga Video's Sept. 1989 issue, a video companion to the Japanese games magazine covering the Famicom era and the arrival of new consoles. This episode devotes nearly half of its running time to a super play of Ghouls ’N Ghosts for Mega Drive, which is quite a choice. It also unfortunately contains a preview of Square's Tom Sawyer for Famicom, which includes what might be the most grotesquely racist rendition of a Black character (namely, Jim) ever seen in a video game, so please be aware of that content before watching.

The trailer for Mother is a classic "no crying until the ending". The lengthy Ghouls n' Ghosts b roll is definitely a very nice gift from Family Computer Magazine.
Oh. Oh, goodness. That Tom Sawyer clip ...
That Tom Sawyer clip is insane. One overtly racist sprite and portrait for a Black character, and then a second portrait for a different black character that looks completely normal, both portraits even appearing together at 5:34. How.
I unfortunately missed the warning in the description before seeing the clip - it cuts quite close to the "read more" button in the description. Thanks to your previous NES Works episode covering the game though, I was at least aware that the game featured some Stuff.
outrun with no music... cursed
Love your videos Mr Parish. Although every time I see the word ‘Famimaga’, I always misread it as Farmiga-as in Vera Farmiga, the actress from the Conjuring and other movies 😅
I skip to a random timestamp and it's just a guy freaking out about seeing an 8-bit sprite's panties. 80s Japan was crazy, lol
In the same year, Square gave us Tom Sawyer (wuuuuut) and the first game in the SaGa series. Both with Uematsu as composer.
Safe to say why only one of these games stood the test of time (and why only one of them was localized).
A Tom Sawyer RPG? Amazing! Must be better than the one we got here in the US... And then again, that sprite for Jim... what the piss, Japan?
Even stranger, this game was based on an anime wherein Jim looks relatively normal.
twinbee 3, square's tom sawyer, double dragon 2, hokuto no ken 3, dragon spirit, downtown nekketsu monogatari, gradius 2, makai toushi Sa•Ga (!), sd gundam, pc engine darius! (by far the and away the best version of the soundtrack imo), pc engine outrun? (interesting that it forgoes the soundtrack for the digitized engine sounds), a lewd wonder momo, lord pac-land!, dirt fox looks and sounds sick (surprised i never heard of it before), a commercial for mother 1 (!), and a whole walkthrough of mega drive daimakaimura? (wild how accurate it sounds to that old capcom arcade strange sound while still having little embellishments here and there), what a jam-packed issue of famimaga
thank you for this.
Cool. Never knew that Dirt Fox was linked. Looks like fun.
Jeremy! I have to know; What's your setup like for ripping these tapes?? 🤩 In my latest scouring of Yahoo Auctions and Mercari, I picked up some cool VHS tapes I wouldn't mind archiving.
I've got some decent analog capture gear and a pretty good VCR... (Sadly not a pro S-VHS deck as I would've liked.) Do you use a TBC or anything to improve the quality of the video?
Ah, nothing fancy. Panasonic VHS deck to upscaler.
@JeremyParish Oh, so no Time Base Corrector? Cool! I figured I'd at minimum need a line doubler, but a TBC is pretty spendy. Thanks for the info! 😁👍
It wasn't quite what I was looking for, but I scored a 2010 JVC DVD/VCR combo from an enterprise AV setup... The picture is outstanding. Can't wait to have a look at the tapes. 😃👌
Is this higher quality footage of the Mother commercial than other youtube uploads?
I don’t know. Feel free to compare and decide.
Does the monitor on that Dirt Fox game have a diagonal scanline going...? I don't think I've ever seen that before.
Jeremy, you’ve spent time in Japan, correct? Do they have better drugs than we have? Because what the everloving fuck????
