I like this video - I had a broken carbon blade but managed to find a used one where the shifter mech was toast, so I replaced just the front half from the brake lever pivot forward. Someone asked a question about how to remove the brake lever pivot pin. Like the video shows, some have a c-clip. On the RS-685 hydraulic levers, there is no c-clip. Just tap the pin out from the tapered end. The springs that provide the back lever return keep tension on the pivot pin. Getting the springs back in when you push the pivot pin back through is hard. I recommend using a tiny electronics screwdriver with a bit of a concave on the flat (I filed it that way) to push the spring down and smaller diameter pin to hold the spring in place while tapping the pivot pin back in. It took a few tries... hope this helps.

Hi thanks for this video, it means I 'think' I can repair my Shimano Tiagra right side lever, as the gears are no longer changing. I have managed to take the hood/cover and the unit cover off, to see the inner parts. It seems the little 'ratchet' clip that goes onto each cog on the gear changing mechanism has lost it's elasticity. I undid the circlip nut, strangely on the Tiagra it is counterclock-wise or 'lefty loosey' as my kids would say :-) I was trying clockwise as per your video and swearing thinking who the hell has done this up so tight and then just wondered...... and it did 🙂
Also to remove the little pin in front of the circlip nut, I just used a pair of pliers and it moved away very easily. The pliers won't work to push the pin back over the circlip nut, but I'll worry about that when it comes to it.
I've manged to source a 'spares only' right handed unit, where the hydraulic fluid reservoir has been cross threaded and no longer holds pressure, but I don't need that bit.
Fingers crossed I can repair it.
It is annoying as the loss of tension on the ratchet is clearly a default, yet Shimano don't offer a 'spare' or will cover it for replacement unit !
Oh well, I'm learning some new skills and will hopefully have a very broad smile on my face when I fix it, especially as Halfords did bugger all, apart from say 'it's broken mate you need a new lever unit, thats £150 please' Hmmmmmm I'm paying £40 for the 'spares' lever so hopefully saved myself £110 :-)

They are not available separately! If you have fluid coming out of the hole it doesn’t necessarily mean it has a hole in it. Strip the bladder out and check it over clean and refit. Sometimes the fluid comes out because the system is overfilled and the pads have been pushed back without removing the bleed cover first! The excess fluid has nowhere to go and vents through the bladder and out the hole.

I also thought I had a hole in the bladder causing a leak, but after disassembling, cleaning, inspecting (no holes found) and carefully refitting the bladder the problem seems to have gone away. I think what may have happened is that the bladder seal got unseated when I pushed the caliper pistons back to fit new pads. Anyway this worth a try as it seems the bladder isn't available as a spare part (why not!), and it's cheaper than a new shifter!

Don't know if anybody will read this but here goes anyway ..... I sent a nice email to Shimano outlining my problem and requested that they send me a new bladder, which they did, so now the leak is fixed! A big thanks to Shimano for their excellent customer service! 👍

@@dtaylor4319 hi! Have same problem, hope to change this rubber seal too. Can you tell to wich e-mail adress you wrote to Shimano? It was local dealer or Shimano global?

@@dtaylor4319 I have same problems, either bladder or piston leak or both and haven't torn all the way into is yet. Like Yvgeny N I could use the contact you used for Shimano. I'm in the U.S. so wondering if you could share where you contacted them?
