  • Reclusive producer extraordinaire Otis Jackson Jr. AKA Madlib discussed Prince, the importance of doing taxes, the death of his Quasimoto alter-ego, collaborating with Kanye West and his love of industrial music in this rare public lecture as part of RBMA Festival NYC 2016. #RBMA #madlib #beats
    TOPICS:
    4:08 - Growing up
    20:29 - Sampling
    27:07 - Freddie Gibbs
    33:12 - J Dilla
    45:38 - Quasimoto
    56:10 - MF Doom
Since the early ‘90s, the reclusive Madlib has been producing music at a relentless pace. Whether he’s working with artists like Freddie Gibbs, MF Doom or Erykah Badu, collaborating with the late J Dilla, or working under one of his own aliases, like the drugged out party creature Quasimoto, Madlib has carved out his own idiosyncratic corner in the massive hip-hop universe.

I feel like he could have did a better job. It’s obvious Madlib doesn’t like talking about himself. He was always way more open to talk about the music and artists he’s interested in. You need to adapt and go in those directions and from there you learn about madlib
They also should have talked about gear and instruments. Asking generic process questions didn’t go anywhere

  • @plain-bagel
    @plain-bagel 8 лет назад +928

I don't think the interviewer is bad overall (his interview with DOOM is excellent), but he certainly doesn't capitalize on the (few) moments when Madlib actually seems willing to say more about a particular topic. For example, when Madlib says he made the "No More Parties in LA" beat on an iPad the interviewer should do everything possible to keep Madlib talking about that. Instead he says "oh that's interesting" and moves on... Missed opportunities.

Producers who are introvert or shy is due to the heavy creative process and this also involved thier inner feelings used to create music. This process creates a strange awkwardness when they speak to the public due to sound absorbing. The creative process uses thier minds and captivates them into sound alone. Madlib speaks through music and music only. He has secrets of Dilla he will never reveal. I don't know if this makes sense as it's not easy to put your finger on it. R.I.P James Yancey

That's his zone though. He doesn't care about the fame. One of the most modest individuals I have seen talk. It's like he is famous, but not at the same time. That perfect balance. Madlib is definitely in my top 5 producers or top 3 no question. Madlib is the most abstract producer out of all those you mentioned though imo. He isn't meant for everybody. He is meant for those that don't limit themselves to one way of thought, especially on music. He does hip hop through all the genres of music. Has that universal vibe to him. Kind of why he is an alien. I just can't understand how Dilla and Madlib were able to know each other at the same time in the same places doing the same godly work that they do. It's insane. They both were born and raised around music day in and day out. And this is the result of that. 2 of the best hip hop producer/emotion to motion creators I to have done what they do. That's the power of music and love right there. Nothing else matters, but that to them. That's what living is about.

Side note-When Soundpieces Da Antidote came out it got 3mics in the Source which is hip hop blasphemy,Peanut Butter Wolf who as the head of Stones Throw was in Lootpacks corner & he sent a note to the reviewer in the next months letters page of the source basically saying “WTF!How the fuck can you give this masterpiece anything but a five mics,ya’ll are sleeping watch”I’m paraphrasing but that was the main point, history has proven Wolf 100% correct & the source 100% wrong.

It's a trip how similar Madlib is to Dilla. Idk if it's that lib is just so influenced by him or that they're just that similar. Also, it is so refreshing to see someone who is so profound at their craft be so humble & down-to-earth. Dude's a living legend & I feel lucky to be listening to his music while he's still alive. 1love

Madlib is just how I expected him to be.
He doesn't really like/care about talking with people, it's always been about the music and the experiences he has with it. Props to the interviewer for trying to get him to open up, though. It was a valiant effort.

+Red Bull Music Academy How do you let Madlib refer to making a beat on an iPad without following up with a question about the app(s) that he used to make the beat? Come on, man! You're asking him about his creative process (and it was difficult enough to get him to divulge much about that) but then you just let the iPad music production thing pass without further exploration? Geez.

Although madlib is an introvert and does poorly with interviewers I respect his genuineness. He doesnt answer questions with some made up, vague, over the top, story like many rappers do to try and sound deep...he answers nonchalantly...doesnt fabricate any answers. Its a horrible interview but still a breath of fresh air watching.

  • @altermachina

Thank you for this interview. Madlib is such an inspiration for many musicians including myself. His knowledge of music and his approach to it really motivates me to keep going. He is an Artist with a capital "A". He cares about it and wants to learn more and more, never satisfied. He always mentions great artists like Sun Ra, Lonnie Liston Smith, MF Doom, J Dilla or John Coltrane. By studying him you learn a lot. People nowadays are so focused on the technical aspect (like mixing) instead of the creative input of the artist. OK, those things are important but in the long run what matters are the ideas that the artist provides to the culture. Him learning all those instruments is also so fascinating and motivates me to do the same. He is a real artist and i'm glad that his name becomes a bit more mainstream because he deserves it. In a few years people will realize who he was and they will be blown away. Shout out to the Bad Kid !

The interviews at RBMA are always very nervous and star struck, but they’re clearly fans and know a lot about the artist. It’s really cool and endearing and I much prefer it to interviewers who are clearly just doing an assignment and asking questions they already know answers to.
