It’s been 14 years since neo-soul master D’Angelo released his opus of a sophomore LP, Voodoo, and fans worldwide are still waiting with bated breath at the prospect of what will follow it.
In his first-ever public lecture - held at the Brooklyn Museum, during the month-long Red Bull Music Academy NYC Festival 2014 - D’Angelo answered that question and discussed his inspirations, his work, and his thoughts on the legacy that was born from Voodoo.

It's weird seeing him sit down and speak and be present. I've gotten so used to the idea of him as a mythical being.
what smh
I know what you mean. There's always been somewhat of a mystique about him
This is very awkward for me and I needed to pause. FIRST OFF, he good. SECONDLY, this is just weird for me. I have gone soooooo long without hearing D'Aneglo give an interview. He maaaaaaaaaaaaaay need to sing this interview to me. Would also help him to relax. I don't know if I can do it. ALSO - he seems slightly uncomfortable, which in-turn is making me uncomfortable.
There are a lot of different emotions right now.
Man O'Neal I think it comes with time. Many musicians are all about the music, so talking is not their forte. Many are quite shy. I think as time goes on and they experience growth, speaking becomes easier. D is one of my favorites. His music is life-changing for me. All the best to him.
Man O'Neal facts
The fact that he put out Voodoo and Brown Sugar before the age of 25 is a testament to his sheer brilliance.
this man is a fucking music legend.
His shyness is so cute lol
D'Angelo is one of the baddest mothers to ever make a record.
SAY IT AGAIN!!!
He's a father not a mother
Hes a male
@@bumbpp1257 He probably meant to say Mother******.
@@Walking-MY-Path Thanks for clearing that up. This is all so confusing
Anything D'Angelo does I support cause his a real artist. He takes his artistry seriously.

first off.. if u say NOONE MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS... YOUs a lie... cuz i Brought r and b Back!! >>>>>>> ruclips.net/video/P52xe1A6K-s/видео.htmlsi=ezqVimo0H4UHJOCO
No other artist can disappear for 12 years and resurface and still be relevant. D’Angelo is in a league of his own.
first off.. if u say NOONE MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS... YOUs a lie... cuz i Brought r and b Back!! >>>>>>> ruclips.net/video/P52xe1A6K-s/видео.htmlsi=ezqVimo0H4UHJOCO
True talent
Him,Maxwell and Sade can only do this
Much mondo respect I can relate yahjamaste
Relevant? I’d say that most of the modern rap / rnb fans don’t even know him unfortunately. It’s all about trap and has been for a long time unfortunately
He's so not into speaking like most Artists..he emotes and plays..he is a musician..and expresses himself honestly..its not easy for someone to talk about what they do. They just do it. Sometimes they don't really enjoy telling everyone how they communicate the language of what they do.
This is exactly how Prince operated he expressed himself in his music/art which is D'Angelo fav artist by the way!
Judge him off his music, he's a singer! He's not some brain dead model/actor. Maybe he gained weight to shed that old image he was pigeon held too. This dude is our generations Marvin, Stevie, and Herbie. If you want to critique his look, you're here for the wrong reason!
D'Angelo sexy as hell sitting on the sofa. #NOHomo
Giving you LL lick dem lips and some mo!
Who said what?
i agree!
right!i agree…
I'm thinking probably yes, but he sure looking good again now. it is natural self.
That muthafuckin part!
This man writes the MOST beautiful lyrics ever...
it's more beautiful the way he mumbles them too
Voodoo was a pivotal album in my life. I’m such a dark, angry, depressed guy, but when I throw that record on, my whole being lightens up. That album is one of the few things that can calm me down and bring me peace during troubled times. Thank you d’angelo 🙏 you’re a genius above all geniuses and we are privileged to listen to anything you put out.
Hope one year on you’re doing better. D’Angelo really is amazing.
Read stillness speaks, and A new earth by Eckhart Tolle. And Conscious love by Gay and Katherine Hendricks
His speaking voice is so deep. Never heard him speak before so this is really surprising 😀
For real
The reason why D'angelo is such a force to be reckoned with, is that he is a genius who came along at just the right time- Marvin, Prince, and Jimi inspired him, Gospel, Blues, Hip-Hop and Soul trained him. I mean what a base!
Al Green too.
When the pandemic is over and we can start going to shows again.... D'Angelo is the first and only artist I want to see live.
Same
That part
FACTS😭😭😭
Yes
I still think he is beautiful. I hope he stops smoking and pray his health is great. I want D'Angelo here a long time. ❤❤
"I never claimed I do neo-soul. I always said I do black music."
You can read more on D'Angelo here...

So talented..... Dangelo could sing the phonebook and I'd buy it... Just pure Talent
Martin Kentari it sure is a good song
What music isn't black music? Lol Even my man Beethoven had a black mumma
UR3ANFISH ... ??!!
UR3ANFISH That's right, and if his momma was Black, that does that make him? Black! Faccsssss.
Even his just regular talking voice is sexy. Dude is a musical genius, too.
What he says around 09:30 about the Beatles and Prince is beautiful. In other words... "Simplicity is the zenith of a long, arduous journey, not the starting point"
"So it was Goodie Mob, the Roots, and the Fugees."
I fucking miss the 90's, yo. That's what u call a lineup.
Too true bruh
Exactly
Crazy how a Mexican kid that grew up around a lot Spanish music, found D angelo lol . I love Hip Hop and Neo Soul!
LOL. Not really, u know this music shit is universal brutha. I hope u checked out all those artists he named as well, all legends.
I'm saying from a cultural perspective . How many Hispanics do you know listen to D angelo? Not even my black friends and that's what d angelo says he makes, Black music.
Those eyes! Still as sexy as the first time I saw him. Some people don’t have to try too hard to be sexy, it’s just something they were born with.
This is my dude. I can't wait for the album. A lot of people talk about the shit he went through. But all of us, at some point in life will get tested. And if you're not strong, life will break you down. I had my battles with drugs, alcohol, being overweight, car accidents, jail, and not really wanting to live anymore. So when I see someone who has made it through trying times, It makes me very happy for that person
As we all should be happy to see him overcoming. Ppl just want to point their finger at the next person struggling to make them feel like they're somehow better. Good for you getting it together as well. I can only hope I make it through my own personal battles...
Real talk warrior!!!
I love your story Aaron. You, like D'angelo, are human beings at the end of the day. I appreciate real people. You struggled, but you made it out alright. Proud of you brother.
Bless you 😊
smh at all these 'fans' in the comments talking about his appearance, like that kind of bullshit wasn't part of what threw his career off course. "Now if you're wondering... about the shape I'm in... I hope it ain't my abdomen that you're referring to."
+Henry Hill "'cause what i want y'all to listen to...."
The sexiest muscle he has is his brain. He is a musical genius and a rare talent these days.
Being from Richmond and going to the rival high school, I know all about the big talent show he was talking about at the Mosque. And truly there is alot of talent floating around Richmond Va....
He hated being looked at as a sex symbol he is an artist. He looks good to me.
This is why I stay in the house away from people - cause they point out and talk about dumb shit at the worst times. This is man is not up here to discuss his fashion rags.
He thug-earthy. Leave him be people. lol
this man needs a biopic, his life would be an amazing story.
Definitely.
There is a documentary out I think that was made by someone in the Netherlands. It has not been released in the US yet.
@@elv3812 already seen it! I can link you if you want to watch
@@GodsLightWorker Sure! Thanks!
@@GodsLightWorker me too please! Ive been looking for it!
He is spiritual and I pray for his sanity and perseverance through it all🙏🏾
Rest easy Roy Hargrove, Voodoo wouldn't have sounded the same without you
He is beautiful. That voice and his aura. He owns whatever he decides to sing and do..
WTF is up with folks commenting about this musical genius and his weight!!! IDK bout y'all but 195 or 295 it don't matter that brotha still fine-any way you flip it!
He's down to earth definitely, eclectic true to himself and individualistic. That's why I like him. He's a rocker, soul artist and unique.
hearing him laugh just fills my whole being with joy 🥺
Missing Prince, but hey, got D’Angelo. Now, need a new album in 2021!
HE NEED TO DROP THE FUCKING ALBUM ALREADY!!! 14 YEARS D'ANGELO!!! COME ON MAN IT'S BEEN 14 YEARS!!!
Riiiggghhhhtttt! Hahaaa!
15 years. Voodoo came out in 1999
PhuckHue2 Nope, came out in 2000.
I got the promo copy in 1999
D-LLOYD THA KiiiNG how did you like the results
his music is timeless
D'Angelo is one of my favorite artists of all time. This is the first long interview thar I have even seen him do...and I'm seeing it 8 years after it happened!
Who else couldn't stop smiling throughout this interview? 😁
It's just good to hear from D'angelo on this type of platform.
Why are people, mainly women, so fuckin preoccupied with his weight/body/whatever. He came into the game chubby and he gave us CLASSIC MUSIC. Voodoo, same thing, Black Messiah, same damn thing. The man is a LEGEND.
I agree. The most attractive muscle he has is his brain. He is a genius.
Stephanie Wilson you ain't lyin
He wasn't always chubby that's why people keep commenting on the weight. He had a period (remember the video..."How Does It Feel")...yeah...that's the D'Angelo a lot of women remember. Myself included. The weight gain didn't bother me because I care more about the music. Plus, I think he is still a good-looking guy.
He looks to be healthy & happy.God bless him.I love his hearty laugh:)
I'm excited to hear his new creations.
In my lifetime, GOAT. First time I saw him as a kid on soul train singing Brown Sugar, I had to get his album. That was my first album. (CD from Circuit City). I was 12. Voodoo was magic. "Feels like making love" got me through my first and awkward times with my high school GF. "Untitled" pretty much turned me into a man. Then I waited...a long time...Black Messiah ended up being my first iTunes download. I'm so happy he's back to show people what soul, Neo-soul, and incredible music is all about. Thank you, thank you, thank you D.
That smile and them lips tho!!!
He looks so good to me😍💋
Good for him. Massive talent. Looks healthy and on a good track. Still so shy. But that's just his way. All the fuckry going on in the comments below is so lame. Just be happy he's back making music since there are very few people on his level around these days. I'm also grateful he took the time to do an interview at all cause he's clearly uncomfortable with it.
D’Angelo is a true artist down to every bone in his body. He feels it. He understands it. He tips his hat to the Beatles, the Church, Prince….his repertoire is enormous. He appears to struggle expressing himself but his music is how he expresses himself which is fluid and dynamic.
He is so gifted and precious
I love everything about D'angelo and once this virus is done I'm gonna make it a mission to see him live.
Apologies on the very minor audio/video sync issues in places!
I appreciate an artist trying to explain their process. I know it's a lot more difficult than people would like to give them credit for. I don't appreciate the snickering and comfortable laughs of the audience when other artists are mentioned. They come off as pretentious. And it's obvious that D'Angelo has respect for these artists that he mentions. What's funny about Brian McKnight, R Kelly, and D'Angelo being in the same place? They are all good artists in their own right.
Brilliant talk. 44:09 D’Angelo so slick you can hardly see his spliff. Smooth as funk…
I love how he is so real.. real muscian talk...
Why do people chuckle(including the interviewer) when D'angelo mentions Lamb of God and Slipknot?? Is he only supposed to know one kind of music? He clearly loves music because their was no hesitation in how he picked them out.
I don't think it's even that serious😂😂😂
He just mentioning bands from his home town from the hard rock scene etc. since they had no really big acts in another genre. They probably laughed since they are pretty different from what he's known for or what you expect from his town.
I know this comment is years later...but I didn't understand the laughing either. Anyone who knows D'Angelo knows his influences come from all different types of genres. There is actually a lot of talent from Virginia. Pharell said the same thing...he was influenced by so many genres as well and he is straight from Virginia too. Missy Elliott is also from Virginia. So ...I think that says a lot. A lot of talent in Virginia.
@@lisacox3750 Pharrell's production partner Chad Hugo (Neptunes), Clipse (Pusha T and Malice), and Timbaland too.
He is a beautiful soul and a genius musician
This interview is greatness. The host really picked the minds of both D'Angelo and Questlove so that we could get some insight into how they came together and how they record together. I wouldn't have been mad if it had went on longer. I'm surprised that someone as reclusive as Mr. Archer sat down for such a long interview. There were a lot of interesting things about him that I didn't know before watching this. I also forgot that he wrote "You Will Know".
I jus wanna hug him so bad!!!! He is my favorite artist in the world. His talent and songwriting ability is unmatched. We LOVE U D ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤
y'all talking about his appearance ?? for what ? he still fine. he just gained some man meat 😉😊 but who cares. his face is still gorgeous and them lips still intact 😋
lovelygirldgaf yes them lipssss
He is even sexier with the weight.
It's funny how alot of us women don't want a man putting us down when we gain a little weight, but turn around and do the same thing to men when they gain... Hypocritical much....
I prefer how he looks here. I've never liked that "boy toy" look. Besides if he was mine, we'd burn off any extra weight really fast. LOL
Man meat😂😂😂
I just love this. D'Angelo looks good any type of way. Still waiting for that new album.
The Brown Sugar LP from 95 was one of the best Albums I heard..in a long time since Marvin Gaye's Whats Going On. It was so infectious. I was on tour with a Gospel group and I hip everybody to it. Everyone on tour knew the lyrics.
Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, arranger, producer.... this man does it all. I have always loved the way he honors his inspiration in his music without ever coming off as a copycat. Anything he decides to give us, I’ll appreciate the gift. So damn talented, all about the music. Love this artist since I first heard of him. Hope there is more to come from the man.
Like Prince I think dangelo is a genius. The lyrics and music arrangements are superb and very diverse. He is also a very handsome man no matter what size he is.
I've never ever heard D'Angelo speak & now that I have I must say I'm taken aback & quite impressed. I guess I was expecting the stereotypical arrogant, hypermasculine attitude of being overly impressed with self. Instead he has a humility & quietness that kinda goes with being a serious artist. Personally I like him stocky like he is now just as much as when he was slim & muscular. He's still super cute & now that I've seen how spiritual & introspective he is, he's so much more attractive to me.
why were you expecting that?
I didn't expect that at all
It's very well known that D'Angelo is very shy offstage lol. Not arrogant at all.
+Xavier Leeds VERY well known
D'Angelo is absolutely BRILLIANT! Plus, he's out-of-this-world SEXY! I got the new CD and I can't stop listening to it. I'm so happy to have something new from him!
He's gorgeous and amazingly talented. Loved this.
You got that right my fellow latina !
+Karen Ramirez ya. obesity is hot
KAREN!!!!
I love all these people who aren't musicians commenting on this genius...shake my head how dumb some of his "fans" are. That being said when he speaks of "Devil's Pie," like a field of slaves, or a chain gang, that goes to show how deep this brother is.
too true. on an alan lomax vibe with the lyric.
Love this interview, D'Angelo's confidence yet humility makes me appreciate his music even more. A gem ahead of his time.
Got mad love for d'angelo and his soulful music he may have gained weight but his face still looks handsome as usual and I still admire him either way...hes a legend!
Fit or fat he’s still fine and a musical genius!!!
the mystic comes from him unwilling to compromise his music..he is one of the rare musicians who has the It-factor..
What a great interview, wish it could've gone on longer! He's so warm and human. It's such a 180 from most "celebrity" interviews. From this you really get a sense of how introverted he is, and yet how happy he is to open up at this moment. There's no "performance," it's just him.
In 70/80 yrs time.....people will see this bro in the same light as Beethoven and Mozart.....one of many music pioneers
Richmond has an insane music scene right now, bluegrass to jazz, metal to hip hop, eclectic and original, and has for years. Many of us taking the cues from the man right here. Much love from the 804, RVA ALL DAY!
Quest Love’s story was soooo entertaining!
I love him. What a great soul. He deserves all his success and more.
D'Angelo is a living legend. Thank you for all the music you've given us, man. What an incredibly smart, talented, and passionate man.
Just please please please come back with an album! Love D'Angelo!!!
Thank you! I've worn Brown Sugar and Voodoo out!
you're in luck, Black Messiah just came out :)
ShoteruSpeedruns YESSSS, ALREADY BOUGHT IT, IT'S A MASTERPIECE!
missanamarie It's so great how his music is just as magical as it was almost 15 years ago!
I got this album the minute I woke up on Monday morning and have played nothing else. I don't get many Christmas gifts but D'Angelo gave one to all of us. I hope he knows how much us as his fans really love him!
Real musician, natural talent. Can’t get enough of his music - new and old. That Black Messiah album is poetry. On a shallower note - still sexy as hell
As a young kid growing up listening to his music, I am happy to say that I totally look up to this man musically. I have been inspired by the intellectual artist that he is. D' Angelo has been out before I was even born. Now that I am 20 and got to experience the "old" being "reconstructed" or brought back to life, its truly an honor to watch artists like him make history in music once again.
He's absolutely perfect. I love me some D' Angelo!
23 years later, his first album is still in my rotation. He truly is the Godfather of Neo- Soul !
Beautiful and open interview...he really got his point across. Love this dudes process and his ability to grow as an artist and sharing it with us REGARDLESS of the negatives people spit at him.
The world is lucky to have this guy and I hope one day he'll bless us with another album.
Always loved his music! Now I know I also love his sense of humor 😹 and the way he speaks about musicians that influenced him and his musical evolution. So glad to see this interview 6 years after the fact!
I know one thing D'Angelo has always been ahead of his time...so keep going your lane and open for u and only u!!! WE LOVE ALL YOUR MATERIAL. U create an album and produce GRAMMY'S...not many can do that with the breaks u took in-between them. IMPRESSIVE
I am absolutely enthralled with D'angelo. Black Messiah album is amazing and worth all the love.
This is priceless. I am even more impressed with D'Angelo after seeing this.
He's actually finer now, lol, back when he was interviewed in '97 when Brown Sugar came out he was FEELING himself, he seems cool and down to earth here. Can't blame the man, though ;-)
I know this comment is kind of late...but no...he wasn't "feeling himself" in 1997. The dude was like 23 at the time. He was young. He was just being young. He was always shy. He was shy even back then. He was already in a relationship with Angie Stone at that time.
FINALLY A CD WORTH PAYING MONEY FOR! D"ANGELO DOES IT AGAIN!
Another reason to love the Internet and RBMA
D'Angelo GOT IT!!!! Yes, SIR! Yes, SIR!!
D, man, We Missed You!! You *know* what music IS! Thank you for comIng back! I know you did it for you, but trust me my man, you also did it for me! 'Cause I'm so frickin' THANKFUL! 🙌 YES!! #DAngelosBack
Lovers of music in all forms will have NO problem with his direction.........
That's great music when a new generation some 20 years later hears something for the first time and it grabs their spirit like it did to a previous generation 20 years before.
I'll always love D'angelo!
This is the 2nd time I have listened to this interview. D is a music Savant. He is a music minister with a powerful ministry as he eluded to.
D'Angelo is the EXACT SAME THING that BLACK America needs in the 21st Century... Peace n Love Brooklyn...
Wow. His words at the end were so touching. Such a humble guy. I saw him in nyc last year and it was the greatest gig I've ever been to.
I saw him too. Forest Hills?
+Fabris Wowo Saw him at the what's called now, PlayStation theatre on Times Square, NYC
+Mark C ah ok.
A real musician. Such a rare entity these days. Hoping he keeps producing more magic.
I am thinking positive thoughts for D'Angelo. I used to think he was full of himself, but this interview made me see how sensitive he is. I understand why QuestLove has not given up on him. Heroin is no joke. He is so talented, and that is what I see....despite the clear signs of addiction. IBOGAINE, brother....please! We need you here.
Heroin? Never heard he was on that. He admitted to cocaine but I don't believe he was ever on heroin.
Well, heroin was supposed to be the inspiration for Brown Sugar. I used to think the song was about Angie Stone/marijuana until he fell off. It's a well known rumor. This interview made me think of it. Apparently, Eric Clapton (former heroin user) helped him get into a rehab center he founded in Antigua.
Didn't know he played the Apollo wow.. Now Because of this interview I'm pulling out that voodoo album and putting it in rotation with the new Roots album.
What a phenomenal interview! Interviewer was so knowledgeable and he put D’Angelo at ease. I loved this and he was the perfect person to interview him. D’Angelo definitely has mystique 😊 🙏🏿
We all know his music capilities are unreal. Now, listening to the way he describes music, instrustments, etc.
D'angelo ur a straight musical guienus!! Thank you for sharing your gift with us! #colorsmeatandpotatoes!
I love D'Angelo and his showmanship.... soo talented and fine!
D'Angelo is so Dope! I've been down since the Brown Sugar album. This Kat is very talented and reminds me of a younger generation Prince(Roger Nelson) in regards to his creativity. Everything he does is brilliant musically. Can't wait to Cop the Black Mesiah album! Such a huge fan!!!
Looking forward to the tour!!
Glad to see him back at it.
Me too....very talented brotha
The audience needs to go easy with the laughter for the H Town reference. Dino (RIP) was a beast!
I just saw dangelo in concert!!! It was amazing!!!
You are very lucky. The San Diego concert we were going to was canceled and we made the best of it in San Diego of course.
Thanks to Red Bull. It's a rare thing to hear D'angelo talk. Nelson George was fantastic too and a very welcome contribution from Questlove.
But we needed Jack Bauer to ask the question that was obviously banned.
excuse the ignorance, i'm just about to watch but is that 'why you go into a hiatus?'
BeNZerelli That's a good question too. I was alluding to when the album is due. The interview in GQ a while back goes into the personal stuff.

Devane2012 I'ma check it, thanks. Guttered there's no audio in the interview. People so sensitive with royalties and shit regardless of it's purpose.
*I needed to see this! Questlove was right on what he said about that era in Hip hop. I thought D'Angelo was a cool being, now I know. I hope that he drops an album soon. Pure talent. I'm glad that I saw this.*
