I remember the day I saw D'Angelo perform "Chicken Grease" live on the Chris Rock Show. It was September of 1999, I was 20 years old and when that song ended, I turned off the TV, got in my car and drove straight to the Border's Books to buy that CD. I put it in my CD player on the way home -- by the time I got home, I knew it was the first time I heard something that I knew was great before anyone had to tell me it was great. It's one of the best albums of my generation and certainly of all time. I don't think that album left my CD player for a month.

100%. But while Voodoo is an undenial 10/10, BM is a pretty good 9.5/10. It sounds like I'm saying it's not that good which is not the case. But I can fault BM on maximum 2 things while 20years later, the only thing I associate Voodoo with is genius, while BM isn't unshakable to me. And again, I gave it 9.5 which is damn near there.

Listen, I'm 33 years old. I grew up as a Church musician in Philly.(bass player) My older sister had the album when I was in 8th grade going into 9th. My go to albums before then were: Musiq Soulchild "I just want to sing" Stevie Wonder's "best of compilation" with "Songs in the key of life" being number one. Being a church boy I had to HIDE this album called "voodoo" from my parents because it was spooky good!!!! Like hair standing on the back of your neck damn good! Like invoking the """spirit""" good! Gritty and funky and Hip Hop and gospel and soul and African and black and not my parents music!... but still paid homage to everything that was good from their era but with hip-hop nuance! The album was so good, that I was literally scared of it. I gave it away out of religious 8th grade convictions LOL😆. I soon re-bought it... and learned every track note-for-note. It became My musical New Testament, to my parents 60s and 70s soul funk Foundation of old; one of those "coming of age albums" that got me not only through High School, but College and is still my go-to funky clean the house do stuff that I don't feel like doing music!!!! As with all of our best music I live to it!

And it's not only white people from the "Hipster" community that have discovered and praised Voodoo to death. I live in Colombia, and ever since I discovered that album in 2015, I've been playing it non-stop. It has became one of my all time favorites no doubt, and that's coming from someone who wasn't used to listening this kind of music at all before. I was more of a rock fan up until that point, but D'Angelo's Voodoo and a bunch of other great records gave me a whole new perspective in music. So I love, fuckin' looove that album! For real... and I don't think I will ever stop listening to it

Best album all time. Why can’t there be more. D needs Quest , Saadiq and the crew and create another perfect album. Voodoo... BEST BEST BEST ALBUM. Made everyone at the time look like amateurs. It was everything. Soul rap funk jazz r&b everything. Haven’t heard anything that good since. Maybe Saadiq Motown album is close. D’angelo Voodoo was and still is a masterpiece. Perfect album. Still listen to it.

Just not one weak point in this album. It's so seamless. For me, when Spanish Joints hits, that's the climax of the album. It's almost as if the album is telling you, oh you think we're through huh? Think again.

Honestly for me, Voodoo doesn't really get going until "The Root," song #8. Everything from song #1 to #7 is filler to me-"Send it on" song #5 is the exception. "The Root" to "Africa"- that's all I need.

JJDPRO MEDIAPRODUCTION my thing about that album is how different it was compared to anything else in the 90s. Quest’s drumming was so off kilter, D’angelos kegs and vocals were different as well. 90’s r&b largely consisted of electronic elements, voodoo sounds completely different. All analog and real instruments type of thing

    • @JJDPROMEDIAPRODUCTION

@@jungle-wav1322 Yeas. But, does different means good? I guess it's personal taste. It does nothing for me. Like he was lost, trying to find something, but could not find it.. I knew he was under a lot of pressure from his record company to produce something that was as good as the brown sugar record. That's how we got the "How does it feel groove"..
The Great barry Gordy ( Founder of Motown) Great songwriter, would hold quality control meetings with his staff and would play new records form his artist. And, He would ask " would buy this record ( $1.00) or sandwich..? If the record was a hit and good, then the votes would be for the record. if not, then it would for a sandwich.
My musical taste are not that eklektik. I like a good story, a good bridge, and a good hook.

@@JJDPROMEDIAPRODUCTION Different doesn't always mean good but, in this case, it does because R&B sucked (and sucks even more now). I had stopped listening to commercial radio because most of it was mediocre. I'm not really into formulas which is what Motown became. I was into Jimi, Sly, James Brown, P-Funk from my parents' time. I was reminded of that listening to Prince's early albums and work. When I heard "Voodoo", I heard a little bit from these artists/groups but in a new way. That's why it's not formula and why I love it.
