From my experience, the older grey grill Engls sound even better. The old Fireball 60 is one of the best sounding metal amps I've played. Can't get a bad sound out of that one. Some might think they sound harsh compared to the fatter, smoother new ones.

The way you can play the song sequences so exactly the same every time is simply amazing!
I'm glad that you could do the direct comparisons of the Engl amps while you still had them all together. It pretty much confirms what I originally thought. In order of my personal preference: The Fireball, then sort of close is the Powerball and in the distance, the Blackmore. The 5150 sounds warmer than any of the Engl amps. The TSL just sounds more Marshally. I think you have a very good TSL because the few that I've played I didn't care for. I prefer DSL's. Marshall Plexi's and 800's RULE!

Great vid again man!! Thanks for comparing the Powerball with the TSL. The Powerball is amazing to my ears...I like how it is scooped!! I tried an EQ pedal (lead channel) reducing 500 (-6db), 1k (-12), 2k (-6) in the loop of the TSL602 and although the loop is parallel (unlike TSL100) it does sound interesting on standard E tuning with a TS9, passive SH5 and 2xCelestion G12H-80 (Wolverine) speakers both with the shift on and off....I think the TSL takes EQ pedal in the loop pretty well....give it a try for yourself :)

Great stuff Euge. I had the Blackmore and now have a 6505. Both great amps. The Blackmore does have that metallic high end going on, but that translates great when miced and recorded. The Peavey sounds fuller but not as quick. But they're both great. The main difference I found was that the Blackmore sounded better at low volumes than cranked, while the 6505 is the other way around. So, if I had to choose one for the studio/apartment, I'd pick the Blackmore (unless you use an attenuator). For a band, the 6505/5150 is unbeatable for me.

I hear exactly what you mean with the Fireball Mid Punch you like so much. From how you set them up it seemed like the Powerball had more headroom to add some more to it though. Like no dials pushed to max. Since you seem to be a "maxed out mids" type of sound it gives me the impression that the Powerball has a more bassy character to it?
I love engls and my Engl Gigmaster 30, though I am trying to figure out which big brother amp of engl is most likely going to have my sound. Recently got a Seymour Nazgûl for more mid bite chugs and a Black Winter Neck.

Being a fireball owner myself I can tell you that you are using the clean channel somewhat wrong. If you use the A and B master you can lower the gain to less than 1 and turn up the master a little bit for just the clean master. The clean can make high gain pickups sound almost acoustic, it’s one of the cleanest cleans I have used, it’s not like a plexi
In that regard you don’t have to turn the volume down on your guitar. I have run 24v mod EMG 707 and gotten acoustic sounds on it. I have run Seymour 59’s, I have run EMG 85 18v, and blackouts AHB-2 with 18v and many others. All sound pristine clean with no break up it only breakers up if you go past about 4.

The Powerball II is more articulate and versatile. It also has a very good Crunch channel which sounds very close to '80s Heavy Metal especially with a TS pedal in front. And I think the Lead channel you used sounded less compressed than the Fireball's without losing heaviness. And that Marshall sounded REALLY good and could keep up with the modern generation. 5150 was not impressing compared to the others, it was a little loose and it didn't had Engl's articulation or Marshall's punch.

I disagree with the II being more articulate. The I has more upper mids and the II has more lower mids. That's the only tonal difference I hear. It might be your setup that is clearer with lower mids. I listed to it on sony wh1000s, cell phone volume and sennheiser momentums(I'm nerotic af). I'm looking for an amp to buy and the fireball is one I'm looking at. Fireball I/II, laney ironheart, orange rockerverb III and evh stealth. I'm leaning towards the ironheart rn but if they were all the same price i think I'd get the rockerverb. All unbelievable amps.

Blackmore seems to have a harsher thinner tone, but an almost smoother saturated gain sound at times.
Between these 3, Peavey 5150, and the 5150 EL34 + Stealth, which do you think is the best sounding amp for old school heavy metal and hair metal? (Think Iron Maiden and Ratt, which are fairly.different sounds)

Yes. That’s my favourite amp of them. Well I love also my 5150 block letter. But the amp really doesn’t matter that much since the sound comes from the player’s hands: what is being played and how. The amps just amplify what they get and add their own ”personality” but the most is up to the player 👌.
