- I just got a new Monitor for my Mac Studio. This is a review of the LG 4K 32 Ultrafine ergo 32un880.
This is one of the best Monitors for your Mac on a budget, and probably one of the best monitors for the mac studio that's not a apple studio display or a pro display XDR

Great video! I just got the monitor after watching this video. Cheers!
hello! great review :) could you tell me whats the total monitor height ( from desk height to the top of the monitor ) when you set it up in the lowest stand position ? I got a desk with a top shelf and i'm not sure if it will able to fit :D Would really appreciate that because i can't find any info about that! Thanks :)
Just bought this monitor yesterday for my MacBook Pro 14".
What settings did you changed for the best/similar IQ and colors compared to your MacBook?
How about text clarity on Mac ? Is it sharp enough?
I’m in the same situation. I have a 27” 2013 iMac, and ordered the Studio. I’m looking for a monitor and this review was very helpful!
Glad I could be of service 🙏🏼. Just keep in mind that the iMac has a glossy screen and this has an anti glare coating . So the look is a bit different. Unfortunately almost no manufactures makes a glossy screen in this size apart from apples insanely expensive Pro Display XDR
@@varerkars Does this monitor support 2 different input sources at the same time by dividing the screen in half ? For example on the left PC on the right MAC.
@@Sebartus Yes it supports through LG software
Is it the best with the macbook pro m1? Is it really 4k
Do you know how to use the monitor with the laptop fully closed? Thank you!
Hello
I have a question: what is your maximum height from the table to the bottom of the monitor?
Just ordered mine !! 👍👍
Sweet. Leave a comment with feedback when you get it. Might help other people looking it up
@@varerkars from where did you get it ? I have ordered around a week ago and the dealer said me that it will take a little longer because they have to import it from china and because of current situations in China it might be delay
@@skullcandy7934 reseller on amazon had it here in dubai
Hi! I'm struggling with the same issue...coming from a 2017 iMac 27", upgrading to a Mac Studio and in the rabbit hole searching a good monitor. I'm a retoucher working with hi-end images so I'm looking for a very good and accurate color response.....what's your opinion about that? I'd appreciate your feedback.... tnx!!!
It’s good , very Color accurate, but the blacks don’t look quite washed out due to the Abu reflective coating.
Thanks for a great review, I just bought the 2021 14 inch M1 pro Macbook because I want to get into video editing with FCPX which is only available for Mac, I own the Panasonic GH5 and the Ninja V so I can record in 10 bit Pro res, I have a Dell ultrasharp 27 inch ips monitor which is a great monitor but it's only 1440p and a bit small for video editing, now I not only need to learn FCPX but also how to use a Mac LoL, I've never used a Mac before but I'm slowly getting there, I have a desktop tower that I built myself which has the AMD Ryzen 3700X and 64GB ram so I could just use Adobe premier pro but the licence fee is extortionate and FCPX is just a one off payment plus you can use it on as many Macs as you like, so I think I'm going to buy the LG UltraFine 880 Ergo 4k to complete my new setup after I've re-mortgaged the house and sold the kids LoL
Hahaha. If your new to editing I would highly recommend FCPX or every davinci resolve. They are far more efficient and we’ll optimised for mac. Also the magnetic timeline in FCPX is much easier to learn as a beginner. I also have the dell ultra sharp 1440 on right of my LG 32 and it’s a great monitor with similar image quality. A comfortable resolution on the LG will have the same look as a 27 inch 1440 p monitor, but with more screen Realestate . Hope you enjoy your video editing journey. You definitely have some great gear for the job.
@@varerkars Thanks mate I just ordered that monitor perhaps you should apply for a job at LG marketing LoL
hey ! thanks for the video ! I'm about to get the mac studio too, and thinking about getting this monitor. How do you connect it to your mac studio, by usb-c ? Is it a plug & play thing, or was there some struggle ? many thanks in advance
USb c plug and play. As simple as it gets
@@varerkars aweoms to hear) thanks !
@@varerkarsim getting the m2 pro mac mini is it possible to connect via hdmi
@@proshooters1 yup
@@proshooters1 though I would suggest using usb c, it gives you more control
I have this monitor as well and while it's generally quite decent, it does exhibit a few weird issues with my Mac Studio. It'll wake up from sleep without a problem, but if I do a full restart or cold boot the LG display often won't turn on or detect the USB-C connection. I then have to power cycle the LG over and over until it finally randomly connects. The blacks also have that typical IPS milky washiness depending on viewing angle and I find the joystick and OSD to be pretty clunky. Despite these quirks I do like the monitor and find the image quality to be mostly excellent. I just wish these 3rd party companies had the same attention to detail and quality control as Apple.
Hmm … havnt had any issues with connectivity. The OSD does suck with the joystick, but I would suggest downloading the control app for mac that allows you to control the brightness, contrast and volume from the computer. Works pretty well with this monitor. If you adjust the settings the black levels look decent , but I think the main issue is the anti reflective coating which makes the blacks look a little washed out.
@@varerkars hello are you using usbC provided or other thunderbolt cable? My Mac studio ultra will to detect with usbc only hdmi
@@zaddyjr8504 the provided usb c cable works great
@@varerkars initially did work had to use usbC to HDMI. Then tried every port worked one Front port then tried rear port started working. Got bummed out initially. Ordered a thunderbolt 4 cable anyways.
Bro are you still using it ? And does it have ips glow?
Could anyone clarify to me whether or not scaling the display to make text legible takes away from the image quality? (As in, I WANT my 4K display to emit 4K quality, but also to have legible text at the same time. I feel like lowering the resolution to make text legible defeats the purpose of buying a high quality display.) I'm really torn on buying anything other than the studio display because of all of the scaling issues I've been hearing about. Any help would be appreciated.
Is you lower the resolution in hidpi mode it will downsample a 6k image to 4k image on this screen with the icons and fonts looking like it would on the Pro Display XDR. Text doesn’t look as sharp as a true 5k studio display but I’m not disappointed with the quality of the monitor and for things like video playback you get full 4k
If you have to choose between LG 32UN880 & Benq EW3280U, which one would you recommend ?
I mostly do coding & in freetime watch movies.
Both have similar image quality , but the Benq has better sound quality and better eye stain management if you care about those things
apple need to bring back target monitor mode. I have a perfectly good 5k iMac I would love to the able to use as a monitor with the mac studio somehow. I know apple need to sell products but with all their care for the environment plans it doesn’t seem right to me. I am kind of glad in a way the monitor and computer is separate now, at least I will be able to keep the same screen next time as long as the interface is the same but who knows what’s next in a few years time.
Absolutely agree. I wish they had target display mode for the iMacs. Feels like such a waste of an amazing screen.
Isn't it possible for some IT hardware geek to McGiver it so you could use it as a monitor ?
In terms of specs what is the difference between LG UN650 with this monitor as it is much cheaper the UN880 ..
Mostly the usb c compatibility with power delivery, in built USB hub , higher brightness build quality and the stand. Rest of the specs are almost the same, the panel is almost identical except the brightness
How is the text sharpness? I bought a 1440 32' from dell and it looks awful. Also even though it is an IPS display, the corners look extremely washed out. Maybe it's leaking light I don't know. I'm sitting around 40-50 cm away from the screen but I can still see it, How is this monitor regarding this? Have you noticed any leaking light or something like that? Thanks
Text sharpness is good , but of course not as good as a 5k. The mac renders the image at 6 k and down samples to 3k approx for good visibility, this causes a very slight text blurriness as it’s not running native res. The panel looks very uniform in terms of Color and brightness while loosing some corner sharpness/brightness at extreme angles. But straight on it looks great
1440p is not high enough pixel density at 32” size in my opinion .
@@varerkars Thank you very much! I think I'll buy this one!
@@varerkars Yeap, evidently 1440p is not high enough, that is true.
I have the lg 32un880-b and when I hook up my MacBook Pro and watch RUclips video / Disney + , etc, To me the 4k content doesn't look 4k when I go to full screen on the LG monitor.
Is there a setting I should turn off on my computer? I haven't touched any setting on the monitor.
My computer settings MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019)
Processor 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
Memory 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Graphics Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
MacBook Pro set at Main display
LG HDR 4k Monitor as Extended Display
Resolution default for display
Color Profile HDR 4k
Refresh Rate 60 Hertz
And I have my Mabook pro in Closed (Clamshell Mode) and just use my 32 LG to work on.
Make sure you are in retina mode in your display setting. You should see an option that shows hidpi
@@varerkars
I have Built in Retina display on MacBook Pro selected: use as Main display
The LG HDR 4k: use as extended display
I'm using the usb-c connection that came with the LG monitor also
Are you saying I should have my LG set as: use mirror for built in for retina display, instead of use as extended display?
is this monitor a good buy in 2024
Still a good option, but i would check out some of the new oled options
Why buy a 4k monitor if you are going to run it at 1440p? That kind of defeats the purpose. And in the next sentence you complain it's not as sharp as 5k... Yeah, obviously it isn't when you aren't even using the 4k...
It’s not running at 1440p it’s at 4k down sampleded from retina 6k. That just how apple does things. If you run it native 4k text is too small to read
@@varerkars do you think the performance of the macbook pro takes a significant hit doing this? I have a 2019 intel core i9 with Radeon Pro 560X 4 GB and it already runs pretty hot so I am wondering if the scaling procedure it has to go through to get the the appropriate resolutions will slow my mac down a lot.
@@andyrausse3446 I have heard some people complain about performance issues doing this, but considering the specs of your machine, it shouldn’t be a problem. My m1 MacBook Air handles it with no problem
@@varerkars ok thanks for the reply. Well it arrives in the next couple of hours so I suppose the only way to find out is to plug it in and see! I had a 27 inch thunderbolt display which has just died on me so hoping the picture crispness will at least match that with the added bonus of more screen space for productivity 🤞🏻
@@andyrausse3446let me know how it goes. The thundbolt/ iMac display has a glossy screen , and this one is Matt , which takes a while to get used to, but after that I’m sure you’ll enjoy the screen.
