  • Locking or Campbellocking is a dance art form with improvisational move called the lock.
    These were created by Don Campbell and put to a specific rhythm and style in the nightclubs of Los Angeles in the early 1970s.
    The first time we ever saw Michael Jackson dancing Locking, was February 2, 1977, when The Jacksons 7th TV show was aired.
    The Jackson performed a Locking routine with Dom DeLuise, dancing to a medley between "That's The Way (I Like It)" and "Pick Up The Pieces".
    The consecutive second time was February 16, 1977, The Jacksons' 9th TV show, performing "I Shot The Sheriff" with a Locking routine mixed with other dance styles.
    It wasn't until the Dangerous World Tour that Michael started showing his Locking skills on stage.

    When you watch Michaels movie video Ghost, the lockers and poppers are very well known OG'S IN THOSE STYLES.. THE POPPERS WERE 4 Electric Boogaloos : Skeeter Rabbit RIP( cousin of Pete and Sam and not the Original OG Skeeter Rabbit from the GoGo Bros. ), ROBOT DANE, POPPIN PETE, AND FOUNDER of Electric Boogaloos AND BROTHER (to Poppin Pete) Boogaloo Sam. Then there were 3 Lockers who were OG's from the Original Lockers, there was founder and Originator of locking Don Campbellock Campbell, Greg Campbellock Jr. Pope, And Shabba Doo (Adolfo Quinones) . All 3 of these OG LOCKERS have passed on RIP MASTER LOCKERS.. SO TO ME I WATCH MICHAELS MOVIE VIDEO "GHOST" MANY TIMES OVER BECAUSE NOT ONLY TO SEE THESE MEN IN ACTION, BUT THE REST OF MICHAELS DANCERS ARE ALWAYS ON POINT AND VERY ENTERTAINING.. BUT I AM IN AWE OF THE POPPERS AND LOCKERS AS I GREW UP WATCHING THEM IN THE 70'S ON SOUL TRAIN.. JUST A NOTE , MICHAEL ALSO DOES THE COBRA ALOT THAT WAS TAUGHT TO HIM BY A man who toured with him and helped teach him Poppin and the Cobra , POPPIN TACO (BRUNO FALCON) , WHO WAS ALSO PART OF THE ELECTRIC BOOGALOOS AND DANCED WITH SHABBA DOO , POPPIN PETE, PUPPET BOOZER, BOOGALOO SHRIMP, ANNA LOLLIPOP SANCHEZ WHO WERE JUST TEENS WHEN SHABBA DOO WHO WAS OLDER ORGANIZED THEM INTO A DANCE GROUP. AND MOST FROM BOTH GROUPS WENT ON TO BE IN THE movies BREAKIN AND ELECTRIC BOOGALOO 2 .. NOW YOU CAN SEE WHY I AM SO IN AWE OF THE "GHOST" MOVIE VIDEO ..MICHAEL HAD SOME VERY RESPONSIBLE DANCE INSTRUCTORS THRU OUT HIS CAREER THAT NOT ONLY CARRIED OVER TO HIS TOURS BUT INTO HIS VIDEOS AND SINCE THEY ALL WERE AROUND WHEN DANCES WERE FRESH AND NEW AND JUST BEING SHOWN TO THE DANCERS OF THE WORLD THEY ALL CO MINGLED . I AM GLAD I WAS THERE AT THE CONCEPTION TO SEE THEIR DANCES DEVELOPE AND GET A FOOTING HOLD FROM FANS FAR AND WIDE.. I AM FOREVER A POPPER AND LOCKER AND A LOVER OF MICHAEL JACKSON AND ALL THE DANCERS I NAMED IN THIS COMMENT SECTION AND THOSE I COULD NOT FIT IN THIS RESPONSE...

      Wow that's a history of locking right there! Also loved Toni Basil before "Mickey" fame was an excellent locker in her own right! Shabba Doo performance on Soul Train in 83' when he returned as a feature performer is one of my favorite clips on you tube! Dancing to Kleer 'Get Tough"!

    • @kashiaroundtheworld

      @@stonedog23 overall no one can sing dance and write music and songs and entertain as well as Michael Jackson. In vocals, there are few famous people that can rival him because of his time, diverse genre, range, strength, incredible live vocals plus while dancing (which most great singers can't do), and interpretation . Pavarotti, Freddy Mercury, Whitney, Aretha, Frank, Luther, Jackie Wilson... I'm already running out of challengers. Then when you add the dancing on top, there are even fewer who come close. Maybe just Jackie Wilson and Sammy DJ at that point.

      The whole package! His voice is pitch perfect and has a high octave which is unique when he does falsetto. Also his dance ability and musical genius when he sang melodies and chords from his head, Because he couldn't actually read music and played some instruments too. 🤴🎤🌻🌍🌠

    As a dancer, the fact that I feel his very last locking sequence was actually the best made me cry 6:15. The smoothness, the variation, the minor movements to create unexpected line and directional change is the best of this entire video and he was 50! 👑 I will never stop dancing. He is proof that you can get better with age 😭❤️

      I have to agree with you on that one.. in the Ghost movie video, on set as LOCKERS ,HE HAD THE ORIGINATOR OF LOCKING , DON CAMPBELLOCK CAMPBELL, ALONG WITH GREG CAMPBELLOCK Jr. POPE, AND ADOLFO SHABBA DOO QUINONES, ALL 3 OF THESE MEN WERE IN THE ORIGINAL LOCKERS DANCE TROUPE, AND GOT THEIR START AND EXPOSURE ON SOUL TRAIN. ALL 3 OF THESE MEN HAVE PASSED ON RIP...THAT SHOW DID MORE FOR STREET DANCE BY BRINGING IT OUT TO AN AUDIENCE OF FOLKS WHO WERE READY TO SEE IT, EXPERIENCE IT, AND TRY IT. YOU CAN SEE MICHAEL LEARNED FROM THE BEST OF THE BEST. BUT HE HAD TO PUT WORK IN FOR HIM TO TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL. HE HAD TO HAVE THE TALENT AND SKILLS TO GO ALONG WITH IT. I HAVE ANOTHER COMMENT ON THIS SITE GIVING PROPS TO THE POPPERS HE USED IN GHOST, WHO WERE JUST LIKE THE LOCKERS ,THEY WERE ALL MASTERS IN THEIR STYLE, I HAVE NAMED THEM AS THEY WERE THE ELECTRIC BOOGALOOS WITH ORIGINATOR SAM BOOGALOO SOLOMON AND CREW, AGAIN THEY ARE ALL LISTED IN MY FIRST COMMENTS..

      @@joelmorgan6129I assume you mean the bit at 2:36 in the music video? He does the same move during the Billie Jean breakdown in Copenhagen 1992, albeit not with the same proficiency.
      I agree that Jam is definitely the exception to this rule though.

    • @VinVonVoom
      @VinVonVoom 2 года назад +3

      @@joelmorgan6129It's pretty similar, it doesn't have the left turn but it's got the same upper body movements. Scream is another good one, although the only really unique move there is the head bob thing 3 minutes in. I'd definitely love to see the full takes of the dancing parts in that and Jam.
      My point is that generally the live versions tend to have better dancing. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, The Way You Make Me Feel, In The Closet, They Don't Care About Us, You Are Not Alone and Blood on the Dance Floor are pretty clearly have more interesting and dynamic dancing in their live performances.

    • @VinVonVoom
      @VinVonVoom 2 года назад +2

      @@joelmorgan6129I absolutely agree about HIStory Tour, after Copenhagen and onwards are just kind of okay, even if the vocals are really good. The early 1997 shows with the full setlist were absolutely spectacular, as are the late 1996 shows, but then it just kind of goes on a decline from then on.

    This is better. Loads more clips I knew were missing from the first version. Good job. Notice how tight he did that move at the beginning of the tour ancient how floppy/limp he got with it by the time of Bucharest and then even floppier by 93. By the way.... There's a clip of jam live at 1:47 I've never seen before. Where's the full video on RUclips please? What country? Looks like maybe Werchter .

      Nice to see you again over here :)
      You can see on description the timing of every video, with name and city, but the video you are asking for is Rotterdam, it was just leaked yesterday, and I was veery fast adding it in my video, it was like the last piece to finally render it and let it go.

      @@MichaelJacksonMultiverse oh yeah I shouldve looked there 😆👀 thanks. And no wonder Ive ever seen it before. It only leaked yesterday! I was thinking "how have I not seen this before? 😐lol. Gonna check it out . Oh and I think there's one, maybe two jam 93 intro clips I'd not seen either, somehow. They look so similar to one another. Like 2 of those jam 93 intro clips look almost identical. I'm guessing they're both from Mexico, different nights. I'll go check your description text anyway. Cheers

      @@spookyencounters9392 I got really tired of searching for that dance step on every pro/amateur footage we have on RUclips, I had for reference the Dangerous and History tour dates and cities, so i was searching for every city he went if there was some video of it, and I couldn't find more than what you see. The next of these series is going to be Popping Compilation, so if you want to share something I'm always open to suggestions and advices.

    Just an observation: wondering if the 70s clip was the inspiration for Fred Berry? His moves seemed similar & not taken from Saturday night fever!

    • @MichaelJacksonMultiverse
      @MichaelJacksonMultiverse  2 года назад

      You can search for The Lockers (Campbellockers) on Soul Train! they are the OGs who inspired these dance steps.

      Shabba Doo was John Travolta's dance coach for Saturday Night Fever and both him and Fred Berry were a part of The Lockers

    Multiverse wtf, you posted virtually the SAME lock set throughout the whole vid(save Speed Demon variant which actually is more his typical hand flares and points, more Travolta inspired than Campbell style locking). He's got SO many other variants of locking that you coulda posted? Post-Billie Jean sets, James Brown sets etc. The analytical skills from this channel are top notch so I'm surprised this vid didn't do justice to MJ's lock range at all. Very disappointing for a compilation.

    • @MichaelJacksonMultiverse

    Why don't you do a video of Jackson doing his pop lock moves split screen side by side with MARQUESE SCOTT or POPPING JOHN?
    Moonwalkers say Jackson is the best of all time, right?
    There's some split screen footage in this presentation so there's really no reason to deny my request, is there?
    Put up or shut up.
    Show and prove the Moonwalkers claim.

      Ehhh not really. He was a regular on Soul Train and used to hang out with the dancers from Soul Train and was influenced by The Lockers who were formed in 1971/2. He admired their style hence he incorporated the Uncle Sam, Scoot Bot, Leo Walk in some of his moves. He was brilliant though
