Yall really need to see some old vids from the 50's. Back then he was a WILD MAN, that long blond hair and sweat flying, that piano taking a beating and that mad mad energy connecting to the kids going crazy on the dance floor!! He was a wild thing back in the day!!
The guitarist playing with Jerry Lee here is the legendary Dave Edmunds. An artist well worth checking out in his own right.

One of the true originals - and keeping it a lot more staid than he normally did! A true showman, one of the real bad boys of rock, and still shakin' it into his 80s. He only died a few months ago - RIP.
Back in the day when we danced all night to music like this - and always went to sleep tired but with a big smile on our face!

I was going through my old records and I found I have Peggy Sue and Sweet Little Sixteen on 45. They were my mom's when she was a kid. I have The Platters, Elvis, The Beatles and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. I have Jerry Lee on LP.
My mom named me for the song Peggy Sue.
..."Class of 76"...This was one of Jerry's more reserved performances...he once poured gasoline into the piano and lit it on fire while finishing his set...when he finished he stepped back, bowed and walked off stage, you can see it re-enacted in the movie of Jerry's life...a must see! Always watch a live. performance of Jery Lee.

I'd say reserved... there are B&W performances where he almost stands on his head while he plays the piano.
He’s older here, which I’m not knocking. I saw him when he was in his 70s, and he was still great. Y’all need to give a listen (and look) to some young Jerry Lee Lewis.
That story is not true. Jerry Lee did not set fire to a piano at that show, or any other show. The 'Great Balls of Fire' movie is not a very accurate portrayal of his life.
Jerry was so wild and cool. The man could play the hell of the piano. He rocked the stage.
"The Killer". Jerry Lee was fabulous. I had the pleasure of seeing him live twice. The crowd was just as animated both times.
He was definitely entertaining. His nickname was Killer. He was pretty wild and I remember when he set his piano on fire. He always got the crowds worked up. Thanks for this. 👏👏🇨🇦

I saw these greats of Rock and Roll when they came to Melbourne, Australia, in the late 1980s. It was one of the most amazing nights of music and nostalgia. Each artist played for about 20 to 30 minutes.
There are video clips of that show in Melbourne 1989, on youtube. Jerry Lee's performance was stunning, that night.

I've never heard this before. I agree with your opinions. It's very obvious that the music back in the day was all about having fun. It seems that that era simply had so much joy. People just having a great time. It's something that somehow we have seemed to have lost. We need to get it back.

I recommend finding a video of him from the 1950s, when he was new on the scene and even more frenetic than he is here.
There's video of an early 60s British TV performance, they let the kids crowd around his piano - the video / sound quality isn't great but gives an idea of his frenetic energy. Of course his 1964 "Live at the Star Club, Hamburg" album is off the charts.

Glad to hear you mention the fact that rock 'n" roll was meant to be danced to. Disco gets a bad rap but one of its positive characteristics is its danceability which to me in some ways is far more redeeming than more 'serious' music. You should check out Fats Domino and Little Richard as two other great performers who put the piano in the rock 'n' roll spotlight.
This a pretty good live performance but I highly recommend one of his early live b&w performances from the 50s. Nice reaction, you are clearly enjoying!

FYI: Jerry Lee Lewis (muscian), Mickey Gilly (muscian and owner of Gills which was in the John Travolta movie Urban Cowboy), and Jimmyu Swagertt ( evangelical preacher) all are cousins.
Jerry Lew started ( as far as I remeber) started in the 50s
Swagertt had a huge hatred for rock music and he even went so far as to made some very hurtful remarks about the Christmas rock band Stryper. sadly, he found himself is a mess of his own. his confessionary meltdown was legendary.
If you want to see him in his prime ! Whatch Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lotta SHAKIN live in England in 1964 . You will not believe how close the crowd is and how much energy it was ! You’ll love it ❤❤

Yeah, I'm 80 now and was a young teen when he first came onto the scene. This was a really tamed down version of his original shows. Brings back a certain new vitality to my old bones. I gotta tell ya! LOL Quite the showman in spite of what a lot of parents thought. LOL

Fun fact: whole Lotta Shakin goin on was actually written by a man named Dave "Curlee" Williams. Jerry Lee Lewis used to get a lot of his inspiration from african American night clubs and dive bars back in the 1950s. He was so inspired by their Style of music and performing, it’s what helped mold him into the performer he eventually became, a lot of the credit he gave to the black community for inspiring him. He’s my pawpaws cousin ❤ I’ve heard some stories through the years
Love my Jerry Lee. ❤️ He was the BEST! This is a restrained "elder statesman" type of performance and he still has amazing energy. He hit the scene in 1957 but, to me, he was at his peak in the late '60s. Miss him!!

I remember seeing Jerry Lee Lewis as the headliner in a Rock-and-roll show in Norfolk, VA in 1961 when I was in the Navy (big mistake). He took his jacket off and tossed it into the crowd. One lady in the audience said, "Take it all off." He said, "You stick around for the next show and you'll see more." A large segment of the audience applauded. He blew the doors off the auditorium. BTW, in this show was Ruth Brown, The Coasters and others I don't remember. Needless to say "The Killer" was the most memorable.
I am 71 and still get up and shake it when Jerry Lee plays that piano😎

I saw Jerry Lee Lewis in 1976 with my Mom and sister at a dinner club in Southwest Ohio. It was fantastic. My sister and I got the chance to see him again at a casino in Indiana in the early 2000's and he still put on quite a show. He is a first cousin to Mickey Gilley and evangelist Jimmy Swaggert.
I can't remember who he opened up for back when they all toured together in the 50's...Elvis or Chuck. But he lit his piano on fire and said "follow that!!"

I switched to independent groups in the 90's. Lot of dancing, jumping, friendly mosh pits. It was all about having a good time. Reel Big Fish, Catch 22, Bad Fish, Social Distortion, Less Than Jake. Punchline etc.

My stepfather got to see Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley two of the best rock and roll and country western piano players ever they both did their sets and at the end for the encore they push the pianos so they face each other it was three song set for each six songs all together last song was Great Balls Of Fire where both litter pianos on fire as they pounded out the song, that would've been some show.
I'm sorry, but I don't think that ever happened.

Ah, a hometown musician for me..I was born/raised/live in Shreveport, Louisiana..Jerry Lee Lewis, along with his fellow famous musicians, his cousins Mickey Gilley (famous country star) and Jimmy Swaggert (famous preacher/televangelist), grew up in Ferriday Louisiana..all three were born with genius musical talent and all three could play piano beautifully. I believe only Jimmy Swaggert is still alive and he still plays piano beautifully. Their life/back stories from abject poverty to fame is quite the read and a few books and movies with details are interesting if you wanted to dig deeper.

When I was kid I go to see him at Lanier Music Land in Gainesville GA, my father's cousin owned the place and we got to see concerts for free. That night Jerry Lee threw the piano seat into the crowd!
Check out his performance of this song done live on the Gary Moore TV show - when he was much younger.... You can see why parents in the Fifties were saying, "What's wrong with these kids, listening to music like this?"

I think the venue was in Rome in 1989...I saw the identical show, with one or two changes of performers, in Melbourne, that same year...before the Rome concert which was entitled LEGENDS OF ROCK AND ROLL...Jerry performed a whole lot more in Rome, than he did in Melbourne...This version was FORTY TWO years after the release of the original [1957]...AMAZING!! I am 85.5 years 'young'...born 1938. I was READY for what was gonna hit me around 1955, and I'm STILL READY!! I can burn-up the floor...BELIEVE ME!! Thanks for this great track, I'll be checkin' in more!! My BEST to you both...KEEP ON!!

So hot in its time (late 50s), that now, 60+ yrs later, "Whole lotta shakin' goin' on" is still widely used as a general pop culture catch phrase (in digital media, TV, news reports, movies, etc.). The power of music.

He wasn't nicknamed the Killer because he played by the rules. Someone said that he played the piano with every pointed appendage on his body except one, and using that one would have gotten him arrested. Believe it or not, he was evangelist Jimmy Swaggart's cousin, and Jerry Lee's sacred music was as powerful as the secular stuff.

Part of the 1990's grunge and depressing music was the disenfranchisement after 12 years of Reagan/Bush. A lot of the (American) younger population was tired of the old trickle-down nonsense. That's what I found from talking to a lot of people. Thank you for doing this song by "the Killer!"
