They made a movie about him and Dennis Quaid did a great job portraying Jerry Lee. There is a scene from that movie where they recreated the infamous night that Jerry Lee burned down the piano while playing it because he was mad he had to go on before Chuck Berry. You can find it on RUclips or watch the whole movie - it's called Great Balls of Fire.

Jerry Lee is one of the original rock and rollers. Elvis, Johnny Cash, Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson and Jerry Lee were among those who all toured together travelling in car caravans for shows. Imagine that amount of talent just driving down the road together on some night in the 1950s in Tennessee.

I know you thought that was a fired up performance, but that is the most reserved performance of that song I have ever seen him perform. Slower tempo and he didn't even kick the piano bench out of his way so he could really get down. A truly "spirited" performer!

Hey Britt. It's story time lol. Once upon a time there were 3 young boys. They were cousins. All 3 learned piano. One was named Jerry Lee Lewis who went on to become one of the biggest stars of a genre that morphed from rockabilly to rock n roll. The 2nd was named Mickey Gilley. He became one of the biggest stars in Country Music. He also owned a bar/club in Texas that was so big they had rodeos in it. The 3rd was named Jimmy Swaggart. He went on to become a televangelist who used music to preach to his congregation. Jerry has been a wild child his whole life. He would tear up a piano. He played with his feet. He played on his knees with his back to the piano. He supposedly even set a piano on fire on stage one night, and continued playing it. Find some older vids of his live performances. It makes this look very tame.

Jerry Lee Lewis was one of the more flamboyant & wilder rock & roll singers of the time in the 50's-60's. He was nicknamed "The Killer". His piano playing & showmanship were legendary. He had a lot of hits such as "Breathless", "Wild One", "High School Confidential", "What'd I Say", "Another Place, Another Time" etc. His career faltered for a time when he married his 13-year-old cousin.

He always had a bad boy image (and attitude) especially at concerts. The story is told that he was at a concert and expected to play last as a show of top billing. They let someone else have the top spot and put him second to last. He was told the other guy was a better performer and that was why he got top spot. Jerry went out played his heart out and had the crowd screaming. He played this song last and as he finished he set the piano on fire. As he walked back stage past all the stunned people, he looked the theater manager and the other performer in the face and said “Top that.” That was one of my moms favorite stories about Jerry and this song.

It actually did happen. It was at the Paramount Theater in Brooklyn New York. The show also featured Buddy Holly and the Crickets, the Chantels and Chuck Berry. Alan Freed produced the show and decided that Chuck Berry, being the bigger star at the time, would close the show. Jerry Lee, not to be outdone set his piano on fire at the conclusion of his performance, walked offstage and told Chuck as he passed him, “Top That!”

That opening riff in this version is in sloooooow motion compared to the way he played it originally, and he *_still_* got faster through the song until the tempo was just *_blistering!_* In his 20's the opening of this song was faster the fastest part of this version, and went up from there.

This story happened when Chuck Berry was to close a show, even though Jerry Lee was more successful at the time:
Lewis took to the stage and sang some of his signature songs, including “A Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” before taking it all to the next level.
The crowd was howling with excitement, police had to keep them at bay and stop them from climbing on stage. The thrill and adrenaline only fueled Lewis to keep going and he jumped right into “Great Balls of Fire.”
Just a verse in, he kicked the stool back from the piano, doused the open piano with some gasoline he had in a Coke bottle, and threw a match into the whole mess before continuing to sing his heart out.
Flames licking at the piano’s lid, Lewis finished his song to the insane roar of the audience and walked off stage before issuing one simple statement to Berry:
“I want to see you follow that, Chuck.”
After this incident, no one wanted to follow Jerry Lee Lewis on any show.

He jumped up, kicked the bench back and threw his hands back , behind his head. One of his hands hit the fan blades and he got a pretty bad cut. He had been imbibing a little and was feeling no pain. He wrapped a rag around his hand, had another drink and finished his show. The owner took him to town, to get stitched up. Those were the days.

Jerry came just before Elvis. They nicknamed his Killer. However, once he married his younger cousin, people turned against him. It took him years to get it back.

Known as "The Killer" Jerry Lee Lewis was one of the big artists of Rock n Roll history. Some argue he was the KIng of Rock n Roll. He started out as a country western singer in the mid 50s and toured all over the South with artists like George Jones, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and some guy named Elvis. If you like Jerry Lee Lewis, you really should check out Little Richard, he was like the R&B side of Jerry Lewis in the 50s. Fats Domino (my favorite) is another one of the founding fathers of Rock n Roll that uses the piano religiously as Lewis and Richard.

I saw him in Vegas about 4 or 5 years ago. His voice was obviously not what it was back in the day, given his age, but his fingers still knew their way around that keyboard!
He opened for the Stray Cats! w0000t what a combo! The Cats were doing a one-off at this gig, the annual Viva Las Vegas festival.

One of the original wild men of rock and roll. Partied hard, married his 13 year old cousin (which pretty much canceled his career for a time and relegated him to playing small venues and honky tonks, but he clawed his way back.) Always gave 150% and left his show dripping with sweat. That vocal inflection you love was a signature of his. Check him out on Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On.

Jerry Lee, country singer Mickey Gilley, and evangelist Jimmy Swaggert are all cousins. Their piano playing is very similar due to the same aunt taught them, plus Jerry Lee also picked up piano playing from the mostly black honky-tonks and showed the others how to play it. When driving through Ferriday, LA where he is from, and you'll see "Jerry Lee Lewis St."
