- John Waite was born July 4, 1955 in Lancaster, England. He was already an accomplished musician by the age of 14 by playing harmonica and bass guitar in several bands before he formed the Babys in 1976.
The British band was heavily marketed to the US including a $10,000 budget to make a music video that helped them get signed to Chrysalis records and helped make their first hit, "Isn't It Time" a #13 pop success in December of 1977.
The Babys broke up after their third album with Jonathan Cain joining Journey and Waite being the last one find success on his second solo album, "No Brakes" with the #1 pop single "Missing You".
John was in a reflective mood when it came time to write the lyrics so he wrote about his personal feelings, making word associations and finally working out the entire song. Written quickly, the former art student released the song explaining that it was about the breakup of his relationship and how it helped him to get through that rough time. The adage of the best love songs being written with a broken heart still holds true here.

Yes! 1984 was the year for the love song. Besides the hard rock, country, pop, r&b, jazz and novelty songs, on the radio back then, there was a love song for every taste and extreme. I remember radio stations would play extended versions or a mix of a song. Radio was fun back then. MTV was fun back then. Although the 80’s was a time of fear(A.I.D.S., nuclear war), music, hair and clothing styles, books, television shows and movies was the distraction that was definitely needed.
I am 57 and I hold these memories and moments close to my heart.
Mall life isn’t what it used to be. In fact, anytime I visit a shopping mall I don’t feel that spark of wonder anymore.

This is my favorite song and my introduction to John Waite I've had the privilege of meeting him a few times what a fucking hot looking dude since 2018 he's an American citizen while retaining his British one Missing You got me through my parents divorce and my share of my broken heart 💔 do I miss my Dad at all at the time uh nope but unfortunately he's gone 5 years now I do miss him these days 😭😭💔 😢 my mum Michelle had since moved on with her life she's remarried to my stepfather Michael Fahima they've been married 17 or 18 years now he served in the IDF Israeli Defense Force thanks for your service and my late father former Marine stationed in Korea back in the day during the Korean war
