  • From the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVDs. This looks at how they were restored from original film print negatives and laserdiscs. Shows off the wear and tear that got fixed up.
    This is uploaded for the purpose of education for the viewer on the history of this piece of animation. I do not own this, and if the Warner Brothers wants it taken down then I will take it down.

    It's especially nice to get the full WB orchestra's sound restored. YT has some session recordings with Carl Stalling to listen to that are mind boggling (at least to me.) Sadly, they are audio only but it slays me how Stalling's "click track" method was used. These musicians were playing a score timed to the "click track" to perfectly coincide with the accompanying animation. In other words, the music was recorded separately and, through the use of the "click track," each frame in the cartoon was perfectly matched to the music. These people were geniuses.

      From what I’ve seen, it looks like WB used a Spirit 4K scanner to bring these cartoons into the digital arena.

    I think the entire collection should be restored and made available to the general public. With someone like Jerry Beck supervising this project, there’s no way it could fail.

    When these were made the WB studio heads regarded these as an extra. I wonder what they’d think if they knew these are now regarded as one of America’s greatest cultural artifacts?

    Everything mentioned here in this mini documentary is still true! We want all the cartoons, all the big studios represented and restored. The trouble is that the major companies can no longer afford to do the job themselves, but they refused to allow outside help. I think they should allow this help because there are probably people there that would do this project out of love for the cartoons. thus it is a labor of love. I think them, that’s far, for what they were able to do. We have seen some marvelous restorations, removal of blue ribbon title cards and restoration of the original titles, and all that stuff is very very important to us. The only thing I can add is that it’s too late to stop now! Let’s not shut down physical media, but expanded to include niche audience like ours. and if some of this work has to be farmed out to those smaller video companies who might like to release them more than the companies that owns them, why not? these cartoons don’t need to fall into the public domain in order to see the light of day.

      Having a lot of the cartoons shortened by the “Blue Ribbon” titles feels like blasphemy in my opinion.

    The soundtrack restorations are not always because for various of the pre-1948 shorts they ended up using the turner 1995 dubbed version’s soundtrack, which were already kinda restored anyway

    It was a magic constellation of Carl Stalling, Mel Blanc, and Chuck Jones, that could never happen again.

    As a body of work, the Warner Bros. cartoons are the most satisfying, the characters the most iconic. It's incredible that the Warners themselves didn't appreciate them (Jack Warner once famously said "All I know is we invented Mickey Mouse," but then none of the studio moguls cared much about their cartoon units), but fortunately the fans and the restorers do.

      Those are definitely preserved, but they aren’t widely distributed by Warner brothers. Some of them are already public domain and the others will be entering the public domain in the coming decades. That freedom of copyright restriction will greatly increase their circulation and preservation projects. And ideally further knowledge and education on why the shorts are referred to as the “censored eleven” in the first place and give more historical context about them.

    The post-Schlessinger era MM and LT cartoons are worthy candidates for restoration, but those of the Schlessinger era that *did not* feature the "familiar characters", and those black & white Harmon & Ising cartoons should be *DITCHED!*

    • @darthkurland
      @darthkurland 7 месяцев назад

      That’s a subject for debate. Would having a disclaimer about the content in front of those shorts be acceptable? It just wouldn’t make any sense to pretend that they never existed.

      @@darthkurland A *disclaimer* would be useful for some post-Schlesinger cartoons that had "questionable" content, but the Schlesinger-era and Harmon & Ising early works are of such poor quality, even in their own time, that they are *simply not worth wasting any time over restoring them.*
