How to solve the ferry staffing shortage: pay them more and don't give them wild, insane schedules that require them to basically be available 24 hours a day at almost any ferry location in the entire state. Hire more staff than "necessary" so there's people to work if others get sick or go on vacation. The state needs to facilitate the hell out the ferries, a symbol of our state and one of largest pieces of transportation infrastructure, and quit acting like there's more money for it.

@@ManyDoors777Incorrect. Base wage for the deck department starts at $23 and after 6 months goes up to $27.

@@BoatTrashBandit Big box stores are paying towards $20 already to start and around the same amounts you mentioned for team leads who have far less responsibilities. Sure, they're under pressure to hit sales, but lives aren't at stake. Considering the responsibilities, the job should pay much more, such as $35-$40. Seems like a lot, but it's not these days given the cost of living.

All the employees that Jay Inslee fired did not seem to have a problem and they were able to meet their schedules. They knew their job and they did it well now we just have a bunch of monkeys literally😮

I moved to Ohio in 2019, after being in the greater Seattle/Puget Sound region for 40 years. A good chunk of that was in Bremerton. Commuting via ferry got boring after about a week, but I'd give anything to be on the upper deck of the Walla Walla right now, seeing the gorgeous scenery. Heavy sigh.

What's missing from this report about becoming a ferry Captain? Where to go to actually find out information on how to become one. Sigh.

Check out these schools..Piney Point seamans academy, school and Calhoun University of nautical technologu.East coast.I think they are still open .My dad worked as a first class chief electrical engineer diesel license too and on his time between intl jobs, worked for WA and AKferries. He went to the 2nd one in the early 70s.he made 28.00 an hour before OT way back then when labor unions and workers were paid and treated well.

No extremely risky mandated medical procedures would be key to keeping any employees long term.Even cocaine doesnt give people blood clots.

The hiring process is ridiculous, and the pay is barely anything in todays inflated economy. If you want to inspire and get more workers, inspire them with great pay and benefits. Otherwise you get what ya pay for!

No politics? The events of 2020 and the various mandates says otherwise. Many workers quit. Good luck with hiring, since the pay is sub-par and job overly demanding.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Washington State Ferries are so laughable and pitiful. They canceled an entire run today and still were over 30 minutes behind schedule. Couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

In the old days before WSDOT contracted them out to private companies to run them, they were right tight and outtasight. And they lost many experienced workers to the mandates, then hired people who were totally clueless and young and maybe a little dumb,too.Sad.
