My wife and I were in Dhaka last month. The life on the river was very interesting to see. The river right at Dhaka is considered dead as there wasn't any fish or plant life except for some plants that had washed down from upstream.

For individuals, yes. In other words, the average person would have been better off. They would have been able to accomplish much more if they let The British administration rule for at least a few decades and slowly acclimate themselves. Like Hong Kong and Botswana. There would have been a thriving middle class and far far far less corruption.

Colonizers brought in advanced equipment, medicine, and ideas that improved their standard of living. When the colonizers left so did the western investment and they went straight back to their old ways. It's like time stopped for them. All they need is projects to clean up the river (stop polluting points and establish STPs) and build two to three suspension bridges at the needed locations (these bridges should have lanes for vehicle traffic and sidewalks on both sides for pedestrians as well). Both India and China have the expertise to complete these projects. Bangladesh can seek their assistance. After these bridges are built, those polluting boats can be sent to scrapyard.

This reminds me of one of those disaster documentaries. They weren't sure how many passengers were on board, but it was four to five times the legal limit. Sure we had totes of gasoline on board, but the caps were on them. We kept the food vendors with their propane bottles away from them. Who is the captain? We're not sure, he likely isn't using his real name. We think he is wanted somewhere. How do you get insurance? We can't. What happens if the ship sinks? Apparently, it isn't completely clear who owns the ship.

To be honest when I clicked on the video, I expected a much worse scenario. As someone who hardly ever travel let alone be on a ship, the ferry looks pretty clean and adequately comfortable. I remember watching a documentary about a particular train route in an African country (I forgot which country) and boy, it looked like a train ride from hell. When there was no more room inside the carriages, people piled themselves up on the roof of the train. So yeah, this ferry is definitely not the worst way to travel.
Problem with countries like that is most people don't earn enough to pay income tax so the government doesn't have a lot of money to put into the economy. It has a population of 168 million people and a national budget of only 30 billion dollars so it's easy to see that It's the black market economy that keeps the country afloat. I admire that they can survive on the little they have.
